    Just to answer your question about why the worms don't dive under the sand when being ridden: the Maker Hooks are the tool preventing that. The worms of Dune have very sensitive mucous membranes underneath their hard, almost stone-like exterior plating. These plates overlap. When the plate are pulled apart by the Maker Hooks, those sensitive mucous membranes are exposed to the abrasive, harsh sand, discouraging the Worm from diving beneath to sand, to avoid discomfort. Itchy Worms = Desert Uber for the Fremen 🙏

    In teh books Paul tells Chani that he will have to have a political marriage to Irulan but that it is in name only. He loves only Chani and Irulan will never bear children. The movie goes a different way where it looks like it will be an issue between Paul and Chani. Regardless though I am down.
    Unbeknownst to Jessica, she is the daughter of Baron Harkonnen, so Paul is the offspring of Atreides AND Harknonen which always the plan of the Bene Gesserit, except they wanted a female child. The Baron is just Paul's Grandfather not his father. The conflict he is dealing with is that he has the blood of his sworn enemy in his veins but also that he see it was all engineered to be that way by the Bene Gesserit.
    I think it is very important to understand the nature of Paul's vision before and after he takes the water of life. Before there was an uncertainty but after, Paul has true sight, he knows that there is only a single path that can lead to salvation if he is strong enough to take them down it, but the cost in general, but to him personally will be high. He had two choices, don't take the water of life and everything he cares about die, or take it and lose fewer people you care about. His vision isn't a trick it is absolute after the water of life is taken. He can't be tricked, because his vision is absolute, he the Kwisatz Haderach the Reverend Mother wanted but without the influence of the BG.
    It reminds me of the choice Louise made in the The Arrival once she understand the alien language. It isn't as black and white as Paul chose to the villain, it is he has to be the villain now for a possibility of a better outcome later.

      "He has to be the villain for the possibility of a better outcome later" is also what every fascist leader would say to justify himself. And Paul is indeed selfish as we learn when he clearly states that he wants to use the Fremen to get to the Emperor for revenge.
      Also the mindset of becoming Harkonnen to survive the Harkonnen is opportunistic.
      I LOVE how the Film in accordance to that depicts Paul as a mirror image of Fehyd Rautha: They are ruthless killers, that's why Fehyd respects him. And when Paul walks towards the Baron on the stairs in profile it is the same shot and the same gait as Fehyd in the Arena. When the Fremen shoot and later burn the Harkonnen those are the same pictures as from before when the Harkonnen killed the Atreides.
      Also let's consider how Paul insults the Baron before he kills him like an animal. Or how he impatiently shouts and stomps at the emperor to kiss his ring - just like Fehyd made Raban kiss his feet.
      ...they are all the same, Paul is not the more decent person.
      I think any moral statement about the characters remains vague and can be reinterpreted in different ways and that's something that gives fodder for thought and makes the story great.
      Layers within layers 🙂
      Cheers.

      @@j.m.w.5064 I won't argue that Paul isn't fascist, because it's there. But to say that Paul and Feyd are the same is simplistic. Paul kills for necessity (or, if you're more cynical, for an objective), Feyd kills for pleasure. Paul is not a sociopath, he wrestles with the morality of his choices. That's a pretty big difference.

      @@j.m.w.5064 He was not even villain if outcome later is better. He is simply just normal leader that wants to save humanity. That is not Fascism. Paul is not selfish, as he is dedicated with hard work. And Fremen were not used, since they became imperial army. Paul is the most decent person, that is the main reason why even Count Fenring refused to kill him after fight with Feyd, even though he was the only one who could. Golden Path was what is Paul's and his son's Leto 2nd plan to do. Great Houses invaded Arrakkis due to Paul being strict and controlled the spice. He commited genocide accross the Galaxy, but again it was necessary, since nobody listened the truth. Golden Path, since main threats were House IX and Bene Tleilaxu Ghoulas. It's so sad to think that in the pursuit of a "paradise on Arakkis" for the Fremen, they might end up having so much of their current culture destroyed! So much of Fremen culture revolves around the great sand worms and yet if the water they yearn for becomes a reality, then there will be no more Shai-Hulud.
      No more teeth for sacred daggers, no more spice for their cultural practices, no more worm riding or calling to them for aid, no more use for sand walking.
      Entire ways of being and connection will fade and disappear.
      It hits especially hard due to the real life parallels of what colonization does: it flattens, assimilates, and erases cultures, whether intended or not.

