Sadly, it has been confirmed that he suffered a complete knee dislocation, lets hope it doesnt get any worse
that's about as worst as it gets, years of rehab ahead of him to be normal, i dont think he'll play professional football ever again, this isnt a simple acl tear
@@robertlangdon494 Some journalists are saying that he will be out from 8 to 12 months, Im more worried about what Brian said of the blood vessel, but if they acted quickly enough, he should be able to play again I think
nahh .. dude will be lucky if he can still run normally
@@robertlangdon494his probably going to be back after a year
@@dimitri5 a dortmund youth player suffered a similar injury years ago and had to retire.
It wasn’t dirty. Marcelo done a bit of skill to get past Sanchez and Marcelo’s left leg quickly needed to land anywhere to keep his balance which just happened to be on Sanchez’s stuck out leg.
I agree 100%
"work accident" as we say here in Brazil. That kind of thing that may happen, nobody wanted to, it's bad and It's really unfortunate.
100% mate. Those who said it was a red are just wrong. He was on possession. He wasn't attempting a tackle. It was just bad luck that the other players leg was in the way of his landing. Really unfortunate
@@h2kistheshits dont think marcelo would even want to play anymore after that accident
If someone's was at fault , well , you can say was the man with the broken leg.
Thanks for the quick explanation, Doc. The latests news we have here is that the player was taken to a hospital for studies, certainly one of the worst injuries I have seen watching football and as an argentinian of 46, you can imagine I've seen a lot. If there is no incovenience for you, I will try to keep you updated about the diagnosis and further condition as soon news are being posted. Thanks again
PS: I have read comments about the intentionality of the play, but for what we have seen on the afterplay and how Marcelo reacts (you can see his reaction in many websites now), seems it was unintended. Same think the players and staff from Argentinos Juniors. Looks Marcelo tried to cover the ball from the entrance of Sanchez and never realized the leg was extended below him. It's very normal for a ball carrier to extend his legs to protect the ball, specially the one further away from it and sometimes it step in the rival's leg, but usually the thing dont go beyond the marks of the boot on the leg. Things like this are very uncommon. See ya
Yes. Also as an Argentinian I agree with the above. This is the worst injury I’ve seen. Argentinos should have won if not for the goalie incident. More importantly however, Ganooooo Rrrrriver!!!!
@@RangersMavsCowboysEscribí en español, cogido.
This greatly shocked all the brazilian sports press, general press and content creators. Really hope this dude fully recovers in the fastest way possible and resume his carreer. Many speculated about the end of his career, thats terrifying, its one of the worst things that can happen in football. I hope Marcelo, Argentinos Jr and even Conmeboll offers full money suport to this guy.
Tbh Dario Scuderi's injury was far worse
Also there was a Honduran player whose knee hyperextended backwards completely
Geezus. That's Definitely one of the worst knee injuries I've ever seen.
Edit: the X-ray was posted onto the r/radiology subreddit. It's a complete knee dislocation. Looking at the X-ray (and I'm not an ortho or anything like that) I would be very surprised if one ligament stayed intact
That was accidental but absolutely horrible.
Def.. he tried to use that leg as support which is why the injury was caused. Marcelo’s full weight went onto the leg and the only break in that line was the knee/ knee ligaments
This wasn't accidental at all, we learn to do this to injure/revenge players in Brazil along many other dirty little moves to make it look like an accident, is more common in lower division since there is less professionalism and less intolerance for this kind of low blows, but this had all the intention of hurt, he probably just wasn't expecting a career ending injure, but he wanted to give him a "fica queto" kkkkk
I am almost surprised there are not more of these types of serious soccer injuries at lower levels (high school etc) where players are not as skilled and play very aggressively putting themselves in dangerous positions.
Because they teach you to go in aggressively in youth unlike in the pros where diving is encouraged
This is something that rarely happens. A terrible and unfortunate accident.
There is. You just don't hear about it as much because they are not famous. I've seen a kid get hit in the stomach and die.
Seen head injuries. All sorts of stuff. Some make the news but most don't.
@@toast7969 ive had my whole knee on a kids chest and he was winded and taken off the field? How tf did the kid die? Was the kid like 60 lbs?
@toast7969
same question here.
The kid was hit in the stomach, and the kid died?
Did he had a liver tear or artery torn.
Can't think of anything else being the cause of death.
Maybe a fragile build kid ...Could be..
Easily one of the most gruesome injuries I've seen, Doc, watching football for all my life. The players' immediate reaction to it says it all. And it was definitely NOT intentional by Marcelo, you can even say that he did nothing wrong with his movement: he wasn't careless, he was getting away from a tackle, with the ball close at feet, trying to skip past a challenge. Plays like that happen hundreds of times during a match, and it was unfortunate that the mechanics of it caused such a bad injury. Hope Sanchez gets back on the pitch soon.
