Excellent tutorial. To the point, brief and concise, on target. He presents the stuff clearly, in order and addresses normal unavoidable questions that will come up to any normal person trying to use the product. Great instructor, definitely thumbs up and subscribe.
I've also been doing upholstery for over 40 years, we found out a LONG time ago not to use spray can adhesive for headliners. Weldwood is good stuff, there used to be a green colored contact cement that was even better but they changed the formulation and it was no good, don't think that company is around anymore. And I have also used cheap quart spray guns, and you never really have to clean them out UNLESS you leave the glue in and the weather is hot and it dries out inside the gun.
Most people don't know about these old school ways because in a throw away society it's all about move the new version of product in the most wasteful way so more can be sold. I've known that there were better adhesives for some time but didn't know where to get them or what they were, so thank you for the information.

Awesome video, great info. I had my car vandalized with spray paint and paint from a can. I used mineral spirits and removed 99% of it. I was shocked at how good it worked with ZERO damage to my car. Even the rubber trim that was sun beaten and faded…took nearly all of that off. That was the only place with a hint of the vandals work. I imagine the vandals were shocked because by the time the sun came up, my car was sparkly clean. Not only did i remove all the vandal’s work, but I cleaned and washed/waxed the vehicle right after. Mineral Spirits are no joke, saved me for sure.

I started with the 3 and it just makes a gum-pucky mess of everything! I have however been affraid of spray guns getting clogged etc. I feel much better now about giving it a go, I am doing a 56 Chev Bel Air seat in Suede right now and I knew 3 would be a failure but wasnt sure which direction to go, thank you for sharing your years of experience :D I appreciate you for doing this video!

Well you answered what I had been wondering which is do you have to clean your gun after every use or every day. That weld wood contact adhesive aint no joke. I think thats what they put the space shuttle together with! Good video as always, keep them coming please.
Yep! I did auto upholstery installs only(no sewing, someone else made the seat cover kits)for about 4-5 years for a company that replaced the cheap interiors in mini trucks like Datsun, Dodge d50's and some Toyota's back in the late '70's. Never used a rattle can of adhesive, and the back area of a Datsun King Cab had to be carpeted up to the door panel line that was to be glued in, oh yeah the door panels. I think they hired me because all I did was vinyl tops back then. A place in Portland OR called Perfect-Fit McDonald Co. sold 5 gallons of glue for about 45 bucks. Different brands came and went, I recall green and even a red color glue but mostly a beige color glue. I used a Graco 2.5 gallon pressure pot and never cleaned anything but the Binks gun nozzle. Later when I opened a auto body and paint shop I had a headliner in a '82 Zed 28 Camaro to replace and used a 3M rattle can but it all came loose and I had to buy a cheap gun and a qt can of general purpose contact cement to fix the headliner.
I have to thank you! I wasn’t looking for that information but now I know why gluing a failing headliner was never a permanent repair. I thought it might be the foam on the back of the fabric that was deteriorating. Now I know! Thanks!
It IS the foam backing that deteriorates. The glue is nearly always still on the headliner panel, that the material is glued onto. It's important to prep the surface and use adequate amount of glue to make a positive bond. Use too little and the foambacked fabric will be reaching down and letting you know, if you didn't do it right.😁☕

I do agree with you as I have had problems with the spray can adhesive. You mentioned that it does not hold good. That is a fact even the hot sun will loosen it.. I,m not a trimmer but I enjoy your videos
You got it. The 3m spray works if you can keep things cool. Heat makes it wimp out, like the heat found in cars. I use to use it when I recovered my pool tables, and it would stay hard and strong over years and then have to rip the old felt off the slate. In a vehicle it was crap and with heat it would turn loose. Barge is another excellent contact adhesive, and I used it to glue new rubber pool bumpers to the wood that mounted the bumpers to the sides of the table after reclothing them as well.
Your video is much appreciated. I am in the process of building a urethane foam body for a 3-wheel car and need to consider edge bonding the panels together before glassing. Incidentally, I have used 3-M adhesive to replace a 15 year old cloth headliner in one of my vehicles. 12 years later it was still firmly in place. I thank you for your advice.

