I was/am a huge Phyllis Hyman fan and I was so depressed when she passed away that I couldn’t play her records for a long time. I identified with her mental health struggles since I also have bipolar disorder and suffer from extreme mood swings. That last sentence “she had a lot of love from everyone else except the place it matters most, inside” really hit home. Life is difficult and I admit there have been many times I just wanted to leave this earth because of the deep internal pain I felt and still feel. Every day has become an effort to just go on. I’m trying to to win this battle, but it’s hard, very hard and lonely.

I knew bits and pieces about her life. But I didn't know as much about her life in depth. I knew about her troubles in her romantic life. I didn't know she had a husband for a number of years. I remember hearing that she was lonely which caused her to take her life. My first thought was, "Damn I would've married you in a heartbeat Phyllis Woman of my dreams Hyman!". Her note gave me chills because I understand. I once suffered from manic depression. Depression is one of those things that lingers around waiting to come back after you have overcame it. It’s a constant battle that requires prayer and faith to keep going each day. The spirit of heaviness (depression) and resignation of life go hand in hand. Sadly Hyman like many others lose the battle.

I started speaking to that spirit and using prayer & the word of God.The depression indeed went away, but as you have indicated it lingers around and if you do not constantly speak to it it will grab a hold to you again.

Actually, the man she was dating, who threw her last birthday party in Fort Worth was going to propose the following week. She asked him to go back with her, but he was directing a play and couldn’t go! She had been particularly temperamental that weekend and very pouty and cranky! However she never indicated in anyway that she planned to do herself harm and check out. William Earl Ray, actor/director was devastated at her passing! The truth however is that he could not have saved her! She hated her illness and nobody was going to be able to stop her!

This is so scary! To look at a woman so beautiful, that she reminds you of you. To hear her story, to look in her eyes, to daily go through the same thing that you go through, is very scary! The only thing that's different from her actual story is that I don't do drugs! I cry so much for living in this world alone. Family friends can't fill this empty filling that you fill! Every time she cracked a smile, it was fake! She was literally all over the place trying to fill that void in her life! I'm 45 now, I cut myself off from the world. It's not out there, what I'm looking for, is not out there. And it wasn't out there for her! She's one of my favorite singers. Living all alone, is what brought me to this video. It's scary for me to see so much of me in her, in her eyes, in her smile. She did her best to hide what she was going through. It wasn't easy for her to do, being a Star. That's what saved her the first time. The second time, she pulled my move, locked herself in, came up with a story, then shut the world out. I literally can't stand this feeling living all alone. But, it's not out there.

As cliché as it may sound that is when you turn to God. I know that feeling of loneliness and depression. You have to find the little things. Nature calms me. Plus the belief of one day it will get better. Find things you love to do no matter how small or silly. Talk to the Lord and pray. I promise you, it will get better. Just gotta believe it will. Much love to you and all those that struggle with depression and loneliness.

My Mom played her all the time. That song Living all Alone was one of the most beautiful and saddest songs I have heard in my life and it’s even sadder listening to it now because I think about the failed toxic relationships I was in that ended no matter how hard I tried to love these women and treat them good they just didn’t want what I had to offer. I remember a ex telling me one time I was too nice because I treated her good. Dumbest sh*t I’ve had heard in my lifetime here and the dating scene is even more of a cesspool nowadays until I have accepted that I will die alone and I’m cool with that.

I loved me some Phyllis Hyman. My Aunt Sandy wore "You Know How To Love Me" out when I was a little girl. I was a pre-teen when "Living All Alone" came out and I remember Video Soul always played it. I remember it like yesterday hearing that she died while listening to WCGI at my sister's house. I cried because I always thought she was so beautiful. To pay homage to Phyllis, I got a huge picture of her made for my living room. I always hoped that her energy finally found peace. RIP Queen.

