I always wondered how the 80gb backwards compatible ps3 (ceche-01) was able to emulate almost the entire library of ps2 games without relicensing of the games being an apparent issue. For what I've gathered they were able to pull that off because the game still played from disc and didn't work as a license key to install the game on the console storage. Sure, it was bareback emulation, not much of remastering artifacts such as in some games of the xbox back compat program and running it from disc will have slower loads. I don't know if the fact of it being hybrid emulation also played a role in it. But that was a way to make it almost full backwards compatible. We all know it's technically possible to do it, it's 2024 afterall. The biggest hurdles are: is it profitable for sony? does it comply with licensing and other bureaucracies?
the PS3 library is incredible and has basically been untapped since Sony hasn’t really put a strong foot forward in emulating it. I really hope these rumors are true
@@wotanmituns33 "is it profitable for sony? does it comply with licensing and other bureaucracies?" I think it comes to cost cutting and keeping people happy. PS3 servers are still up and cost money, same with blue moon updates. The cloud gaming is using ps3's that cost sony money, I would think getting this to work would pay off in about 10 years, which is reasonable assuming the ps6 will keep the same structure as the ps5 (which uses the same as ps4). As far as licensing, as you said bareback emulation would get around this and be ideal, but it wouldnt be crazy to see what microsoft does.
I still have my PS3 and a good selection of PS3 games. I really hope it works like it is on Xbox - put a disc in, PS5 reads it as a digital license, triggers a download and you can then play upscaled PS3 game.