I used the the spray can from 3M for my convertible top and it held pretty good. It was recommended to me by a professional installer who was nice enough to give me a few tips and encouraged me to do the job myself which I did.This was before You Tube
I made a console for my 64 Galaxie and used the 3 men spray and the vinyl fell off in about 3 months. I own Crystal Bear Leather works and use wood weld on leather its always done a great job for me

3M in the black and Green can which you cant buy in stores works, but any of the 3M you can buy in stores is junk. 3M 90 and 94 it's double the price for a reason. But yeah I use Dap from the can and use spray gun they also now sell it in the spray can which I use for small quick jobs.

No I'm not telling you to use it but the stuff most people buy is for arts and crafts in the red and black bottle. I got the black and green stuff through some guys at work for small jobs, 4 5 years later still strong. I use dap when I'm doing a big job, it's far to expensive to use anyways spay can cost as much as gallon of dap.
Yeah, still haven't told you to use it not sure why you think I'm telling you to. I'm jusy saying they have different grades, and that why thier strong stuff isn't sold in stores just as dap is also not sold in stores and illegal in 7 states I think.

Wow, those 5 gallon cans are expensive. But, I can see that it is much cheaper than buying it by the gallon. And it is better to use the best product the first time. I have never done upholstery work, but it sure is enjoyable watching you make everything look like new again. Thanks !

Hello Jay, if your just doing a repair, use a brush as air pressure will pull the rest of your headliner down. By all means, use the spray gun if your replacing all the material on your headliner. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the suggestion! I've been using the stuff in the spray can, but I only use it for hobby level projects. Thankfully I've never had a problem with it failing. But it's expensive in spray cans, and I'm happy to learn that its cheaper and just as easy to use from bulk containers. I'll dedicate an old spray gun and give it a try!
I'm 100% in agreement! I've tried many different brands of can spray adhesive and they all eventually fail. My last and final project I tried with 3M spray was on speaker cabinets veneered with Mahogany. within a day the veneer started lifting, it was a total disaster, and I wasted expensive veneer. Weldwood contact is the best, period. Once bonded, it strays stuck forever.

The ONLY reason why the 'children' recommend the 3M Super 77 is because it's as close to instant gratification as they can get. Doing it right the first time is not the point. Doing it as fast and easy as possible is all that matters to 'them'. The real purpose of the 3M Super 77 is as you mentioned, NOT EVER DRYING or really being permanent. It's great for the vapour barrier film one attaches to the door metal between the door and the door card to keep the water coming down from the window off the door card.
OSAUT, I think you'll agree, there is no universal adhesive, the application determines what adhesive to use, some adhesives may have several applications. There is ALWAYS a cost to convenience.

I think you're all using the wrong spray adhesive. There are two different 3m spray adhesives that work extremely well. The strongest of the two is the Headliner Adhesive. It is very strong, and has an odor similar to the weldwood. The other is the General Trim Adhesive. It works well on just about anything. It is good for gluing foam to foam, material to foam, and material to just about anything else. I have used it for over 30 years with excellent results. I recently had the chance to check out a headliner that I installed in a C-10 truck in 2007, and it is holding up just great, with no loose edges, and no drooping anywhere. It was put together with the General Purpose Adhesive with no problems at all. The 77 adhesive is designed as a hobby adhesive, and sprays out like a can of paint, whereas the Headliner Adhesive and General Purpose Adhesive sprays out in a lace, or spiderweb style spray, with an adjustable spray nozzle. You should really give these products a try before you write off all spray adhesives, you may find something you like.

@@oldschoolautoupholstery : Trust me, it gets plenty hot here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast also. I have not experienced any failures with the General Purpose Adhesive I referenced. Spray both surfaces, allow some dry time, and place the two together. I think you will find that the bond will be instantaneous and extremely strong. You should try a sample and see for yourself. I have found the lowest price for the adhesive is at Walmart as opposed to autoparts stores.

