Ann Wilson is hands down one of the greatest rock singers ever.
And it’s not close
The opening guitar piece was Nancy having a showpiece for how talented a player she actually is. Especially in the early days, it was easy to get overshadowed by Ann's powerful voice.
These Dreams is Nancy on lead vocal.
Plus female guitarists were not common at alll.
Nancy almost never plays that opening the same when playing live, even though she always follows the same theme. She teases the audience by starting each line sort of the same, then going off in a completely different but equally beautiful direction. She is _amazing._

Nancy is as good a singer as Ann is. She actually harmonizes above Ann in many songs. She also fronts "These Dreams" and shows off her vocal prowess also.
"I was a willow, last night in my dream, I bent down over a clear runnin' stream, and I sang you a song that I heard from above, and you kept me alive with your sweet flowing love". My favorite verse. Great reaction:-)
What's so amazing is how Nancy's voice accelerates from velvety flow to white hot torrent at the end...I agree...such a powerful verse and classic delivery.

I've heard this song so many times and never paid attention to that line until hearing it in the car tonight. I was like "hmmmm".
Nancy Wilson's guitar is off the charts, Ann and Nancy together are unbeatable.
While Ann basically stole the show with her incredible voice, Nancy had a great voice also and is one of the most underrated guitarists in rock. Her talent is seen in the opening of this song.
Side note….Nancy beat Ann to number one with “These Dreams”, a song Ann said no to.

Saw Heart live for the first time in '88. Nancy stepping to the edge of the stage and ripping out this intro on acoustic guitar inspired me to learn to play guitar. Thirty-three years later, I still haven't mastered this intro. It's seriously complex.
I think Nancy released an album of "standards".
She was pretty good on acoustic guitar. The heavy lifting was Roger Fisher on electric guitar, Michael derose on Drums and Steve Foosen on bass and Howard Lesee on everything else!
Absolutely HAVE to hear their song ALONE. When you guys talk about how effortlessly Ann Wilson hits those high notes, the song ALONE showcases that aspect of her voice BRILLIANTLY!!!

MUST MUST MUST watch/listen to Heart doing Stairway to Heaven. Led Zeppelin being honored at The Kennedy Center. She literally made Robert Plant (lead singer) shed a tear it was so phenomenal.

In the ‘70’s, Heart didn’t bow down to any of the male-dominated bands……In fact, dudes respected and welcomed them. Annie and Nancy, held their own…..they’re awesome rockers!

@@haagenneldeberg6787 dude, even during the guitar solo in the video for "alone" you can clearly see the male guitarist doing the solo, yet the video makes it somewhat look like nancy is the one playing it.. rarely do band members get singled out for doing rhythm guitar while the lead guitar is performing a solo.. so no, this is not against women.. there are loads of great ones out there..
but when it came to heart as a band? just look at how they show the guitar players during the guitar solo..
they were phenomenal though, im not shitting on them.. but i also wont build people up when clearly somebody else had to do the hard work.. but that is not what we are talking about here..

I just saw Ann Wilson in June.. She's still got that insane vocal range at 70yrs old. She sang this song and killed it.

I just wanted to expound on the powerhouse voice Ann Wilson brings to the performances, plus the struggles for her in the years to come. She's had so much backlash over her weight gain that it has hurt her career over and over. That voice of hers has stayed true no matter what her "weight" was !!! And even to this day she pounds those notes out perfectly !!! She deserves the highest praises and everyone who wants to squash her as a person/artist/performer, needs to finally let it go, and just walk away !!! Leave her in peace, she's earned her place as one of the all-time greatest female rock voices in history !! 😘❤️🙋🏻♀️

I saw them in concert back in 1978 and it was like being in the presence of GREATNESS.
They were very under recognized because they were women in the 1970s.
1978 was their best tour ever, imho. And I have been a fan for 47 years.

Ann has such powerful vocals that a lot of people over look just how incredibly amazing Nancy's guitar skills are.
For 45 years Ann's voice will stop me in my tracks, completely captivates me. I love guitars, but when Ann is singing, I just want to hear her. Listen to their Tribute to Led Zepplin, it's awesome.