@@MrSnaztastic and games look so much better in rpcs3 you can technically play a 4k remaster of any ps3 game. one day it will be like pcsx2 where over 80 percent of games can run without glitches
RCPS3 has 2555 of 3694 games playable. That’s right at 70% of ALL games. That’s a big number. And a PS5 should be able to emulate these games, at 4K/60. It doesn’t require a monster PC to do so.
You’re right, most ps3 don’t require a monster pc, however the games that people actually want to play do, like mgs4. I’d like to see you get an emulated version of mgs4 running at 4k 60 fps on hardware similar to a ps5. You couldn’t.
Too many people speak on things with 0 knowledge on the subject. Guys, there are plenty of reasons PS3 emulation hasn't been cracked yet. 70% after all this time? Modern PCs can't just brute force these old games and they are are wildly more powerful then the PS3 was. Problems this big require lots of time, effort, and a shit ton of money to figure out
@@d8l835 I didn't come across to anything unplayable in my experience with rpcs3. It it far better experience than playing on original console. Lot's of games have patches for proper framerate unlocks and other improvements like disabling blur etc. Finished 11 games so far, don't have any problems in my end.
I think they will test the PS3 backwards compatibility on PS5 to see if it’s working properly and then slowly make more PS3 games compatible, until it’s perfected for PS6.
Enough is enough. Backwards physical media support is a must or don't bother with it at all. Everything is hypermonetized and predatory with subscriptions and streaming live services. I'm so sick of it.
I just wish they would actually just make physical PS4/PS5 versions of some of their past games. No excuse as to why so many of their exclusives like inFamous, Killzone, Resistance, and Motorstorm are stuck on PS3. Heck, most of them already had collections that had the entire franchise or trilogy in them.
The way their logic works is that the amount of work it takes to port it onto a new platform and make sure EVERYTHING works and looks as intended, while also seeing if they have the time, talent and budget to make any improvements where necessary, sometimes leads to the decision where a full remake would just be a better investment for longterm sales
My guess is that the “select few” PS3 games will be mostly first and second party exclusive games that they didn’t remaster for the PS4- Infamous, Resistance, Ratchet and Clank, LittleBigPlanet, Killzone, Motorstorm games, plus others like Heavenly Sword, Modnation Racers, Puppeteer, and PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale will be their focus to bring to PS5. I think MGS4 will be in a “Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Volume 2”. Still hope some other third party games (exclusive or otherwise) that are missing from modern consoles, like Eternal Sonata, get a port or remaster as well.
There’s so many games trapped on PS3 that are kind of insane. -God of War Saga -God of War: Ascension -Ratchet and Clank Collection -Ratchet and Clank Future Trilogy -Ratchet and Clank: Into the Nexus -Resistance Trilogy -Killzone Trilogy -Infamous 1&2 -Sly Collection -Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time -PS All Stars: Battle Royale
@@ThaBotmonThere’s been rumors of the trilogy remaster for PS5 but I really hope they at least add Chainsaw of Olympus, Ghost of Sparta, and Ascension as ports
Another benefit: If the PS6 continues to use an AMD x86-64 CPU & AMD GPU, the PS6 could be backwards compatible with PS5 games, PS4 games, and PS3 games (via emulation).
Just wanna point this out. Your thumbnails are just perfect. It's never clickbaity but it's always relevant and makes me click right away. Very well designed.
They should at least do if you put a PS3 disc in you get a massive discount on the digital PS5 version of the game. It would still make them money and we can still benefit from owning the game originally
Yeah plus games that have already been released on ps4 like the recent Red Dead Redemption port could also be discounted through the ps3 disc. A perfectly fine blu ray disc from 2010 is not that old to merit a full price.
Nah I rather they give you an option to upgrade to enhance features. So if you have the disc you can just play like it was originally ran on PS3. Enhance features would cost you though.
@@GhostGamer799 The Master Collection will probably use the Original version with better frame rate. I don't see them doing a Resolution bump. Because none of the games from the first collection received any enhancement.
I would really really hope for disk support, there's no way we're gonna see games like Tony Hawk's Project 8 or Proving Ground relicensed, tons of the classic Need For Speeds and just so many third party games in general. I'd doubt they'd bring back og ps3 versions of games that have been remastered already anyway too, disk support would go a long way for all that.
Not getting my hopes up. I watched Mark Cerny talk for two hours, he talked about BC and nothing came of it. I'm playing my ps3 games with or without Sony's help.
"he talked about BC and nothing came of it" What? He talked about backwards compatibility for PS4 titles on PS5, which has been a feature since day one. What part of that talk made you think he meant anything else?
This seems like a pipe dream given how complicated the architecture of the ps3 was. Regardless of what happens I hope that Sony keeps the online services like the store supported on ps3 for years to come.
Native PS3 emulation is actually Sony's killer app. I'd pay anything for a PS5 or PS5 Pro model, let alone a portable PS console that can play any PS3 game downloaded from the PS Store (at at least 1080p/60fps). PS4 games can largely be played on PC (minus Bloodborne, of course) but since a PS4 is basically a Linux PC any exclusive can easily be ported. I wish Sony would even license RPCS3's current work to accelerate the progress.
Funny thing is if they put an entire Cell CPU in the PS5/PS5 Pro APU die in 5nm, it wouldn't even take meaningful space. Chips are so dense today they could probably put PS2+3 SoC altogether in a tiny die space.
@@mimimimeowThe PS3 has two processors, the CELL (CPU) and the RSX (GPU); which is why PS3 emulation hasn't been possible until fairly recently. The RSX isn't a normal architecture, which makes emulating it incredibly difficult.
Like it actually worked on ps3/360/wii/u Or with ps4 games on ps5 Im always confused when ppl say BC would have license issues No it doesn't as long as they don't sell individual gamea
@@Pointman11111Because thats why Xbox Backcompat is so shit. There was some wack ass licensing thing that stopped them from being able to load the games off of the discs, hence why you need to download the games and the disc only works as a key.
It's not just the licensing for the games, it's the licensing for, of all things, the Blu-Ray technology itself. The copy protection and whatnot are licensed, so playing the disc, *regardless of what's on it* requires a license that Sony would have to pay annually.
@@Pointman11111 It's a different deal for games, and that's leaving aside issues like licensed music (which has led to the delistings of many old games that had copyrighted music in them). If your PS5 plays CDs, let me know, though. I was under the impression that laser only reads Blu-Rays and UHD BRs.
Think of how much freakin praise Sony would receive if they pulled a Microsoft with regard to allowing people to play their PS2/3 game discs on PS5. I totally get that would be a terrible financial decision for them, but I seriously think that the loyalty for Sony would freakin skyrocket. It would be an epic investment for them.
How would it be financially bad? If I knew I could play ps2 and ps3 games on a ps5 with great performance compared to rpcs3, I would probably buy the console.
I managed to get myself a Cech A PS3 model and runs! I only play in on occasion when going to game conventions or playing with friends over. Kept it clean and dust free. 😊
I think that the whole certification issue could be skipped by doing what Steam has been doing with the Steam Deck. They make you purchase any game you want, they will say "hey it will work, it won't work, or we don't know if it will work", it's up to you to decide. If it doesn't work, having a policy that allows refund on those titles. No long and expensive certification process, no re releasing, just uploading the roms or reading the disks, like RPCS3 does today. Done once on PS5 and it would be reusable on the future consoles as well.
I would like to be able to emulate a PS2 game on my PS3 that isn’t one of those backwards compatible ones without having to jailbreak it. Those old PS3s break and the newer ones are better.
My whole thing with it all is why does it have to be emulation? PS3 had the most emulated/relicensed back titles for sale (PS1/PS2 games) WHILE actually having REAL back compatibility for those platforms. Why can't we just have an additional PS5 or PS6 model that has all the extra phat PS3 hardware components in addition to the modern X86 architecture for 200 extra dollars (or whatever) that way we can really have an all-in-one machine. Or instead of $200 Portals and Controllers, how about a peripheral with all the old components? That's the kind of solution we need if Sony really wants to close their PS3 server blades and shut down the old PS Store after integrating all its contents to the new one.
The PS3 had exactly what you wanted, onboard components for full backward compatibility with PS1 and PS2, but it failed hard because they made it too expensive and build quality meant it was inevitably going to fail with the yellow light thingy
