Great explanation! I worked in a shop for several years during high school and college, mostly doing headliners and vinyl roofs for car dealers back in the 70's. We used an ancient De Vilbiss gun that my boss had purchased in the late 50's. It worked wonderfully! We never cleaned it or emptied it, and aside from the occasional clogged tip, it never failed. The only maintenance it ever got was when it started shooting strings of adhesive (usually after sitting for the weekend or holiday), we'd put a finger over the nozzle and pull the trigger. It only used 30-40 psi, so it never hurt us, and if it stayed plugged, a little gas on a rag and a quick scrape from a thumbnail, and we were back in business! Nowdays, I'm doing my own upholstery and the cheapo Harbor Fright siphon guns work excellent! Thanks for sharing your expertise, your technique is spot on!

Thank you so much for these videos!!! They have been a great help to me. You are a good soul and wonderful teacher. I am a little long in the tooth to be learning another trade but I seem to be developing a talent for marine upholstery which is basically all I do. I also have a great teacher up here in northeastern mass. Well, patient at the least.!! A quick video of your sewing table showing how you do the actual stitching would be a huge help to me and probably many others. I slapped my forehead when I realized that using a spray gun for the adhesive had *just* as lazy a maintenance and clean up routine as I'd tolerate. To think, all these years I'd dismissed the idea of a more "professional" setup, when it's just as easy to use as a spray-can, but with better results. Face-palming again.
I love the random-number tips, Richard, almost as much as I love learning from other people's experience/mistakes to avoid some of them myself.
While everyone learns #98 really quickly, but ... I've already suffered from not realizing how important #71 was. Lucky for me, I was mounting foam or sound deadening materials to the BACK of panels that no one could see nor touch.
Probably best that absolutely, positively no one else knows even now. Erm... except you... me, and.... anyone else on the internet that reads this!

hello Richard. I finally finished part of my first upholstery project, the front seat re-foam and sewed new cover for 39 Chevy front seat cushion. It turned out fairly good with welted seams and half inch foam backed pleats. I am also learning to sew too and I had a couple of seams that were the first to be sewn that opened up so I had to go back and resew them. Consequently it is slightly crooked. It still looks pretty good and I had to get the tape measure out to make sure they were crooked. I think I have got my industrial machine dialed in and using 135 thread and it is sewing good now.
in relation to this video, I at first sprayed the back of the polyester velour with glue and got it on so thick that it soaked through and stained the front side. It was a small piece and the first time I sprayed glue and it wasn't too bad a thing to throw it away. Now I spray at a distance as you tell us and it works out fine. Sometimes I give it two light coats.

When that glue you sprayed at me came out of my monitor and hit me in the eyes, mineral spirits didn't work to unglue my eyelids...Technique 1630 didn't work on me so what do I do now? :) Always enjoy your videos Richard. I appreciate today's lesson and yes I will keep watching and liking !

So glad you went over this! Bought a gallon of weldwood the other day and i already have a cheapo gun that i used with for tractor paints.....gonna give it a try. The only thing i am wondering about is the really long dry times on foam application and then cutting.

If you are not using for a time, put whole gun in refrigerator, i have a small bedroom fridge for the shop. Works good when it's really hot like phoenix 110'+, also for painting I do more paint keeps the dry spray down. Life hack to share with all of you! God Bless.

I live in show low area now Peoria was too hot after the heat strokes, I was Chase Customs and Hot Rods then, disability retirement you know. Dabbled in upholstery on some of my own stuff, went to Simon in Litchfield for the last time on my 54 Bel-Air sled. You look familiar though.

I've found that the glue that has made it inside the foam cells dries a lot slower than what stays on the surface. When the wet gets forced against the outer dry as what happens when sticking the pieces together it reactivates the dry which then stops being sticky again. At least that's my theory. As you say better to stick the two together right then and give and/or it much more time to dry completely.

I've been lied to for years! I was always told there are only two happy days in a boat owners life,... the day he buys it and the day he sells it. Now I know that's a lie. It's actually three days, The day he buys it, the day he sells it and the day he picks it up with new upholstery that Richard has done. On a more serious note.. since I know you read all of the comments, I'm trying to figure something out. On my lazy boy there is a edge that is sewn around the back. It appears that the leather edge is sewn face to tace and 1/4" of an inche from the edge. Next, the cover is turned right side out and the edge is sewn again about 1/4 " from the edge making, for lack of a better term, a decorative welt around the edge. The issue or concern I can figure out is how to keep the initial sewn edge out as far as possible so when the decorative welt is sewn the original seem is as far out as possible. (The initial threads are at the very edge) I tried sewing the decorative welt as slowly as possible but it was impossible for me to keep the initial threads "pushed" out or near the edge. I then tried to use basting tape and folded the 1/4 edge agains the basting tape. This worked but not well. The tape wouldn't hold the edge very well folded back on itself. Richard, any thoughts on this type of "welt" and a best method to use in doing this operation? I don't remember seeing you do this type of "welt" on your videos but lazyboy go crazy with this welt. I look forward to your comments and maybe someone else can benefit from your response. I'm sure you have a techinique number for this operation.