I have been disappointed nearly anytime I use 77 unless it is a room temperature application. It is touted to work with trim pieces and that is where I find it to be very worthless and they always start peeling no matter the prep! I've used contact-adhesive out of the can and it is terrific in most all applications... Thanks for pointing this out to new-players!
Just some FYI reference the "spray-gun" shown in this video, i.e., a Chinesium: low grade, cheap spray gun. Is a nock-off of the Bink's model "7," syphon spray gun. Another spray-gun used in the Autobody trade was a "DeVilbiss" spray-gun. Who's design was used for any year's in the Autobody world for many year's before the Japanese spray guns (Sharpe's) started to enter the market approx. early 1980's, if I'm not mistaken. If I'm wrong, oh well I might be a little off on the date. As a old and retired Autobody guy, that's all I ever seen in upholstery shop's, were spray gun setup's. Some of the shops used two quarts spray-pot's or even three gallon spray-pot's. (you get to where your putting on two or three vinyl tops a week, this is what your gonna need.) But never as we called them "Spray-Bomb's," i.e., spray-cans from some bull-shite company that sounds like 3-men. As someone who has personally removed a lot of automotive vinyl tops, to save some money so the upholstery shop didn't have to, the one thing I always notice about factory vinyl tops, was the uniform coverage, and appearance of the glue, i.e. it was always sprayed on via a spray-gun.
Hello Stanwood, You are 100% correct in your recollections! I used them all through the years. Glue pots, then DeVelbiss, then Sharpes. Then I discovered the Harbor Freight. Now I buy a $27 HF spray gun every two or so years. Hard to argue that one.... I have done hundreds of vinyl tops, mostly in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Thanks for bringing back some memories! I tried this on a GM headliner years ago. HUGE FAIL !!!!!!. I thought it was just me not knowing what i was doing. Had a headache the first few weeks after riding in that car. Glad years later to see it was the product.

Thanks. Until now 3-M brand adhesive spray has the best comparison tests. I have a headliner that is beginning to detach at the windshield. Weldwood Landou may be more reliable but I don’t need a 5gl drum of solvent nor do I have a spray gun😅. I do see that Amazon carries a 14oz spray can of the stuff so I will be giving this a try after all. Thanks for posting the video. 👍
My big problem isn't the adhesive, but the laminated foam/cloth of head liners etc. The part that I or the factory glues on stays, but the laminate or what ever you want to call it splits in the middle. Doesn't matter how well glued it is!!
You are absolutely right. The 3M adhesive is for paper; however, the Gorilla works way better. Unfortunately you can't get the good stuff in CA any more.
The driver's side foam has collapsed in my '88 Chevy pickup (bench seat). The cloth upholstery and passenger side foam are perfect. Would you do an episode on how to repair collapsed foam? Thanks.

you do not piss me off :D I make , among other stuff, cat-trees/houses etc. I started out with spray adhesive, because well.. y'know.. it got advised everywhere and it is very convenient to use. However it has many problems, like you mention, like reliability and coming loose in time. Now I use industrial carpet glue (this snotty stuff that smells of petrol) but it smells real bad and its real messy) I will try this spray-gun with contact adhesive for the next batch.
Another observation about 3 emm.. Recently they reduced the size of the can from 16 ounces to 13.6 (maybe .7) oz and increased the price at the same time. I use it for making stencils.. and true, it eventually peels.
Thanks for the information. Good stuff, unfortunately for a small diy where it may be a small door panel or piece of carpet ungluing the spray can worked fine. I don't have a lot of space or ancompressor as I'm sure many dont so the can is probably what you have access to. I used both the orange can and the 3m, I found the spray pattern was better on the 3m. It also felt a bit better than the orange can, just a tiny bit though. Both seem to work for small parts where I used them.
Hello My, You are welcome. Being that I have paying customers and a really good reputation, I would never use any glue from a spray can. The least a person can do is buy a quart of contact adhesive and apply with a brush. The spray can stuff will fail over time where the contact adhesive will not. Please keep liking and watching!
If I had regular foam without the scrim material, could I just glue some cotton or polyester material to the back side of the foam so the bottom thread wouldn't pull through the foam? Or is that even necessary? Could I just sew it without scrim fabric? The foam I would be using is 1/4" to 1" thick. Thanks.
Hello Big, You could back your old foam if you want, but it is 2023. You can buy backed foam. Unbacked foam friction will drag on the sewing machine very badly. Just get the right stuff, and you will be ok. Please keep liking and watching!