Also they can slowly weaken him by sticking with those barbs. Bullfighting is a thing in the Dune universe- Leto's father was a bullfighter, there were bulls on his tomb and Leto brought the bull head to put in his hall when they went to Arrakis. They show it on the wall when Leto died.

    12:30 And this , i think, is one of the main reasons I find Villeneuve's Dune adaptation to be more effective at presenting Herbert's message with Dune, the warnings of charistmatic leaders, and all of that, than even the original novel was.
    The book is glorious sci-fi, but These two movies really bring home the terrifying implications, and consequences of the fabricated-messiah concept. The dissent among the fremen, and expecially the perspective Villeneuve's Chani brings us, works amazingly well to shine a light on Paul's actions and motivations.
    Also at 27:55 where you talk about feeling like we've lost Jessica, how she's someone else, and it's quite sad. That's exactly how i felt with Paul the first time i saw this, after he drinks the cool-aid. Even the cinematography pulls us away from Paul from that point onwards. We no longer share those intimate moments with him, instead we sort of watch from afare, much like Chani. It's a really effective and quite upsetting switch, very powerful moment in the movie. Makes you sort of miss the old Paul, the super likeable relatable Paul.
    Cannot wait for how things are going to play out in the third installment. We can safely expect it won't just be a 1 for 1 retelling of Dune:Messiah, as so many threads and plots have been given a twist in these two movies so far.
    Again, thanks for being willing to pause and give your thoughts, rather than rush or talk-over the movie. Makes for a great watch and listen.

    • @SenatePalpatinetroller

      Herbert message is hypocritical since he himself was in the same we ll. Third installment will mess things up completely. After what they did to Chani, it will be worst of the worst, unless consumers would not bootlick. And what Paul did was justifiable for saving the mankind from extinction. In the Books Jessica remained the same, movie changed Chani and Jessica. Real book readers know how awful this movie is, unless they are willing to sell themselves.

    • @Musabre
      @Musabre 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SenatePalpatinetroller You have such poor grasp of the source material if those are your true feelings. You are completely missing the point of scrutinising Paul's forsight for the flawed narrative that it is. Noone is able to corroborate Paul's claims of the 'only way', outside of himself. THIS is the point of Herbert's warning and the theme of the DUne books. I'm sorry that you seem to have missed that and somehow bought into Paul's messiah complex, it's pretty funny to see if i'm honest though.
      I don't take anyone seriously who presumes to be able to call one group 'real book readers' like that is somehow a call to authority though. We are all equally capable of absorbing the messages of a given piece of fiction, the difference here is i have Herbert's own publicaly known intentions and words backing up my perspective on it, while it seems you do not.

    I always love your insights. In the case of Dune (1 & 2), I wanted to point something out that most casual enjoyers and many fans alike are unaware:
    Frank Herbert was HEAVILY influenced by the real life story and memoires of Thomas Edward Lawrence, aka "Lawrence of Arabia". I will assume you're somewhat familiar with the life of Lawrence, and see the parallels now they I've mentioned it.
    Herbert's early drafts of "Dune" were based on the life of T. E. Lawrence.

    "What did they do to Jessica, man?"
    Jessica of Part 2 is very much an extreme distillation of the character and nearly everything is left out except how she uses the Bene Gesserit prophecy to keep herself and her children safe.
    Book Jessica is way less crazy, and while she does stir the fanaticism of the Fremen as a reverand mother and mother of the mahdi she's so much more. Removing the time skip means that everything she has to do is crunched into a few months and she basically becomes a mouthpiece for Alia because both characters' plots are all but removed.

    • @Musabre
      @Musabre 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not removed, adapted. Im not sure what the insistance is on describing things as being left-out. It's an adaptation, you can't cram a Dune novel sized script into a movie (Lynch tried, it doesn't work). Nothing is missing from Villeneuve's Dune 2 because the elements it focuses on are given the full limelight and treatment they need to be effective.
      So in THIS telling of Dune, Jessica is indeed this slightly mad-sounding mouthpiece for unborn Alia, and that's awesome for what this version is doing with these characters.

    As others have commented Chani in the books is a ride or die. I think Chani's change is to telegraph to the audience that what Paul is doing isn't a good thing, which is sad but unfortunately some people still need everything spelled out for them. When Dune came out many people saw Paul as a hero, going against what Frank Herbert was trying to convey and so much so that Herbert wrote Dune: Messiah to cement the fact that Paul is most definitely not a hero. Oh and your Anakin remark is pretty spot on. George Lucas based Anakin's rise and fall on Paul's character.

