since you mention violet evergarden, i really wander why i connect so much with frieren rather than violet herself.. when i saw this anime yesterday, i cried at how beautiful it depicts how time flew so fast that relationship that you taken for granted actually has meaning and memories that make yourself regret not spending more time with the people that you care about, whereas in violet with the same theme, i can't relate at all.. maybe it lies on some of the executions of frieren that makes it truly special
i agree. i much preferred the stories of the episodic characters (specifically episode 10 of course) rather than violet's story herself. but in frieren, im much more interested in the main cast rather than the episodic characters, probably because usually in these episodic scenes, they all tie back to frieren's old crew.
@@konopi7539Episode 10 hit so much harder for me than Violet's own story because it's more tangible. Losing a parent, or the eventual losing a parent, is real, and will happen to everyone at some point in their lives. For someone who has a positive relationship with that parent, that thought hurts even when you know that death is inevitable. I can't relate to Violet's story, though not to say it was bad or anything
For me, Violet Evergarden is more like a soldier rediscovering herself, acknowledging her PTSD, and then standing for herself... (If there's a gateway anime i have to recommend it would be VE, Kaguya-sama: Love is war, Oshi no Ko, and now Frieren. )
Always had The feeling that Violet was really not supposed to relatable. We are put in The same place as the people around her, baffled by how distorted her person is. In a way, she also does not accept herself. It's only when she starts to understand all that she has been through that we also start to be more involved. I think it makes The first leg of The story really hard to watch, but it makes The payoff hit Just right, a mix of happy that it's gonna get better but bittersweet for alll The time lost. Frieren is Just a lot nicer through
I love fantasies with this softer aesthetic. Frieren, Grimgar and Mushoku Tensei all just work so well with it. It makes me feel that all fantasy should be a softer aesthetic because it really helps sell you on the world. A lot of modern anime have such forgettable art and only really impress due to the writing or due to the action and it's such a shame that they just forget one of the key parts of what make anime anime!
Okay, I just found you and watched your Apothecary Diaries video, LOVED IT. Immediatelly watched this one. I can say, I've been adoring Frieren every single second since I've found the show, but you gave it SO MUCH more value than it already had. Thank you! One of the easiest subscriptions of my life!
Replay Value covering Frieren, hooray! Always love your analysis and how they make me have a deeper appreciation for the colors and lighting in particular. And surely by the best piece of foreshadowing yet to come, you are referring to the potion that only dissolves clothes...
My favorite moment in this anime is where we the viewers see a quick montage of Frieren's ventures with Himmel and friends in flashes while the music in the background was building (the fight against Qual, Aura, the journey North and ending with the party standing before the shadow of the Demon King's Castle) it was so... nostalgic? Which is weird as this show lets us experience the similar feeling of nostalgia in spite of it not being our journey.
One of the things that I enjoyed, especially in the manga, is that they took advantage of a "generic" fantasy setting with a Demon Lord. This allowed Frieren to really focus on telling the story of the characters, and also allows small towns to be characters of their own too.
As a massive JRPG fan and adventure fantasy fan, all tje call backs to classic franchises are awesome, and they are done in a way that isn't too wink wink and jells well with the tone and story.
There is also something about the naming convention beeing all german words. Frieren means to freeze/shiver, Himmel means sky but also heaven, Eisen is iron, Heiter means cheerful with a serene undertone, Fern means distance and can be used for a sence of the unknown and Stark means strong. Even Ende means the end as you could guess.
Thank you for this wonderful review of “Frieren”’s opening four episodes. In a “banner year” (2023) for anime, I think this may be a serious contender for the year’s most outstanding series. You brought out just how much hard work and thought went into the production - I hadn’t noticed all the fine points of the visuals (colour palettes, for instance), but you’re right about just how much they bring to the experience. There’s so much more that one could bring out of these first two hours - I feel one understated aspect of “Frieren”, is as a love story (Frieren and Himmel) with a twist (he died before she realised they were more than friends, and her quest is in part because she wants to “make it up to him”, and perhaps meet his soul in Aureole). I look forward to following Frieren’s journey… and I even bought Vol 1 of the manga! (My first-ever manga book purchase…)
Thank you, this was such an amazing summary of why I love this show so much. Now I can just share this video to explain it to my friends instead of trying to find my own words hehe
Beautiful and very accurate review. Madhouse be flexing big time with Frieren. One of the most beautiful introductions to a fantasy world. I also really broke water big time when Frieren first sees Himmel's Blue flower. Powerful feels! I have read all the ENG versions of the manga, and this Anime version is literally the Manga story brought to life word for word, cell picture for cell picture. If you love real Fantasy, Frieren will break you, big time.