Years ago my daughter and her girlfriend were driving around in this VW bug with the headliner on their heads!! So I pulled one side open to get my arm in there, sprayed it with some spray contact cement wasn’t three m. Worked still to this day three years!! Maybe a fluk ?
Its simple. Its what goes in the can for preasure and to atomize content thin. Chemical make up / reactions. Where in the sprayer its done by ventury. But its understanding. Prep. Usage. Per an application (what your doing it for. Both)

I'm learning from my mistakes and used spray glue once at my c10 pickup headliner I put vinyl fabric and after three months started peeling I was very frustrated because I worked all day to do that and re do it again but I used contact glue this time and very different. Spray glue sucks 😆😆
@@Hobojay Hello Javier, The reason your headliner is failing is because of the foam that separates from the fabric. Any air pressure from a glue gun will blow apart whats left of your headliner. I think it is just time for a new headliner. At least that is what I would do. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for your knowledgable input. I've always trusted the contact adhesive too but was afraid to spray it. After watching this video I think I'll give spraying a try. What size tip do you recommend ? Do you use an HVLP style or Old School gun? What pressure do you recommend at the gun? Thx in advance, KW.

I used contact cement or adhesive to glue on under hood foam pads. Nothing else worked. But make sure you pre fit and mark out things because once it contacts both surfaces, it sticks permanently. I use the 3m stuff for minor stuff that I may want or need to move a bit. But nothing that will be in the realm of harsh environments.
In the early 70's large upholstery shop we're installing a vinyl top they just sewed together and was fitting. With a can on both sides, they brushed the WeldWood contact cement "Landau Top" in the same can with the top pulled 1/2 back. I was quietly watching and someone ask if they could help. No, I am 3 minutes from picking up a vehicle going back to the dealer. I ask "it says sprayable" on the can but you brush it? One of the 4 said this is faster on tops and the other guy started laughing. He said 4 times faster as the started trimming, he goes on "We only have one gun anyhow!" They stretched it tight and used a 2-3" rubber roller like a counter top. Looked good. He stopped as the go-fast part was over and told me that's all the ever use for big jobs.
Hello Dean, Using a brush is another way but the glue will dry too fast on the brush when using it on such a large area. A spray gun will run circles around a brush. I have done hundreds of vinyl tops in my day. Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery I would have to agree, yet I was not an upholstery tech, just the dealer tech diagnose & repair. I never had seen a top installed and totally confused by guys much older than me, in the shade, in front of the building and using a contact cement out of a can that said "Spray" on it. The car wasn't old and don't know what was wrong with the old top. Maybe they didn't want to drip on it! As the oldest on a family farm, you learn quick not to question your elders, but all four guys had a brush, two for car and two for the top. Maybe they only had one spray gun, don't know. Spraying makes more sense, but I am just reporting what I saw! Stay safe of the Memorial Day weekend.
I agree with you, the 3men fails. The Weldwood is the right stuff. My only problem , can’t find it at the big box store anymore, they only carry the “green no odor “ and it is useless.
QUESTION: Can I apply WELDWOOD to cushion foam with a brush? I want to use cushion foam for draft models of some sculptures. I am not a professional. I don't see investing in a spray gun anytime soon. I was all set to use the 3M 77 spray can until I came across your convincing TH-cam video.

