RIP Phyllis Hyman and Hinton Battle. Two incredible performers whose talents will never be forgotten ❤
I didn’t know that he died? I thought that he was still alive Hinton Battle 🤍💛💜❤💚🖤💗💙
Phyllis was just a natural scatter! Such talent!
Yes she was! Such talent! 💛💙💜❤🖤💚🧡🤍🤎💗
At 2:44 Phyllis was channeling her inner Louis Armstrong. Such an amazing performance!
Yes !
Yesssssss 💕
Will forever be my favorite part!!
You said it 😍😍
Simply the Best! Phyllis was so uniquely wonderful vocally. Tall, gorgeous, & gifted! I can see her dilemma now...a lot of men cannot handle that, nor a lot of women. Unique people who are phenomenal are often with a lonely walk.
classanddignity was she
I cannot even explain how great this is.... Phyllis Linda Hyman was absolutely, positively A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. a voice OUT of this world. TRUE PH Fan! I will always love you Phyllis!
This woman was phenomenally talented.
Her voice was like no other. Phyliss Hyman was incredibly underrated.
I HAVE THE WHOLE PLAY ON DVD IT'S OFF THE CHAIN, PHYLISS HYMAN IS DYNAMITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes you can i did
I do not believe she took her own life how do they know those notes were her hand writing.
Betty Lewis
THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THAT OUT
@Mickle Mymy Amazon
What people don't realize is that she was an oustanding jazz singer, she did jazz first then branched out to the other genres. Her range and vocal promiscuity was phenomenal. No one (female) at the time could compare to her. No female (of this time) can compare to her either. She was music. May she forever RIP.
1-17 the runs in head voice, so incredible lol, I love her voice because it had limitless ability. Most people think she is a deep voice singer, but Phyllis had octaves, and she can sing in whistle register too lol, she can do exactly what she wants.
this woman is one of the best ever!
I'm in awe, I just became a fan of phylis hyman!!! I'm 21 and exposing myself to real talent lol
I smiled during the ENTIRE performance! RIP Phyllis!
This woman is one of the finest vocalists of all time. Just that good. There wasn’t anything she couldn’t do. Beautiful woman, timeless, mammoth voice.
Like Hathaway, her loss was a blow to music.
We love you, forever.
I come to this video sooo much RIP Hinton Battle and Phyllis Hyman this video is where I discovered both 😢😢😢😢😤🙌🏾🎭
Phyllis was the other instrument in the Ellington orchestra that needed no tuning.
@Michael Garel, well put.
Absolutely!
Phyllis has so much magical abilities. She just captivates!
Phyllis did that!!! So beautiful & gifted. Miss you much. R.I.P.
The Undisputed Sophisticated Lady of All Time!! The Late Great Phyllis Hyman!! Continue to RIHP Empress!
She's a genius! Yes, a genius with a great heart and tremendous much love to give. Really hope we'll meet again in the future.
Phyllis Hyman...just simply phenomenal!!!! Hinton Battle...incredibly talented Brother!!! Our best and brightest...Rest in Power (RIP) to both of them!!!!
The sounds that came from that her were unimaginable to anything you've ever heard, almost scary. She went from RB, stage, rap, pop and could have done soulful country (move over Doll, Lionel Richie did it). Her range and vocal styles were unique. Phyllis IS ONE REAL DIVA, the rest are simply wannabees. She surpassed Ella, Dinah, Lena and the rest, setting a standard that is still unattainable. She's in a league of her own. Natural skills and great talent. Too bad she never recognized it.
RIP Hinton Battle. An amazing talent
This performance makes me smile when I'm depressed. It's like a jolt!-kind of happiness, you know?
Absolutely stunning!!! Still as vibrant and fantastic as it was so many years ago. A classic!!!
Wow ! Phyllis is too much. I love her
Awesome Louis Armstrong impression and a great scatster!
RIP to them both. Never forgotten
She was absolutely amazing! Her talent was unmatched.
I remember the first time I saw this...1990...John Marshall High school herein Cleveland...my band teacher showed this to us during Music Appreciation. Been a fan ever since.
Under appreciated. This is what she embodied.
2:44 will ALWAYS stick in my head on the Greatness of Phyllis Hyman!!! Beautiful person, soul and artist sorely missed RIP
2:27 did you see the look on Hinton face.
Kevyn W u ain't never lied. I heard it just once and had to play it back a few times.
Somewhere up there... the Duke is SMILING... Phyllis did it the way HE wrote it! Missing You Lady... You left wayyy too soon.
Phyllis was one in a billion, but no one could make her believe it. Her voice
was in a word, spectacular. She could make any stage her own, and captivate you by her beauty and elegance. It doesn't make sense that such a talent, beauty,
and an irrepressibly sultry instrument like hers, would be silenced so unexpectedly, and so sad.
This women didn't get the recognition she deserved, not by a long fuckin shot!!!!!!!!!!
