    THE SECOND, Larry says"I'm still going to drive it..." I shout "MY MAN!!!"
    My girlfriend walks in to see what's going on... After I explain, she says "THAT is EXACTLY why we love AMMO!"

      The body shop's name is too short. It should be "J&B Body Works...of Art". A company to match Larry's demand of perfection in every detail. The demand for 964's just shot up.

      No, you just enjoy your work and want to excel. Don't let the haters bust your chops, they're just out to give you a hard time. The cream of the crop always rises to the top. This business is big money to people with the right talent, you could go far. Even OCD has its perks in the right field of work.

    • @jamesooten3659
      @jamesooten3659 6 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Kasper Hansen +
      Kasper, well, man, you have to keep your boss pleased. But, you can work on your skills on your own time. Man, I used to paint pieces of old junk sheet metal and useless body parts on my own time with leftover paint that nobody was gonna use anyways, just to hone my skills. I bought my own gun too, so I wouldn't be using the shop's. I still have it after 30 years - a Binks #7 top feeder. Best gun I ever used. And I was never ashamed to learn anything from anybody who knew more than I did, or who worked longer than I had, or to ask the questions I didn't know the answer to. If you're sincere, you're boss will eventually see that hunger burnin' in you to do more, to get the skills you need. Just keep at it, you'll do good.

      OCD is fine if you're doing it on your own dime, or if you're doing it for some vain rich lady who takes pride in having people spend a ridiculous number of hours pleasing her. But there is a real benefit to it. It demonstrates the limits of what's possible, and how to do it, so that more practical, rational people can have a better sense of where to cut corners to get the best cost-benefit ratio for quality work at a reasonable cost.
      -- I was OCD when I began in finish carpentry, but after a few years it seemed too self-indulgent to build monuments to my own skill while expecting others to pay for them. Taking money from someone for something that they don't really want is borderline theft, and can have bad consequences for them. Even in aesthetic terms, making part of an old thing look brand new while the rest of it looks old is self-indulgent. Making it look integrated is more aesthetically pleasing, and other criteria are durability and functionality.
      -- I've done some work that made people's jaw drop, but I made sure beforehand that that's what they wanted, and that they could afford it. Honestly, though, It's more satisfying to hand a bill to a good person of limited means who's pleasantly surprised about getting a well-done job that isn't going to make him or her suffer for a year or so.
      -- The point here is that OCD can be expensive for other people. And there's an ethical aspect to keeping it in check. If you're building a monument to people who gave their lives to save others, OCD has a place, but in that situation, the clients should get at least a pro bono discount.

You put a nice different story about driving cars on each of your products, each story basically gives me chills because they were made out of the deep one of a kind passion that you have for cars. Because of you I am running a successful car detailing business at 17. Thank you for being who you are and showing everybody your passion. 30% skill, 70% working environment. Painting is easy. Prep is easy, especially with a vehicle that is already fairly pristine. Black is the easiest color to paint. Easiest to catch the glare, while clearing. Having a sterile environment is the most important part of the equation. A repaint is the simplest aspect of automotive refinishing. Show me a restoration with no distortion to body panels, and I'll grant some respect.

    I just love watching quality craftsmanship in action! These kind of skills are slowly disappearing as our society and consumerism becomes more and more a 'throw away, replace with new plastic' thing. I have a 2002 MkI Audi TT Quattro that I would love to give this treatment to..... well done, Ammo 😎

      Over the years I've heard the comment about some kinds of skills are disappearing. Especially when it came to the guys working on metal bodies. But now, a couple of decades later there are still people around who still do this work. As with the metal workers, the painters continue to be around. Granted not everyone who paints will have the same knowledge and skills but they around.

    Yup very important to keep the trades going as the masters are dying off! My uncle passed away 19-1/2 yrs ago at 51 from ALS. He owned one of the biggest, cleanest collision repair centers in the U.S.A. I worked there for 15-1/2 yrs as the head technician in the R&R department. Every car came apart & we never ever...! Taped anything off...! If we replaced a fender & needed to go down the side to match the paint. The door came apart handle, mirror, belt molding & window. Taillights & bumper covers! So absolutely no over spray could get on anything. I did wiring harnesses, air bags, A/C, suspension, alignments! What ever needed to be done...really! We did an average of 35-40 cars a week. That's in on Monday & out on Friday...! No matter how severe the collision was! You can eat off the floors & the place is huge! Up front we had 3 lifts, 2 alignment racks, 2 Kansas Jack frame machines, 2 snap-on A/C machines. Brand new Hunter High speed wheel balancer & another wheel & tire machine. We also obviously had welders, torches, spot welders to do factory looking spot welds. State of the art Shark machine. This machine would measure your cars frame/unibody by electrical pulses. So if you needed to pull a car back into shape you could literally get it back to factory spec! We have a Devillbiss down draft paint booth. Which was on the level below the R&R department. Then below the paint department was the body work section. We also had a full parts room were every part...new & old was stored untill it was time to put your vehicle back together. We also have a reconditioning department where the cars went to get washed, buffed & cleaned before the customer got their car back. This room featured a lift & a state of the art water recycling system. So no soap went into the drains. One of the most amazing body shops on planet earth. My cousin still owns it. After Hours Auto Body in Taunton, Massachusetts. Check out the website if you wish....👍❤🏁

    Excellent video. I have literally just watched the first 7 minutes and the last 6 - as you do when flicking through TH-cam - and am so intrigued to watch the complete 4 part series. I fully agree with the last comment re observing and learning about the 'other trades' which seem to get lost or pushed down the social ladder because they don't trade stocks, sit behind a computer desk or give legal advice. It is as noted the 'real engineers' who actually make bring ideas and dreams to life through their devotion to their craft. Hats off to you gentlemen!

    Absolutely awesome workmanship.Glad to see there are people out there that still like to do things right and take pride in their work.I've been painting cars for 46 years.I've used BASF products for about 40 of them.From experience,I've found that going down to 800 grit doesn't allow enough bite,but as you said,to each his own.600 is about it for me,500 is my standard.
    There was one thing that bothered me some about this restoration though.The painters in that booth spraying that isocyanate clear with particulate masks.They should be using positive air supply hoods with full suits and gloves.He's spraying "all that clear" with no eye protection and his neck and head exposed;at least give him some goggles.That Glasurit is a great clear,but it's nasty and those particulate respirators aren't enough.Glasurit is what I went to when they made the old Imron illegal;it's deadly.Respect the products you use,even the silicone in the slag when youre buffing.Should be wearing dust masks protecting yourself from that "residue" getting kicked into the air.Just pay a little more attention to quality when it comes to protecting yourself and your workers...Otherwise,that was an exceptional restoration and worth every penny

    • @jamesooten3659
      @jamesooten3659 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      JOE BLOW +
      Amen. That Imron would absorb right thru any exposed skin and would kill out your liver over time, not counting what it would do to your lungs if you didn't have the right equipment, even in dried form while color sanding and buffing. I'm glad I got out years ago, because I was young and stupid and took risks and cut corners sometimes. Now I look around, and everyone I worked with that was my age and stayed in the biz is already dead and gone of heart or breathing problems. You gotta respect what you're working with or it will get you.

Would love to know what the interior guy used to replace the water-soaked foam padding under the front carpet. It's thick and formed to fit the valleys, ridges, and any buried parts.
