I saw this band do their very first big gig in London. They only had the one album, their first. They did the whole album and got a standing ovation. The look of surprise on their faces was classic. They did two of the album tracks as an encore as they didn't have anything else. I have their first 3 albums. Yes they were tremendous.
Dawn!! Nice to see you 🤗 Wow, you got to be in their musical presence, and at the very beginning. So cool! Very glad they got that audience response. It must have been so rewarding and motivating for them. Thanks so much for stopping by and being first here today! 🥇
@@retroreactions.... I know I say that a lot "Oh I saw this band" but from 80-84 my boyfriend owned a record shop so... we got merch, tickets, album art etc. Plus we all loved live music and lived in or around London. It was so easy back then. I miss the 80/90s. Nearly all the venues for music no longer even exist.
For many years before his passing, I would periodically search the Internet for anything to hint at new music from Mark or, aghast, a Talk Talk reunion. I've never wanted to see anyone live as much as Mark and Talk Talk. I had a couple opportunities to see them when I was very young (82 & 83) but at the time didn't fully appreciate them and may not have even known they were on tour. I'm still so sad for Mark's passing. I connect with Talk Talk like no other music.
GREAT reaction Brandon!! Talk Talk has a deep well of incredible tracks! Double Platinum for Living is perfectly appropriate! Future considerations: Life's What You Make It, Such A Shame, Talk Talk...all are essential listening! Such a wonderful group & sound! RIP Mark Hollis!
Another World always gives me goosebumps...the guitar! What a treat🎉As well as Mark's vocals. The Winwood keyboards were the surprise for me, didn't know it was he😂Renee 1st time hearing...very emotive, the Bells💥
Btw. Renee is an extremely useful track as well. The band led by the sadly missed Mark Hollis were truly amazing and took 80s synth pop to whole new levels. Just so amazing.
Fantastic Band and Voice of Mark Hollis, so captivating and unsurpassable really. Loved the music since Summer of 82 and recently rediscovered the albums. Living in another World is one of my fave songs by them. I love singing their songs on Karaoke and try to mimic Marks Ethereal tones, very tricky but i admire the talent and miss the man. ❤
Hi Caleb! Glad you love this band and these songs, especially "Living". Yes, their songs are a dream for anyone to sing, I get it. RIP Mark, your excellent music will live on forever... Thanks for stopping by!
Love Mark, a genius (so sad he's gone this soon). Love Talk Talk. One of the most underrated band from the 80-90s. Love those songs, masterpieces. Mark Feltham who played harmonica also played on Steven Wilson solo album To he Bone, hugely recommended to you.
I've LOVED Talk Talk since the beginning... I heard that gorgeous voice and immediately bought the vinyl. If you find the Live performances from 1986 in Montreux you can see Paul Webb on bass and Lee Harris on the drums. They are a TREAT to watch and so talented!
I've just rewatched this first impression video again. I needed to experience again your opinion and impressions on these songs by Talk Talk. They are my favourite of them.
Brandon. What a birthday treat for me to wake up to this track. It is my top three of all time. This is 80s perfection and Mark’s passing was such a shame to quote another of his tracks. Your best ever video! Well done and thank you. Should have had a treble platinum award just for this. All the best. Dave✅✅
So glad you're featuring Talk Talk! The many layers of the first song (what an emotional roller coaster! 💖), the lyrical depth of the second + the impeccable production of both (no doubt Alan Parsons would approve 🙂) : I love everything about these two songs. Add to this Mark Hollis' distinct, emotive vocals and there you have it: some of the best music that came out of the 80s. Hope you'll be featuring more from that wonderful band! 🐝
Hello! Yes, they blew me away today! You know your excellent music 😊 Yes, they are definitely on permanent rotation for the life of the channel. Have a wonderful night 🤗
So glad to see you delving into Talk Talk. I also think that you would find "Life's What You Make It" enjoyable and prescriptive. The studio version is a must. You can always try live later. My favorite version is the "Fluke Remix" - but that's another story for another time. Or perhaps another world.
Yes Yes Yes Brandon! Talk Talk are my favourite, less than completely famous/well-known and perhaps the most underappreciated band ever... mark Hollis RIP has a voice and accent like no other, it's like a voice from outer space... maybe heaven?. There is no other band that sounds like them in their composition or use of instruments. "Living in another world" is like an Epic of many chapters like no other and Renee is the underrated standout on "It's My Life" together with "Tomorrow Started".. Just amazing, thank you for reviewing 🙂
Who knows, one day... very far away in the future, Sir Brandon decides to react to this sequence, STEVE HACKETT - 1998 THE TOKYO TAPES, "Horizons" (Genesis) + "Walking Away from Rainbows" (Hackett) + "Heat of the Moment" (Asia) accoustic version sang by John Wetton. Quadruple platinum record award for me for this sequence.
I know a few songs from Talk Talk, but both of today’s songs were new to me. I enjoyed both of them a lot,but DAMN….”Living in Another World” was my favorite…Steve Winwood’s distinctive keyboards and that harmonica!! Amazing!! 😊
Awesome! Win win.... I know them mostly from the cool vibes of "It's My Life" and "Talk Talk", but these were on another level. Now I want to find more from them like this! Greatness pretty much guaranteed the next 2 days!
Somehow I hated this band when they appeared in the '80s, now I absolutely love them, and I think they were one of the most underrated experimental bands of their time. RIP the amazing Mark Hollis
I can identify. I think self-titled hit, "Talk Talk" messed it up for me. Still have a problem with that one. But everything that followed was on a different level. Have loved them and the late, great Mark Hollis since then.
