Hello Danny, Thank you so much for saying so. 44 years of practice will do that to a person. I really understand what your saying. I will only say that much without getting myself into trouble. Hehe Please keep liking and watching!
People say stuff like that. I am a senior aerospace engineer. Everyone I work with takes pride in making jet engines and helicopter transmissions. The comment like that is getting old. Maybe when we produce nothing it will be that way. To say we don't produce anything is also a severely ignorant comment.
@@gord2358 Hi! Yes, practice makes perfect. After 43 years I can work on cruise control and don't think much about it as I am working. Thanks for watching!
Replacing the entire seat cover (new part) is a lot easier than fixing part of it, but you might not be able to find a replacement for your vehicle and if you do it will be more expensive.
I couldn’t help recognizing how you referred to your customer as “my customer” & “happy customer” instead of THE customer. You, my friend, show enormous respect for people like me looking for craftsmen faithful to us and our needs. Thank you for that!
Richard, besides being a dear friend, is an artist! Not only does he deal with repairs just as in this video but is also a first-class model airplane designer as well as being a super honest and exceptional person. True Story!!!
Hello Skip, Thank you so much for the wonderful kind words! I tried, I tried, but no takers at the time. Several years ago I told my step son that I would give him everything. Now he is a mid 30's nanny looking after someone's three kids. Go figure... Please keep liking and watching!
I did upholstery with my dad. He however did all the sewing and I did take down and replace. We did few automobiles and used hog rings in those days. I loved doing hand work. Probably why I ended up being a metal specialist journeyman welder. I still miss the upholstery. You sir are an expert to the highest level.

As a DIYer, this is something I wouldn't try myself. Amazing Craftmanship and a common problem with older vehicles. I would absolutely like to have someone like you make the repair for me. Big advantage not messing with the airbags.
@@oldschoolautoupholstery Personally I wouldn't try the whole thing myself, but there's a lot here that can be done by any DIYer before taking the piece to be repaired to a skilled upholstery pro.
This is my newest favorite channel! Your personable demeanor makes this a pleasure to watch- on top of the golden knowledge you share. At about 14 mins, when you're sewing the pieces together I was like "That's going so smoothly- it doesn't look very hard." ten seconds later I was like "Uh, after 40 yrs everything looks easy. This does NOT look so easy for me to do.."
Hi Roger! Thank you for the warm compliments, it means the world to me. After a while, things come naturally, then sometimes I realize I am in cruise control mode... Thanks for watching!
I really appreciate the way that you share your experience in a straight forward manner. In the future, having seats will be subscription based. Just seats, not heated. Its a shame theres so little interest in AWESOME skills like this, I'd love to get to this level.
I’ve got a question for ya. For outdoor materials, hiking, camping, tarps and such, what affordable diy machine would you recommend? Mending and making diy nylon or canvas tarps, boating items using sunbrella and such.
@@flatlander6928 Hello Flatlander, For lightweight materials like nylon, I would think you can use a home sewing machine, but with UV thread. Anything like canvas or Sunbrella type materials, I would go with an Industrial type sewing machine. Please keep liking and watching!
I miss old school craftsmen like you (i'm 70) and I hope you are mentoring some charges in your shop . I truly appreciate your talents and sharing to the masses !
Finally someone who still understands the concept of customer loyalty. Throwing in something additional for no additional charge is going to pay multiple times more that what you would make by tacking on a nominal charge for something like foam repair because people will come back and make multiple referrals because they feel you treated them beyond fairly and that you didn’t get their job and then start nickle-and-diming them simply to line your pockets. This is the kind of shop that would earn my business for life. Places that hit me with the “add-ons” never get another dollar out of me or anyone I know because it’s a “shifty” way to run a business and makes me question your integrity when you initially quoted a price and suddenly start adding to the cost. If you’re a pro you should be able to anticipate any potential extras and either build that into your initial price and warn me that it may come up on the front end. At the end of the day, throwing stuff in for free wins customer loyalty and referrals!
I love watching a skilled craftsman at work. The scissors are just an extension of your hand, your mind like a well programed computer, and the sewing machine like an old friend that knows where you're heading next. Thank you.
First video of 2023, welcome back. I hope you all had a great holiday and I enjoyed the video. I wasn't aware of the air bag needing reset, good info to have.
Wow! Thank you for noticing! Happy new year to you! Yes, the dreaded yellow airbag wire. Stay away! People say to disconnect the battery. I just don't do it.
Looking at the seats in my van, knowing they need some attention. Walk in the house, open the computer and BOOM... there you are. Like Roger said below "I could probably do that." Then I also realized watching a master can make any craft look easy. I will be going to a qualified upholstery shop. Keep the local businesses alive and thriving. Fascinating to watch how the different stitches are done.
Amazing display of craftsmanship. What part of the world are you from sir and would you do some repairs for me in Australia. I know its an outrageous cry for help but you are just what I need for my car seat repairs. Cheers George
I visited your website, you seen like a kind person who really cares about people, I'm so glad to see there's still good people in the world. I've always been amazed by you automotive upholstery craftsmen. I have no idea how you learned what you know but I do know this every vehicle I've ever owned I've wanted or needed the seats upgraded with better fabric, or I've wanted in the case of my 1970 Chevy C10 the whole cab upholstered. Seat A custom headliner and overhead storage box and cb mount. They have always been very high quality work. And worth every dollar I've paid. You guys truly are the apitomy of old world craftsman. Great vid ❤

