When the kids escaped the House, there was a line for Isabella that got cut out from the anime.
‘I wish I could have just loved them normally.’
Yeah that line was heartbreaking
Tho in the anime when she pulled out the ropes they ziplined tho it was 10x more dramatic than the manga
OMG that's even more heartbreaking
was watching the dub and pretty sure they added something like that at the end.
I legitimately bawled when I first read that
TIME TO CRY NOW
Using the song Mama learned as a child for the OST the whole time only to reveal it at the end was a stroke of genius
True one of the mindblowing concept of Ray's nature and rare ability when he was still a fetus
wasn't that also the song she was humming when she was walking conny to her death?
Stella Stardust yep.

lee Oliver also the fact that the Op is Ray’s POV, Ed 1 Is Norman’s, and Ed 2 is Emma’s is absolutely stunning :)
When she thought her actual son had set himself on fire and she said "I hope his brain is still fine" I was like, man that's what I call a 100% genuin love....
Doesnt Matter ikr that’s real love of a mother
she wanted his brain to still be fine so she could still feed it to the monsters because they believe the brain to be the most delicious
I dunno chief, she genuinely loves her son, but I'm pretty sure at that moment her psychotic side was the one speaking.
She wanted the brain so the demons can eat it or she'll be in big trouble
Well, There should be a lot of r/wooshes in these replies
When she told Emma to become a mom, it was like she “felt” like Emma was in her position. Helpless, especially now that Norman is gone, she thought that Emma felt the way she did when Leslie was taken away. Though obviously, it’s not the case since unlike her, Emma is willing to do whatever it takes to get away and save her family.
very true
true, i was wondering why in that scene of her talking to emma in the infirmary and then she stands still at the door and looks back at her crying, like bruh why u sad for? but then her flashbacks came on and when leslie left, she literally looked like she was in the same position that emma was in. but in that case, isabella gave up all hope and decided to avenge him by living. she was a smart one and one of the best, if not the best, mom out of all the plants since she had the best produce. now i know why. it’s because she did all this for love. in the end, she did love them
she saw the hopefulness in emma and wanted to break it in order to let her keep living as much as she could.
i think about this shit so much, man

If crunchyroll doesn't give "villain of the year" award to Isabella I swear....
There is the Beast Titan. So no. Also, since it's a voting thing, Overhaul and Beast Titan might take it by sheer popularity alone. Hell, as much as I can see Mama winning, knowing what I know about Attack on Titan, I would give it to BT anyway.
Crunchyroll don't give shit. Their awards are pretty much governed mob rule, so there is almost no chance of Isabella winning in the same year as a season of Attack on Titan or My Hero Academia
Crunchyroll will give All for one best villain again even if he ded by now
KEKKA DAKEDA Diavolo shd win best villian. No question asked. A mediocre series like AoT cant compare to JoJo
Nah, the boss from Jojo will probably get best villain
My favorite line from Isabella is the one she adressed to Phil after the evasion :
"Don't worry, they escaped safely."
This line let so much get through. The idea she is genuinely glad they could do it, the intention of not hiding the truth to the kids anymore, but also the statement that Phil didn't fool her : "I know that you know."
I too hope she will get more screen time as the relationship between my two best polar opposite favorite characters, the selfless Phil and selfish Isabella, can only evolve into something great since they stop playing the mascarade. But at te same time, I can't see Isabella surviving the failure of keeping the children under control.
Mmm have you read the manga???
I agree the flashback of Isabela made me feel so sympathetic towards her that I cried for her in the end because of the implication that she'll definitely be punished for the escape.
Her setting her hair free might say that she has given up and lays with the rest of the kids as a way of cherishing what little time she has left.
my favourate is "I wish I could have loved them normally"
that bitch defo fired. she dead as hell
Here is my theory: cattle children have to come from somewhere. That somewhere could be adult women, perhaps the ones that started the training to become mothers, but didn't pass. Emma's mother, Norman's mother, and so on. Isabella could be one of them after the scape. She'd be in horrible conditions, but alive.
I... I just wanna see her running towards Ray, yelling: "My baby!", okay? Seeing how his little boy grew up so much...
I binged it and came to the conclusion that Phil is best girl

The cliff scene was perfect.
The rope connecting the wall to the cliff has been loosened and Isabella's connection to the kids have been cut off. She accepts her fate and wishes them a safe journey as she reels the rope in, a common thing parents in the real world do: She's letting them go both literally and figuratively. The way she reels the rope back in sadly and the way the rope desperately tries to connect to to the other side show just how distraught she was. She wanted to go after them, but she decided against it.