Linda Ronstadt has a "zero to one hundred" vocal moment on BLUE BAYOU, the authorized live video of the song. It is really quite stunning. Starts off soft, quiet, and then BOOM, that incredible powerful voice she had. Good gracious. WOW. Cannot wait to see their reaction to it and hope the have her on a Female Friday soon with this.

A softer song is These Dreams and its Nancy who sings this one. I love that these sister has stuck together and backed each other up through the good and bad times. Two very strong women when women were "not" rockers.
Dog and Butterfly is a must listen to see just how amazing Annes’ voice is. It shows a different side to Heart.

A great Female Friday cover of Stairway to Heaven is Dolly Parton's version. It's a doozy in my opinion.

I saw a live version here on TH-cam recently was performed in Germany sometime in the seventies (but can't remember the date nor the venue) that was an excellent recording for that era (and better than a lot I've seen since the 2000s started, surprisingly).

My wife and I saw them in concert two years ago in Miami Florida and they were amazing! Nancy showed off her guitar talents and Ann's voice was as strong and beautiful as it was back in the 70's. You can't really appreciate how great Ann's voice is until you hear her live. Two major talents who lost nothing over the years.

Huge Heart fan from the beginning. I used to save my babysitting money to buy their albums on vinyl. Her voice still gives me goosebumps. Best ever!
The beginning acoustic guitar playing is the lead singer's sister. As crafty and gifted vocally Ann Wilson is, her sister Nancy equals that with her guitar playing.
Edit: Song's lyrics were written by Ann and she did while coming down from doing shrooms for the very first time. During her shroom high that night, she started to worry about how the current world could end in a nuclear war at any time. And because she was currently madly in love at the time, she felt each time she's with that love, she will make love to that love of her life as though the world is at its end.
That acoustic intro by Nancy Wilson (lead singer Ann's sister) is one of the top acoustic intros of all time. Would be hard to play by anyone. You should find a video of Nancy playing it live. Each time she does it she plays it slightly differently. I agree on Heart's cover of "Stairway to Heaven" at Kennedy Center. Top performance of all time. Ann knocks it out of the park.

Dreamboat Annie is one of the greatest debut albums ever! My favorite song off of Dreamboat Annie is "How Deep It Goes" and as Ann has introduced it: "another love song from Seattle." More of a ballad, it shows off Ann's more tender vocals. Beautiful.

I love the way this song melds the soft and hard sides of Heart so well. Weaving the two moods in and out while maintaining a smooth flow. This is Heart's masterwork.

I live in the Seattle area. About 20 years ago, I went to a dinner theater show called Teatro Zinzanni. Turns out Ann Wilson was a guest main character performer. She walked right next to me while performing. Her voice was SO powerful, I could feel it in my chest. This album was blasting in my very first apartment.
One thing I think is important to mention on these older bands, is that they were all NEW sounds, people had not heard these styles, voices, guitar stuff, etc. There wasn't internet, and so you can imagine that when one heard something for the first time, it was a HUGE deal, that's why these bands are so BIG.
This makes my heart happy. To see young people discovering the music of my childhood and loving and appreciating it is so beautiful. You guys made me go back in time to when I was a little kid listening to the radio and discovering this phenomenal band all over again. ❤
In fairness, that's kind of a low bar to clear when you consider the garbage that teens & young adults have to choose from today. No musicality whatsoever- just murmured profanity over generic, recycled beats. And then you have the absolutely dreadful music videos they're given that exist solely for the record labels to sell product placement rights to the mega-corporations pushing their latest piece of overpriced crap that's manufactured in China
These sisters were/are TRUE Rockers! Their songs, performances & standing in the biz is legendary! "Alone" is FIRE!
Well, "These Dreams" is quite different from this style, with Nancy instead of Ann handling the lead vocals. "Dog and Butterfly" also gives you a different take on their talent.
The intro acoustic guitar was Nancy killing it.
My first rock album I bought growing up because it was women dominating the rock scene! I was so blown away by her voice…God blessed Ann with this voice!

No Ordinary Love, Cherish the Day, Kiss Of Life (got Amber's sax she like!).. anything by Sade except Smooth Operator, which is one of her biggest hits. Not her best though.