Phyllis carried it like no other! Those two were like PB&J together! If only Phyllis continued to do Broadway, I think she would've found a great deal of success. But I imagine it would take an even greater toll on her because Broadway is no joke. Either way, she did that! Missing her to this day. R.I.P. my Queen!
It’s not a competition but Hinton could not keep up with Phyllis. I’m not trying to tear him down I’m just emphasizing how amazingly talented she was. And to be able to imitate “Satchmo” a.k.a Louis Armstrong they way that she did was phenomenal. She was spot on. The versatility that she showed in this video really exemplifies the gift and great talent that she was. R.I.P to the great Phyllis Hyman.
She TRULY mastered her craft, this lady was tops, and no one can touch her, she had style, always beautifully dressed, she was one of the classiest out there, and just beautiful inside and out,, i love her
MotownMaster Tina Turner more beautiful and classy lady
Let’s not forget the late trombone legend, Britt Woodman swinging his butt off here!
ooooh she really displays her vocal talent in this scene. i love it!!!
What a fabulous, elegant, sassy, and greatly missed performer !!!
I've seen this dozens and dozens of times. I get a lift from it every time and chills during the Louis Armstrong bit. Hinton was great as well. Phyllis owned each of these songs.
I Miss Her So Much
Me too and she died before I was born😔 I'm so thankful that I can still watch many of her performances from time to time on YT. I hear there's a trove of her other performances stored somewhere, I really hope they see the light.
I got to see her live- she was just fantastic!
if only she loved herself enough to stay here longer. such a beautiful spirit.
She committed suicide !
jeanne Décembre so sad
@@jeannedecembre4514 She couldn't help it. Phyllis suffered from serious Mental Illness that runs in her family. Some of them spent a Lifetime on Medication that helped them and wish Phyllis was on the right meds that would have help her out.
It was not that simple. Phyllis suffered from serious Mental Illness that runs in her family. One of her sisters who happen to be on the right Meds said she wished Phyllis was on the right meds that would've helped.
Goodness. Such talent!
Tbh Phyllis should have won that tony award
the best scat singing i've heard in a long time !!! thanks, guys!
CLASSIC....SHE'S CLASSY, SASSY AND CAN JUST DOWN RIGHT SANG & SCAT!!! LOL! YES, I SAID IT "SHE'S THE SCAT QUEEN"!!! BEAUTIFUL PERFORMANCE - MISS YOU GIRL!

The greatest modern Jazz artists/singers to me are, Ms. Phyllis Hyman🕊, Ms. Natalie Cole🕊, & Ms. Anita Baker🌷💕
They are amazing, & when they scatt, Ms. Ella Fitzgerald would be so proud😉👌🏿
Angel Johnson she was in her mid 40s and she committed suicide.
Miki Howard too
@stewartduane Phyllis was amazing, so talented so gifted such a wonderful voice. It is such a shame that she is gone.
Absolutely in love with Phyliss Hyman. RIP queen. I wish life treated you kinder.
All I can say is WOW!!!
RIP Phyllis Hyman and Hinton Battle
Extraordinary natural music performer. On stage she was a **STAR** and came alive!
It doesn't get any better than that!!! Wow...I miss her.
Thank you Jesus for showing Phyllis Hyman at her absolute best!!
Phyll DID THAT
This performance brings tears to my eyes.
Rip, sir!❤
What a voice MS HYMAN
I wish Phyllis Hyman-and others like her-could have had the chance to find a truly supportive society to live in-one that would fully appreciate her uniqueness and also offer positive alternatives to feeling lonely and misunderstood.
In the early 80's I visited a meditation commune founded by the spiritual mystic Osho. This commune was dedicated to loving life, yourself and others and was truly a breakthrough experience for me. I received a new vision of life that has made it possible for me to begin to trust in myself again-and to feel that life is truly an incredible opportunity to become blissful.
There is no need for sensitive and beautiful people like Phyllis Hyman to lose hope in life and commit suicide. A new approach to living-one that focuses on being happy and loving-instead of jealous and competitive-is the real alternative to suicide.
Masterclass.
omg..i was disturbed when this video was removed..lol, i am glad its back, i even went and bought it..THE WHOLE THING IS GREAT!!!!

Man!! I hope some of today's recording artists are pulling up some of these vids on YT; so that they can see how "it" is supposed to be done...... (lol) She wore me out!!!
Great performances by everyone. Playing trombone like that to Take The "A" Train ain't easy.
Saw this show live when I was a kid, it's SOPHISTICATED LADIES!!
Phyllis and Hinton are both great.
Phyllis is a great performer and singer and Hinton is a great dancer and choreographer; not a singer ( but he filled in what he was paid to do).
Check out her Range!😍😍💥
She was and forever will be one of the greatest, next to Whitney Houston and Ella Fitzgerald. Her vocal range was amazing and she performed effortlessly. She was a beauty in itself. :) She is dearly missed.
