Phyllis Hyman's voice is like no others. She could have ruled the female jazz vocal genre for decades. I really loved her for the gift she shared with us. May she RIP
Hi wendell Batts, So glad to hear your mention of these 2 dance phenomenons! I saw Mr. Battle in "The Wiz," on Broadway. He was amazing. I've never seen Mr. Burge in any program; my loss. You're right! They were a kind of dream-team when they worked together in this show. Thank you for your message! varadero
Hi! Lucky you! Wish I'd seen it; you're really very fortunate. From what I've seen of this show it was truly amazing. Thanks so much for your message! Best, varadero
My first intro to Gregg was in "A Chorus Line" movie. He was such a standout for me, simply captivated by his talent. So wish I could have seen him perform live/met him. BTW I have the ACL movie video and am still thrilled with his dancing/singing/acting every time I watch it. And he and everyone else in this SL musical--fabulous!
What an honor to hear from you! Thanks so much. The talent represented here is almost scary! I'm only saddened by the fact that 2/3 of the act are no longer with us. When one counts Michael Smuin, it's more disturbing. Anyway, I'm so thankful that we still have incredible Mr. Hinton Battle to lift us all up with his amazing talent and choreography! Once more, thank you!
I saw a documentary about her years ago. It was heartbreaking. She suffered from bipolar disorder and depression for years, having been diagnosed in the 1980s. She often self-medicated with alcohol and drugs, and frequently spoke about suicide. On June 30, 1995, six days before her 46th birthday, Hyman died by suicide by overdosing on a mixture of tuinal and vodka in the bedroom of her New York City apartment at 211 West 56th Street. I cried when I read her suicide note which read: "I'm tired. I'm tired. Those of you that I love know who you are. May God bless you."
How can I seriously respond to "the leader" of this genre? Thank you so much my friend! Though I posted a very close second to this many years ago, it was "deleted" and then considered undesirable. Since those 4 years have passed....well, you get my drift. I'm so glad that you enjoyed this clip. It's really very sad since we've lost 2 of the principals over the years. Best is how they'll never be forgotten! Hugs to you, and that Lady of Quality!
Great to hear from you, and Thanks! I'm ashamed to say I never knew that ACL movie even existed! Have you posted, or are there any other clips up here from same? If not, I'll track it down. I'm still sad that 2/3 of the principals in this part of the production have left us. Also, I'm honored that you took the time to write to me. Many thanks, and please keep in touch!
Phyllis can knock’em dead with that incredible voice and runway looks! The whole performance was elite!! RIP Phyllis, Gregg, and now Hinton

And you haven’t seen dancing on Broadway this good since then.
The late great Gregg Burge and Hinton Battle, the best dance team ever to hit broadway.