Richard, just found your site here and it's great... got a 92 Geo Tracker tow car that needs the exact same repair. Small back-story that you and viewers might enjoy: I retired as a Fleet Manager for Pepsi Cola and before Pepsi Corporate bought our franchise in Ventura in the 90's. We kept our vehicles a long time (now they are replaced every 5 years approx.) Anyway, we had some older cabovers that got heavy use delivering soda and the seats needed to be reupholstered frequently. Paul at Mac's Upholstery in Ventura did all our work and one morning I was sharing some stories with Paul about my time in Vietnam (1970's) and amazingly Paul had served on the USS Forestal (mid 1960's). His job ? Repairing the ejection seats on the U2's that were launched off aircraft carriers back then. I was stunned to find out that this wide winged plane was carrier launched, but indeed they were. Apparently the seats took a beating and Paul maintained them so the pilots had a "comfortable" ride during such a grueling mission and tight quarters. Thank you for your great DIY videos !
I really enjoyed this video. Your style is great, honest and educational. I didn't have ANY idea about the art of upholstery and now I do. I really like your honest advice to others in your industry or the any industry for that matter. The parts about giving away free foam repair and thinking about not inconveniencing your customers by taking the seat out is a great examples of awesome customer service. Keep the great work.
Part of my secondary duties in the Canadian Air Force, between aircraft inspection's, was safety systems, where as I repaired aircraft covers, seats and used templates to make garment bags etc. I really like how smooth your Juki with the walking foot preformed. I really enjoyed the sewing, as my grandfather was a tailor and I came by it naturally. It's not for everybody trying to match inner and outer patterns, and the day's went by so fast. I dreaded when an aircraft came into maintenance, and I had to go back to my regular job.
I highly respect this gentleman, the neighborhood upholstery guy always tells me that the entire bottom has the be replaced, several times I was told this. Hope you are blessed, because your honesty.

Your magic is the mastery of your craftsmanship and only a fool could watch your Mozart-like work and pretend it was within their grasp. Sincerely, I am in awe of your work and the beauty of how you produced this film. Bravo.
Superb seat repair. Quite involved and more to it than I thought. Your patterns were simple looking but great as you factored in excess material. Stitching was impressive as well. Foam backing and repair another plus. Your tutorial and explanation were perfect. Your talent and experience is amazing. Learning these types of repairs initially takes a lot of practice. I don't think I'd try this repair myself these days. Many considerations to be able to complete and deliver an OEM look back to the seat. Kudos for this interesting repair. Was just browsing and decided to watch it. Glad I did and was totally absorbed with this repair. I'll be back!!!!