      Paul is not a hero but he's not a villain either. It's not black or white. Saying Paul is definitely not a hero implies you've misunderstood it just as much as the people saying he is. I don't want to spoil it for people who haven't read the books but he has to make touch choices for the greater good of humanity, even if those choices lead to bad things happening in the short term.

      @@FrankFreezy_ She also let that test happen to Paul. He could have died there if he would have failed. She let Gaius Helen Mohiam into the castle and lured Paul to her.
      Leto never knew of this.
      And in part 2 she follows the Missionaria Protectiva, the galaxy wide plan of the Bene Gesserit to plant this myth of the Messiah into all cultures and civilisations.
      That is why Jessica knows their ancient "trigger words" in part 1 where she gets the gift of the dagger.
      But they use this plan of the BGs against them and to their own advantage. The prophecy may be a "lie", but Paul is the Quisatz Haderach, he is the Lissan Al Gaib, he can see the future, he can change the reality (more in the books, in the movie its more subtextual) and he guides the Fremen into freedom.
      I see a lot of ppl seeing the movie as "anti-religious" and I can see those points made in the movie, but they completely ignore the spiritual aspects of the story.
      Frank Herbert saw the dangers of religion, but he also saw the potential of the human mind and soul. The books have even more mind altering substances and super human abilities.
      I am already rambling on for too long. Jessica has a darker side to her, but she also loves her son so much and also does this darker deeds only to benefit him.
      We will see what the third movie will tell, all I can say that all of her actions are reflected on in the future.

    I don't know, I get the other changes to Chanis character compared to the books, but her being so frustrated at the end let her look a bit short sighted and petty. In the books she never questioned Pauls love and he only had her as his actual wife, the rest was just for the books and politics.

    Pauls story is just beginning. He didnt ascend to emporer, he ascended to god and brought the wrath and destruction he had foreseen. Billions die in his name, brwaking down the political power system that had been in Place for 10,000 years. He still cant see it through to the end, leaving it to his children to see it through, to make all the sacrifices find the golden path, to navigate humanity through the eye of the needle avoiding extinction.

    Having read the books, it's hard to tell how well the movie explains some things. Here's some lore you seem to have missed.
    The Bene Geserit reverend mothers have the memories of all their female ancestors. That's what happened to Jessica when she drinks the blue water. That she is pregnant also awakens this memory and brings consciousness to her fetal child. So yes, Jessica is changed because her personality is now those of her and the reverend mothers before her.
    The Bene Geserit have had a thousand year breeding program to make the Kwesats Hadderact (sp?). The KH is meant to be able to have the memory of all their ancestors, not just the women. Paul ( who was supposed to be a girl ) was meant to become the KH, and when he drinks the water he does become it. The sauce gives prescient visions, and with KH memory, Paul is able to see the future clearly.
    Prescience in Dune is more like being able to calculate every possibility and see the result. With enough brain power and background knowledge, you can play out different futures kind of like Dr Strange and pick the path you want.
    The prophecy of Lisan al Gaib is fake. It is a story the Bene Feserit planted hundreds of years ago, and Paul and Jessica take advantage of it. It allows Paul to gain control of the Empire. But the fanaticism around the religion releases a Jihad. Paul knows this because he can see the future. It's why he is reluctant to do it, but he must because the Jihad is still better than alternatives he can see.
    *edit Try the Audiobooks - much better than reading it for me :)

    • @SenatePalpatinetroller
      @SenatePalpatinetroller 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And as for prescience in Dune with your take is also based on half truths, because both Paul and Doctor Strange are not able to CHOSE the futures they want. They can predict them, but those futures stay spontanious, they come with either luck or no luck. Only Paul's son Leto 2nd could 100% create future he wanted with abolishing other ''possibilities''.
      As for audio books, they are still the same books, but you just don't need to use your eye and you can rest it by listening instead of reading. But book remains the same. And Galactic Jihad was necessary evil for the Golden Path that Paul was embracing. Killing billions to save TRILLIONS. To save humanity from extinction and mostly from house IX and Bene Tleilaxu.
      Also not all Bene Geserit are ''reverend mothers'', students just like Jessica was in part 1 were simply being called Lady. Reverend mother is only 1 among Bene Geserit or any other rebelled Bene Geserit clans such as Fremen. Lady Gessica was formally rebelled Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother. In order to become a reverend mother, you must perform the ritual as she did and successfully became one. Prior to that, she was just simply being Lady Jessica. Not Reverend mother.