I don't think she decided against going after them so much as the implant in her chest would've killed her if she had left the property

I personally thought Isabella was an EXTREMELY complex and well written character. Was SUCH a good villain in the show.
i think the best thing ever is when a show creates a character you're directly meant to hate, before revealing how complex and extremely human they were. and holy fuck do i cry every time when she reveals her true intentions. 'they were all so small... so small... i wish i could've loved them normally'? damn that shit fucked me up and recently i bought the manga and can't stop crying every time i read it. every single time. isabella fucked me up. god i love her character so much.

@098765 Craper The farms were built to keep in children under 12 who have lived there their entire lives there and who would have been killed if they gave even the slightest hint that they knew what was going on. Not to mention that almost all the humans on the outside of the wall and GIANT MOTHER FUCKING TRENCH were completely fine with the farms. Sure North Korea has a bunch of soldiers but the farms were made so not even the caretakers of the children dont know anything about the outside world and kids wouldnt even get on the wall before they were killed.

Yes
we all know it's not Isabella's lullaby but it's associated enough that becomes hers.
I feel like the demons are the true villains here. They're controlling Isabella, and making her do all of these horrible things. It's kind of sad honestly.
Once you read the manga you'll realise something.
No villian is actually completely evil, like isabella who is controlled by the 'demons', the demons too have a reason of why they do what they do in which is uncontrollable. No one in truely 'evil'.
Yes but why couldn't Isabella just help them? She loved he children yet she brought them to their deaths. I think Isabella was a really selfish character but I loved her anyway.
@@bertinfeutcha677 bruh, there are the grandmothers, the demons, and the fact she isn't even allowed outside or else she dies. Isabella keeping the children inside the farm and killing them that way is her own twisted way of keeping them safe as the outside world is WAY worse than living comfortably inside the farm. She was trying to prevent them from fear and trauma and to the best life she could.
It's like farmers they raise animals for meat and food we all eat we are not evil it's just the way things are and although we love animals we still need animals to eat. It's a food chain that's what I've noticed when I watched the anime it's a system that has been going on for a long time.
Well yeah, no
Isabella is such a great character! I was so scared of her and all I could feel was hate, but then the narrative becomes more and more complex and it really constructed a believable and relatable person in Isabella. I really felt her pain and understood her.

@@maem7462 I thought she was extremely beautiful, but was terrified of her. But, when the narrative expanded, I understood her completely and saw myself in her. I may have made the same decisions, honestly.

The only death im happy was andrew's death and also the queen
You dont seem to realize the gravity of Emma's actions and Mama's reaction to them escaping.
You learn from Krone that if a Mama makes even a single mistake, they are punished, even killed. The final moments of Isabella staring off and wishing them to live a good, long life as she watches them escape is her knowing she is about to die. Isabella allowed half her children, her cattle, to escape. There is no way she would ever escape punishment, and she knows this.
They did the impossible, they made her deepest dreams come true, and because of that, she is genuinely proud of them as if she were a real mother. It's the mentality of "they did what i could not. and for that, i'm okay with dying."
A line thats cut from the anime is "I wish I could have loved them normally." And once she's back, she even tells Phil "Don't worry, they escaped safely."
And this really, really drove the point home that she is allowing their escape, and ultimately her death, to make up for all the pain she has caused. She isn't making a return appearance, and even she knows this. It's what makes her actions in the finale that much more heartfelt and painful.
Haven’t read the manga but from a corporate standpoint it would be an utter waste to kill Isabella. The demons need her because she has the best quality children. To kill her for her mistake would just create a bigger issue for them when their food quality drastically goes down. If it were any other mother they would be eaten alive quite literally, but because it’s Isabella I doubt she would be killed off so one notedly
@@itsameprincesspeach touché but Isabella probably expected death anyways
Fully agree, starter
I absolutely hated Isabella for most of the series, but after finding out how Moms were selected, I started to wonder more about her past. When Norman asked her if she was happy, and she had that brief moment of surprise & introspection, I knew there was more going on there.
Then this last episode man, that last minute revelation about Ray, the look on Isabella's face when she realized damn near broke me. I cant remember the last time I took such a big 180 on a character. One of my favorite season ending episodes ever. I cannot wait to see where season 2 will bring us.
I had a similar experience. When my boyfriend and I finished that last episode, most of what we had to say was "wow, poor Isabella" even though I had been terrified of her every episode before that. That and "she's probably dead after this" being our prediction, though I would be glad to see Isabella again and see how she's changed.
@@sakuramessage Its pretty popular, its topping Shonen Jump popularity charts. So my hopes are high.