5:55 i like she pretended it was a cleanup quest when really she wanted to drag out time to get to the festival. Just staying for no reason Fern would have never done. Though later an old lady spoils the surprise but by then it is obvious this is also why they clean up. So they can enjoy the moment they waited for. By then Fern is committed and understanding of Frierens motiviaition and helps reaching this goal by dragging Frieren across the finish line who otherwise wouldn't have seen or understood the payoff of her own scheme. It all loops around perfectly! This was, long before the labyrinth, a flawless self-defeating moment. Frieren happily took the loss in order to win. Even if she had to (gasp) get up early! Which isln a way was a bigger challenge than her own clone... 😅
this made me cry in the first 15 minutes of the episode, That was when I knew, I am in love with the series. it's so majestically sad not because it's a sad story, but because it's beautiful and special.
What I feel : serenity. Slow pasage of time. I cried on the manga months ago, even before they announced the anime adaptation. *And, I'm crying, MUCH MORE, after watching the anime.* A LOT. One of the best anime adaptation I've ever watch, and one of the very few anime which makes me contemplate about life a lot. Only very few anime change me, including Frieren's.
As a fan of the novel and manga, when i see the first episode, i rediscover the story and enjoy it even if i know what append after. Before i know it, i follow the personnage, the sound and emotion to the point that i cry. In short, a masterclass, just how many year pass since i love a serie like this.
As an anime-only, I can already feel that this is going to be one for the ages. Also as an old school Record of Lodoss War fan, I can Imagine how sad it would be to follow Deedlit after Parn's death. OK, now time to rewatch Magic Circle Guru-Guru to cheer up!
So glad you mentioned that. As soon as I started watching it made me think of Record of Lodoss War and thats a great thing. Anime has become so oversaturated with shows that use the high western fantasy setting as nothing more than a shallow skin...its so refreshing and satisfying to see a new show have the actual soul of that genre.
@@Bones12x2 Am I the only one who feels the Lodoss anime is pretty shallow ? It's pretty but I feel like like 7 episodes nothing really happens, Frieren is just miles better.
This wasnt a anime where i was jumping out of my seat and getting super hyped, but its still one of my favorites, because its kept me more invested than any other anime i can think of
Rewatching this, you notice the little things like Eisen and Heiter clearly being the best of bros during the adventure which probably explains why they stayed in touch
I cannot overstate how adequate the first opening and ending are for this anime. They're just perfect, both visually and lyrically. They highlight Frieren's thoughts and emotions so well it's honestly amazing, while still managing to be real bops. The sheer love and dedication that were given to this show are obvious, and it really sold me on a show I really didn't want to watch and love at first.
When I saw that the composer was Evan Call, I knew I was gonna break down AT LEAST like twenty times. He understands the power of silence just as much as the notes themselves. Even something as simple as, in Violet Evergarden's case, the tapping of a typewriter. All this to say, Evan Call understands the assignment, and earns himself an A++
I REALLY LOVED your Hyouka stuff and somehow I forget about this channel. Then this video appeared in my recommendation, I'm so glad you make one on Frieren.
This is by far the best video on Frieren that I have seen. I already thought it was a great story, but seeing your insight and analysis has made me realize that I need to watch it again .... and then read it again.... More tears await me.
