Yeah, she was mixing in acoustic parts from multiple songs into the intro here. At least 2 other songs I could recognize, though I don't remember the names.
@@bwcbiz - This video starts already about a third of the way into "Silver Wheels". While Nancy played this in concert for some time, it didn't make it into an album until 2 years after this concert - as the 3rd track in 1980's Bébé le Strange album. Then, it kicks into the part that is on the Dreamboat Annie album, although on the original Mushroom Records vinyl release, this was still tracked as part of the song "Dreamboat Annie (Fantasy Child)". In this video, the "Fantasy Child" interlude starts when the "Crazy On You" title pops up on screen. Now, right at the 4 minute mark on this video, Nancy switches into the opening riff and second riff of "Hijinx", from the Dog and Butterfly album released in '78 - same year of this concert. Then back to the "Fantasy Child" interlude at about 4:45. Then, the real start of "Crazy On You" when Nancy stops, tosses the thumb pick she had been using, and takes a regular pick off the mic stand. In various concerts, she switches up not only the parts she plays, but also where she pulls that regular pick from after always tossing the thumb pick at that change point. In one concert, she pulled the pick from her bra strap just below her shoulder. Another time she pulls it from behind her ear. She's made it part of the show.
The Wilson sisters are forces of nature, and still at it in their 70's. I just saw Ann doing a guest turn with Disturbed...wow. Makes me feel young again, well younger anyway,
Some idiots doing one of those lists about best singers put Taylor Swift and Kelly Clarkson (who is a good singer) ahead of Ann Wilson on their list ,- definitely not music people
Gotta check out "These Dreams" next. Originally presented to Stevie Nicks, she turned it down, and so it was presented to Heart. They sang it in memory of a fan of theirs who had cancer. Nancy Wilson took the lead vocal, and it went to #1 in 1986.
Heart had so many great songs that were in the top 40, Magic Man came out in 1975, Crazy On You came out in '76, Barracuda came out in '77...but it wasn't until 1986 that they would have their first #1 Hit song and it was the song "These Dreams" sang by Nancy, NOT Anne. Many people forget that Nancy has a great voice as well. Now, Yes, Ann has the most dynamic voice between the two, and the following year in 1987 they would have their 2nd and final #1 Hit song, "Alone" with Ann singing. So they had two #1 hit songs and each sister got to sing one of them...I love it. Great Job as always young lady. Love your channel.
Song called “Straight On” is musically and vocally powerful. You’ll enjoy this one for sure. They have so many great songs but this one is another fav of mine.🙏🏼🌹💕
This is amazing! Thanks for choosing this one. I love this analysis and seeing your reaction to this incredible voice. ❤ How about the LIVE performance of ALONE at the Royal Philharmonic in 2016, FORTY-THREE years after Heart was formed and nearly 30 years after the song was released? At the time Ann and Nancy were 66 and 62 years of age. 🤯
@@JenniferGlatzhoferI'd double down on the suggestion for a recent live performance of 'Alone'. I was fortunate to see Ann live with Tripsitter in October and she is still a powerhouse. The more recent performances of 'Alone' have all the power from her youth, while accessing the emotions of the song in a more intimate way.
Ann Wilson's range and use of technique is crazy! She is a mezzo, but she can easily stay in mixed voice up to nearly C6, head voice of E6, and what nearly sounds like Strohbass down to a solid C3. Most versatile female singer I can think of.
I hope you dive more into Heart, no one has a voice like Ann Wilson. They have so many great songs "alone", "what about love", "if looks could kill" are just some of their work ❤