@@andreigtx1711 This is false. Even though the original PS3 was backwards compatible with PS2 games, some PS2 games would cause my PS3 to freeze. Especially sports games. While it was available, it wasn't reliable.
@@Alex_Logan22 Optional add-on is kind of a good idea, but then it would need it's own cooling fan, maybe even power supply. At that point, why not just buy an old PS3?
I would be fine if Sony just gave us all their first and second party PS3 stuff. Killzone and Resistance trilogies, inFamous colllection, Puppeteer, Folklore, and Motorstorm and so on. We've basically got the vast majority of important third-party stuff on the Xbox Series X|S. MGS4 is the major exception but it's supposed to be part of the next MGS Vol 2 collection anyway. Even if all we got was just the Sony-published PS3 catalog that would be enough. Obviously the more the merrier but getting their own games on PS5 should be the priority. I honestly don't know why they just didn't remaster the lot of them for PS4/PS5 to be honest. They remastered Uncharted 1-3 and The Last of Us and just stopped. They even said a large number of PS4 owners never owned a PS3, which made it never more puzzling.
I just want to play the Getaway again without getting out my PS2 again to play it. I know emulation is an option but its not 100% accurate, always a chance of glitches and some games not working properly.
They definitely lost the technology from the ps3 era, it happens. Cause the cell processor was very advanced for its time and the first party and third party games were truly advanced for its time. it's just very bizarre that now the rumors and in full effect that they were working on a ps3 emulator after years later. I truly hope that these rumors are true however we will see glitches and inconsistencies in that emulator for sure.
I think it makes more sense to have this be a PS6 only thing. Because as backwards compatability exists today for PS1, PS2 and PSP they have to make a PS4 and PS5 version. Which I think significantly slows down the rollout of games due to testing 2 different versions of every game. They'll want to avoid the same situation having to create a PS5 and PS6 version of every PS3 game.
I think it's too early for ps6 better wait for the PS5 can't handle anything then we'll see the PS5 have enough power to run PS3 games Sony just need to shake there pocket money and optimize it
that sets a bad precedent for the niche titles that will get left behind because theres less of a profit incentive to remaster them. backwards compatibility means that whatever game you bought will still be playable regardless of the generation its in
I wonder if they thought about making this an added feature of PS+ essential (it would increase subscriptions if they gave us access to our PS3 digital catalog). And/Or sell a PS3 disk drive attachment like what they're doing with the new PS5 model.
Playstation 5 is more then capable to run ps3, ps2 and ps1 games. Sony have the bios and the kernel from all consoles they can make perfect emulation, like they did with ps4, where the console runs 99% of the games perfectly, ps4 even can run ps3 games, if you pirate the console, ps4 can run ps3, ps2 and ps1 games lol. But Sony like Nintendo, wants to resell the same games over and over again. The problem is simple, its about money. But if they decide to allow the console run everything, ps5 will be the best console ever. But I doubt it they will ever do that, because of the money.
I’m totally fine with no disc playback or license verification ONLY IF these games being emulated/ported will be backwards compatible going forward with PS6, PS7, PS8 etc. Honestly, I would love to see Sony do a PS5 portable or whatever portable that could play these same digital titles on the go natively. I would easily pay for that alone! Adding trophies and actual up rendering is a bonus and definitely worth the extra cost to experience these games. Again, for this to work backwards compatibility needs to be the standard going forward with all console manufacturers.
They could do full backwards compatibility. But PS1 and PS2 games are playable almost on anything (PC, PSP, Vita, Android Phones…etc). It would cost them a lot. PS3 is the only one that makes sense to work on, given that PS3 emulation is still hard even on PC.
If this truly ends up happening, then at the very least Sony really should allow people to use their old PS3 discs on PS4/PS5 so that we don't have to have to re-buy them again, since both PS4 & PS5 still do have the regular Blu-Ray Disc laserhead.
Monetization is the ONLY mitigating factor for PS3 BC. Let's not beat around the bush with this. They wanna sell us the idea of 8K gaming, 120fps, AI, but need more overhead to emulate tech from 2006? Might as well wait til the PS7.......but then they would still be screaming for overhead. There is absolutely no technical reason why I shouldn't be able to put my disc in a new console and play it. The higher ups are so greedy that they won't even content that ID that disc and let me download the file.
Is this legit sony wake up bring all best ps3 games to ps5 either via backwards compatibility or or remaster for ps5 we really need motorstorm ,resistance and killzone back you have nothing that compares to those classic ps3 games
They should have a much easier time developing a PS3 emulator for PS5 since they have all of the hardware's documentation on hand for reference. They could also bundle emulation settings with each PS3 title they sell so that the emulator becomes tailor made to each individual software. I'd imagine that first party titles, that haven't received PS4 remasters, would especially benefit from a Sony in-house PS3 emulator since any technical hiccups or mishaps could be cross-referenced with the original source code that they likely still have stored somewhere.
I really hope that if Sony does end up releasing a PlayStation five Pro this year, because if they do I hope Sony allows the pro ps5’s to be able to allow us to finally put PS3 discs in our PS five, because that is something that should have been on the PS4 and the fact that we don’t have it now is criminally insane. Nevertheless, I still have my PS3 from way back in the day and whenever I wish to play a game that I can’t on PS five I just use the PS3, But it takes up so much space having both a PS3 and a PS five on my desk just to play games that I should already be able to play on a PS five.
PS4 could never handle PS3 Emulation because it's very CPU-Intensive. PS5 can but not at the most optimal performance. Hopefully PS6 has AVX-512 instructions in the CPU.
I would like to see something like a PlayStation Elite. Where one side has a BC PS3 Disc Drive to play PS - PS3 games and on the other side is a PS5 Disc Drive to play PS4 and PS5 all in one unit. That would be a gamer's dreams. Well at least for me it would be.
I'm extremely skeptical about this rumor. Even if it turned-out to be partially true I'm sure there's going go be stipulations like only being compatible with select games ala Xbox One/Series backcompat, or having to download a version of the game from a server instead of just reading the information off a disc, or not being able to use discs at all and having to rebuy new digital versions of games which honestly sounds like the most likely case scenario and in that case I could really care less.
The problem with doing a few limited titles releasing emulated soon is PS plus already has a huge PS3 catalogue that’s only streamable. If the majority of those aren’t emulatedable or we have to wait I could see people getting pissed, especially considering Sony has taken a lot off at times for little to no reason just to probably add back later as anniversary drops or Sly collection, Killzone, etc.
Am sure it'll be similar to the current PS1/PS2 emulation (digital downloads on PSN) rather than your disks working on PS5 via smart delivery, but still i'm glad they're finally working on this it's better than nothing.
people are naive, that's for sure :D Like if Sony kept this super impressive ps3 emulator for themselves until now lol. If they really cared PS5 would have most of the PS1/2 titles running 4k/60 already.
Sony would win big if they let PS5 owners put in PS3 discs. Decreased value from those licensed games can be solved by just reproducing the discs, and it should be cheaper than porting or remaking the games for ps5.
agreed, after all if you’re looking forward to racing games with licensed cars, you’re not gonna be able to play any of it in a million years (if it’s not jailbroken) on a newer PS console if it’s digital only
I still think bespoke devices force the companies to honour the idea of a generational leap forward. With everything being an x86 conveyor belt, it’s allowed them to rest on the laurels of a never ending crossgen.
Honestly, Sony should have kept the backward compatibility access to all Play Station Consoles after PS3. And PSN has no excuse for sold the PSP versions of Tekken 6 and Toy Story 3 when Xbox's Store had both games for the 360.
I don't know why people are somehow acting like it's a travesty it hasn't happened yet. Emulating any console takes years because the hardware you emulate on has to be way more powerful than the hardware you're emulating in the first place. Not to mention the ps3's completely different architecture makes backwards compatibility a damn nightmare
The only difference being that its a multi billion dollars company not some random dude trying to emulate games on his pc, sony can definitely make an emulator or a backward compatibility they have programmers that could do that

