I get emotional talking about Phyllis because she was that good. Her voice was rich and velvety but what always strikes me is her intelligence - how she uses, for example, the rasp on the higher notes for expressive effect. She was a great singer but she was also a great musician.
Phyllis Hyman is that rare talent every bit as beautiful physically as her singing is musically. To me, her beauty is unique. As is her gifted talent.
I hate how record labels don't know what to do genuinely talented vocalists like Phyllis Hyman and many others, just because they are multi-faceted. She is a Jazz vocalist AND she can sing R&B. She can sing whatever she wanted, but they wanted her to be in a box. Ugh.
Clive Davis did that with Patrice Rushen too. Thankfully, the music community gave her opportunities to create music.
It's such a shame that Clive Davis did not encourage Phyllis Hyman's "Sophisticated Ladies" success. Imagine, he actually tried to make her think her being nominated for a Tony, would hurt her music career. As I comment on that fact today, I recognize the complete insanity of his behavior!

Her combination of statue (height) and physical beauty would enhance any movie and/or TV show or mini series.

If you get a chance to read Phyllis' autobiography, "Strength Of A Woman," you'll know that she
suffered from mental illness, if fact it was Bipolar Disorder. But addressing it or not, it took over
her life. Nobody pushed to to commit suicide; it was her illness. Her antidepressants as well
antipsychotics made her worse. She wound up taking medicines that are normally prescribed
for schizophrenics. So, standing up for herself, kissing ass to no one, or whatever, she was very
mentally ill. I was so blessed to see her in concert some 15 times 13 years (in and around San
Francisco). There were times (I found out after her death in her book) that she could go on stage
and do a 90-minute concert, sing her butt off, bring the audience to its knees, and then go off to
the backstage dressing rooms, pick up an electric bass guitar, throw it 15 feet across the room, all
because someone ate the last of the frenchfries. Also, whenever she would have a hectic tour,
having to wake up in a different hotel in a different city every other day brought, dread and bouts
of paranoia. What a most beautiful and talented woman she was, but also what a psychologically
tormented soul also.

I'll have to read that. I didn't know the depth of her illness. Same with Donny Hathaway too. Another great performer whom I think suffered from schizophrenia.

I’m a 6ft female contralto voice too. With enough polishing and practice, we can use our upper ranges but yeah it doesn’t come natural to us. What what a pleasure it is to be blessed with one of the most unique voices known to man. Phyllis Hyman was one of those once in a lifetime talents and a very misunderstood soul. May she Rest In Peace

Although I would be grateful for any artistic creation about Phyllis Hyman, I seriously doubt the creative talent in the film industry.
The last movie I really liked was "Ali", directed by Michael Mann. His skill with music on the soundtracks from his movies are really good.

Phyllis Hyman was a phenomenal vocalist very few vocalist today could match the talent Ms.Hymn posessed
I met Miss Hyman back in 1985 when she was in the audience at Yoshi's on Claremont. It was, I think, a Thursday night, which at the time tended to be local jazz and blues bands. I played flugelhorn for a couple of local groups at the time and sang a few songs. We had a 30 minute set and were doing one of my songs when all of a sudden this voice just bloomed from the audience and she stood up and literally took over. I just stepped back, did backing vocals and played. We were all just stunned as she started giving directions to us so a song we usually played at about 7 minutes turned into a 18 minute schooling. When she finally waved us to end the song she just smiled and walked off the stage. That recording from Yoshi's soundboard on reel-to-reel remains one of my most treasured possessions.

The follow-up album, "I Refuse To Be Lonely," which was released posthumously, featured a song titled,
"This Too Shall Pass" - a very haunting song. This song also mirrors much of what she was going through

that was the song that introduced me to her music, it's haunting because I could relate so much to the emotion and pain in her voice.
As a fan yes her songs mirrored her feelings which made her so phenomenal the depth and the soul you can just wanna hug her!! She is/was ICONIC!! Untouchable ya dig!!

Her voice hits me on an emotional level. She and Whitney are on my Mount Rushmore of all time greatest vocalists.
“You Know How to Love Me” is my forever jam. Only the incomparable Miss Phyllis could give a soulful ballad on the one hand, perform a mesmerizing jazz standard, and then a fun uptempo that got the party started. I wish she knew love in her lifetime to feel healed and healthy. Her voice, style, and beauty was just tremendous!
I'll always have "You Know How To Love Me" on my playlist. Phyllis Hyman and Patrice Rushen's "Haven't You Heard" made 1979 one of my favorite years in my life.
💚Contraltos make my life happy💚 No one compares to her, EVER. Her improvisational singing skills (partly taught by the great Jean Carne, apart of the Normon Connors stable with her), whistling in songs and phrasing/clarity is top notch👌😑😑😑

Phyllis was such a beautiful, poised, unique singer. Her tone and elegant delivery is so unique. Discovered her few months ago, and I’ve been hooked ever since. Jazmine Sullivan could play her in a Biopic, they look alike, and have similar tessituras.