So many great Heart songs -- I've seen them in concert 5 times & they are always fabulous. Check out Magic Man, Barracuda, Magazine, Dog & Butterfly, Love Alive, Alone, & especially Little Queen! And yes, Ann Wilson never missed a note.
Their 'Live in Seattle' videos are spectacular and Alone is one of the best from that show!

Sadly, only seen them once but it was like 10 years ago and they still kicked ass on stage. They were technically opening for Def Leppard but their show was almost as long. Love all their stuff except the one song they also hate(sadly it got them more MTV/VH1 airplay than anything else), "All I Want To Do Is Make Love To You". It just did not seem like a song that fit anything about them. It fit more with a band like Roxette.

I read a story about the Wilson family. Ann and Nancy's father was a high school teacher, in the Seattle, Washington area, after serving in the military. When Heart would record a new album they would send a copy to their father, before the album would be released for sale. Their father would play the entire album during each class and get the reactions / opinions of the songs from his students.
Crazy on you has one of the most epic acoustic guitar intros by Nancy Wilson.
Heart is the most powerful female group ever. Magic Man is my favorite song by them and shows again, how versatile they are.

There are some songs that are just incredible with headphones. Heart in general are good but magic man is the next level. Try something you may not have heard. Men at work " maria" or over kill hope you enjoy remember good headphones.
That was Ann and Nancy, the guitar in the beginning was Nancy as was the softer vocals before Ann took it to the moon, if you listen closely there are several harmonies of them both

I was lucky enough to see Heart twice in concert. The second time, Ann's voice actually made the amplifiers start to crackle and without missing a beat, she immediately reduced the power of her voice and the amps stopped crackling. That happened 3 different times. We were all amazed. Thanks
I actually got to eat lunch with Anne n Nancy. I work as a stage tech and was a very long day for me and then I was sent to my lunch break. Ended up at same table with them. Was an amazing experience for me.

Man... Ann Wilson is great, but I can't help but feel Pat Benatar is the bar for female rock vocalists. It's hard to go wrong with either choice, though.

Everyone talks about what a powerhouse Ann is but her lower range is smooth as silk.. she translates between notes so effortlessly.

This was a time when every young person would be packed into their cars on summer evenings and out cruising the mainstreets and heading to whatever place was a good place to hangout . So much energy , so much fun , a great time to be that age . Those warm summer evenings with everybody cruising around with the windows down and cars full of people singing along to those great tunes. .

They have a solid band, but Anne and Nancy really are the band. It's a lot like The Carpenters, where Karen and Richard steal the spotlight and are always the face of the band.
The studio version is great, but you need to see them do it in a live setting... Just to see Nancy Wilson do her kick at the end of her acoustic opening.

@@skyepuppy7763 I once had a dog named “Skye”. We always called her “ Skye Puppy “…. I still miss her. But, yeah, Heart is a great band. Not a lot of female lead hard rock bands in the mid/ early 70s. Since they began, they never took much time off…they are still active and they still sound great
Ann Wilson is freakin' AMAZING!! I saw Heart in concert, and the test of a great band is how they sound in concert, and Heart was sooo tight! Nancy Wilson is the guitarist at the beginning of the song, and Nancy crushes the guitar!! They are both fabulous!! The whole band ROCKS!!

Had the privilege of seeing them live in concert at the height of their careers in the late 70's and early 80's. I wish they had stayed rockers instead of changing to that soft 80's sound. Still have good memories of their concerts.
it is not just the vocals.. it is also the guitar and drums that come with a hard rock group… so usually a guitarist from a hard rock band is more talented than a regular rock guitarist.. so Heart brings power with them, a phenomenal singer and guitarist, Nancy picks that 6 string guitar as good as anyone on the planet.. they r complete

I totally agree with you. In my opinion Anne Wilson is the only one who has the chops to do Stairway To Heaven complete justice. If you get a chance to see this video, do it.

Led Zeppelin gave Heart their blessing to do their songs live. They had more balls than a lot of other bands.
The Wilson sisters were DEFINITELY powerhouses of Rock. TOTALLY AWESOME!
