The kids are not your typical idiot shonen protagonist, with every situation being presented to them relying on their wits and careful planning. While Emma is pretty innocent acting, she really shines in intense moments and knows when there is a possible threat. Hopefully the anime does well because of what's to come after the escape.

Like you've talked about, truly to me one of the best things about Neverland is how it turns these archetypes and expectations we have of such shows sideways. And not in an often edgy trying-to-be-different way; in fact, for a rather dark premise, it doesn't end up being overly edgy and nihilistic, maintaining the glamour of hope that shounen carries in a realistic/believable way. This turning of expectations is prevalent throughout the whole show and I do hope people take note of this because of how great it is! Emma being a female but still shounen-esque hero is one obvious token of this, another being the main trio themselves. We're allowed to root for protagonists that are intelligent but fallible, a variety of different "kinds" of smart associated with different personalities. It's realistic. Risks feel risky, but death doesn't saturate the plot. Neverland avoids running headfirst into tropes, but also avoids trying too hard to not be tropey. It's that kind of well-written story.
If it makes you feel better, just treat the cast like actors where each character dies they’re off the role and preparing for the next set. The kids and the monsters laughing and having fun behind the camera. Lol helps me cope. Story shits depressing sometimes.
Think about this: this show's first arc has the same plot as the movie Chicken Run. What's more, Isabella kinda looks like Mrs. Tweedy and both main characters are Gingers (except Emma's name is not Ginger, it's, well, Emma)
i love videos about the art of storytelling. This is a great video. It's concise, not drawn out. It explains everything in a manner easy to understand. More please.
Thank you for this vid. It reminds me of an interview with the editor. There was recently an interview with the editor of the manga and he talked about how the author originally wanted to make the series much more tragic (assuming more deaths). The editor said that wasn't good because the shocking moments would be the selling point and that if they did something different the hope and triumph shonen is known for would be presented in an interesting and new way. I think you and me both can agree that this was a good choice. Btw @TPNmanga on Twitter retweeted the translation if you wanna read that.
But no one dies later on expect for "those two" which was a bad execution in my opinion. I mean they fought two of the strongest demons yet there were no deaths or injuries at all.
Excellent video! I have read the manga too and I think you've very well talked about why people should truly be excited for this special series. It's going to turn people on their heads!
Well in a way , it does in symbolism. Like you know how there was a version of peter pan that kills the kids before they can grow up ? It seems same thing here, except the kids are ship at a certain age never growing up
I was wondering, since My Hero Academia is gonna be like the Naruto of this generation (Not a bad thing tbh), I wonder what this hype show is gonna be like. The Fullmetal Alchemist? FMA of this generation. Smart, but extrovert protagonist that's it after (in this case, freedom) a goal that connects with others. However, this has more of a death note feel when it comes to strategies, tactics at level of HunterxHunter and has shown to be as gruesome as AoT and it's not scared to kill characters.

This comment is for the guy in the chat I spoke with. For more complexity I say involving body language/behaviour and allow the audience to interpret situations for themselves (show not tell). The plans themselves aren't really ground-breaking, intricate or creative. However, I did stop reading so maybe the plans evolved over the chapters. Also more believable characters (kids behave adult sometimes). Other issues other than complexity are the obvious plot twists to in episode 1 and to come. Damn that intro fire asf
I finished reading the manga last night and I'm absolutely in love with this series. With the comparisons to other series though, I was kind of surprised to see Death Note but since I was never into that series I couldn't really draw the similarities. I can somewhat see it with Attack on Titan, but when I watched the first episode and started to read the manga, the only series I could think of was Owari no Seraph.