Ushered in by Clive Her sister added to the self demise narrative But I don't trust her I don't think she ever found a worthy companion and Clive I think was like dude from mahogany He's suspected of Janis Joplin Amy winehouse n yes Philly's Nobodies the wiser ohh n Whitney too Bruhhh I wanna know what really happen to Donny? Whitney was a minor .. Whitney was already signed for features outside of Clive Davis… leave Whitney.. The Voice out of it.. they sound nothing alike .. Phyllis had five years before Whitney made her decision to be famous. Maybe you’re turned out.

That's right. The label Natalie Cole was signed with, had tried that same treatment on her. All the label executives want is to squeeze as much money as possible, as often as possible out of the talent. That's when Natalie wanted to record an album paying tribute to her father, Nat King Cole. But the label didn't think that a tribute album would have a number one single along with the number one album. So the execs told Natalie to do one more popular hit (Pink Cadillac) like the Everlasting album that had a top ten single. Natalie talked with her manager about what kind of album she wanted to make. Her manager supported her and said, if the label didn't want to let Natalie make the album she wanted then maybe she could be let out of her contract with the label. The powers that be deemed that Natalie Cole wasn't a money cow. So they said, sure we'll let you out of your contract!
And on June 11, 1991, Natalie Cole released Unforgettable... With Love!
Who could have predicted that a jazz influenced Natalie Cole album to be a monumental smash hit.
"Unforgettable" a virtual duet with her father; Nat King Cole, is just that - Unforgettable. EMI - Manhattan Records was the label that wanted to squeeze another "Pink Cadillac" kind of song out Natalie. And give the credit to Electra Records for seeing the possibilities for Natalie Cole's coming out from the shadow of her father. That's a really difficult task, because Nat King Cole cast a long shadow.

@@djk1mya, Clive Davis 'shelved' Patrice Rushen's album too. Until Patrice had a number one hit single that would help the sales for her album.
In Patrice Rushen's episode of Unsung, she tells the story of Clive Davis putting her album on the selve for two, (three?) years. That type of treatment from her label didn't effect her music career. That's because Patrice Rushen's talent is multi-faceted. She has adapted her skills to be a music director for many event/award TV shows. That's how much Patrice loves to make music. And 'one' Clive Davis ain't gonna stop the show!

There are so many causes, charities and children in need in this world you can give yourself to that could give a person a sense of value and worth. For some ppl, it is the presence of God within that gives them a sense of peace and value. But needing to have a man in order to be happy is living a very limited existence. If you were meant to live alone there wouldn't be reproduction and we wouldn't be here!! I don't get how people have become content with thinking that you were born alone to die alone!! What's the point of having a beating heart if you weren't meant to share it with someone!?? The problem is it's too many hurt people out here who have used their parents and others relationships as a crutch instead of letting go and getting God be the foundation and stop settling. I'm in my 30's and I've never been married and it's not because I'm ugly it's because I won't be in anything that I can't see myself in LONGTERM. My internal happiness is important. My sons are my greatest gift and I learned what love was loving them because they don't care what I look like or what I wear or what I'm shaped like I'm their hero and that's the greatest love ever. They tell me everyday and I tell them!! And when they say they want to be like me I tell them they can't but it makes me feel good and that's motivation for me!!! But that's just me. I guess some people really be miserable out here FRFR!! I been in love with myself!! Shit I don't think it's anybody greater!! But that's just me

You feel all the hope, the pain and rejection, the determination and frustration. She put every emotion she had into this song. So tragic that she not only never got the recognition and success in her career she deserved, but also didn't have the lasting success in her personal life,or a sense of self worth and belief in herself. That was the most tragic thing of all. I hope she is finally at peace.

