    Anyway. The Promised Neverland (約束のネバーランド) is a really great thriller that's been killing the game recently and is one of my top 3 shows for the currently airing season. I thought it'd be a good time to take a look at Plot Twists in general, and then see how this story implements two of its twists from the first 4 episodes.

      Potential Spoiler for one of the first four episodes:
      Are you really not going to mention the foreshadowing in the game of tag with Sister Krone?
      She pinpoints everyone’s weaknesses, including Ray’s inability to commit to a strategy... in other words, his plan is to survive, and his strategy is liquid so long as he attains that goal. She practically spelled out that he was the traitor.

    As a manga reader I do love that everyone is enjoying this show so much. And just for the sake of using the spoiler etiquette here's one from a very recent manga chapter
    ***Major Spoiler Alert [The Promised Neverland] Major Spoiler Alert***
    The demons origins have just been revealed to basically be "You are what you eat" They gain the traits of whatever they've just eaten, even when they started out at a microbial level. So at one point they ate humans and gained conciousness and self-awareness. The downside is that if they don't keep eating humans, they as individuals, will revert back to their initial animalistic state.
    I've spoiled enough anyway, I know some people will be chomping at the bit to find out about the demons so I thought I'd give an explanation for anyone that wanted it.

    • @martinnovak1103
      @martinnovak1103 5 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Additional SPOILERS/Theories
      We don't actually know if what we were told last chapter is true. SPOILERS story doesn't quite mesh up with what we were told by Mujika and Sonju.
      While Sonju does want to hunt humans again, there doesn't really seem to be any reason to not belive the part of Mujika having never eaten human meat before, since she even was actively against hunting.
      So the whole thing is kinda fishy and I wouldn't trust normans word 100%.

    • @wahlflower3517
      @wahlflower3517 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@martinnovak1103 Man, I didn't even think of that bit until now.
      *Major Spoilers/Theories*
      Another bit of Norman's information that doesn't make much sense. He says that the demons get weaker/more feral if they don't eat humans. By the way he talks about this, he makes it sounds like that this decline happens quickly like in their human lifespans if they succeed. But not only has Mujika never eaten human (and looks the most human out of every demon we've seen). Sonju hasn't eaten humans in hundreds of years and he seems still as strong as the demons at the hunting ground. Though part of this could maybe be explained if Mujika and Sonju maintain their intellect by eating intelligent demons.
      I feel Emma might be getting the same vibe off of Norman as we are but she can't say anything as everyone else believes in Norman and she wants to.
      Also, another thing I need to get off my chest, just how freaking old is Peter Ratri? He's old enough that he's the one turned traitor against his brother and is the one gave Lord Bayon the hunting grounds which has been running for well over 13 years. And yet when he meets Norman, he says they're not too different age wise. Does time work different between the human and demon side? Or what?

      @ThePreciseClimber 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@wahlflower3517 Major Spoilers/Theories
      I mean, if Peter Ratri was a teenager when he ratted out his brother (say, 15), that would make him 16 when Norman was born. Pretty sure that's considered too young for parenthood in many parts of the world.

    As a viewer the thing I most like about plot twists is something like the feeling of having your faith in your observations and faith in the author being rewarded. You need to be able to identify that something as presented is not making sense or is making more sense in other ways holistically, providing a more complete picture, but then you also have to have the trust in the author to not just be writing a story that is uninteresting or won't address things you've noticed or were mistakes, or were just things you were projecting. I like that this plot twist is relevant to many things we already have seen about Norman and Ray and it reinforces my faith in the series going forward to deliver more moments like this.

    • @shawnjavery
      @shawnjavery 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with you to an extent, but in my experience the best plot twists are the ones where you, as an audience member, don't question what's going on, get surprised by the reveal, but then after looking back you see the signs of the twist earlier in the story.

    Spoiler Alert [The Promised Neverland (anime)]
    At first when I heard Norman accusing Ray I thought he was gonna say "Just kidding" right afterwards. But that plot twist was the first in many years that I couldn't get out of my mind for the past couple of days. As I kept thinking about it, I realized how it might actually be true: maybe Norman only told Ray that he was gonna set up a trap for Don and Gilda, which is why Ray was caught red-handed. Not to mention the FANTASTIC red herring Gilda was. The main reason I thought Norman was joking was because I thought it had already been dramatic-irony-style established that Gilda was the traitor. I even thought that the scene of Gilda acting as if she didn't know anything with Krone was an act to make Emma think that she wasn't a traitor. As I've been thinking about it more and more though, I realized that all of the scenes incriminating Gilda were just really well-directed cuts, and she could be completely innocent. This show is much deeper than I thought it would be and I'm really enjoying it!!!