Jennifer! Caught up! And I double checked, I'm subscribed. 😁 Oh, Heart! Delving back into my era! Hmm, 1977 ... I was 17. And I definitely know this song. Ian would love those first few minutes wouldn't he? Had not heard this live version, I've heard the recorded version many times. I second the recommendation of Alone from Angie. A different tone and energy to that one. Great reaction and analysis as always Jen. 😊
You should check out "Alone" and "Barracuda." Those are two of their other biggest hits. "Alone" has some moments that really showcase Ann Wilson's amazing range and expression. You'll also get to hear more of Nancy's incredible backup vocals if you dig more into their catalogue. There's a live show they did in Seattle back in the early 2000s that has an amazing version of "Alone."
I can personally attest to how amazing they sound live. Been there, done that, August 16th 1977. Think about that date, it's a moment in music history.
My favorite female rock vocalist of all time! And Nancy on the guitar! These ladies are still slaying it. Check out the duet on between David Draiman and Ann Wilson on Disturbed's "Divisive" album that dropped in Nov 2022. They just released a video for it, and Ann is still killing it at age 73 ... my Queen! 👑
At about 18:00 you have 2 guitars playing a harmonizing "licks" and there is an intentional vocal contribution with "oooooh" or whatever to also harmonize with the 2 guitars.
This is always so special for me, I was born in the same town, a Mile away from the Heart residence, they had a mansion in Bothell, Mill Creek now. I was born in 72 , had 5 older brothers and a sister who were friends with them in the post generation of the 60s. My bros were all popular big 70s partiers. It was such a cool place in the woods back then. Smoking weed and jamming to the killer 70s rock. Heart was everybody's love around here. Seattle loves them, or at least the old Seattle, north area. It was all just a wild forest back then.
Anne singing at the Kennedy Honors for Led Zeppelin is definitely worth a view. You will see a huge grin on Robert Plant's face during the performance.
Ann Wilson and Robert Plant are the ones that taught me,in my teens, how to hit those notes like that. I give them all the props, and forever grateful to them.💜😎👍💃😊
Jennifer, your excellent analyses very nicely complement what I describe in the rest of my comment. Working from my memory, a very dangerous thing to do, Rick Beato includes Nancy's guitar playing in his list of the 20 best acoustic guitar introductions (number 14, think), but more importantly, he declined to play it himself, instead using a video clip (this performance, I think) because he didn't feel that he could do it justice. Also, Fil, on his YT channel "Wings of Pegasus", spent time showing Ann's expert use of the particular type of microphone that she used. All in all, Heart's epic performances inspired some epic reactions, including yours. Thank you.
Jen, I love that you did this. Ann Wilson in her 70s still has a great voice. One of the main reasons is she was taught by Maestro David P Kyle. Look him up. He taught a lot of the great rockers and opera singers alike.😊
Barracuda and Magic Man are my favorites. They’re high school to me when life was sweeter, simpler, and just plain fun. The old phrase “you don’t know what you got until it’s gone” applies here. Ah, if only you could have a do over. Well you can’t, but there’s always next time around. Here’s to next time around people 👍🤘🎸😁!!!!
This is a great rock band that started in the 70's. Ann Wilson has one of the most powerful female voices. And her sister Nancy can play a mean guitar. They have had so many great hits such as "Barracuda", "Magic Man", "What About Love", "Never", "Dog & Butterfly", "These Dreams", "Alone" etc. In 2012 Ann & Nancy performed at the Kennedy Center Honors in a tribute to Led Zeppelin doing their classic song "Stairway To Heaven".
My first time watching your channel.... Ann Wilson is my favorite female vocalist of all time.... I'm glad I watched, because you have a fantastic voice as well.... I subscribed ❤️🙏
The Wilson sisters claim their song "Mistral Wind" as their favorite. You should check out the Seattle 2002 performance. Ann's vocals are impressive (per usual).