The camerawork created a constant sense of oppressive dread that I found really striking. And yes, Isabelle's words and behavior after breaking Emma's leg were textbook abuser stuff... made my skin crawl.
i used to live with an abuser and,,,,, my skin genuinely crawled wheneber isabella was on-screen because she was just so unsettling like 'i have the full potential to hurt you but i'll give you love instead'. it's like she knows you did something wrong, but you knowing she knows and she won't give you the full punishment you're expecting. the anticipation just feels more painful and enduring than the actual punishment.

some parts in this anime got my heart beating fast and they were just talking.
Emma: **opens her mouth**
You: **200 BPM heartbeat**
That's why I love this series, there's a lot of care and thought taken into it.
At first watching, my mind immediately criticized Emma's perspective of "I'll save everyone" as that of a generic protagonist. But in this case, it wasn't used as just a naivete optimist to create a "good guy" character but as a key for their escape. As Geoff said in the video, the difference between Mama's escape from Emma's is that she was thinking of it alone and obviously, escaping by yourself is a no go in this situation. You can't face off alone against a demon specially when you consider the physical inferiority of the children.
Details like this are amazing specially when you piece it along with what you know already. Ray's plan of escaping with as minimum people as possible mirrors the mindset of his mother rather than being a quirk of his "pessimistic" character.
In regards to Emma wanting to sqe everyone and generally being the well-known altruistic type of MC feels more compelling in this type of narrative, since it is made very clear (Connie) that her fllow siblings could die, unlike in those anime where MC does care unconditionally for their friends and do for them; but none of the threat where they could very well die isn't presented.
@@teodoraslozoraitis7409 Exactly. In this case, escaping with everyone means putting them into more danger and Emma knows that. She respects the children to be able to survive themselves rather than a condecending MC thinking that everyone needs to be saved by his hands.
there's also the possible fact that Emma doesn't just SAY 'I'll save everyone' but tries her damndest to come up with waysto save everyone, considering she's not some shonen powerhouse. In order to save everyone, she needed to be smart, resourceful and determined.
The trio's strength complements each other.
Norman = IQ
Emma = EQ + physical talent
Ray = Technical
In a way those three are subversion of shounen tropes similar to Izuku and Bakugou. Emma was presented like the typical hot headed good guy protagonist but she actually isn't naive or dumb. She has good reasons to be so riled up. Instead of spewing empty promises she thinks, compromises and believes in all her siblings' capabilities without the savior complex. Many fell for Emma's cliché facade and criticize her, but I knew she's gonna be great to watch ever since that indirect threat towards Mom, after seeing Conny's corpse. Ray was like the Diet Sasuke type. I thought he'll definitely backstab Emma and Norman at first. Hence Sasuke. Yet he genuinely cares, the guilt of seeing his siblings being shipped off, him knowing the truth since beginning, having to treat his own mother like an enemy and forces himself to learn and lie despite the anxiety he must has in oder to save his friends, all these made him emotionally distanced and shaped his tunnel vision leading up to that suicide plan. Honestly I would rather kill myself too than letting those fuckers eat me, wonder why Krone didn't use that knife like ray would. Lastly Norman. Generally speaking there're two types of this genius character either be cold and arrogant aka. Sherlock, Light or the Armin, Izuku type. It was rather surprising how emotionally strong and sympathetic Norman was written. The scene of him breaking down but still puts on a smile for Emma hit me like a truck. I knew he wasn't going to die however tears just ran down when he got back to the house. Promised Neverland has a lot of care and thoughts put into it both from anime creators and the mangaka. Mad respect. Can't wait to read the manga.