I'm so glad I own my original PS3 and slim. But it is true I don't spend most of my free time playing the old stuff. And I still have a backlog on PS3 but I'm holding out on emulation since I'm always busy with current games or ones I'm already into.
Sony, you have millions of customers that still have legacy collections and regularly use legacy platforms. Give us our Playstation Legacy console to play our PS1,2 and 3. Money is not a factor for millions of us. It is the convenience.
Let me guess, they’ll either restrict the PS3 games to the $160 tier of PS+ or make you buy them all over again even though you owned them on PS3 digitally. The amount of laziness is baffling, people continue to lick Sonys boots.
Just make Killzone 1-3 collections with online play(hate that these collections omit online to save money) Resistance 1-3, and the PS3 Ratchet games. I think collections of those 3 series would sell like hotcakes, especially if the FPS games have multiplayer.

I've been hearing rumors lately too about Sony possibly adding backwards compatibility support for PS3 games to the PS5 next and that would be so awesome if that ever does happen, especially considering that PS3 games are pretty much only playable just on the PS3 since PS3 games are not backwards compatible on both PS4 and PS5. If the PS5 ever becomes backwards compatible though next with PS3 games, I also hope it'll possibly include support for PS3 game discs too to where I'll be able to play my physical PS3 games, or the actual PS3 game discs rather, on the PS5 next which would be so cool. If the PS5 also ever becomes backwards compatible with PS3 games next, I'm actually still going to hold onto my old PS3 that I still have and use, which is a PS3 Slim model which I also use as my main PS3, being that the PS5 may not be able to play all PS3 games, especially if it can't play PS3 game discs for some reason. Also, the PS3 that I have is even backwards compatible with PS1 game discs as well which is also something that the PS5 can't really do either even though some PS1 games have been released digitally on the PlayStation Store to play on the PS5 already. I have another PS3 system that I'm also using on my TV which is one of the original launch models which is even backwards compatible with PS2 game discs even though I don't use that PS3 as my main PS3 system.

