  • Can the mysterious chest be opened?
Banjo Kazooie is back in Super Smash Bros Ultimate! With the recent release of this dynamic duo, I thought it was time to turn back the clock and cover one of the most bizarre Nintendo 64 mysteries from the game that started it all. Deep within Mad Monster Mansion lays a slew of things that taunted us as kids. A sealed off fireplace... A treasure chest that wouldn't open... Were these stop n swap assets? Let's trek back through these haunted halls and take a look at one of Banjo Kazooie's spookiest levels.

A combination of interviews and detective work done by fans has revealed what a lot of the oddities in Banjo Kazooie were for. So first of all, as many know, this all stems from the dropped feature called Stop 'n Swop. Players would be able to find colored eggs with ?s on them and the ice key which would then be used to unlock something in the second game (which they were planning from the start based on Gruntilda's line if you get all 100 Jiggies). The idea was that you would collect them in Banjo Tooie, then transfer them over via cartridge swapping into Banjo Tooie. Now, if you don't know what cartridge swapping is, good job. You shouldn't. It's a terrible idea. It turns out, when you reset the N64, a portion of the information remains in the system. If you switch cartridges fast enough, then you can actually transfer that information over to the other cartridge. This is not an intended feature of the N64, and doing this can cause all sorts of damages. But, apparently, Rare Ware actually got it to work consistently, so when making the game, they operated under the assumption that they'd be allowed to do this. Though, at some point in production, Nintendo got wind of it, and said that they couldn't make the features of the game use this unintended hardware glitch.
I'm unclear on why Rare left it in the game. It seems to me that Rare just decided to leave it in as a monument to what Nintendo ruined. It wouldn't be the only time Rare did something seemingly out of spite for Nintendo. But, whatever the reason, Stop 'n Swop not actually being a feature of the series meant they DID have to change a lot of the game design. In particular, they had to cut out Black Eye the Pirate. The remnants of Black Eye can be seen all throughout the game.
Based on the evidence, it would seem that Black Eye the Pirate was interested in collecting all the Stop 'n Swop items. Through some data mining, an unfinished beach level was discovered in which Blubber can be found crying about the fact that Black Eye the Pirate is making him search for the Ice Key, but he doesn't know where it is. Furthermore, you can actually find Black Eye in Banjo Tooie getting drunk in the back room of Jolly Roger's Bar. He rants about how a bear and bird "stole his glory". A reference to the fact that his part was cut out in Banjo Kazooie. In that room, you also see a painting of Shark Food Island form Banjo Kazooie which is where one of the Stop 'n Swop eggs is held. The island is in its raised position which it has to be in order to collect the egg. There's also a couple of treasure chests of a similar design featured in this video. I believe there may also be a picture of the mysterious door in Gobi's Valley being open where you can find another one of the Stop 'n Swop eggs.
In Rusty Bucket Bay, you can find a treasure map on the wall of one of the interior rooms of the ship. The treasure map shows Treasure Trove Cove, and has an X marking where Shark Food Island is. Based on that, I think it's reasonable to assume that the ship was supposed to be Black Eye's ship. In fact, there's another one of the eggs that can be found in the captain's quarter of his ship.
Which leads me to the content of this video. In Mad Monster Mansion's cellar, you can find another one of the Stop 'n Swop eggs. If that's not enough of an indicator of that Mad Monster Mansion probably belonged to Black Eye, then the fact that his portrait is all over the interior walls probably should be. At some point, Mad Monster Mansion seems that it was designed to be the dilapidated home of a pirate. Which would also explain the treasure chest next to his bed.
I forget where people found this information, but among a list of levels scrapped for Banjo Kazooie, one of the names was "Fire-Eye Mountain". Which seems to sound like a reference to Black Eye in some way. It furthermore sounds like what would have originally been the "Lava world" that Gobi refers to in Click Clock Woods. The prevailing theory is that it would have been the fire side of HailFire Peaks. But, the kickball stadium would be replaced with the structure that is now known as Mad Monster Mansion. Based on the size of Black Eye that we see in Banjo Tooie, this also explains the massive furniture in the first floor room of Mad Monster Mansion.
On a mostly irrelevant note, there's a funny line in Nuts 'n Bolts in Banjoland. Banjoland is a museum dedicated to everything about the first two Banjo games. For one quest, Bottles asks you to collect some things that fell out of the "Cut for Time" closet. He then goes on to say, "There was just so much in there that we couldn't get the door all the way shut." Obviously, Rare had to cut a lot of what they wanted to put into Banjo Kazooie. A hefty amount of it seemingly has to do with Black Eye the Pirate. So, what is the treasure chest doing there in Mad Monster Mansion? Seemingly a leftover that was used to indicate that this was the bedroom of a pirate.
Edit: I was just rereading my comment a long time later and I forgot to mention something. As I said, Mad Monster Mansion is pretty evidently originally supposed to be Black-Eye's home, most likely within the scrapped level "Fire-Eye Mountain". This fantastically explains why the hell Mad Monster Mansion's location in Gruntilda's Lair inexplicably has you going through a volcano to get to it. Because, originally, the level WAS supposed to be inside a volcano.