    • @nerdpiggy
      @nerdpiggy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @Anum Saleem This scene is exactly what I was thinking of when I mentioned how cleverly directed the show is-- I don't think Gilda was the one who slid that note under the door. The way the scene was edited made it look like she did, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't actually show Gilda in front of Mama's door giving her the note. The only thing that makes her suspicious now is why she would go see Sister Krone in the first place... did Krone summon her? Is she (as you said) actually the traitor and just faking innocence because she knew Emma was listening in? If she WAS the person who wrote that note, how did she know the hiding spot that Norman told Don, not her? (if I'm remembering correctly?) It's all so mysterious...

    One of the best sequences in the setup of Ray is when Ray and Emma have that conversation about traitors. Ray pegs one of their siblings as a possible traitor. The implications of this are what made me actively suspect him of being the traitor. He was simultaneously deflecting attention off onto someone else and creating this disconnect for Emma. He is the one telling her to trust no one and between the lines it reads "trust no one but the person telling you to trust no one."
    Further on, Norm's conversation with Emma about what they should do with the traitor made me question if Norm could be the traitor but the exclusion of Ray made me keep him as a possibility. Norman doesn't go to Ray and ask what they should do with the traitor. He goes to Emma. Mostly because he has high suspicion that Ray is the traitor.

    I was so surprised when Norman accused Ray of being the traitor, and then that surprise quickly turned to worry as I realized just how bad it was. I trusted Ray because we got to see him working alongside Emma and Norman, plus he's the "edgy shady reclusive character" and authors usually pull a little floppy and _don't_ put them as the traitor. Plus we see him in the intro with the same type of introduction as Emma and Norman, I was convinced he was sticking around as the pessimist all friend groups needed. And then when Norman said Ray was the traitor, I couldn't help but think "wow they're screwed" simply because he knows _everyone_ who's in on it and helped plan the escape strategy. he knows practically _everything_ .

    i got ray being a traitor spoiled to me and that really did make it so much more interesting because you can actually see how he's set up as the traitor is the scene composition. in the scene where emma, ray, and norman are discussing the possibility of a traitor, emma is standing off to the side and the camera pans between her and the boys, representing how she is blind to ray being a traitor while norman suspects it. ray is also facing away from them and in one scene where the focus is on his face, emma is blurred in the background while norman is only slightly blurred in the midground. in the opening credits, both emma and norman look directly at the camera while ray looks away and then uses his hand to cover the camera. there's a bunch of little stuff like that that makes the show utterly brilliant

  • @Chaker9925

    What i really love about the anime is that most of the inner monologues are not voiced out. It was all just expression, which i think is very beautiful. Like its up to the viewers to guess what the characters are really thinking at the moment. I mean, it wouldn't be as captivating if they talked all the time, though it would explain much more with what's happening inside their head. So i think they really nailed it with portraying their thoughts just through expressions itself.

    Spoiler Alert [The Promised Neverland]
    One of my favorite pieces of information given (which I guess could be a plot twist?) is when Musica and Sung-Joo tell the children that the world they live in has always been occupied with the demons. Where previously we were expecting them to either find a town of fellow humans, find out that the world they live in is post-apocalyptic, or to find some other form of civilization (either a new type of life or something else). Instead, we find out that there is no human towns and that they live in the demon world. This immediately leaves us with a sense of impossibility. I truly think that this was one of the best roads the manga could have taken and it made me rethink my whole understanding of the story.

    • @ReplayValue
      @ReplayValue  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In terms of anime that happen outside of the opening episode (because the foreshadow into resolution is a pretty standard opening move) I immediately think of Acca-13 & Psycho Pass. The latter is particularly impressive because of how it simultaneously convinces you that there's no twist and DEFINITELY a twist at the same time so the audience unsure how to feel.

    Ray is the one who suggested Emma and Norman give the bunny back... he wanted them to know. To realize this. Also, his behavior at the gate is interesting in the first ep. Emma and Norman are speculating and talking about what they would want to do if they left, but ray... ray just looks kinda sad, pensive. It’s seen again after hide and seek when everyone is talking about this again, and his practical “I’ll have to survive first” worried me and was actually what made me suspect him as a reluctant traitor type, before the plot even picked up; he knows more than the other kids, knows more of how the world works and how it can be cruel. His insistence that Emma should suspect everyone, but then his anger at Norman for doing just that with the other kids really suggest he was really trying to get them to suspect him. And then even in the first ep after they come back you can see him gauging their reaction, likely trying to see if they found out. It’s all really interesting, honestly. I’m sure there’s a lot more of little moments I’m forgetting, too, but these stuck out for me.