Hot take but I don't have a problem re-buying these Classic games even though I already own a majority of them, I only feel a handful of these games are even worth getting with the trickling and choices they make. But the emulation has to be up to snuff, the recent PS2 emulation effort is half baked and the PS1/PSP efforts are not the best. Nothings stopping me from playing these on PS2 with my RetroTink-5x or booting up the old jailbroken fat PS3, or PC emulation, but I will re-buy things if real effort was made to preserve these games
I've actually been wanting a lot of PS3 games to see new life on modern hardware myself, I figure some remasters or collections would make the most sense, add more content I say basically before the thought of PS3 emulation being available on the PSN. Either way to see games from back then actually do better than they did nearly 20 years ago makes me happy to see, especially for series like Ratchet and Clank or Infamous where the rest of the series is stuck on PS3, which is a shame since both of their best installments are on the PS3. Hopefully this rumor is true, although PS3 emulation on PS4/PS5 does feel like an inevitability at this point, we got PS1\PSP and now PS2 games to the classics program, it wouldn't hurt to see a little more.
We need a playstation console that has - the ability to play PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4 and PS5 games flawlessly - trophies for PS1 and PS2 games - an advanced trophy sorting feature - a trophy score feature that's like xbox's gamerscore feature because why not - more profile customisation options
The thing is yes they need make money out of this but some games will never ever come to the service that they won't be making money on what would be a good way to go about it would be allow discs to work but a message comes up loading it up saying ps3 discs are not certified for emulation so no guarantee of functionality so if a game exists on the psn it could work better than the disc but the option is there
As someone who is still one of the “one million” ps3 owners still logging in to play on ps3 I hope they figure it out & get it working well.