Phyllis Hyman really had an amazing voice. This is what happens to people that don't compromise. Yes she could have been bigger, but that would have meant compromising not being true to herself. I'm of the belief that we do love ourselves. A person that doesn't love self would be a selfless person which means a person that lives for others. What I believe is that we don't truly think about what's best for us and make very bad choices. We get stuck in dreams and ideals that are actually self destructive. We believe that if that dream doesn't come true that we will be miserable so we don't give up on it in order to do right by ourselves and be truly happy or content. I think the music industry is a destroyer of people. It takes till there is no more then throws people out like trash. It really is no wonder that people become depressed and end up destroying themselves.

    What a beautiful short documentary.
She was beautiful inside and out.
And sang like a bird, just goes too show.
Love yourself and see the beauty within.
Because if you don’t , others can’t replace
    That feeling rip ❤️🌹❤️

That's where people are confused at. Happiness doesn't come from people, good looks, having clothes, houses, cars, careers, a nice body, smart, none of that means anything. Happiness comes from knowing truth. And if she knew true she wouldn't trip off what the world is telling her she should have an order to be happy.... stop letting the world lie to you. Love life however its presented to you. don't look at no one else's life but your own.😇

I have "You know how to love me" on my Cleaning Playlist. She sang that song so beautifully, that it brought tears to my eyes. I heard myself telling Phyllis to sing that song!!!! Being a Cancer July 9th, I could understand her being so vulnerable, emotional and in love.

This just still breaks my heart to this day. I remember the day she passed away when my cousin's wife told us the bad news. It was the exact same way I felt the day I found out my all time favorite singer Marvin Gaye was shot & killed by his evil ass father. Phyllis was a truly beautiful woman & a humongous excellent singer. I miss her very very much. R.I.P. beautiful goddess. God Bless.

I like her other hit song as well " Ease the Pain" was very powerful vocals.
Phyllis H. also did alot of Touring with Luther Vandross. She was one of his Background Singers.

"I'm tired.." it was more than just a man, a man would've kept her from ending things sooner and that's it.. she was simply TIRED and I cannot stress how much this is relatable.. I feel like her soul was finally at peace when she ended her life..
For some of us, being here is the torture, not our experiences or our value or anything else.. just being alive on this planet is a gotdamn drag and it's all you can do to get up every single day and it's even harder to go to bed at night..
The reality is, SOME of us don't want to be here and THAT'S OKAY.. we may not need someone to give us a pep talk, we may not need therapy to adjust our thinking.. sometimes all we need is to know that it's perfectly okay to feel how we feel, that we give ourselves the PERMISSION to feel how we feel.. the guilt at our thoughts is what actually takes us down.. the guilt of feeling these things and feeling all alone and like we can't tell anyone cuz no one will understand.. the guilt of feeling like there's something WRONG with us..
Sorry.. my thoughts, not necessarily anyone else's.. I hate it here

Mal Mack : I truely understand your statement.-.
I wished so bad, society wouldn`t look so negatively on ppl. that commit suicide. It`s mostly not a split second decision.
For some ppl. like Phyllis as well, life became unbearable And this was her way out, her way to peace.
Of course it is so sad to see it happen, but as long as the person commiting the act is convinced to do the onliest acceptable thing to do to ease the pain others have to accept this decision.

@@fredajordan5704 you really DO understand.. you know what's the only thing that keeps me here? The guilt of knowing that my kids and sister would miss me.. but that guilt is also part of what keeps me WANTING to leave.. it's such a strange cycle that I want out of but won't for the sake of others..
      Anyway, thanks for listening 💕

@@Malepical Yes, if a person has family members, the thought about doing something final is more difficult to deal with. cz ppl. like us don`t want to hurt others, especially not family.
I feel exactly like you. Ppl. are so very different, they act and feel so much different about the same things happening to them...This is why no one can judge another without knowning the whole story about this person...But WHO wants to take time in the todays world to wanna get to know another person completely, most contacts are superficial and one is better of with no big circle of "friends"...
Mal, neither one of us made the choice to come into this world, so at least we should feel free to decide when to leave.
Nevertheless, I wish you strength and power to get by,, .. One day at a time, greetings fr. Germany.
