    Audra is a classical opera singer so of course she could do justice to that song. The occasion was in memory to Hinton Battle who just died (Audra knew him personally). And for those who don’t know, he played the first scarecrow/The Wiz on broadway).

    My daughter trained under Mr. Hinton Battle and performed in his production of "Love Lies." She also performed "All that Jazz" for Ms. Chita Rivera that was choreographed by Hinton Battle. I am so thankful that she had that experience. Thank you Jones-Haywood Dance School where they both trained.

    I met Hinton in Los Angeles in the late 90’s both him and his younger brother.
    He was very supportive and gave me his number at the time if I ever needed help with dancing and auditioning.
    Just a beautiful giving person all the way through. RIP Dear Hinton❤

    What this performance makes abundantly clear is that no amount of training can erase the inherent "Blackness" of her spectacular voice. it shines through no matter what she sings. . This performance, which is a perfect mixture of classical singing technique and from the heart, go for broke "sanging", should be listened to and dissected by every Musical Theatre artist of color. Bravo! She is one of the greatest artists this country has ever produced.

    • @TombCat
      @TombCat 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No. She doesn't have the right voice. Patti LuPone was the pinnacle. Liza would have been great once upon a time too. Gaga has the right timbre, fach and resonance to sing the Gypsy score brilliantly - for one night. Rose Havoc is NOT a classical soprano with plummy intonations. Even Audra knows this. Her Billie Holiday was......a choice.

    • @quinnaddison420
      @quinnaddison420 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TombCat she has the voice for it. It’s just not a part of her voice we hear very often. But Audra’s chest voice is still as strong as her Ragtime days.

    For Jennifer: My “thumbs down” is just to ask if it was permitted to record/video this concert ?
    I assume you would respect the rules if not.
    Also - please monitor the comments on the posting of “Home” as there is a very inappropriate message sharing personal/private information as to Hinton Battle’s death. And this person appears to be affiliated with the hospital in some capacity as well as (apparently) being a priest. The announcement of Battle’s death included (in all major news sources) that the FAMILY has no intention of releasing the cause of death. The posting on your TH-cam page by this person is a violation of privacy and deeply troubling.
    Please consider deleting his message and removing him from accessing your posts. Very hurtful and not at all something for page like this.
    Thank you

      Hi Mark! You know I wondered the same thing and checked the digital program and saw no rules about photos/videos. There was no signage or spoken announcement about it either. Thanks for checking! And thanks for letting me know about the comment. I saw it go by but didn't give it much thought since someone with true access to the situation would have respected a confidentiality agreement. So I shrugged it off. But you're right that it's not helpful and I'll go find it and take it down.

      @@JenBiddison Very much appreciate your reply & deleting this unfortunate post about Hinton Battle. I have friends/colleagues who have worked with him and very much agreed that the family was providing NO public information as to illness/cause of death.
      This person is definitely violating policies.
      As far as recording - I assumed you, as an artist, would respect a no video request, had it been posted in auditorium or program.

      Both the show winning best musical and years later Lena Horne singing Believe were recorded. She’s only talking about seeing representation through the show on the Tonys. Regardless, semantics are unnecessary when the meaning of this was to give tribute to great and departed man

      HI Joselito, actually Audra is not singing in an operatic style or tone, that is a different sound. She does sing both head (soprano) and chest voice and does naturally sing with vibrato (which is often mistaken for and "operatic sound"). She sings with a true Broadway Musical sound - a big, clear sound that is suited to stage. She can sing in an operatic style (if you listen to her singing My Man is Gone backed by an orchestra - 1998 performance - you will hear that). thank you for your time

    • @TheMarlonChannel

      And what makes you think you know how this song was meant to be sung? This is Audra.

  • @dmp7252
    @dmp7252 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    She did okay. She was going into operatic voice quite a lot. This song is not easy to sing. Whitney Houston (yes, THE Whitney Houston ... at the age of 15 or 16 ... on the Johnny Carson show ... probably has the best rendition.) While Whitney was a pop singer, she could still out sing most trained Broadway singers. And at the age of 16, when Whitney's voice was as pristine as they come; she could sing most of "Home" with her full chest instead of going into a falsetto. To date, I don't think any other performance of "Home," vocally, has surpassed Whitney's version. Whitney herself couldn't even sing the song in her later years. But Audra is a consummate professional and this was indeed a heartfelt rendition.

    • @TombCat
      @TombCat 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Boy, you got a lot wrong. Whitney sang it when she was 19 years old, on the Merv Griffin Show. She also sang it in 1994 in her concert in South Africa. All Singers have some break between registers, and it's true that Whitney sang a lot in chest voice, but she was just as well known for her beautiful head voice and her trills and operatic phrase endings. Not the same thing as falsetto.
      Kristin Chenoweth sang a gorgeous version of Home on GLEE believe it or not, in a mix of modal and classical voice, as is her style.
      Please watch Stephanie Mills sing Home, at the Apollo. Showstopping. Raw and authentic. She was madly gifted.
      Diana Ross sang it urgently and beautifully in a mixed belting voice in her concert specials too. Late 70s and 81. She sings it faster with surprising power and great emotion. Her special yearning quality and silvery tone really lend themselves to this song. Diana was a better singer at 40 years old than she was at 20. That's how a vocalist is supposed to progress. If you take care of the instrument and challenge yourself. Diana's way with the lyric is gorgeous.
      I don't like Audra's version. She kind of mucked it up. She's quite capable of doing it much better. There, I said it. I love young Whitney's but she was quite uncomfortable. She was reined in by the style of performance. Clive was introducing her to the world. He was determined to make her into the Black Barbra Streisand. Whitney could do all that and more. She would become a much greater vocalist than was seen on Merv Griffin.
      Watch the other one's I've mentioned. Diana Ross is my favorite. She's better than people realize. Chenoweth on GLEE did something formal but very beautiful with this song. Stephanie Mills has delivered the song most authentically for all time. Her voice was a wonder. At the Apollo.
      Also, see JHud sing Believe in Yourself for Quincy Jones. When she takes the time to shape her notes and calibrate her performance - her great BIG Voice thrills and shines. You're welcome.