RCPS3 has 2555 of 3694 games playable. That’s right at 70% of ALL games. That’s a big number. And a PS5 should be able to emulate these games, at 4K/60. It doesn’t require a monster PC to do so.
And rpcs3 works like charm.

Yep
The way their logic works is that the amount of work it takes to port it onto a new platform and make sure EVERYTHING works and looks as intended, while also seeing if they have the time, talent and budget to make any improvements where necessary, sometimes leads to the decision where a full remake would just be a better investment for longterm sales
No excuse?
Their excuse is that it’s designed for PS3 and would have to be built from the ground up.

This was my reaction as well... Like what... we've heard about PS3 emulation for years at this point..
@@mimimimeow Yea in your dreams. Sure that can be done nowadays but it wont make sony more money.
@@mimimimeowThe PS3 has two processors, the CELL (CPU) and the RSX (GPU); which is why PS3 emulation hasn't been possible until fairly recently. The RSX isn't a normal architecture, which makes emulating it incredibly difficult.

It's not just the licensing for the games, it's the licensing for, of all things, the Blu-Ray technology itself. The copy protection and whatnot are licensed, so playing the disc, *regardless of what's on it* requires a license that Sony would have to pay annually.
@@Cryptic0013 Not really
They pay that anyways for all the UHD blu ray players they sell

Think of how much freakin praise Sony would receive if they pulled a Microsoft with regard to allowing people to play their PS2/3 game discs on PS5. I totally get that would be a terrible financial decision for them, but I seriously think that the loyalty for Sony would freakin skyrocket. It would be an epic investment for them.
How would it be financially bad? If I knew I could play ps2 and ps3 games on a ps5 with great performance compared to rpcs3, I would probably buy the console.

Bro it’s crazy how mines still works like it still turns on every night as if there’s an update to download lmao at like 3am then turns off
My whole thing with it all is why does it have to be emulation?