Same here. There used to be 2 upholstery shops and 5 body shops here in my small town 15 years ago. Now there's 2 body shops and zero upholstery shops.
It was fun watching you do this professional repair. It turned out really nice! I had a chance to learn auto upholstery in high school about 40 years ago. I wish I had pursued it, because it would have been a great field to be in, especially if you want to own and operate your own business! LISTEN UP, KIDS!
I’m a commercial truck washer/detailer. I was just mentioning to my bro-in-law that I’m thinking of including seat/upholstery repair to my services for my clients, just yesterday! Now I come across your video doing one on the same type of trucks we detail every week! If this ain’t God telling me- IDK what is! Thank you sir for the inspiration! My Dad told to do this years ago.
Hello Big, There was a time I was doing commercial truck seats, only I fell into the trap of doing them too cheap, wholesale dealers. Stick with retail customers who will pay 100% retail. You will double your income. There is plenty of work out there. Just go for it! I stopped doing dealer work about 10 years ago and never looked back. Now, I get calls from dealers and the first thing they mention is that they are a dealer, knowing they should get a cheaper price. I laugh and tell them that was a big red flag. I tell them it doesn't make sense to me to do the same amount of work for half the price. I tell them I don't do dealers... You know, our dads are always wiser than us whether we want to admit it or not, they had life experiences before we did. Please keep liking and watching!
So amazing to watch a master craftsman illustrating step by step tutorials like this. We need more people to apprentice themselves with skilled mentors like Richard especially now with our supply chain problems. There is nothing like being your own boss in a business that you enjoy and really without much competition. I hope there are many young people that watch this video and realize there are great opportunities if you become a skilled professional in many trades, especially in the automotive industry.

I really enjoyed your step by step explanation. Your voice was relaxing and the whole video was fun to watch. Great work and keep up the excellent work.
I was a little worried about this video when he mentioned not removing the seat. Very impressive. Watching him work that material…I can see years of experience. Really good job on the video and the repair. Love it!!! This is one of those videos that made me subscribe immediately. Much respect Sir!!!
This video helps make one realize the few hundred it likely costs to do these repairs is worth it- looks easy, is not! Making it look "easy", you help people realize that's with 30+ years experience! Well done
Thanks! You're video won't provide me the expertise to affect this repair myself, but now I have the confidence two of cars can have seats restored easily. I can also relay the insight provided to whomever conducts the repairs for me.
Hello Anangels, Thank you so much for your support. You have done what most people will not do. I appreciate you. I love hearing good news like this! I'm sure your seat will get done on both cars. Please keep liking and watching!
Mad skills dude, way to go! You reminded me of my great uncle, a custom tailor from Italy. That part of the driver's seat is always a telltale sign as to how much wear and tear on a used vehicle. Sadly skills such as yours are becoming scarce here in the US. Thanks for sharing!
The "hook tool" is actually a cotter pin puller. I've had one in my tool box for 40+ years, since I was a kid installing auto glass. It's one of the handiest tools I have, great for odd jobs, reaching in tight places, all kinds of things besides pulling cotter pins (I don't know if I've ever used it for that). Thanks for the great video,
Hello Dave, I believe because it has so many uses, commenters have a name for whatever they are using it for. I have used it for cotter pins, not because I thought that's what it was for, just grabbed the tool (Hook tool as I have always know it) out of my tool box, because it was the best tool for the job at the time. Thanks for watching!
Wow! Thank you. I learned a lot. I've wondering about swapping the left and right seat cushions in my car. The drivers side has minimal wear, but to swap it would give me another 10 years on the seats. It looks pretty easy to remove/ replace the cushions. I'll have a look when it gets warmer outside.
You have incredible skill and artistry. Your manner is so relaxed and confident, perhaps from years of experience. Well done and thank you for sharing.
You are truly an amazing craftsman. You make it look so easy like anybody could do it but I realize it takes a lot of experience to do it like you do. Excellent job keep up the good work.
Great job , workmanship, care and patience. I could never do it myself and would be more than happy to pay someone like you for quality work. Seems like you not only do quality professional work, but at a reasonable and fair price. 👍
Been a tradsman 27 years good to see another journeyman @work,people forget your not paying for the work your paying for the years Spent learning that trade👍
This is what's known as a, "master craftsman". Spending 100K plus for a college degree is nothing more than supporting the debt enslavement usury system, when you could apprentice for free, and learn a trade that will provide for you a lifetime income.
A true tradesman. This is decades of experience distilled into twenty minutes. Priceless stuff, I'm gonna try this and not get ripped off by people who will half-ass it.
Wow!!! I used to have an interest in this when I was much younger, So cool to see it done. Love how simple you make it look. I will leave this to folks like you. Thank goodness we have people with different skills. Thanks for sharing!
You made this look easy (which it is not). I pride myself on being a jack of all trades but I tried fixing/making boat cushions one time and found out that this isn't something someone with no experience should attempt to tackle and expect to end up with something that even remotely looks good. It was really interesting to watch your technique. Wish I could do this myself but after my one bad experience it's something I won't try again.
You can just tell that he is that rare type of tradesman that no matter what they do, you would use them once by random or recommendation, be so impressed by not only has skill but also his wonderfully genuine honest attitude, that you would never go anywhere else, or let any one else you knew! Here in the UK, believe me when I say - nobody gives a shot about you or anything you care about! Of course I know they are still some, somewhere, but I'm still looking!
Hello Craig, in the UK, Thank you for all of your wonderful kind words. I really appreciate you. Well, we try to keep it real right? Please keep liking and watching!
Fantastic work. Consider working in the airbag deployment zone while the system is energized though. Would be safer (for you) to learn how to disable the airbag system. Also, all modern airbag systems are continually monitored - meaning if you unplug the seat and plug it back it the system will know that. As long as it’s reconnected correctly, no SRS light
No one can do this at home, so we must find a guy who does this work. I have three upholstery shops in my town and none will make a small repair like this--they make it a major operation costing many hundreds, or they just refuse the job.
Awesome repair. You make it look too easy. With a cost factor for a repair like you did, is it more cost efficient to buy a replacement seat bottom cover & install that?
Great job man! Even if I had access to a sewing machine I don't think the repair would turn out that well. I'll stick to fixing engines and suspensions! haha Enjoyed watching the process! -Glen
Watched this video with the hopes of doing the same job on my truck but I don't think so now. You man are a master and make it look easy. Way out of my league. Hats of to you sir.and thanks for the lesson.
Awesome watching that come together! In the beginning, my first thoughts of the reference marks were somewhat cloudy. Awesome how they made the piece take shape. Not so much in the automotive world, but in Construction, I have always been very fascinated watching the insulators make removable insulation covers for piping applications. I cheated on my upholstery job. I ended up buying the whole seat panel and have yet to replace it. Thanks for the takedown information as well. That’s what I was looking for just to get an idea of where to start! Love the content! Best of luck to you!

