      I removed all of the old headliner material, and what's left is a very thin (beds sheet) fiberglass backing. It's very flimsy, and looks like applying a new headliner is going to be impossible... Any advice? Thanks

    I’m watching all your videos now in 2024, after my Dad’s passing in 2019. He was an upholsterer since 15 years old till his passing at age 66! He was truly a very cool guy his whole life, & an awesome tradesman. I never was able to learn the trade due to us living in different states, but he did gift me a cool old PFAFF about a year before he left us, & didn’t get too far along on my training. Now I’m going to really give it a shot to learn it, & this reminds me so much of Dad. Thanks for your instructional videos sir. God bless.

But for those who might want to get into this line of work and don't have 40+ years experience, I would hope there's a tool or drill attachment that can help quicken the process. That looks great Rudy! I’ve done hundreds of headliners over the last 31 years. And I’ve done it the same way you showed. Except I use a wheel wire brush on my drill to remove the old foam. Then I use a wire brush to clean it off smooth clean. It is messy. I’ve used the same glue and spray gun. I installed it back immediately in the vehicle after I’m done . To replace a headliner on a Jetta with Sun roof is very tedious. Thanks for the video and keep posting more. I enjoy watching!! Ed

    14:21 -- the most golden advice when it comes to headliners. I made the mistake of using "headliner adhesive" once. So far it's working good enough to give me little extra time , a repair shop is not close in this area . believe I could do it now , just a little intimidating getting the thing out but actually its not that big & with a couple of saw horses believe I can handle it with right adhesive

Do I need to remove all of it before I install the new one?. I got most of it off. Should I use goo gone to remove the rest? If I use the goo gone do I need to remove that before using the adhesive. Thank you for such a good video. Much appreciated. Since I am in Denmark, and I want to do it myself on my old Land Rover, I've taken the headliner out of the car, and taken off the old material, plus the foam. The precious owner (I recently bought the car) used spray glue which of course did nothing good, and then staples. I could take off the foam and the staples with no problem, but the styropor (the firm plate) is super sticky. It's a bit like the spray glue kind of semi melted the top of the styropor surface a little bit, if that makes sense.
    Should I clean this stickyness off, before I spray new glue on with my spraygun, or not?
    And if I should remove the stickyness, what to use, so I avoid dissolving the styropor?
    Really could use an advice for this from a professional like you.
    Much appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Redfox.

    Not worried about price but how do I get a custom fabric to work right with foam or can you give advice on foam

    • @oldschoolautoupholstery
      @oldschoolautoupholstery  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello Kenny, The easiest fabric would be headliner fabric which has the stretch and foam added already. You could use 1/8" - 1/4" foam. Make sure the fabric that you are using is not to thin as the glue will soak through. Be sure the fabric has a very good stretch. Please keep liking and watching!

    • @oldschoolautoupholstery
      @oldschoolautoupholstery  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello Klotus, Sure this can be done on other parts. But, I would not use headliner material as it will not last long. Headliner fabrics can sit unharmed in cars for many years because they are almost never touched. Materials like vinyl's or seat fabrics are made for high wear areas. Please keep liking and watching!

    I'm trying my luck with black vinyl for headliner. I'm using a drill with hard bristles (might be quicker). I've got a 2000 bmw 323i and a 1994 sierra k1500 that need this job done.

      I have a1959 apache In pieces no electrical, brake pedals, booster, master cylinder, brake lines, upholstery , instrument cluster, seat belts etc. It's sitting on a v6 chevy Sonoma truck frame from mid to early 2000's. It has suspension bags on all four corners. A 350 engine with transmission attached. It's got wheels and tires, new brakes on all four corners. Anyway I thought it was a deal I paid $6000 for it last year on my birthday. It's going to be a project for my retirement in a decade or so. I can do everything on it except upholstery. I purchased a paff straight stitch to do upholstery in 2016 but haven't used it yet to do any real work. It is industrial grade and sews through many layers of vinyl but the stitch length is a tad small. 4.5mm if I remember right. I need like a 5.5 or a 6mm stitch. I purchased a roller foot and a dog set with plate for piping. I will go through your videos to learn from a master. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