Phyllis Hyman was phenomenal woman & powerful singer. Her legacy will never be forgotten. We both share the same birthday🥳 . Mental illness/Mental health is real. I battle with Clinical Depression/Anxiety so I can relate to how she was feeling.

@@Rosannasfriend I wouldn't call it a reupload. Remake is more accurate. This version focuses more on vocal pedagogy and the technique behind her voice, as well as her jazz background. I don't remember this level of detail on the previous version.
This focuses on her vocal style and ability. If you want to know about the real Phyllis, read her book,
"Strength Of A Woman." She was mentally ill; diagnosed as bi-polar and borderline schizophrenic.
I saw her many times in concert, and you'd never ever know it. Where everyone who was close
to her, as well as those who worked very closely with her, WOULD witness it - see it, hear it, and
FEEL it - was backstage. Toward her final days, her mental illness(es) would cause her to take up
abusing alcohol, drugs, and food. But what was messing up her voice was SMOKING. In her more
slender years, she would weight around 160± pounds (remember, she was 6'-1"). And in her book it
is indicated that at one point she reached some 325 pounds (see her in this video @21:52).
It was a privilege to discover Phyllis Hyman during the 70s and 80s while I was living in St. Louis, where jazz is very much appreciated. We had 3 radio stations that played jazz most of the time. I loved her music instantly. I have her 2 disc greatest’s and love still listening to her to this day. What a genius, and misunderstood artist. I miss her. Blessings to you and everyone!
Phyllis had such an amazing voice. I saw her perform in DC the last year before she took her life in 94 at the Carter Barron Amphitheater. Another hidden talent of hers was whispering. She whistled, "Living All Alone" with such amazement that I was floored.

Other than the Unsung episode and one or two interviews from colleagues on youtube, no one else has really done another documentary or mini episode about her. We all want to learn more about her and her history. So again thank you sooooo much for this treat.
Vesta Williams, Angela Bofill, along with Phyllis Hyman are artists that I'm truly interested in and fell in love with their music. Hopefully we can get more information on Vesta's singing style and background and maybe even an Interview with Angela Bofill 🤞🏾🤞🏾 (although I know she has the speaking irregularity from the strokes).

I loved her rendition of Betcha by Golly Wow. I read somewhere that the singer in the stylistics, loved her cover.
Phyllis is incomparable in every way possible no wonder why they called her the sophisticated lady she dressed and looked like the way she Sanged elegant and sophisticated!!!
....she loved to sew....she rocked other designers work...costume designers too....but she loved to SEW.....so you KNOW she was going to be TURNED OUT...her album covers are a serious lesson in SOPHISTICATION....

Phyllis Hyman was one of a kind. A totally distinctive and unique talent that I miss more as time goes by. Her power, and the emotive wallop of her voice, is unparalleled.
Living All Alone is my all time favorite. Sacred Kind of Love and her cover of Betcha By Golly Wow are phenomenal as well. Got to see her at Blues Alley in DC in the early 90's.

Phyllis truly deserved to be a much bigger figure in the black music industry! She truly was a pioneer in the world of soul and jazz music, I bet if she really put in the work towards it she would have been a PHENOMENAL music producer as well, just imagine the marvelous work she could have done producing other artists…
I would kill for you to do an analysis on Donna Summer. Her disco years are beloved but there's relatively little appreciation for her powerful, skillful voice. As she aged her voice just got richer and fuller, despite the loss of much of her upper range. One of the greatest voices of all time.
I remember that summer. One of my best! I was very young but definitely remember hearing the news of her passing on MTV and my dad was devastated-also the same year or few months after Selena passed as well. Years later as an adult, she is one of my top favorite voices 💜💐👑✨ as always, thank you & love love love this channel 🫶🏾✨

I am beyond thankful you created this for our girl PH. You’re right… She never got her flowers 💐 while she was here! She was such a talented artist but so deeply troubled and the industry really did a number on her. She truly was the premier Jazz vocalist of her generation. Period.

Thinking about people expecting her type of voice to sound like a man reminds me of her duet with Jon Lucien. There definitely is a difference. I loved it the first time you covered it and it's great to be reminded again. I'm glad you used her song with Grover Washington Jr because that was a song heavily in rotation with my parents as well as "meet me on the moon".
She has so many great songs.
I'll add, after loving her for years of my childhood and not knowing about her untimely passing, I feel very emotional listening to "I'll be around" by McCoy Tyner and Phyllis. It's a big song anyway, to me very dramatic. It takes you on a journey like most her ballads. But something about her wanting love and be unlucky, emotional lability, her unappreciated talent, and that way she handles the song after the piano bridge has commence... it's haunting. Maybe it's just me that feels that. It's just like trying to listen to Donny Hathaway sing"I love you more than you'll ever know" or "Someday we'll all be free" with his background but I felt something before learning about that. Then I can listen to many songs by them and simply enjoy them and sing along. Maybe I'm just being extra.
I don’t think you’re being extra. You are valid in what you hear because it is their spirit/soul coming out via emotion and singing/music.