These spray guns are only 9.99 at HF right now, I think they are discontinuing them. I have three...if one gets gooped up I just use a new cup and leave the one with dries glue in the bottom soaking in mineral spirits for when I have time to clean it

good info in the video but I think not all the glue from a box store will work well when sprayed, you could spray it?, yes, but the DAP you are using is perfect to be used with a spray gan and the tech sheet explains tip size etc.

thank you for the video really help full. only question is I'm doing Valure very thin material, and the glue is seeping through and I'm at an angel letting it fall and doing it as light as I can and it still bleeding through. is there anything I can do to stop it or how can I wash it off?
Hello Jet, I think the problem will always be the very thin material. You might have a better luck with a thicker material. Contact adhesive is removable with mineral spirits. Please keep liking and watching!

Hello, i am making a bed cover for a pickup truck. I will be gluing automotive vinyl to a sheet of aluminum. I plan to use the same glue you show in this video. Do i need to scuff up the aluminum with a sander before applying the glue, so it will adhere to the aluminum ? Also i am concerned the vinyl will absorb a lot of the glue. Should i apply more than 1 coat of glue before i lay the vinyl down on the aluminum ? Will the hot sunshine affect the bond of the vinyl to the metal ? Should i use a brush or roller or a spray gun ? I only want to do this once and get it right. Any advice or tips for my project would be greatly appreciated ! Love your how to videos ! Thanks in advance 👍😁
Hello HHS, You are so welcome! Well, here we go. You can glue landau or tonneau vinyl directly to aluminum. I would never use any other kind of vinyl. 1/4" Landau pad would make everything look a lot smoother. Be sure to only use a contact adhesive and nothing else. Can be applied by brush, or spraying is best. No need to scuff the aluminum as contact adhesive is not paint. Contact adhesive IS the adherence and sticks to anything. One even coat is all you need. Work in the shade, not the sun. Well, there you go. Please keep liking and watching!

couple questions, on vinyl do you cut your patterns smaller on the stretch ? also on leather do you cut patterns to exact profile plus the allowance or do you take any stretch in to account? I taught myself how to sew many years ago, I actually wanted to do upholstery and did a couple cars but it has been 20 years and starting to get back into it again for my own personal cars.
Hello Non, I used to think about stretch a long time ago. I was thinking too much. The better fit guarantee is to just duplicate the original patterns. Allowance is also over rated and some people think this is rocket science, but it's not. Just go for it! After a while it becomes a force that comes naturally. There will be a flow to it. Just think how satisfied and proud you will be of the cars you will have done. Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery thanks , yeah I found your videos helpful getting back into it. I’m gonna tackle biggest project I have this time a 65 Lincoln in black leather. My first cars i did came out pretty good if I can say, for no training and learning off some books I think I did ok, even got me a brand new Juki back then. I purchased the spray gun you recommended from Harbor Freight. The spray guns they now sell (green handle) have a 1/4-18 NPS air inlet. That is a straight thread and all readily available air compressor quick disconnects are NPT (national pipe taper). Therefore, the connection can't be made. I called Harbor Freight and they can't tell me what is the male thread that goes into the spray gun but I am thinking it is also straight thread maybe with an o'ring seal. Being unable to connect to my air compressor hose I am going to have to return the gun.

I went back to Harbor Freight and found the solution to the connection problem. I bought a Central Pneumatic air regulator (with valve) for $7.99. It has a 1/4-18 straight thread connection as needed to the spray gun and a 1/4 NPT inlet to attach the hose quick disconnect fitting. The compressor pressure is set to 90 psi and the regulator at the spray gun is set to 40-45 psi. Anyway thanks for the tips.

I just bought the HF Spray gun. the instructions say not to run it over 45 PSI. I notice a valve on yours but no gage? can you tell me how you regulate it? I have been doing leather for years by painting on the glue ( Very Messy) I hope this works for me.

If i did use a paint gun and probably wouldnt use it for a very long time, whats the best stuff to use to clean it? Would i just use the mineral spirts also to clean it?
The reason im asking is cause i bought 2 guns a long time ago at a garage sale for $5 and just set them to the side and never used them. Now would be a good time to use them seeing how i need to replace my top on my camaro😂

Okay my top finally came in and I have everything but the cement glue😂. Nobody carries that type in stores. I did see the brand in a spray can, gallon size and larger size cans. Have you ever used that brand in the spray can? If not then I will just order a gallon of it and just store it for another project when finished. Either I will brush it on or pull out one of those old guns to sprar it with.
