Literally everything from the cast iron skillet, onions, browning the flour enough, to the ingredients was spot on. This on FACT is the proper way to make delicious brown gravy. This like the deep south style you can't get many places. Love the tips.
Thx U sister! So simple & traditional. You ought to see these other TH-cam videos of these people out here w/ “old-school” gravy title videos. And they kind of not. Just because u didn’t cook it out of a package, doesn’t mean it’s “old-school”.
I can't tell you how many videos I have watched today on making brown gravy and yours is the easiest the simplest and straight to it thank you thank you thank you
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO this is how my mama makes gravy and every video I see on TH-cam done make it like this and this is what I grow up on thank u so much again
This cook KNOWS how to make gravy. People don't let it get BROWN. All these other videos out there ain't doing it. You'll end up with no flavor. Follow this method, but use bacon grease.
As a fyi if you plan on making this with a meat of any sort, you can cook what ever meat you want and use the oil from it to add a bit more flavor to the gravy, a really great video though❤
Why not use the chicken grease that the chicken was fried in pour half of it out. Keep some of it and some of the Little bits that fall to the bottom from the chicken
You helped me so much I was starting out with water which made it clumpy af I absolutely hated it. So I looked it up and this popped up. Thank you so much you saved dinner
I learned how to make gravy from my mom...you know mamaa😂 take that fried pork chop out then add flour......never knew just to stir till it get darker ❤❤❤😊😊😊
I just saw someone add fresh coffee to make coffee brown and I herd it makes it taste really good. What ya think. Old old south. ❤yours looks great like my mom's onion gravey
I got my gravy right but I was having some trouble trying to get my gravy to taste like gravy and not oil and flour. Lol this gravy slick beat me up. 🤣🤣 I got burned stirring that gravy I'm exhausted.
Im learning , is water exchangabile for chicken stock ? And and can i make chicken stock by friying the chicken first in the pot and then removing it then onions , flour, seasoning? Never made gravy before and im leaening to cook as i go cause i never got around to it as a kid
It's basically what we in Ga. Call bulldog gravy poor folk food. My mom would used the grease from what ever meat she cooked and then throw it on top of it. Good eatin but unhealthy asf 🤣 🤣 🤣
I think it's funny how black people maintain the onion in the recipe while most modern people don't use it anymore but American brown gravy always had an onion since the 1700s, maybe it goes to show how black culture holds onto old traditions more than other groups in america.
@@CodyStark too little/much water, and I guess not enough flower… about how long do you leave the heat on before you turn it down and cover it? I thought it’s whenever it’s begins to brown
Im making sone steaks tonight with some rossted potstoes and green beans but i wanted to make this gravy i have used beef bouillion and a but of teriyaki sauce t9 the broth casue i was almoat out of the beef flavor and im gonna use butter instead of pil for better flavor lol see how it goes
Thank you so much for simplifying this. So many videos on here Take 5 or 10 minutes to get to the point. I love how straightforward you do things!
Great video! For folks that were not aware, the darker you cook out the flour, the less thickening properties it has.
When I was in grade school this type brown gravy was served all the time. I haven't seen it made since then. Thanks for showing me how
Thank you… you have the most simple video EVER‼️ and plus you don’t do all that talking

That’s sounds better
How much butter? And can you use broth instead of water
yes you can use broth. most people do @@terrybanks8355
@@terrybanks8355Yes broth is preferred but if times get hard or you are in a pinch - use water. 😂
@orvydude4197 Good substitute, not better. There is nothing better than raw ingredients. Onion "powder" is not the real deal.
Thank you! I can only make gravy after frying food because it’s gives the correct color but after watching this I can make gravy for anything.
Ma'am thank you so much for sharing this! I really appreciate it! ❤
This how my momma taught me gud job looks great!!!

Where I’m from that’s called roux.
I got my gravy right but I was having some trouble trying to get my gravy to taste like gravy and not oil and flour. Lol this gravy slick beat me up. 🤣🤣 I got burned stirring that gravy I'm exhausted.
I season my batch of flour before adding it to the oil. I also try to use saved oil that was used to cook because it flavored too.
I would recommend using a chicken or beef stock instead of water.
Im learning , is water exchangabile for chicken stock ? And and can i make chicken stock by friying the chicken first in the pot and then removing it then onions , flour, seasoning? Never made gravy before and im leaening to cook as i go cause i never got around to it as a kid
Straight out of Brooklyn NY. This is how I learned. Family from Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina made it like this! YUM
It's basically what we in Ga. Call bulldog gravy poor folk food. My mom would used the grease from what ever meat she cooked and then throw it on top of it. Good eatin but unhealthy asf 🤣 🤣 🤣
Does the flour make the gravy thicker?
I just did this! Great ! Thnskyout
can i have measurements pls
Cast Iron! I love it!
Love the cast iron pan. 👍
Excellent 🙏🏽
I think its also good to use left over oil of the food that u cooked for more flavour like chicken or smth else
Thank u
What spices/seasonings would you recommend?
What seasonings did YOU use? 👀 LoL idk what to use other than salt and pepper..
What about if you aren’t using meat? So you just use more seasoning?
I never could make gravy that was good but That was delicious. I Did make a mess.

I just add molasses to mine to how dark or light l want my gravy and then add my onions and seasonings. Put the lid on, stir and simmer.
YES!
Goat recipe
I tried and it still taste like flour and it’s brown
Substitute the water with broth or stock if you have it.
I always make my brown gravy with the drippings from whatever meat im cooking.
Is milk ever used instead of water?
I think it's funny how black people maintain the onion in the recipe while most modern people don't use it anymore but American brown gravy always had an onion since the 1700s, maybe it goes to show how black culture holds onto old traditions more than other groups in america.
You brown the flour then add the water, the flavor is more real and original
What time is dinner?
So u mean to tell me that the delicious gravy I come to know and love is made of 80% oil?!
I try using wit the grease left over from frying the pork chops
How did it turn out?
@@CodyStark turned out okay, I gotta work on the consistency, I am retrying today that’s why I’m back at the video lol
@@MakeItHappen223 What do you think you're lacking at?
@@CodyStark too little/much water, and I guess not enough flower… about how long do you leave the heat on before you turn it down and cover it? I thought it’s whenever it’s begins to brown
Also taste, tasted more like flour then gravy. I need it like my mama used to cook it lol. I need more seasoning for sure
How much water do you use ?
Just add slowly till its at a tick kind of texture