Watching Frieren knowing that it's from Madhouse is like watching an artist putting together the best parts of their previous hits to deliver a complete and unmistakable masterpiece. In this anime I'm seeing elements from their previous work; the slow but deliberate pace of ACCA-13, the impactful delivery of subtle emotions in A Place Further then the Universe, the clever and detailed sets in Death Parade, the smooth and vibrant action sequences of One Punch Man, and so much more. Huge credit for the deep and touching story provided by the manga. But this series works as an animated show because it is done by the studio that has given us the best of Anime.
I fell in love to this anime the moment I saw a preview of it on Facebook. It's a breath of fresh air since I've been watching fast paced anime for a while now. It's nice to have a chill anime to just watch and relax
Nah I only listen to a few TH-cam channel speak about anime or movie that catch my attention and this guy is one of them you've earn yourself a new subscriber

I think this is the first vid I've watched from you but I'm amazed by how your analysis in Frieren compared to all the other anime videos I"ve seen about it!! I'm a fan - keep it up!!
this is the first review i've watched about "Frieren," and it truly is a stunning piece of work. i'm finding it difficult to put into words just how impressed I am while watching it. good job
It cannot be helped to be compared to Violet Evergarden. The tone of the anime, characters and especially with Evan Call handling the music. Though Madhouse is not KyoAni... I hope for the Madhouse will bring justice to the anime.
Finally got around to watching and finishing this anime the other month. Cannot understand my friends when they say the start is slow and they're uncertain how the anime will pan out, when the first episode itself is so shockingly good it honestly beggars belief. It's not everyday you can unironically saying *everything* was on point, but that's exactly what Frieren's first episode was to me, and even after completing the anime, I still find to be the strongest episode in the entire 28 episode run.
always brightens my day to see your videos. I'm glad to get another rec from you, sometimes it feels like it's getting harder to find good shows. I think this time i'm going to start with the manga, you just jogged my memory - I meant to read this.
Amazing points in every part of this video! You also made me realize a missed a bunch of stuff despite having watched multiple times already. I also love how Frieren's earrings were once Flamme's. Every choice made in the anime has been such an incredible one that has heightened every aspect I loved about the manga. It has enhanced my experience rereading the manga as well, because each of the small panels that depicted time passing has been brought to life with beautiful animation and music... It is everything I wanted and more for the anime. Plus Tanezaki Atsumi is my favorite female voice actor so when I saw she was cast I was soooo delighted. Nobuhiko Okamoto is also really good as Himmel. The OP made me fucking sob... The lyrics.. !! Manga spoilers ahead !! I had such a fun time rereading the entire manga after I watched the first four episodes. I devoured it in two days and actually gained a newfound appreciation especially for the Macht of El Dorado arc which was quite boring to me when I first read it. I think that was mainly because when I first caught up to the manga it was the start of that arc, which then took over a year to come to a conclusion. The Macht/Glück dynamic was not very interesting to me during my previous rereads and I couldn't get a good sense of the fight scene with Denken, but imagining everything glittering in gold, especially when Macht plucks three strands of hair, transmutes them into gold, and throws them at Denken I was like FUCk this shit is goooood. And it's all leading up to the Solitar fight which is definitely my favorite demon fight of all time in the manga. I also can't wait to see who they cast for some of the later characters like Serie and the Lawine/Kanne dynamic is going to be so funny when animated. I'm already too excited for the Aura the Guillotine episode coming out next week! And I can't wait for when they'll animate Flamme's: "the moment you leave your mark on history is when you kill the demon king" plus the whole montage of Frieren's life up until Himmel invites her to be part of their group... PLUS OFC "the one standing before you right now is a mage who has lived for at least a millennium" with her huge flames of mana... We've barely seen mana animated at all so far so I'm so fucking hype for that scene. Rant aside thank you for this great video! I'll definitely check out your other videos when I get the chance :)
It gave me the same feeling as the first season of Mishouku tensei. People just slowly go places or do stuff. It makes it feel like the real adventure and the world very grounded and alive. Thinking back Mushishi did the same thing.
I was so pleasantly surprised by this series! I thought it was gonna be another generic fantasy anime, and only checked it out because i saw a post about it but oh boy its so good! So thoughtful, you can feel the care put into the story and the characters.
