  • Coming up, the story of a brilliant reclusive artist who didn’t want any attention…. He just wanted to make music. Mark Hollis played the game for a while and was miserable doing it. For 10 years, he was the leader of Talk Talk, a band that quietly mesmerized & influenced a generation. In 1984, he wrote a signature song of self-determination and independence called It’s My Life that became the group’s only hit in the U.S. Then a few years later he walked away from music to be a dad never to return…. Even when his song was remade by the multiplatinum band No Doubt and became a massive hit across the world he was nowhere to be found…not even for an interview. join me for the heartwarming spotlight on an artist driven by artistic purity, integrity, and parental responsibility…. something you hardly ever hear in rock and roll NEXT on Professor of Rock.

Hey music junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. If you remember begging your parents for a dime or a quarter to play an arcade game or play song from the jukebox you’ll dig this channel of deep musical nostalgia. Make sure to, subscribe below right now. I know that you are going to dig this channel if you love music.
Let’s go back to 1984….You’re sitting in a private room…all by yourself… endlessly turning the radio dial to find a song that inspires you, when all of a sudden….You hear a mysterious, ethereal voice, that makes you abruptly halt your incessant searching… Slowly…the melancholy beauty of the song’s introspection triggers your mind to question out loud….what is this incredible piece of music with an intrepid, energizing chorus? That beautiful, enchanting song was “It’s My Life” by Mark Hollis & the band Talk Talk.
Mark David Hollis, the gentle, introverted leader of Talk Talk who walked away from music because he hated playing the fame game… He refused to lip sync and just wanted to be a father and a husband. Let's dig into this tortured genius…. Mark gave his elder brother, Ed Hollis, full credit for providing the spark that got him interested in music while growing up in Hackney, London. Ed wore many hats in the music business. He was a radio Disc Jockey, a publisher, and a manager. One of the acts that Ed managed was a pub rock band named Eddie and the Hot Rods that scored a #9 hit in the UK in ‘77 with their single “Do Anything You Want to Do.” Mark looked up to Ed. Not only was he Mark’s big brother, he was his mentor- exposing him to a variety of legendary rock & jazz artists, such as Chi Coltrane, Miles Davis, Otis Redding, and Steve Winwood, whom Mark would later have the privilege of collaborating with.
Mark completed the obligatory GED, but he became disillusioned with school and dropped out of college, complaining the University had a “complete lack of rules.” He landed a part-time job at an industrial laboratory and returned to college in ’75 at the University of Sussex in ’75, studying Child Psychology, but that didn’t work out either. He quit college life for good in ’76 to pursue what he loved the most music. Mark referred to this part of his life as a “succession of horrible jobs.” He did what he had to do to make a living, but, at the end of each day, he couldn’t wait to

It’s a very similar story to Raul Malo, the founder and lead singer of the group the Mavericks. They were an up-and-coming band, starting to hit the charts, and I believe in the mid 90’s halfway into a tour, he just upped and called it quits. His marriage a little rocky, and tired of being away from his family , he bought a nice work van and all the good tools and essentially became a high-end plumber, so he could spend time with his family and kids. After sometime of this, he said he was underneath the house one morning, crawling around on his stomach in freezing weather and he saw some band’s tour bus going down the highway and he soon got the hankering to return to music. He talked it over with his wife and she gave him her blessing, he called up his former bandmates, and they got back together. Surprisingly, the Mavericks made it even more big on their second go around, becoming huge, which you don’t see happen too often.

    That song.
It haunted me for years as a kid.
I barely believed I had heard it.
I never knew the band, back then if the DJ didn't say the song or band it remained a mystery.
I'm slowly trying to build up a collection of nostalgia songs - at 54 I am simply finding my mind gets more and more weird about the past.
Songs I loved and songs I hated, as long as they are old now I'll listen to either.
(Though the ones I love more often.)
Because I have enough ancestors that barely got out of their 50s to convince me that I might indeed be especially mortal.

People often compare Talk Talk to other synth bands from the same period, but if you pay attention you notice that their music is often considerably more complex. There are key and tempo changes, and arrangement and production touches you just don't find on a lot of similar music of the time. You could tell that the guys weren't simply good musicians but were also serious music listeners, and to the real "music heads" of the time they definitely stood out.

This is a classic from my early middle school years. No Doubt did a cover, but it's just not the same. They stayed true to the original, but the vocals in the chorus of the original are more haunting & take me back to 5th grade. One of those time machine songs for sure!!!

“It’s My Life” has always been one of my fave ‘80s songs, perfect tune for my teen years. Beautiful voice, ethereal melancholy sound, also loved the exotic, far away video. “Life’s What You Make It” is another fave w/a similar theme, obvs, but the latter resonates even more so with me now at 50+. Never knew much about the real meaning of the lyrics or Mark Hollis himself, but nice that he really did live his own life and chose his family. Sorry to hear of his passing, but his prescient music lives on.

Mark Hollis, the first music death that made me shed tears when i heard it on the news. Talk Talk is a band of the ages, from the new romantic The Party's Over which gives off the duran duran sound, the great it's my life album to the organic and lush Colour of Spring and further on the iconic Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock.
Their catalogue is a great evolution of a band's sound who not can only appeal to all admirers of music no matter which era of the band is your favourite, it's a phenomenal band which I still adore to this day and love collecting their records.
The live footage of this band in their final live tour is their best of their touring years, a lavish percussion section which featured David Rhodes on guitar who made that live lineup so wonderful.
Paul Webb's side project O'Rang is a great continuation of the post rock sound of talk talk

Thanks for this video. Talk Talk is very underrated. I hate that I never saw them. And sadly, Mark died in 2019.
This group was so musically inclined. They make a lot of great sounds! Very unpredictable and original songs.
“Living In Another World” is a great song! And there is a live video of a concert from 1984 and that version of Such a Shame” is really good!
There was a girl in Donetsk, Ukraine I used to own pal, be friends with online, and talked on the phone with. This was back in 2012-2014. I used to send her songs, lots of songs. Then the political situation took place in Maidan Square in Kyiv and the overthrow of the president and administration. And the fighting and war broke out where she lived. She loved the rock ballads. There were two songs I sent her at that time that really stood out to her, Soul Asylum “Runaway Train,” in which she said it felt like it described her situation there. And, Talk Talk “I Believe In You.” I wasn’t sure if she’d like or understand the Talk Talk as it was different than most of what I was sending and she was enjoying. She said she listened to this song with her headphones in at night. It relaxed her. And she listened to it over and over again each night.
I could only sit here in USA and imagine what she was hearing as bombs and rockets were making impacts there. She heard this everyday. I since became a resident of Ukraine and found out for myself what this sounds like: and just recently visited Ukraine and heard and felt the impacts of these rockets and blasts again. There is no way to describe it other than comparing it to the bass boom from a rock concert but times 1000. And knowing that one of those could land on your apartment while you are asleep. I can only imagine how peaceful this song must have sounded and felt for her.
Great video! Thanks for paying tribute to Talk Talk and Mark Hollis. Truly an underrated work of musical art.