    Spoiler alert [promised neverland]
    The pov shots have always felt a bit eerie to me. The current pov characters in the anime are : ray, isabella, sister krone, phil and sherry/sheryl (-whatever her name is-). A few pow shots I can remember off the top of my head are:
    1. when the trio is at the fence, a small character is looking through holes in the bushes, phil comes out ahead of Nat and the other kids.
    2. Emma and Norman talk about bringing Ray into the plan. We get shots from the bushes. Ray appears
    3. After the confession, but before the apology. Don and gilda are talking outside. We get a veiw from behind the side of the house, sister krone come from that direction. We also get a shot from the top floor window. A tall character seems to be here, like an adult. Since sister is outside. This is isabella. Another veiw from the dining hall. A short character, small enough to hide under the table when the five were talking. It's most likely phil since he's been addressed as a pov character.
    4. The end of the episode when Don and gilda are in mom's secret room. We get a pov of a small character walking there. This then turns out to be phil and scares the living shit out of gilda and don aswell as us, the viewer.
    There are so many more I cant talk about. Yeah this isn't really plot twists but whatever. I like yapping lol.

    @jjaa_joyjoyartist 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Spoilers for TPN:
    The twist near the end is also a good use of perspective, because none of anything relating to it was shown onscreen until the 8th episode or so, leading the audience to assume that the kids still have no idea what's happening even though Don and Gilda began telling people down to 5 the truth about the farm since the fourth episode. The secret conversation Emma and Norman had wasn't brought up until that point, and the plot stuff with traitors, Krone, and Isabella swept that mystery aside, like the demon lore or outdated tech. So when it becomes relevant it really messes with the perspective of the show from the 4th episode on, and it rocked me how deep the characters went with the plan.

    (SPOILER ALERT) [The Promised Neverland]
    {This is a end of season spoiler so probably finish the anime before reading}
    I feel like it’s very important to mention that Ray only assists Isabella because he is her actual birth given child. This gives her a soft spot for Ray. My idea is that Ray is similar to the little kids who at a VERY young age understand the secret of the house. I also think there’s a possibility that Ray was even told the secret of the house only because Isabella, his mother, wanted to ensure he would keep his test scores up and at least live till 12.
    Overall that makes this whole speculation about Ray being a traitor irrelevant especially since we eventually see Ray escaping from the House with everyone else in the last ep. But I’m also curious if Isabella was going to actually let him die in the first place??? If anyone has any speculation on this please let me know.

    Q: is the orphanage being a farm really a twist. honestly I saw it that way when i read it for the first time, and even when I watched ep1. after recolection it seems way more like the story/ world hook, than anything else.
    through all of Ch/ep 1 everything seems too good to be true, and in a way that doesn't make the series feel like its going to be a slice of life. all of chapter 1 you're waiting for the moment that tells you what this series will be. And the reveal is the hook that captures most viewers attention for an entire arc. Sure it does come from left field, and could be categorized as a twist, but i feel not enough had been established quite yet for that title to fit proper.

    I dont think Promised Neverland does plot Twist, it only does reveals. It may be a plot twist for the Characters in the story but definitely not for the viewer. Since the anime does everything to draw the viewer's attention to the unsettling hints, we'r all expecting something we just dont know yet. Non of the reveals significantly change the trajectory of the plot nor re-contextualize prior events from the "Viewer's" perspective (not the characters), so no twist at all, just reveals.

    SPOILERS SPOILERS
    I see this so often when people mention that part of attack on titan. Why do people think eren being a titan was the plot twist? The plot twist was a titan punching another titan while one character was surrounded by the two of them. Eren being said titan is then blatantly given away they dont try to hide it or surprise the reader with that, thats why the entire time prior to the punch you don't actually get a clear shot of him. It's genuinely surprising and completely flips the story on it's head up until the point, since it happens a few episodes when you already get the sense that all the rules are already established. It's 100x more effective then what the promised neverland tried to do.
    They blatantly give away that something is wrong instantly in the anime with that weird ass opening, in the manga they don't give anything away until the testing scene, it was so much more shocking, and then the game of tag when they first reveal they are in an in an enclosed location. The demons aren't really a plot twist, so much as it's just shocking and kind of random. We already know something is wrong, we just get to see what that something is, and we have no way of knowing it's demons cause there is no set up whatsoever. Just set up for the fact that "something is wrong here", which is again blatantly given away at the start of the episode, a real disservice to the manga.

      It's a typical character design of a character who tries to give no fucks towards others. Such as Levi. A pure genius design upon the logical thinkers. Just as how Norman's eyes are smaller than Emma's. Their size goes based upon the trio's logical sides. Ray is most logical due to his sacrifice in the numbers in their plans by leaving children behind in his plans due to the actual reality of demons eating them. Norman is both logically and emotionally influenced towards this escape due to his empathy towards Emma. And Emma is just super emotionally influenced by her idea of a Family.