Hello Wilson, A syphon spray gun is what's worked for me for 43 years. Easy to set on top of a table while working and not top heavy like a gravity fed gun. Easier on the wrist. I never worried about tip size. Remember it's not rocket science. Please keep liking and watching!
I know Super 77 is not good for that application by reading the spec sheet. Figured that out years ago. It's a good product when used for the correct application but I don't use it for automotive projects, especially upholstery and headliners.
Thanks for the video! Weldwood has a spray aerosol can as well, have you tried this? Might be the answer for people who have small projects. Another question, when using mineral spirits to remove old adhesive, will remaining mineral spirits film cause adhesian issues? What can be used to remove any remaining film? Also, this stuff has a VERY STRONG ODOR, use in a very well ventilated area. I bought a very small can at home big box store. I found that it's pretty potent and will destroy cheap (practice) vinyl. HELLO 134ziNG4, You are so welcome! I didn't know about the aerosol can. After the mineral spirits have dried, I never think about any film. You can apply it over dried mineral spirits, but I would not re-apply it over wet mineral spirits. I have never had any problem doing it this way. Thanks for the awesome comment! So, for the one small repair (actually a modification) I have to do, I will buy a compressor, spray gun, and a 5 gallon can of adhesive? Now, honestly I have the compressor, and the spray gun, as well as a good assortment of professional grade tools. But I won't be going into the upholstery business. So, what non-commercial, non-industrial, easily available in small amounts adhesive should I use? The bond is temporary and will be ultimately held with rivets. One small part of a "high-end" leather upholstered Harley seat is all I need to do. So, what should I use? I already know what I am using, but I ran into your video and figured I would ask. I went and watched some of your other videos. Great stuff. Good work. Oh, my modification? I am cutting the nose off the pan of a seat made for an old Electra Glide to shorten it for use on a Street Glide. Just pulling back a few inches of the nose leather and shortening the pan and foam, then putting the leather back.

I've also been doing upholstery for over 40 years, we found out a LONG time ago not to use spray can adhesive for headliners. Weldwood is good stuff, there used to be a green colored contact cement that was even better but they changed the formulation and it was no good, don't think that company is around anymore. And I have also used cheap quart spray guns, and you never really have to clean them out UNLESS you leave the glue in and the weather is hot and it dries out inside the gun.

Awesome video, great info.
I had my car vandalized with spray paint and paint from a can. I used mineral spirits and removed 99% of it. I was shocked at how good it worked with ZERO damage to my car. Even the rubber trim that was sun beaten and faded…took nearly all of that off. That was the only place with a hint of the vandals work. I imagine the vandals were shocked because by the time the sun came up, my car was sparkly clean. Not only did i remove all the vandal’s work, but I cleaned and washed/waxed the vehicle right after. Mineral Spirits are no joke, saved me for sure.

I started with the 3 and it just makes a gum-pucky mess of everything! I have however been affraid of spray guns getting clogged etc. I feel much better now about giving it a go, I am doing a 56 Chev Bel Air seat in Suede right now and I knew 3 would be a failure but wasnt sure which direction to go, thank you for sharing your years of experience :D I appreciate you for doing this video!

Yep! I did auto upholstery installs only(no sewing, someone else made the seat cover kits)for about 4-5 years for a company that replaced the cheap interiors in mini trucks like Datsun, Dodge d50's and some Toyota's back in the late '70's. Never used a rattle can of adhesive, and the back area of a Datsun King Cab had to be carpeted up to the door panel line that was to be glued in, oh yeah the door panels. I think they hired me because all I did was vinyl tops back then. A place in Portland OR called Perfect-Fit McDonald Co. sold 5 gallons of glue for about 45 bucks. Different brands came and went, I recall green and even a red color glue but mostly a beige color glue. I used a Graco 2.5 gallon pressure pot and never cleaned anything but the Binks gun nozzle. Later when I opened a auto body and paint shop I had a headliner in a '82 Zed 28 Camaro to replace and used a 3M rattle can but it all came loose and I had to buy a cheap gun and a qt can of general purpose contact cement to fix the headliner.

