As an added, during the intro of the song, you hear some instrumental effects replicating the song of machine gun fire, mortar explosions, and a helicopter flying by. It's soft, like a memory of a battle. During live performances, this is done much louder and to greater effect, as if you're in the middle of battlefield.

If anyone is struggling with PTSD, I highly recommend EMDR therapy. All insurance covers it, and its really effective. It's the worst shit in the world when your going through it but it makes the memories feel more like old wounds than like fresh cuts gushing blood. Not sure how else to describe it but that's what it was like for me. As a bonus, you don't even really got to talk through the shit, the therapist just guides the exercise in silence

Thanks for commenting. I work for the Masons, and a lot of the older guys are Vietnam vets who worked their way through PTSD with charity and the Masonic organization. They just found each other there and flourished.
One guy got shot down over Vietnam--Air Force ace, very deadly in an aircraft--and his dominant arm was so severely damaged that once he got back home, doctors said he'd never use that hand again. He said otherwise. He self-rehabilitated by learning sleight of hand card tricks, and I still can't figure out how he does it.

The song at the end is a song about awaiting the return of loved ones from war. “Keep the home fires burning” basically keep home warm and loving while we await their return… It is a bit of irony at the end of the song, as they contrast the desire of people to see their loved ones back safe from the war, yet they let this man lay in his own personal hell, trapped alone in his own body.

My mother, now in her mid 70's, fell absolutely in love with this song after hearing it. I was 13 when Metallica released their album ...And Justice For All, and I was constantly jammin' it. She was never especially into music as a whole, and most of her favorite songs were from the country genre. One day, after yet another such jam, she inquired about the song that had the slow, beautiful music that got heavier and faster towards the end; I knew right away she was referring to One. So I played the song for her, letting her read the lyrics as she listened. Then I showed her the music video, as I had it recorded on VHS. She was mesmerized, and requested I dub her a copy of the song on cassette. I did so, and it was constantly being listened to (both in her car and her walkman). Several years later she told me that she wanted One to be played after she passes away while her ashes are being scattered. She still loves the song to this day and sometimes reminds me of those wishes 🤘❤

Lars Ulrich really went at it in this one. I love the bass drum sound of this album of hitting an anvil with a ham (there's an image for you). James Hetfield is a far better rhythm guitarist than he is a singer, but here he does a marvelous job. And I can't praise Kirk Hammett highly enough, he's one of the true masters of his art.
I'm a bit torn about this official video, in some parts the clips from "Johnny Got His Gun" add to the the song, in some parts it's an unneeded distraction (the song stands by itself and is just pure gold).

The film clips and voice overs are from the 1971 movie, "Johnny Got His Gun," which was based on a 1939 novel of the same name. The movie was about a WWI veteran that was struck by an artillery shell, losing the ability to see/speak/hear and all limbs. The story told of his efforts to cope with his new condition and let those around him know he was still cognizant. The song is obviously a take on the book as well.

There's another song by Metallica called "For Whom The Bell Tolls" (based on the book by Hemingway) that details 5 soldiers who survive a battle only to be obliterated by an airstrike. While it isn't entirely as direct as One is, the song does an almost equally good job at describing the horrors of war, albeit in this instance from the point of view from the ground.

I remember counting down the days, then hours, until the premiere on MTV. It's funny to think of it in retrospect: before "One" and all the Grammy nominations (and eventual wins--thank goodness Jethro Tull stopped putting out albums 😂), Metallica never got played on any of the commercial radio stations. Within a year of this album's release, the local rock station was doing "Mandatory Metallica" every night at 10pm, mostly playing their older tracks. I didn't care for the Black album when it first came out, but some of the tracks grew on me over the years. Load killed my interest in the band completely, and the only tunes I've heard from them since were ones that came on the radio when I was too lazy to change stations. But I still play the hell out of those first four albums.

I love the way this song does absolute justice not only to the movie Johnny Got A Gun but to the horrors of war.
I think it is very easy to make song kinda… dramatic? theatrical? This in so many ways is understated which is where it’s power lies.
It’s not glorifying war or painting the men as heroes (which I am certainly not saying they’re not) but, as they all too often are, victims
This is one of the most beautiful and powerful songs I’ve ever heard. As someone who was in a coma in 2016, it has gained even more significance, it’s gotten even more powerful and more poignant. I was only in a coma for 12 days and, though I’ve memories of the early stages, the rest was a blank. To be awake throughout the whole thing… a hell I cannot imagine

