- The Vizhinjam International Seaport, situated in Kerala, marks a significant development as the premier transshipment hub in the Indian subcontinent. Scheduled for the arrival of its inaugural container vessel on October 15th, this multi-purpose seaport is strategically positioned along the Indian coastline in Kerala. Designed primarily for container transshipment, alongside handling multi-purpose and break bulk cargo, its construction commenced in December 2015 under a landlord model with a public-private partnership, with the government of Kerala spearheading the project and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone as the private partner.

Vizhinjam Port was firstly identified by Anizham Thirunal Marthandavarama, King of Thiruvithamcore (Travancore ) during early 18th centuries. At present this port become the mother port of India / Barath.

It is not just the lack of adequate depth that caused the Kochi DP port to fail as a container transshipment hub, it is also the fact that the Kochi DP port is a large distance from the main shipping lane around India, and Very Large Container Carriers will not deviate far from the main shipping lanes, as this will delay their schedule.
Kochi should convert to a general and bulk cargo port, and a spoke container port, and use a rail link to connect to Vizhinjam port for containers, and develop the land available around the port for industrial estates to make use of these revised facilities and available land.

For full potential, Vizhinjam need a shipping channel between India and Srilanka
Vizhinjam transshipment sea port has received 31 cranes from 7 vessels since 2023 to may 2024.