I have to thank you! I wasn’t looking for that information but now I know why gluing a failing headliner was never a permanent repair. I thought it might be the foam on the back of the fabric that was deteriorating. Now I know! Thanks!

It IS the foam backing that deteriorates. The glue is nearly always still on the headliner panel, that the material is glued onto.
It's important to prep the surface and use adequate amount of glue to make a positive bond.
Use too little and the foambacked fabric will be reaching down and letting you know, if you didn't do it right.😁☕

You got it. The 3m spray works if you can keep things cool. Heat makes it wimp out, like the heat found in cars. I use to use it when I recovered my pool tables, and it would stay hard and strong over years and then have to rip the old felt off the slate. In a vehicle it was crap and with heat it would turn loose. Barge is another excellent contact adhesive, and I used it to glue new rubber pool bumpers to the wood that mounted the bumpers to the sides of the table after reclothing them as well.

Your video is much appreciated. I am in the process of building a urethane foam body for a 3-wheel car and need to consider edge bonding the panels together before glassing. Incidentally, I have used 3-M adhesive to replace a 15 year old cloth headliner in one of my vehicles. 12 years later it was still firmly in place. I thank you for your advice.

I used the the spray can from 3M for my convertible top and it held pretty good. It was recommended to me by a professional installer who was nice enough to give me a few tips and encouraged me to do the job myself which I did.This was before You Tube

I made a console for my 64 Galaxie and used the 3 men spray and the vinyl fell off in about 3 months. I own Crystal Bear Leather works and use wood weld on leather its always done a great job for me

3M in the black and Green can which you cant buy in stores works, but any of the 3M you can buy in stores is junk. 3M 90 and 94 it's double the price for a reason. But yeah I use Dap from the can and use spray gun they also now sell it in the spray can which I use for small quick jobs.

No I'm not telling you to use it but the stuff most people buy is for arts and crafts in the red and black bottle. I got the black and green stuff through some guys at work for small jobs, 4 5 years later still strong. I use dap when I'm doing a big job, it's far to expensive to use anyways spay can cost as much as gallon of dap.

Thanks for the suggestion! I've been using the stuff in the spray can, but I only use it for hobby level projects. Thankfully I've never had a problem with it failing. But it's expensive in spray cans, and I'm happy to learn that its cheaper and just as easy to use from bulk containers. I'll dedicate an old spray gun and give it a try!

I'm 100% in agreement! I've tried many different brands of can spray adhesive and they all eventually fail. My last and final project I tried with 3M spray was on speaker cabinets veneered with Mahogany. within a day the veneer started lifting, it was a total disaster, and I wasted expensive veneer. Weldwood contact is the best, period. Once bonded, it strays stuck forever.

Yes I use the 3 men 90, and it works okay but as you said it is not reliable and can fail in the hot humid weather.

The ONLY reason why the 'children' recommend the 3M Super 77 is because it's as close to instant gratification as they can get. Doing it right the first time is not the point. Doing it as fast and easy as possible is all that matters to 'them'.
The real purpose of the 3M Super 77 is as you mentioned, NOT EVER DRYING or really being permanent. It's great for the vapour barrier film one attaches to the door metal between the door and the door card to keep the water coming down from the window off the door card.

OSAUT, I think you'll agree, there is no universal adhesive, the application determines what adhesive to use, some adhesives may have several applications. There is ALWAYS a cost to convenience.

I think you're all using the wrong spray adhesive. There are two different 3m spray adhesives that work extremely well. The strongest of the two is the Headliner Adhesive. It is very strong, and has an odor similar to the weldwood. The other is the General Trim Adhesive. It works well on just about anything. It is good for gluing foam to foam, material to foam, and material to just about anything else. I have used it for over 30 years with excellent results. I recently had the chance to check out a headliner that I installed in a C-10 truck in 2007, and it is holding up just great, with no loose edges, and no drooping anywhere. It was put together with the General Purpose Adhesive with no problems at all. The 77 adhesive is designed as a hobby adhesive, and sprays out like a can of paint, whereas the Headliner Adhesive and General Purpose Adhesive sprays out in a lace, or spiderweb style spray, with an adjustable spray nozzle. You should really give these products a try before you write off all spray adhesives, you may find something you like.