She said "For survival" Yes, like you mentioned, it is a twisted and selfish thought, but she thought that there was no other way. She I feel like since she saw Leslie get shipped off, (the dude that looks like Norman, and Isabella's childhood friend/crush) that made a big impact to her. Her friend was ripped away from her life, and was most likely killed.
Also, Isabella was one of the older one kids when she was a young girl, which means she was also one of the smartest, seeing the order of when they get shipped off. Since she is so smart, when she found out about the truth of the house, she couldn't have just thought of a weird explanation, she faced it as is, and she was terrified.
When she discovered that Emma, Norman, and Ray knew about the house, she acted oblivious to it, and prevented pressure on them, because she truly wants the kids to love a happy life for the short amount of time they lived. She wanted to make those three to feel like they are doing something to impact the family, to help them survive.
She's not a villain in the grand scheme of event but she's definitely the main antagonist of the first season.
"Diet Sasuke"
asdfggjkflsl it's 3am and I did not expect that line.
I really bought Ray's arguments. It kinda hurt when you realize that not only Emma was right but that she was the only option, because then you have to reconsider what you thought and how that might have come out.
Understanding that the other is not a burden but an opportunity is something that a lot of people need to understand, and this anime makes a very compelling argument right there.
I don't remember the last time an anime prove me wrong.
CFV in an anime sense, yes rays argument was proven wrong. But in a real life sense he is completely right
@@TheBrownboy134 it would be difficult to cover all cases, but in the kind of cases presented Emma is right, for things like workplace, highschool and common life
@@TheBrownboy134 and it also works when rescuing genius children
I haven't watched the anime yet, but as I was reading the manga, I agreed with Ray. The other children would just be such a burden and probably needed to be left behind. Thinking that made me feel bad, since I felt sorry for the poor kids that would be abandoned, but I couldn't imagine bringing them along. It didn't seem like it would work. But it turned out that Emma was right - not just because she's a cliche "nice" protagonist that wants to save everyone - but because she knew everyone else was a valuable part of the escape. It was really interesting.
I thought the whole point was that they were both right and both wrong in their own ways. Emma made the compromise to leave behind all the kids under 4, after all. If she had stayed as stubbornly idealistic and naive as she was in the beginning, she probably would have gotten everyone killed.
“Diet Sasuke”
First of all *how dare you* How dare y’all! Sasuke at 12 was a bumbling idiot too busy being an edge lord to to pass a chuunin exam let alone arrange a mission impossible with 15 kids.

This first arc alone of The Promised Neverland is a masterpiece itself........!!!
(The other arcs are really great too, but this one is my most favorite)
And they animated it so so SO darn well!!!!

holy moly, already read the manga up till its latest chapter but still can't stop the feelings of tension, sadness, happiness, and FEELS in the anime..........great directing & this series earned alota praise and deserve tons of it!!!!
Aah! I like the manga very much too! my favorite arc is the battle against lord bayon, and the others! that was pretty gore, but super cool!
TPN is a pretty good ride. It kinda suffers from the same issue as Academia, in my opinion, in that, at the end of every epic arc, the narrative kinda feels like it loses its way for a little bit before it picks up again, but thus far it has never failed to pick back up again.
animations and visual was bland.
stop your blind fanboyism
Goldy Pond hands down the best arc
I feel like the next arcs will be much better translated into anime form since they're more focused on adventure, action and mystery/worldbuilding, as long as the animation can handle it properly that is. It's like it becomes an entirely different story genre after a while, and I like it as much as the first arc.
[Manga spoilers after this...]
Still, people really seem to like the Goldy Pond arc, but to me it all felt like a giant detour. The main plot device (Minerva) was still getting developed to an extent, but the focus on action, combat strategies and so many new characters kinda ruined the excitement for me, since before that point in the story it was more about exploration and the mysteries of the demon world. It was still a good arc don't get me wrong, but I feel like it overstood its welcome.

When you think about it, Ray is a lot like his mother, just in this case, selfless
That is true
One of my favorite Isabella lines is probably when Ray said, "Mama, why did you have me?" or something along those lines if that wasn't it- and she replies, "To survive." again, I think.
It really shows you how she backed herself into a lonely corner, without even considering that there was a door right there. She had to survive, but even with her high IQ, she never came to the conclusion that there was a better way to. Though, it would've required trust, not just an exceptional IQ. Isabella was truly a threatening antagonist, but all in all, she really was just one of the cattle children. What an experience it would've been if Isabella and Leslie would've been born along with Emma's generation.
"spoilers for the promised neverland in this video." aw shit comes back 4 hours later alright NOW im ready
Finally finished the 1st season. I love the mind games and the tension in each scene
I pissed myself when I saw the scary face of "Mom" from the first episode.
Another great anime villain: Medusa from Soul Eater; clear intentions, wonderful writing and contrast to the protagonists, and very, very dark.
Medusa is one of my top villains. Also the sadistic motherhood she does to Krona...
Griffith is the perfect example of a anime antagonist. Arguably the greatest antagonist ever made in anime/manga history.