@@eastsideeric2231 "Fire-Eye Mountain" IS a unused level name found in the code. Black-Eye the Pirate IS referred to frequently in unused content and by Rare themselves (and always seems to be connected in some way to the Stop 'n Swop). His appearance IS on the paintings in Mad Monster Mansion.
It's technically speculation that put these facts together into what we believe now. But, it certainly seems like a pretty simple conclusion based on what we know.

Ya as you guys are saying, I think the chest is just another touch referencing banjo's original pirate game. I wouldn't be surprised if that's the same designed chest as what was going in Dream, maybe it was a significant openable chest there. This is especially believable because Ed Bryan (lead Rare designer) carried a whole bunch of already made things in Dream into Banjo-Kazooie, such as the 'Tee-Hee' ghosts' faces having already been made for an enemy in Dream.

Like a secret room under that one, similar to both the large treasure chest leading to Treasure Trove Cove, as well as the chest in Jovani's house that you jump into in Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess. I never thought about that sealed off fire place, but your idea of pumpkin Banjo going into the small chimney where the jinjo is on top actually makes sense. The blocked off fireplace is a real thing in older english homes. As some houses modernised to use central heating they blocked off their fireplaces as they were dirty and time consuming to maintain. However today many people are restoring them as they're seen as desirable features in a room.

I literally never gave this chest a thought. I just knew it had gold feathers hiding behind it. Also I never really noticed the sealed off fireplace either. I knew that room had no jiggies, notes, or Jinjos, so I always avoided it.

Forget locked chests and bricked-up fireplaces, my mind was blown that environmental objects in the game are part of the level model! Not like "the furniture models are locked together with the level models" but like they're literally part of the level's mesh, and aren't separate meshes that were placed into the level!

When you think about it, it really goes to show how much planning and effort went into these stages- it's so easy to make a bunch of assets and plonk them around a stage to fill it out without any real planning or preparation, but this proves that they knew EXACTLY how they wanted the stage to look before even modelling it!

I think I know the purpose of this chest, it’s just decoration to let us know this was actually Blackeye’s room (the “Dream” pirate)

Maybe this is a Victorian house thing that doesn't really exist in America, but a lot of old houses in the UK have those bricked-up fireplaces, or an open fireplace that no-one wants (unless you enjoy dead birds falling into your house every now and then) that you brick up immediately after moving in. I think it was just there to give that 'ramshackle old house' feel.

The answer to this mystery is solved with the answer of a different mystery. The Piece of Chocolate behind bars in Conkers Bad Fur Day, as explained as when some devs did a Let's play of it. It was put there just to mess with people.

In The legend of Zelda or Ocarina of time when playing the chest game I can actually look into the corner of the chest and see inside to see if there is a key or a ruby but there is nothing inside until you open it so it’s back to the lens of truth or just getting lucky.

    Best chests in Banjo Kazooie:
    - Treasure Trove Cove world entry
    - Mad Monster Mansion chest of this vid
    - “Melon Lady’s” chest on the beach when Banjo bests Grunty
    - Grunty’s chest - not her “gold” in Treasure Cove - when she bests him. There are over a million views on a vid of it to attests that’s no. 1.