I think it's too early for ps6 better wait for the PS5 can't handle anything then we'll see the PS5 have enough power to run PS3 games Sony just need to shake there pocket money and optimize it
I'm even fine if they remastered PS3 games and sell it at a reasonable price, Killzone 2 at 4K/60 frames will look better than modern releases
that sets a bad precedent for the niche titles that will get left behind because theres less of a profit incentive to remaster them. backwards compatibility means that whatever game you bought will still be playable regardless of the generation its in
We need Also Resistsnce and haze
Sony should hire the RPCS3 developers.. since they have pretty much made every PS3 game playable on PC through PS3 emulation...
Like they remastered psp games .. why not just do the same with ps3 games to run on ps5 like Killzone, Motorstorm & Resistance trilogy’s
I keep hearing it’s because the PS3 hardware was so complex, but there must be a way for Sony to make it work, somehow? 🤷🏻♂️
Just two more weeks for PS3 emulation. :(
What?
huh?
They could do full backwards compatibility. But PS1 and PS2 games are playable almost on anything (PC, PSP, Vita, Android Phones…etc). It would cost them a lot. PS3 is the only one that makes sense to work on, given that PS3 emulation is still hard even on PC.

If this truly ends up happening, then at the very least Sony really should allow people to use their old PS3 discs on PS4/PS5 so that we don't have to have to re-buy them again, since both PS4 & PS5 still do have the regular Blu-Ray Disc laserhead.
I support this, We would be able to download PS3 games and not just stream them.
Yeah I think that preserving the game is always a good move always. Especially when there isn't a real retrocompatibility.

Ironically, PS3 emulation and the ability to play my PS3 discs would be the thing that gets me to buy a PS5

It wouldn't be just for a ps5 pro that won't ever exist btw.... 🤣🤣🤣
But it will be on all ps5 much like series's X and Xbox one....
It might only be certain games. Not our entire digital libraries.
Am sure it'll be similar to the current PS1/PS2 emulation (digital downloads on PSN) rather than your disks working on PS5 via smart delivery, but still i'm glad they're finally working on this it's better than nothing.
They should concentrate on improving the poor implementation of the PS2 emulation first.
100% This. The games are not even properly emulated. Tomb Raider Legend is missing shadow's and is running at 480p upscaled.
people are naive, that's for sure :D Like if Sony kept this super impressive ps3 emulator for themselves until now lol.
If it isn’t by disc this is worthless
I agree.
I understand the frustration but this is better than nothing.
agreed, after all if you’re looking forward to racing games with licensed cars, you’re not gonna be able to play any of it in a million years (if it’s not jailbroken) on a newer PS console if it’s digital only
I still think bespoke devices force the companies to honour the idea of a generational leap forward. With everything being an x86 conveyor belt, it’s allowed them to rest on the laurels of a never ending crossgen.
If somehow sony gets ps3 emulation natively on the ps5, i'd happily buy the ps5.
Agreed, backward compatibility would be a huge selling point for the PS5
Honestly, Sony should have kept the backward compatibility access to all Play Station Consoles after PS3. And PSN has no excuse for sold the PSP versions of Tekken 6 and Toy Story 3 when Xbox's Store had both games for the 360.
I don't know why people are somehow acting like it's a travesty it hasn't happened yet. Emulating any console takes years because the hardware you emulate on has to be way more powerful than the hardware you're emulating in the first place. Not to mention the ps3's completely different architecture makes backwards compatibility a damn nightmare

I didn’t ask for it, but it would be nice to be able to put on my PS3 discs and play those games on my PS5.
i still play cod zombies and little big planet on my ps3. i started playing those stuff as a 3 year old in 2008 and i still play them. games back then were so much better...
If it boosted the games like series x that would be really cool
We knew you wouldn't wait, Ryan.😂
They are slowly filling in that backwards compatibility graphic from the PS5 announcement video with Mark a million years ago.
If they release a new console with backwards compatibility. I'll buy it.
Where did you get that hoodie? It's awesome!
We need a playstation console that has
- the ability to play PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4 and PS5 games flawlessly
- trophies for PS1 and PS2 games
- an advanced trophy sorting feature
- a trophy score feature that's like xbox's gamerscore feature because why not
- more profile customisation options
The thing is yes they need make money out of this but some games will never ever come to the service that they won't be making money on what would be a good way to go about it would be allow discs to work but a message comes up loading it up saying ps3 discs are not certified for emulation so no guarantee of functionality so if a game exists on the psn it could work better than the disc but the option is there