I usually don't listen to Metallica, but when I due it's from their lineup with Cliff due to his bass actually being audible. When Jason came along after his death as a replacement his bass was intentionally turned down to where you can't even hear it (so imo what's the point of listening you know)?
This is actually the first time I've heard this song all the way through and it's reminds me of the song Rooster by Alice In Chains (the lyrics pertain to guitarist Jerry Cantrell's father's time in 'Nam).
"It was the start of the healing process between my Dad and I from all that damage that Vietnam caused. This was all my perception of his experiences out there. The first time I ever heard him talk about it was when we made the video and he did a 45-minute interview with Mark Pellington and I was amazed he did it. He was totally cool, totally calm, accepted it all and had a good time doing it. It even brought him to the point of tears. It was beautiful. He said it was a weird experience, a sad experience and he hoped that nobody else had to go through it."
"He's heard this song. He's only seen us play once, and I played this song for him when we were in this club opening for Iggy Pop. I'll never forget it. He was standing in the back and he heard all the words and stuff. Of course, I was never in Vietnam and he won't talk about it, but when I wrote this it felt right...like these were things he might have felt or thought. And I remember when we played it he was back by the soundboard and I could see him. He was back there with his big gray Stetson and his cowboy boots - he's a total Oklahoma man - and at the end, he took his hat off and just held it in the air. And he was crying the whole time. This song means a lot to me. A lot."
"That experience in Vietnam changed him [his father] forever, and it certainly had an effect on our family, so I guess it was a defining moment in my life, too. He didn’t walk out on us. We left him. It was an environment that wasn’t good for anyone, so we took off to live with my grandmother in Washington, and that’s where I went to school. I didn’t have a lot of my father around, but I started thinking about him a lot during that period. I certainly had resentments, as any young person does in a situation where a parent isn’t around or a family is split. But on Rooster, I was trying to think about his side of it - what he might have gone through. To be honest, I didn’t really sit down intending to do any of that; it just kinda came out. But that’s the great thing about music - sometimes it can reach deeper than you ever would in a conversation with anybody. It’s more of a forum to dig deeper. It felt like a major achievement for me as a young writer. When I first played it to my father, I asked him if I’d got close to where he might have been emotionally or mentally in that situation. And he told me: ‘You got too close - you hit it on the head'. It meant a lot to him that I wrote it. It brought us closer. It was good for me in the long-run and it was good for him, too"
IDK if you've ever reacted to Rooster or not (you have A LOT of videos🤣).

What a great and insightful reaction. So many do not get the meaning of the song, many don't bother to try. I remember this movie, It was a harsh look at what happened to one man in WW1. It does however speak to the sole rending torment of many who have served there nations regardless of what flag they served beneath. I my self and my daughter both served and we both where injured in combat. To all who serve with honor, no matter what nation or branch of service, Be well, and Be at Peace, Know that in the finely tally your not the one to bare the burden of war, Those who start it are, Your only burden is to those who served against you and as brothers and sisters in arms we all know we cant pick the fight only how we conduct our selves in it. Even though majority of Metallica's music is fast and loud, every song is deep and thoughtful and impactful If you haven't heard it yet you should do Master of Puppet's it's legendary and that album is in the library of Congress I believe the only thrash/ metal album to be in the library of Congress

@@trixiebella Oh 😔. I love Myles so much but he doesn't sing that good in the Amsterdam show. But he sings perfect in the billboard version. Unfortunately the billboard video has been blocked even after getting more than 7 million views. That's probably why Amsterdam performance is the more popular one. And where did you watch them? I sat in the cafeteria and watched this on MTV in the morning, in the afternoon I was bound for Bosnia to jump into enemy territory as recon and painters to prepare a path. It was on my mind as we jumped out of that plane.
It was my worst nightmare until I got home and my wife fell ill and died of cancer, leaving me and two children aged 1 and 2.
Somehow I managed that and we actually did great together, the three of us.
Now that the kids are grown and out the things I never had time to process or consider then is coming back to haunt me. Out of 18 under my command, only I remain.
I'll stick around though, I can't be broken.

I remember growing up listening to Metallica, and I didn't pay attention to lyrics much at the time because I was young. When this video hit, I actually paid attention to the lyrics, and then watched the movie.
I know plenty of guitar players who grew to dislike this song because everybody asked them to play it, but that shows how popular this song was at the time.
With the way most music is engineered these days solely for mass consumption, we need to hang on to the gems that evoke actual emotion.
While I haven't enjoyed Metallica's music much past the black album, this is one of the enduring songs that never fails to evoke emotions from me.

When you ask whether it was a movie or A TV show. It was a movie called Johnny got his gun. It was based on a book of the same title about the first world War.

The book that inspired the song is called Johnny got his gun. It's an antiwar novel written circa ww1. The movie was the same name but that was post ww2.

The worst wound I ever saw was a friend who died. His name is Lcpl Andy Dang. He died 1 week in country. He was hit and his entire lower jaw was blown off, most of his neck, and a large portion of his upper chest. Now, Andy was a darker skinned Marine. When I got to him his skin was ash white. He was dying and he knew it. His platoon Sergeant was a Gunny and I remember watching him pick up Andy's jaw bone from the sand, shake the dusty sand off of it and put it in an MRE sleeve. He put it on the stretcher that carried Andy off. Andy died on flight.
He was the guy who first introduced me to "Family Guy".