I didn't cried, I don't know if that factor affect anything, but the anime is just amazing. The prologue just hits right in. It gave me that nostalgic feeling that every nostalgia that gave you happiness is now but a past you wished you could go back. It made me remember every moment playing together with my friends, but now, we have gone on our separate ways and even when we meet, the games I would like to play wouldn't be the games they wanted to play. We got developed as we gone on our own journey, but it seems our journey together ends there.

i agree. i much preferred the stories of the episodic characters (specifically episode 10 of course) rather than violet's story herself. but in frieren, im much more interested in the main cast rather than the episodic characters, probably because usually in these episodic scenes, they all tie back to frieren's old crew.
Frieren is Just a lot nicer through
As a manga reader the anime got me crying just from the love Madhouse poured into creating this anime adaptation. They did everything perfectly.
And surely by the best piece of foreshadowing yet to come, you are referring to the potion that only dissolves clothes...
loved the animation from ep 2 where she gently touches the flower. looks so elegant and lovely as if she wants to touch Himmel.
I started recently and I love it so much
I keep taking screenshots at the pretty landscapes and the funny faces
My favorite moment in this anime is where we the viewers see a quick montage of Frieren's ventures with Himmel and friends in flashes while the music in the background was building (the fight against Qual, Aura, the journey North and ending with the party standing before the shadow of the Demon King's Castle) it was so... nostalgic? Which is weird as this show lets us experience the similar feeling of nostalgia in spite of it not being our journey.
I love how you can see her making an effort to not repeat mistakes but at times she needs reminders. It makes her incredible sympathetic.

Mine is one called Chennette. You should taste it sometime because in my opinion it tastes REALLY nice especially when it's cold.

One of the things that I enjoyed, especially in the manga, is that they took advantage of a "generic" fantasy setting with a Demon Lord. This allowed Frieren to really focus on telling the story of the characters, and also allows small towns to be characters of their own too.
Simple story, complex characters
As a massive JRPG fan and adventure fantasy fan, all tje call backs to classic franchises are awesome, and they are done in a way that isn't too wink wink and jells well with the tone and story.
Even the side characters or mention characters are too damn good.
@@yuri611the future seeing hero was also a gigachad
@@kaelthunderhoof5619 he's my favorite side character along with the legendary beer maker elf.
There is also something about the naming convention beeing all german words.
Frieren means to freeze/shiver,
Himmel means sky but also heaven,
Eisen is iron,
Heiter means cheerful with a serene undertone,
Fern means distance and can be used for a sence of the unknown and
Stark means strong. Even Ende means the end as you could guess.
What about Serie? What does her name mean?
@@hieioni3354 Serie is actually the same as series, refering to one thing following after another.
@@ThatRandomRacoon So "Serie" is not a German word?
@@hieioni3354 It's one of those words adopted from another language long ago
@@ThatRandomRacoon I see. I guess they name her that to indicate that she's different altogether from everyone else.
Excellent breakdown of the first 4 episodes. This one is definately special and the landscapes are breathtaking.
I was already expecting the anime to be good, but literally everything surpassed my expectations.
I haven't seen an anime/manga this tearjerkingly beautiful in a while. It really puts a lot of things in perspective.
Can't wait for your adaptation analysis videos for this
Also, The last meteor fading away, and Himmel passing away together!
this made me cry in the first 15 minutes of the episode, That was when I knew, I am in love with the series. it's so majestically sad not because it's a sad story, but because it's beautiful and special.
amazing video. You convinced me to watch this.
Everything you have said is true. This is truly a brilliant piece of work. I love the manga and I think I love the anime just as much.
That would be so sad :( I’d want that so bad! There’s Deedlit into the Wonder Labyrinth which is a cool game, but I’d love another anime
@@Bones12x2 Yeah, I would love to see more shows like Record of Lodoss War again.
I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking of Lodoss War! I wonder if it was inspired.
@@Bones12x2 Am I the only one who feels the Lodoss anime is pretty shallow ? It's pretty but I feel like like 7 episodes nothing really happens, Frieren is just miles better.
The octopath traveler ii background songs surprised me! Great vid!