Unique voice of Mark Hollis, I discovered Talk talk in the late apart of "it's my life" and also "such a shame" I still like everything in this band, Renée were my favorite here (great fretless bass work before the nice keyboards enter) then later, the further (last) albums are going much more experimental and surprising in a great freedom choices. See "Spirit of Eden" and "Laughing stocks"
Thank you Brandon for taking me fourty years back, I knew these songs but I completely forgot about them, until today that is! I especially like the delicate Hispanic touch on Renée. From the 90 you might enjoy some Prefab Sprout, especially the two (I think) albums produced by Thomas Dolby. Just a thought 😁 Cheers from Paris !
Talk Talk touched me emotionally at first. Then I got musically enthusiastic. After that, I was fascinated by the production and the many guest musicians, until I could only take my hat off to the genius.
I didn't know Steve Winwood worked with Talk Talk...go figure. Living In Another World has a bit of 1970s sound (Mr Winwood and the harmonica-pleasnant surprise)mixed with the 1980s production/percussion...works well. Renee--get a whiff of Peter Gabriel mixed with The Police--That will do nicely Talk Talk has me wishing I'd given them a shot back in the day...
Yea, that really shocked me too! Yes, a bit of a strange brew that makes an excellent final soup! Can't wait to discover more great ones like these 2, I know they exist.. Thanks!
I also discovered that Steve Winwood were featured in the harmonica solo here, so fun! Be sure you also listen to Steve Winwood solo carrer, it's also released from the 80's and is certainly worth it, very nice keyboards on "Arc of the diver" "Talking back to the night" and "Back to the high life" are excellent albums to discover.
Love!! I love how haunting "Renee" sounds. 💙💙🎵🎶🎶And how he says my name over and over in the chorus.🤣🤣Wow I didn't know this song existed. I know the song "Walk Away Renee". 🥰 I can see you really liking this band Brandon. Seems like your jam. 😀
I was actually having a drink from my water bottle when you were saying "Stay hydrated"! 😄👍 And how nice that you'd chosen to listen to some Talk Talk today! 😊 You also did well by going for the _album_ version of 'Living In Another World'! 😉👍 'The Colour Of Spring' is my favourite one of their albums, as it's a perfect cross of the two previous ones and the two that followed it 🙂 By the way, I didn't actually hear a trumpet in 'Renée' and was pretty sure that solo was played on a fretless bass!? 🤔😅 I'll check now which other Talk Talk songs you'd already listened to! 😉👍
I cannot believe it that no channel has played the great video of talk talks first chart single release, today. Today is my favourite single of theirs the video is on talk talk you tube released i 1982. Scott Bournemouth UK.
Nice songs! The sound of his voice and style of singing at the beginning of both songs makes me think of the singer from Shearwater. Folks who like Talk Talk might give the Shearwater album titled Rook a listen? I really love it, but it came out in 2008 so you'll have to listen on your own! 😁 For today's recommendation (because I heard Brandon is running out of songs to play? 🤣) . . .these are not related to Talk Talk at all but while eating dinner tonight I was watching my DVD of Carly Simon performing live at Grand Central Station, and while a lot of Carly's music isn't something I'd go out of my way to listen to, two of her songs absolutely move me emotionally EVERY time I hear them: "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" from her self titled 1971 debut album (hits home hard and always brings tears), and "Touched by the Sun" from her 1994 album Letters Never Sent (I always relate to this one with hope and elation as a musician who desires success). These two would be an awesome Retro Reaction episode in my biased opinion! ;-)
Thanks for the sugg! Any top song from Shearwater that you'd recommend? Thank you kindly sir, I only have songs lined up till Monday, then I'm all out of ideas 🤣🤣🤣 I like the few I know by Carly, so just put your recs on the list! If it makes you cry, well then......😭 LOL...
@@retroreactions.... 😆 From the Shearwater album Rook I'd suggest "On The Death Of The Waters", "Home Life", "I Was A Cloud", and "The Snow Leopard". The whole album is really great and definitely grew on me quickly. It has moody, mysterious, poetic lyrics that are intimately and passionately sung with lots of acoustic piano, often with a standard rock/indie band (guitars, bass, drums, keyboards) with occasional orchestral and other instruments. Great mixing and engineering too IMHO.
Nice one Brandon. Beautiful stuff. In 'Another World' it seemed to be setting up for Duran Duran's chorus in 'Ordinary World'? Obviously never did but I felt that both tracks needed a big 'switch-up' or chorus to make them 'great.'... Just a bit 'monochrome' in style?
Some of the most beautiful music ever made imho. Have you heard Life's What You Make It? More wonder.... try a live one, they were amazing. Montreux is mindblowing
Great songs you were choosing here. Renée always was my fav Talk Talk song. Such a Shame is another great one. If you want to experience their experimental minimal post-art-rock side you should listen to Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock albums, but they are not that easy to access to the casual listener.
Both utterly captivating journeys of huge emotion and surprising instrumentation. Why have I ignored this band all my life?? Thanks for watching! 🥰
Listen to them in the dark, truly awesome
Talk Talk is one of the most under rated bands of the 80's. I love them so much.
The Colour of Spring was the best progressive album of 1986, and the end of an era, as the music was changing as it always does.
Curious to hear how they evolved on the '88 and '91 albums. Thanks so much for tuning in James!
@@retroreactions.... If you can manage it, listen to "Spirit of Eden" in one or two takes- the whole thing at once, or side one & side two.