These Dreams is great, bbut I always like people reacting to their "Barracuda" in 1977 - that song and "Magic Man" are the two that put the Wilson sisters on the audio map.
No matter how many times I hear this song, I’m still struck by how beautiful and peaceful and harmonic Nancy’s guitar solo is at the beginning, it almost brings a tear to my eye. I also love it because it’s such a misdirection from what’s coming, of course

Discovered them on the first album drove halfway across Texas a few months later for the first Texas jam and the rest is history truly amazing musicians and vocals
When this song broke on radio I was lucky enough to see them at a bar in Canton, Ohio. A real hole of a place.. they were dazzling. The vocals bounced off the walls.
Thanks, Jen! I have three more favorites from Heart than the two you have done: These Dreams, Alone, and Magic Man. I saw Heart at least twice in the 80s and it was a great show every time! I would also throw into the mix the latest Disturbed video release featuring Ann Wilson, Don’t Tell Me. Ann’s voice with David’s voice equals pure beauty and strength!
This is hilarious how you've never heard this song before; and one of the most ICONIC acoustic guitar intros EVER!....and well Ann, the BEST female rocker ever!
Saw Heart 5 or 6 times in the 70's. Incredible concerts. Tons of energy from the stage. Never heard anything ever that felt like they took some time off for a few minutes. As great as they sound here the amps and things in the 70's were different. Ann was a force on stage. And the 70's were the perfect time for them.
Heart has always been in my top 3 favorites. If you want more of Ann and Nancy, check out a band that they had called "The Lovemongers." Whirlygig was an awesome album. Great analysis and video, Jen. Thank you

Now you are aware that Ann wilson is the best rock singer or all time. Her voice is magical and her stage presence is intoxicating. She wrote most of this as well. Crazy, huh?
One of the most underrated songs they do is s cover of aging Them Bells, originally by Bob Dylan. It's a duet with Layne Staley from Alice in Chains, and Nancy sings about half the song. Ann joins in at the end. The whole song is really good.
I remember hearing them on FM radio from Vancouver BC in the mid 1970s. Absolutely riveting music at that time. It’s hard to explain how startling Ann and Nancy’s sound was - there were no other examples in music history that I can remember. It’s like Jimi: it’s easy to forget how revolutionary they were, as so many artists have been influenced by their work.
That intro is an example of why Nancy Wilson is listed as one of the greatest guitarists. The real intro of this song, Nancy, has 3 or 4 versions. So if you think you learned it, someone will play another version, and you have to try and learn that one.
Hello Jennifer... My name is Brian from White Bear Lake, Minnesota, USA...Loved the reaction to Heart's song/video 'Crazy On You'. Yes Ann Wilson could sing her butt off while her sister Nancy Wilson jammed on the guitar... However, if you really want to hear an amazing vocalist then you have to watch Iron Maiden's video for the song 'Hallowed Be Thy Name' 1982 Live from Hammersmith. Singer Bruce Dickinson's voice is considered to be operatic by many people. So if you have not done them already then this video should be your first introduction to Iron Maiden and Bruce Dickinson's voice, this is back when Bruce's voice was in its prime. If you do not react to this video then i really think you are missing out on the best singing voice in rock ever. There is a good reason why in my opinion i think every other rock singer secretly wishes they could sing like 'Bruce Dickinson'. Also Bruce can hold a note longer than any other singer, his vocal range is unmatched along with his amazing long vibratos. So i really think you should consider doing a reaction to the 1985 Live from Hammersmith video for "Hallowed Be Thy Name", which is about a man sitting on death row being sent to the gallows and looking back on his life. **Pay Attention To The Long Note In Beginning Of Song, And The 2 Long Notes At End Of Song**...Pretty much all of Iron Maiden's songs are about an important event that has happened in history, so it is almost like having a history lesson in every song. So Thank You Jennifer... ~Brian~ White Bear Lake, Minnesota.. 😁 🤘🤘 (click link below) th-cam.com/video/7vP2hFFV57E/w-d-xo.html&feature=share
I would love to see you go down the Heart rabbit hole. Ann's sister Nancy has a beautiful voice as well and hearing them sing together is truly magical. Try Straight On or Dog and Butterfly.
Nancy played variants of this intro in every concert. Distinctively different variants. She's gorgeous and an amazing musician.
And guitarist across the land lost their minds in failed attempts to duplicate her intro😅
She finally revealed it during a YT interview.
Yeah, she was mixing in acoustic parts from multiple songs into the intro here. At least 2 other songs I could recognize, though I don't remember the names.

How can you be a voice coach and this is the first time you have heard the magnificent Ann Wilson? Shameful

Absolutely! She's one of my two favorite female singers. Have always wore these ladies songs out. I got this Album when it first came out 💜💃😎👍

😁 🤘🤘 (click link below)

I would love to see you go down the Heart rabbit hole. Ann's sister Nancy has a beautiful voice as well and hearing them sing together is truly magical. Try Straight On or Dog and Butterfly.
Ann was crazy for her magic man. Ended in tears of course 😢
This is pure music