This show has been excellent so far, so glad I found out about it!
Just watched this all yesterday. It's so beautiful. Feels like Scrapped Princess which is one of my favourite anime of all time. Love it! ❤
Love Scrapped Princess - need more anime like that in my life.
All this to say, Evan Call understands the assignment, and earns himself an A++
the battle scene OST in ep 8,9,10 hits as hard as "Never Coming Back"
I think we know why. Magic was a path to realization or an opportunity to meet her friends and experience the small things in life
I REALLY LOVED your Hyouka stuff and somehow I forget about this channel.
When Frieren got the sour grapes spell she also got one to remove rust from bronze for Himmel's statues
12:30 it feels like places you can go to. each got a detail to remember. Not just background set pieces like the Flintstones with repetition
Nah I only listen to a few TH-cam channel speak about anime or movie that catch my attention and this guy is one of them you've earn yourself a new subscriber
Love how the video came out my dude! We are in for 6 months of Frieren goodness!
Thumbnail GOD
This will always be my favorite anime genre, I'm glad we are still getting anime like mushi shi, violet evergarden, kino's journey and spice and wolf or even the beginning of to your eternity. Traveling and maturing anime will always make me enjoy the small things in life
I would call it a perfect opening to a story. It sets its world, characters, tone and themes so well!
I deeply enjoy your analysis of great stories.
Also that ED is beyond amazing
I can only agree with how happy I am about the first episodes of this show. Thanks for this video. :)
I think this is the first vid I've watched from you but I'm amazed by how your analysis in Frieren compared to all the other anime videos I"ve seen about it!! I'm a fan - keep it up!!
this is the first review i've watched about "Frieren," and it truly is a stunning piece of work. i'm finding it difficult to put into words just how impressed I am while watching it. good job
The gag with Mimic is so funny. I'm glad they got the rights to use that monster
Lmao the mimic is even popular in the manga character poll
Mimics are not copyrighted. They're listed in the OGL.
Yup me to 46 years old now sessou no frieren journey's the end can open my heart, fall in love with this anime
always brightens my day to see your videos. I'm glad to get another rec from you, sometimes it feels like it's getting harder to find good shows. I think this time i'm going to start with the manga, you just jogged my memory - I meant to read this.
Finished MT and now it's taking a hiatus I thought I'd give this a go to pass the time. Didn't think I'd enjoy it just as much.
Man the Octopath II music in the background is genuinely perfect, fits the vibe so well.
This video was very well done. You should do a follow up for rest of the season.
Holy crap so that's why the music is so reminiscent of Violet Evergarden! Props to Evan Call for making banger and emotionally invoking soundtracks.
Having just finished the manga vol10 I can only say that it gets better every volume
I cried during the first 15 minutes, dude. I had barely even known these characters, like who does that?? It just hit me different. It felt personal.
Good choice of Octopath Traveler music in the background :)
When I watch Frieren and its painted backgrounds, Grimgar comes to my mind.
Yess. Frieren is the kind of fantasy I've been missing in the modern age. It's so full of wonder.
Frieren is the only manga and anime that show how different elven view of time and death, since in this world ,they're immortal. Just like Tolkien's elves. This is best anime of the year. Period.
>I find a great anime>I watch all that has released>I get impatient>I read all that has been released>I get impatient>I start watching dozens of video essays about it
Such an incredible anime. Made me emotional! And fantastic video , man!
Hey wow I can finally watch this, show is good! Glad to have it enhanced thru directorial analysis! Out of everything, the backgrounds are by far the most impressive part of the show, they don't cheat on any of them, they're all full paintings in their own rights.
Enjoyed your analysis, have subbed
I love how melancholic it feels.
This is the first vid I saw of your channel, I agree on all pointers
Subbed.
Anime of the Year honestly
It's beautiful and heart wrenching at the same time.
Gods the background is wonderful in this anime.
I just saw episode 6. forget anime of season, this will most likely end up anime of the year, the storytelling depths and layering is just on another level
Me an replay value were made for eachother. We both love Hyouka and Frieren at the funeral