She's was brilliant! Clive wanted her to crossover musically. He ended up doing for Whitney Houston what he wanted to do for Phyllis Hyman.

I used to listen to Phyllis when I was going through some things. Her voice spoke to me and you could feel everything she sang.

Phyllis will forever be one of my favorite singers ever! There are so few singers where you can feel their emotion and it touches you like the way her voice did. I'm so glad I get to experience her music. Her life was definitely not in vain, and her music has left a big impact on me.

@@BlackMusicArchive ....have you heard her JAMES BOND theme song that was overlooked for another singer's version....a very sad moment in her career....PHYLLIS was also basically the 1st PLUS SIZED MODEL....she sewed her butt off and during that period in fashion a lot of the haute couturiers made sewing patterns....and she rocked them all ....with a serious fetish for HALSTON....during his ruffle period...she was also one of the 1st people to book the make up artist...REGGIE WELLS...who went on to become award winning and legendary for doing over a hundred cover issues of ESSENCE MAGAZINE....his iconic work with OPRAH for DECADES....and of course IMAN....PATTI....ANITA....WHITNEY....and BEYONCE...among many others...PH...was also known for her HATS....and DEEP PLUNGING NECKLINES.....smile....she was also very popular in the world of DRAG because of her smoky voice....when drag queens would perform her numbers the money would flow...SHE was INCREDIBLE in SOPHISTICATED LADIES....and no her label....with CLIVE DAVIS....did NOT like her doing the musical...maybe a combination of divided focus....or keeping her under his reins...however your video is just EXCELLENT....and yes i did learn somethings.....i have a very special place in my heart for her....the DIVA....that rocks the TORCH SONGS....that the DUKE...would approve of....

Boy how I always loved Mrs Human,I have been so much into music all life, and to tell the truth, I think it saved me a time or two. What I realized about certain female singers with lower voice rang they seem to have more longevity and it seems that there singing gets better. People like Gladys Knight, Anita Baker, Rita Coolidge, oleta Adams, and I believe if she were still living Karen Carpenter, and more. Let me know if anyone agrees with me.

Can I just say THANK YOU for covering this absolute ICON?! it’s so sad that people don’t know who she is and especially that she retired from living before her time was up. First heard her in college and never looked back. It’s really nice to see others putting the respect on her name that she absolutely deserves.

I was a fan since her first Buddha album and loved everything that followed. I saw her perform about a half dozen times, mostly at small Jazz clubs, like the Blue Note in Greenwich Village. Also saw her in Sophisticated Ladies. Love your analogy of her vocal roots and musical style. Her Jazz chops were a throwback to the 50’s, but modern and fresh. But, I always heard shades of the sounds of the Philadelphia R n B male groups from the mid 60’s to early 70’s. She took that sound to a new level that has yet to reached by a female vocalist. No slight to Patti Labelle, because then we would be talking about apples and oranges; there’s no comparison. Thank you for posting this video. You are an amazing historian.

BECAUSE AND IN ADDITION TO "THE STYLE" OF VOCALS AND MUSIC THAT WAS BEING "VOCALIZED" ON AND WITH IS.... DOES IT MATCH OR MESH WITH......THE ARTIST AND THE ARTISTS' VOCAL EXPRESSIONISM? PHYLLIS HYMAN'S STORY STILL "TROUBLES" ME BECAUSE I WAS JUST "THAT IN LOVE WITH HER AND HER STATUESQUE BEAUTY AND VOCAL EXPRESSIONISM". I WASN'T SURE.... ABOUT "WHY" HER EXPRESSIONISM UNTIL 😢. WHILE HER AND HER VOCAL EXPRESSIONISM WERE STELLAR.... SOMETHING WAS OFF. I WAS ENAMORED BY HER BUT WATCHING HER PERFORM.... REALLY TROUBLED ME IN WAYS THAT I WAS TOO YOUNG TO ELABORATE ON. IN CLOSING. I'M ALMOST 60 AND MY PROFESSIONAL AND MINISTERIAL CAREERS ARE LITERALLY "CHOCKED" WITH STORIES LIKE PHYLLIS HYMAN'S AND THE OUTCOMES WEREN'T ALWAYS THE SAME. I'LL STOP HERE......FOR NOW. 🙏 BECAUSE I DIDN'T REALIZE UNTIL JUST NOW THAT "THE DEATH" ☠️ OF PEOPLE THAT I EITHER LOVED OR CARED FOR. OR. THAT LIST OF PEOPLE THAT "I LIVED AND CARED FOR" ARE DIFFERENT STYLES OF PAIN AND GRIEVING.
This is certainly one of my favorite series...BMA has taught me so much about the artists I grew up with that I never knew before. Bravo to you for bringing these revelations to us!

There is a whole music industry today based around old school RNB music. I believe if she had lived Ms. Hyman would be busy performing her old music around the world.

I love, love, love Phyllis Hyman 💕. The way her voice made me feel, I can't even describe it. I would listen to her songs over and over and wish I could sing like her.