I truly appreciate your talents and sharing to the masses !
Hello Mark, Thank you for all you're wonderful compliments! Please keep watching!

Richard, just found your site here and it's great... got a 92 Geo Tracker tow car that needs the exact same repair.
Small back-story that you and viewers might enjoy:
I retired as a Fleet Manager for Pepsi Cola and before Pepsi Corporate bought our franchise in Ventura in the 90's.
We kept our vehicles a long time (now they are replaced every 5 years approx.)
Anyway, we had some older cabovers that got heavy use delivering soda and the seats needed to be reupholstered frequently.
Paul at Mac's Upholstery in Ventura did all our work and one morning I was sharing some stories with Paul about my time
in Vietnam (1970's) and amazingly Paul had served on the USS Forestal (mid 1960's).

Part of my secondary duties in the Canadian Air Force, between aircraft inspection's, was safety systems, where as I repaired aircraft covers, seats and used templates to make garment bags etc. I really like how smooth your Juki with the walking foot preformed.
Hello Mic, Thank you for contributing your very inspirational words. If only young people would apply themselves, they could have a better life and provide well for their families. Please keep liking and watching!
I will probably never do something like this; it was just so fascinating to watch. You are a true artist!
Hi Big Time! I really appreciate it. Thank you so much for all of your kind words! Please keep watching!
You made the repair look easy. It is all the years of your experience making it look effortless. You really do put your customers first..
Hello Kenneth, Thank you so much for all the kind words! Please keep watching!
Truly a master craftsman! Wish I could find someone like you in my area.
Oh, Wow! Thank you for the wonderful compliments! I really do appreciate it. I hope you find someone soon! Please keep watching!🙂
Wow! You took a complicated repair and turned it into an absolute work of art! Very nice job! 👍

I really enjoyed your step by step explanation. Your voice was relaxing and the whole video was fun to watch. Great work and keep up the excellent work.
Hello Frank, Thank you so much for the kind words! Please keep watching!
I was a little worried about this video when he mentioned not removing the seat. Very impressive. Watching him work that material…I can see years of experience.
Really good job on the video and the repair. Love it!!!
This is one of those videos that made me subscribe immediately. Much respect Sir!!!
Hello Todd, I really appreciate the sub! Thank you so much. Please keep watching!
This video helps make one realize the few hundred it likely costs to do these repairs is worth it- looks easy, is not! Making it look "easy", you help people realize that's with 30+ years experience! Well done
Hi! Sorry for the correction but I still love you! 43 Years. Thank you so much for the wonderful compliment! Please keep watching.
Hello Schell, Thank you so much for saying so. I really appreciate you. Please keep liking and watching!
Hello Guy! Thank you so much for all of your kind words! Please keep watching!
Such patience, this guy is a hero!

