Thomas was so mean because he was so sad and in such a terrible position. Over the series we learned about why he was like that, and got to see who he was on the inside (like his interaction with the children), though that of course doesn't excuse his behavior, just explain it. My heart swelled when he was given Carson's role at the end of the series. They knew all about him after so many years, accepted him, and gave him an even higher position than he wanted originally.
Even though everybody is elated to see Thomas finally getting outwitted by somebody who's even more cunning and manipulative but at the end, one can't help but feel a little sorry for Thomas who tried so hard just to improve a little of his position, no different from people climbing the corporate ladder today and yet he had to suffer so much more. Great acting from both Charlie Cox and Robert James-Collier. Apparently Robert's wife got a little jealous over that kiss on screen and she's right. That is one passionate kiss, considering they are both married!! LOL

Julian Fellowes was notorious for setting up a good plot and then just letting it fade away and come to nothing. In the end the whole series left the viewer feeling cheated.