    First time I read Dune I understood what the author was trying to say about how easy people want to follow charismatic leaders. Many black people and some white people whose reaction videos I've watched understood Paul is from Royalty. He is from wealth and is part of the empire. He is the outsider, the charismatic leader. He is a colonizer. They understood how organized religion has been used to control people of color. Chani wass the real moral compass of the movie. She stayed true to her people and believed their leader should be one of their own. Frank Herbert, the author, wanted Paul to be a likable character. That is what the director wanted us to see. But he also want us to figure out for ourselves that Paul is not a hero. The story is a warning..
    but as the line in the movie says: I believe because I choose to believe. Many people want to be lead, even if it's by an outsider. The movie is nothing like star wars or Anakin. Which is why critics have called Dune science fiction for adults. Some people get it while some want a good vs evil story. Dune make you think and ask questions. With Star Wars, everything is spelled out for you.

    • @SenatePalpatinetroller
      @SenatePalpatinetroller 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In reality this is good vs evil story. I agree that it's not comparable with star wars, but without Paul humanity would be extinct. Chani was middle finger in the movie to original books, so was Jessica. He is also not colonizer, since he transformed Fremen into imperial army and provided them his home planet infinite water resources. People who are using Frank Herbert's ''charismatic'' quotes are actual people that have no common sense. Since Frank due to that decided to create new books for the sake of protest against people who worshipped Paul, because his message was very poorly spread and now in 2024, his message is most irrelevant of all. His son Brian in the other hand is even bigger hypocrite than his father.

    Great vid as always ; very interesting to watch someone that haven't read the books trying to link it all together. Chani was so much different in the books but for once, thats a change that makes sense when translating this story to movie and into these current times. The "dont blindly follow charismatc leaders" needed to be said out loud cause the Dune story has already been too much misunderstood...
    The power of the Bene Geserit is unmatched. They even purposely use their tricks as little as they can, cause they need the trust of everyone, they need to be accepted everywhere all the time to be able to bend humanity's destiny to their grand design. For that, being feared is good, but inspiring terror would be counter productive.
    The movie oversimplifies a lot of aspects and just erases other very important factions but Villeneuve's choices really make sense and his version of Dune becomes a art piece that can stand on its own, and a worthy one.

      I think the idea is that we should be justifiably afraid of what a figure like Paul can do (is doing/will do....). His actions on the surface may seem like a noble revenge story against an evil oppressive enemy, but as an audience (and brilliantly spotlighted by Chani through the movie) we should see what he's doing for what it is, USING the fremen and the manufactured prophecy as a means to his own selfish ends. Though we can't help but sympathise with him in some way even by the end with all that's happened, as we've been with him for 2 movies. It's like watching someone you care about fall down a dark path that they yet think is right, with no way to stop them.
      (Remember in Dune 1, as Chani says "who will our next opressors be?" and it almost immediately cutting to the sleeping Paul. It's symbolic of what eventually comes to pass, the fremen is his fanatical attack dog now, and they are all but blind to it from religious zeal.)

    • @SenatePalpatinetroller

      @@Musabre That idea is incorrect. It was only so called ''correct'' when Narcissist Frank Herbert mentioned it, then he decided for the sake of protest make another new books just for the sake of ''change audience's opinions'', since he was charismatic ''douche'' that wanted to be center of morality. Fact is that his story about Paul and his Son Leto 2nd contradict his statements. Paul was actually a hero, his son despite his father's dispute Leto 2nd was also hero, even biggest. Despite being tyrannical dictator, he maintained prosperous peace in the galacy. Chani in the movie was middle finger to the entire Dune and just projecting to the audience to both books and agenda of liberalism. From even part 1 changing gender and race swap to her father (mother in the movie) Liet Kynes, Chani's separation is downfall of the future of Part 3 and part 3 will be anything, but Dune. Denis already is digging himself and dune movie fans more with him. People who justify this movie and those changes are both equally blind and equally pathetic. Main key to golden path is to ensure stability of Humanity, something that Paul had to do to accomplish, despite vile and cruel ways. Chani in the books was loyal to him till the very end just like any normal comon sense (not woman) but human being should be.

      You need to take a breath, sit back, and realise that an adaptation is just that, an adaptation. It won't and should not, be a one for one copy of a novel in screen form. THat would be boring (and doesnt work, Lynch tried and failed).