Have you read the manga? If you think Ray is a good character NOW, just wait...he only gets better and better with every chapter!
@@panjamysy you had me in the first half ngl 😂
Isabella kind of reminds me of Illumi from Hunter x Hunter, both of them has obsessive love of what these children could be. Even if it means hurting them emotionally or physically. They love the children truly but their messed up childhood makes them both put the children in the same childhood they had and despise. Both don’t want them to suffer more than they have to. Mama’s “don’t escape it’ll only make things worse.” Illumi’s “don’t make friends they’ll only hurt you and you’ll only hurt them.”
Spoilers for the manga:
I like how they didn’t spoil Norman was alive. I believe it wouldn’t have been as effective that early on.
Also chapter 100 made me love Phil even more with him saying things like “he’s a bit like don” “I know the truth. The adoption is a lie. Simon is being harvested today. He’ll never be able to grow up.” “Is this what ray felt like?”
a little weird comparing an emotionless asassin to a woman who controls a farm but it kinda does make sense

I'm an anime-only, but I didn't just finish binge-watching the show... I had to suffer through the week-long waits.
Being caught up to the manga is even worse, you get 1/3 of story compared to an anime episode with as impactful cliffhangers as the anime had.
@@Exolvee Dang it, that was supposed to be my escape route in case I started dying to the definitely real disease walking corpse syndrome.
@@zaarongaming8174To put this in perspective, in the manga, it let us think Ray was dead for like two weeks. One chapter ends with the house on fire. It's a while before he's shown alive again. I actually expected the anime to do the same just to twist the knife.
The manga also has inner monologues, though. And those provide tons of insight into some scenes. Like when Isabella was looking at Emma in episode 2, she was actually checking her pulse. But Emma didn't just ask about Connie for no reason, she wanted to see Isabella's reaction and seeing her give no reaction and blatantly lie angered Emma. In fact, she was struggling to maintain her composure and that's when Ray rang the dinner bell, effectively saving Emma from Isabella's scrutiny.
We also get some more minor things like the kids cleaning house before Krone arrives. Norman originally thinks Isabella is keeping them busy to prevent escape only to realize later that they cleaned out space for Krone, Isabella was rubbing their noses in that fact, and he didn't even consider the possibility. This happened after Ray was brought on but before Don and Gilda were so it further explains why Norman suspected Ray first when Krone arrived.

They start to use guns a bit later in the manga which is still pretty badass
The most terrifying thing about Isabella is she isn't evil, she's apathetic. You realize this as the series goes on, and apathy becomes even more terrifying than straight evil. It's in stark contrast to Emma, who's the most empathetic character in the series. She's willing to put herself in harm's way to save her family. Isabella has made herself as apathetic and numb as possible to deal with her situation, meaning she no longer operates for her own benefit nor would help the kids. She's operating some a state of survival, almost as if following a script she was handed with no regard to herself or others.
This anime just made me realize that you dont judge a person if you dont know her story and what a person has gone through
"I really hope she isnt written out of the story completely"
Me, a manga reader: *sweats* Welp...
I actually haven't given up hope on her reappearing somewhere down the line. We never saw her die, and I find it a little hard to believe the demons would just kill her off, while it was stated several times she was the most skilled and clever Mum in all the farms. My guess is she got punished, but not by death. Maybe they're experimenting on her in a farm like Lambda...

ray is such a relatable boy, I love him
Ray is best boy.
Couldn't agree more, he's my favourite character and undergoes magnificent development, not only in the first arc which was covered by the 1st season, but in later arcs as well.
Also I have nothing against the Sasuke jokes as he does give off a Sasuke vibe and pretty much fits the dark, brooding young anti-hero trope in many shounen manga, but I wish people saw his character is a lot more complex and well-written than Sasuke and the like.
There's a lot more to him than that, and the anti-hero trope is powerfully subverted by making Ray increasingly rally behind Emma's collective ethos starting from the point where she prevents him from committing suicide. He becomes a great team-player, which just fills my heart with joy.

Didn't feel rushed at all to me. The only thing missing was the inner monologues. I think they adapted it perfectly especially the part with Lindsey's song.
@@Unreal_Ra Exempting the inner monologues are fine as I don't believe they are suited to the animation medium. There are plenty of other techniques and methods to replace them.

How to create a good anime villain
Step one: give them a sad childhood flashback
It's rarely effective, most of the time it kinda feels cheap tbh lmao
Lorn Warbler Agreed! Sad childhoods come across as copy and paste nowadays. I get it, they were abused as a child and never took the time to better themselves as a person in adulthood. Instead they wanted to rage out against everyone else thinking they’re justified.
What really makes Mama’s backstory impactful is because of the society she lives in. She had no choice and decided to make the best out of the cards she was given. It’s more than a shitty childhood it’s a whole shitty life.
Every human character we see is another person trying to live their “best” life in this world or rebel the best they can in this world. That’s what makes Mama so interesting, because you can pick any other character and compare their decisions.