Also known as a booger hook
@@src4409 Hello S RC, Haha! I have not heard that one! Please keep liking and watching!
Wow! Thank you. I learned a lot. I've wondering about swapping the left and right seat cushions in my car. The drivers side has minimal wear, but to swap it would give me another 10 years on the seats. It looks pretty easy to remove/ replace the cushions. I'll have a look when it gets warmer outside.
Hello Drew, Yes this is another way of doing it! Thanks for watching!
Hello Lynn, Thank you so much for all the kind words! Please keep watching!
Great job , workmanship, care and patience. I could never do it myself and would be more than happy to pay someone like you for quality work. Seems like you not only do quality professional work, but at a reasonable and fair price. 👍
Hello G, I really appreciate all the kind words! Thank you so much and please keep watching!
Been a tradsman 27 years good to see another journeyman @work,people forget your not paying for the work your paying for the years

Outstanding job! You certainly made a difficult job look easy. Thanks for sharing this knowledge on TH-cam!
Hello ScoutCrafter! Thank you so much for all of your kind words! Please keep watching!
This is what's known as a, "master craftsman". Spending 100K plus for a college degree is nothing more than supporting the debt enslavement usury system, when you could apprentice for free, and learn a trade that will provide for you a lifetime income.
Hello Mr C, I could not have said it better myself. You are 100% correct. Please keep liking and watching!
Chill
Just because you wasted your time in college doesn't mean everyone wasted their time
AND I WENT TO LAW SCHOOL FOR NOTHING DUDE...IT SUCKED!
I make what I paid for college every 3 weeks, worked for me but still appreciate a person that masters their craft.
A true tradesman. This is decades of experience distilled into twenty minutes. Priceless stuff, I'm gonna try this and not get ripped off by people who will half-ass it.
Hello Hermit, Thank you so much for all of your kind words. If you try it you'll like it! Please keep liking and watching!
Wow!!! I used to have an interest in this when I was much younger, So cool to see it done. Love how simple you make it look.
I will leave this to folks like you. Thank goodness we have people with different skills. Thanks for sharing!
Hello M, Thank you for you kind words! Please keep watching!
Hello Rich, Thank you so much! Remember, it is the bad experiences that we learn from. Please keep watching!
Hello Mike, I thought this was a video about auto upholstery... Thanks for the comment, Please keep watching!
No one can do this at home, so we must find a guy who does this work. I have three upholstery shops in my town and none will make a small repair like this--they make it a major operation costing many hundreds, or they just refuse the job.
Hi! I love the smaller jobs as they can get done quickly. Thanks for watching!
I truly hope that you are more than adequately compensated for the amazing work that you provide.
Hello Je, That is the only way I work. Thank you so much for saying so. Please keep liking and watching!

Thanks
Iam trying to find sumone to the same job on my truck , how much does dat job cost , help, where u located at
I would like the phone number
4 this guy
I am in michigan
Great repair & attention to detail. What would a repair like that cost?
Where are you located??
Awesome repair. You make it look too easy. With a cost factor for a repair like you did, is it more cost efficient to buy a replacement seat bottom cover & install that?
Great job man! Even if I had access to a sewing machine I don't think the repair would turn out that well. I'll stick to fixing engines and suspensions! haha Enjoyed watching the process! -Glen
Hi! Thank you for the wonderful compliments! I really do appreciate it. Please keep watching!🙂
Watched this video with the hopes of doing the same job on my truck but I don't think so now. You man are a master and make it look easy. Way out of my league. Hats of to you sir.and thanks for the lesson.
Hello Will, Doing is learning! Thank you so much! Please keep watching!

Thank you very much, sir! You don’t know how many people you help with your videos. We all appreciate it.
Hello Justin, In the beginning, I felt like no one was watching... Thank you so much for all the kind words! Please keep watching!
Hello Craig, I hope you now have a better understanding so you can complete your project. Thank you so much! Please keep watching!