@@oldschoolautoupholstery : Trust me, it gets plenty hot here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast also. I have not experienced any failures with the General Purpose Adhesive I referenced. Spray both surfaces, allow some dry time, and place the two together. I think you will find that the bond will be instantaneous and extremely strong. You should try a sample and see for yourself. I have found the lowest price for the adhesive is at Walmart as opposed to autoparts stores.

I have been disappointed nearly anytime I use 77 unless it is a room temperature application.
It is touted to work with trim pieces and that is where I find it to be very worthless and they always start peeling no matter the prep!
I've used contact-adhesive out of the can and it is terrific in most all applications...

Just some FYI reference the "spray-gun" shown in this video, i.e., a Chinesium: low grade, cheap spray gun. Is a nock-off of the Bink's model "7," syphon spray gun. Another spray-gun used in the Autobody trade was a "DeVilbiss" spray-gun. Who's design was used for any year's in the Autobody world for many year's before the Japanese spray guns (Sharpe's) started to enter the market approx. early 1980's, if I'm not mistaken. If I'm wrong, oh well I might be a little off on the date. As a old and retired Autobody guy, that's all I ever seen in upholstery shop's, were spray gun setup's. Some of the shops used two quarts spray-pot's or even three gallon spray-pot's. (you get to where your putting on two or three vinyl tops a week, this is what your gonna need.) But never as we called them "Spray-Bomb's," i.e., spray-cans from some bull-shite company that sounds like 3-men. As someone who has personally removed a lot of automotive vinyl tops, to save some money so the upholstery shop didn't have to, the one thing I always notice about factory vinyl tops, was the uniform coverage, and appearance of the glue, i.e. it was always sprayed on via a spray-gun.
Hello Stanwood, You are 100% correct in your recollections! I used them all through the years. Glue pots, then DeVelbiss, then Sharpes. Then I discovered the Harbor Freight. Now I buy a $27 HF spray gun every two or so years. Hard to argue that one.... I have done hundreds of vinyl tops, mostly in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Thanks for bringing back some memories! Thanks. Until now 3-M brand adhesive spray has the best comparison tests. I have a headliner that is beginning to detach at the windshield. Weldwood Landou may be more reliable but I don’t need a 5gl drum of solvent nor do I have a spray gun😅. I do see that Amazon carries a 14oz spray can of the stuff so I will be giving this a try after all. Thanks for posting the video. 👍

My big problem isn't the adhesive, but the laminated foam/cloth of head liners etc. The part that I or the factory glues on stays, but the laminate or what ever you want to call it splits in the middle. Doesn't matter how well glued it is!!

I make , among other stuff, cat-trees/houses etc. I started out with spray adhesive, because well.. y'know.. it got advised everywhere and it is very convenient to use.
However it has many problems, like you mention, like reliability and coming loose in time.
Now I use industrial carpet glue (this snotty stuff that smells of petrol) but it smells real bad and its real messy)
I will try this spray-gun with contact adhesive for the next batch.

Another observation about 3 emm.. Recently they reduced the size of the can from 16 ounces to 13.6 (maybe .7) oz and increased the price at the same time.
I use it for making stencils.. and true, it eventually peels.

Thanks for the information. Good stuff, unfortunately for a small diy where it may be a small door panel or piece of carpet ungluing the spray can worked fine. I don't have a lot of space or ancompressor as I'm sure many dont so the can is probably what you have access to. I used both the orange can and the 3m, I found the spray pattern was better on the 3m. It also felt a bit better than the orange can, just a tiny bit though. Both seem to work for small parts where I used them.

The least a person can do is buy a quart of contact adhesive and apply with a brush. The spray can stuff will fail over time where the contact adhesive will not. Please keep liking and watching!

