I never bought into the fact that Guy Dexter was homosexual let alone attracted to Thomas. Not one intimate physical touch or embrace between them. It is why I know when the third Downton movie arrives Thomas and Dexter will have parted company. Dexter will marry a starlet to keep his Hollywood career as a leading man. But will there be a place at Downton for Thomas after the affair goes belly up? And would Thomas want to take a step backwards?
For Thomas to get his happiness finally.....and for Lady Mary to be so understanding of his need for happiness. This show. It is phenomenal in all aspects. But the actors and how they are so great......chef's kiss.
So not only does Thomas get the happy ending some of us have wanted - one that he's painfully earned in the last seasons of the show IMHO - he gets to live more honestly - something I didn't realize he wanted so deeply, but makes perfect sense in retrospect - and we see that Mary actually has come to value him and his capabilities, something that I didn't see in her when, in the previous film, she got Carson to take over for the royal visit. And even as he's getting older, Dominic West is still handsome and very charming.
I'm glad Thomas is getting a happy ending with the prospect of love and companionship, but gay relationships in America at that time were still not welcomed in society and was outlawed in most areas. Thomas and Guy can be happy together but have to be discreate in their relationship.
I have watched this again and again. This scene is one of the great feel good experiences I’ve had in decades. I get butterflies in my tummy each time. It really is a beautiful moment.

What I find very clever in this is Guy wanting Thomas to run his household, plan their trips, basically take care of him as a wife/fiance would...but, say the newspaper press were to come in to interview Guy about his career, etc, Thomas would be a part of it but the press would have no idea of their true relationship. Basically hiding their relationship in plain site, quite ingenious. And Lady Mary being very supportive of Thomas' decision...makes me go back to the scene from the original series years ago where she suggested having Thomas act as Lord Grantham's valet when he went overseas, and saying Thomas would enjoy the change and seeing all those sailors in uniform, Lord Grantham asking her how she knows about such things and Lady Mary saying I'm married woman, I know everything lol

My question is what tripped Dexter's gaydar off. I looked for clues in their first two encounters, and other than showing interest in Dexter's career, Barrow was very discreet.
As a gay man myself, "gaydar" does exist and it is something that you have, you just sense it. It may sound stupid, I have experience of my gaydar being 99% correct.
Don't forget that incident with Jimmy not to mention that young man that ended up dropping dead in Mary's 🛏️ bed!! Clearly Thomas didn't want to make the same mistake for a third time!!!
Dexter is a professional actor. I think he is aware of body language and would pick up if there is an interest. He could of had discreet affairs already although he seems serious with Thomas
Normally I can tell If someone like me for the way they look at me. Its not obvious, and some people told me they can't do the same. I'm a woman, girls are not my thing, but i suppose its easier to a gay dude to know If someone else is gay If the person has interest in him, the exchange of looks can be very discreet and very informative.
I think Guy also has a certain confidence in moving through the world. While on one hand the higher up you are, the higher you have to fall, if there was a "gay scandal" surrounding him it seems unlikely someone of his social standing would end up in prison for being gay. Thomas, being working class, literally could, and so the stakes are higher and he has to tread more carefully... especially after the mishaps in early seasons. Guy may feel willing to take a few risks coming on to people. I love how he plays off the totally unnecessary smoothing out of Barrow's clothes like it was a normal thing to do, when it was "I'm just going to pet you for several seconds in case you weren't sure of where I was going with all this"😂
Considering Thomas moved to USA anyways, I wish Julian found a way to get him together (in movie 1) with Ellis. Maybe they could both resign & be business partners & roommates. Their chemistry was much better than these 2.
I came to comment the same thing that there was practically no Chemistry between Thomas and Guy Dexter. It was very disappointing. I was happy he found someone in the end but wish he had the same chemistry as he did with Richard Ellis.

Thomas is so gunshy by coming on to so many men who were not gay. And he got kicked down for it and then falling for someone Ellis. And probably just having a very short-lived 1 week affair with him . The the look on his face when guy leaves the room is priceless and it was one of shock and surprise and W. TF did he just ask me to go to the United States with him? He was like so surprised that in a good way. I don't think I've ever seen him so excited in as best way. They could ever see him as excited. I also think the problem with Thomas's character was that every young knew. Do you put men or Butler or valid that came into the house? He immediately was attracted to them. And that's where he ran into problems like he was very visual. And you can't be especially during that. of time coming on to every single young guy. So I think that's what that expression at the end of this was as though a rock hit him or something. He was like what someone literally wants me? Similar to like ellis. He the look on his face when he realized that ellis wanted him. It's almost like what you don't think you're cute enough to get any guy you want. He has a kissable mouth. I'll give him that.
I'm happy that Thomas got a happy ending, but I kinda wish they would have given him a full romance arc with a long-standing character that goes on for more than one film. Just feels a bit like they were throwing men at him every other season/film and it never worked out (historically correct, I guess). It's just a small gripe, but I would have loved to see Thomas have the type of "slow burn" romance that all other characters got with their love interests
I'm not sure I would start a relationship with a boyfriend who wants me to be his valet and personal secretary. But I guess times were so cruel to gay men that this was the only acceptable compromise that Thomas could find without getting too much attention and raising too many suspicions.

I didn’t like Ellis because he came off like a schemer. His actions regarding the police raid in the first movie rubbed me the wrong way. Plus the fact that he was getting married tells me he got in trouble in London (I.e. was cheating on Thomas and got caught) and was rushing into a marriage to save his own reputation. I like Guy. It was a nice change of pace seeing Thomas be pursued for once. Guy also seems very much aware of the world they were living in, thus why he offered Thomas a job as opposed to directly propositioning a relationship to him. He knows how to be discreet.

Can anyone explain why they make? Daisy's character seemed like a such an airhead and that she could barely speak. Seems overwhelmed just by normal people and acts like a 15 year old actually acts like a 12 yr old. her barely able to soeak, and cries at anything. It's not a good character. I think no matter how young she was if she started at 16 or 18 she would be more mature than this actress is portraying. It's cringeworthy to watch.

He does, he leaves with him, and it is a happy ending for Thomas for once - leading to speculation that Andy will become Downton's new butler.

@@johnking5174 Its to be expected. People move on, lose touch with one another. Just because he is not mentioned by name in the new movie does not mean the characters do not remember him.
@@johnking5174 Fellowes didn't forget. Thomas receives a letter from him in this film, which says he's getting married. Nice little scene between Thomas and Mrs Hughes/Mrs Carson.