If I had regular foam without the scrim material, could I just glue some cotton or polyester material to the back side of the foam so the bottom thread wouldn't pull through the foam? Or is that even necessary? Could I just sew it without scrim fabric? The foam I would be using is 1/4" to 1" thick. Thanks.
Hello Big, You could back your old foam if you want, but it is 2023. You can buy backed foam. Unbacked foam friction will drag on the sewing machine very badly. Just get the right stuff, and you will be ok. Please keep liking and watching!

Years ago my daughter and her girlfriend were driving around in this VW bug with the headliner on their heads!! So I pulled one side open to get my arm in there, sprayed it with some spray contact cement wasn’t three m. Worked still to this day three years!! Maybe a fluk ?

I'm learning from my mistakes and used spray glue once at my c10 pickup headliner I put vinyl fabric and after three months started peeling I was very frustrated because I worked all day to do that and re do it again but I used contact glue this time and very different.

I used contact cement or adhesive to glue on under hood foam pads. Nothing else worked. But make sure you pre fit and mark out things because once it contacts both surfaces, it sticks permanently. I use the 3m stuff for minor stuff that I may want or need to move a bit. But nothing that will be in the realm of harsh environments.

In the early 70's large upholstery shop we're installing a vinyl top they just sewed together and was fitting. With a can on both sides, they brushed the WeldWood contact cement "Landau Top" in the same can with the top pulled 1/2 back. I was quietly watching and someone ask if they could help. No, I am 3 minutes from picking up a vehicle going back to the dealer. I ask "it says sprayable" on the can but you brush it? One of the 4 said this is faster on tops and the other guy started laughing. He said 4 times faster as the started trimming, he goes on "We only have one gun anyhow!" They stretched it tight and used a 2-3" rubber roller like a counter top. Looked good. He stopped as the go-fast part was over and told me that's all the ever use for big jobs.

I never had seen a top installed and totally confused by guys much older than me, in the shade, in front of the building and using a contact cement out of a can that said "Spray" on it. The car wasn't old and don't know what was wrong with the old top. Maybe they didn't want to drip on it! As the oldest on a family farm, you learn quick not to question your elders, but all four guys had a brush, two for car and two for the top. Maybe they only had one spray gun, don't know. Spraying makes more sense, but I am just reporting what I saw! Stay safe of the Memorial Day weekend.

Hello Wilson, A syphon spray gun is what's worked for me for 43 years. Easy to set on top of a table while working and not top heavy like a gravity fed gun. Easier on the wrist. I never worried about tip size. Remember it's not rocket science. Please keep liking and watching!
I know Super 77 is not good for that application by reading the spec sheet. Figured that out years ago. It's a good product when used for the correct application but I don't use it for automotive projects, especially upholstery and headliners.

Thanks for the video! Weldwood has a spray aerosol can as well, have you tried this? Might be the answer for people who have small projects. Another question, when using mineral spirits to remove old adhesive, will remaining mineral spirits film cause adhesian issues? What can be used to remove any remaining film? Also, this stuff has a VERY STRONG ODOR, use in a very well ventilated area. I bought a very small can at home big box store. I found that it's pretty potent and will destroy cheap (practice) vinyl. So, for the one small repair (actually a modification) I have to do, I will buy a compressor, spray gun, and a 5 gallon can of adhesive? Now, honestly I have the compressor, and the spray gun, as well as a good assortment of professional grade tools. But I won't be going into the upholstery business. So, what non-commercial, non-industrial, easily available in small amounts adhesive should I use? The bond is temporary and will be ultimately held with rivets. One small part of a "high-end" leather upholstered Harley seat is all I need to do. So, what should I use? I already know what I am using, but I ran into your video and figured I would ask. I went and watched some of your other videos. Great stuff. Good work. Oh, my modification? I am cutting the nose off the pan of a seat made for an old Electra Glide to shorten it for use on a Street Glide. Just pulling back a few inches of the nose leather and shortening the pan and foam, then putting the leather back.