If you want to check a similar play, look for Maikon Leite's knee injury playing for Santos in 2008. Pretty much the same result, but from a knee-to-knee collision. He recovered in 8 months, but had an injury-plagued career (ruptured his ACL again some months after)
I wonder if it's actually possible for him to play properly again.
Ok, last info: according to the general manager (who is also medic) Sanchez have all the ligaments (even the kneecap one) broken or partially broken. He said is the worst injury he have seen in 23 years as doctor and the national team doctor, a 40 years experienced man, said the same. He explained that, basically, the femur and the fibula get separated but, luckily, without vascular compromise. Sanchez will need at least 2 quirurgic interventions and recovery may take between 10 and 12 months if everything goes right.
Want to know about it, but watching with my eyes closed!
When you posted this, everyone else was saying it was broken.
You called it 5 hours before the Associated Press finally got it right. Very impressive.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
This might be one of the worst injuries in football history, hope he gets well and continue to play football ❤😢
I’d hate to blame someone for their own injury but this was obviously a wreck less play by Luciano Sánchez that 99 percent of the time would result in no contact or a foul on him. Marcelo is just dribbling around him in full control of the ball.
There’s an injury I’d be interested to see you comment on. Back in 2010 or 2011 Cubs outfielder Tyler Colvin got hit by the sharp end of a broken bat and had a collapsed lung. They say that it was just inches from being a fatal injury. He missed the remainder of the season but did ultimately return to the field
Not as bad as the NHL player getting his neck sliced, pouring blood onto the ice.
Also Kevin Ware’s injury where is knee bone literally came out of his body
@@mm-zn5ju weirdest injury I've seen.
@@blue-phoenix115Dr Sutterer needs to make a video on that if he hasn’t already
@@blue-phoenix115 now it’s happened worst case scenario 😢
As soon as I saw the injury, it reminded me of Shaun Livingston injury. One of the worst I've ever seen and it seems it was a pretty similar injury. Hope he recovers the same way Livingston did.
Livingston one looked scarier caused it looked like the leg literally snapped.
I’m reminded of the injury that ended Zach Miller’s career and almost killed him. The extreme hyperextension/break in this case looked more similar to that.
Finally he is covering Football
Great video doc!!
omg!! tysm for this dr. mike, I finally found the channel I was always looking for. This is a very educational vdo .
Thanks for the explanation, hope and wish that he will get well soon
Nice work doc 🤝
Thank you Brian
I was waiting for you to explain this
I was watching this live earlier and I thought of tweeting at you to make a video!
Hi Dr, thank you for talking about this gruesome injury. I'm a fan of Argentinos Juniors and I was watching that game live, it was terrible. The player himself came from a different team in 2nd Division and even worked at a supermarket to make ends meet. He came to Argentinos last year and had just became a regular in the lineup because the starter, Kevin Mac Allister (Alexis' brother) got sold to Belgium. He had been heavily and unfairly criticized by a lot of the fans and I had always noticed he played well.
I truly hope he gets to recover and is able to get his career back on track.
Brian i have followed your channel for a long time now and always had an appreciation for the content you produce. I myself had a terrible e incident July 15th and immediately wondered how you would describe this one hahaha..Was at Rock the Park in London Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 i slipped because of the mud and did the splits. I have rheumatoid arthritis, and the meds i take apparently have weakened my bones. When i fell, i dislocated my knee and got a spiral fracture to my right femur. It was absolutely horrificly painful, and i was in the hospital for 10 days. Looking at a long recovery now
Gracias Doc por la explicación. 🫵
Just for clarification, Marcelo didn't cause this on purpose. Almost immediately after he saw him injured he stopped playing.
Marcelo is a good actor we saw it when he played for real madrid. He needs to be given a life ban
This injury reminds me a lot of ex bball player shaun livingston. He ended up dislocating or shattering his knee and needed surgery immediately right after.
Another reason not to dive in to a tackle
It wasn’t even a tackle but you have a point idk why players go in like that for a ball they can’t win
They are professionals trained to play at an intense rhythm. Safe play usually doesn't cut it at that level. Especially playing in the copa libertadores.
man was never near to the ball and ended up costing him bad.
@@tpndgo2061 this comment tells me you never played Football ⚽️
It was very interesting, you should do more soccer Injuries, I’d like to know more about this since I am in sports medicine field! Thanks keep it up!
Looks horrible not intentional. Marcelo doesn’t know where the guy’s leg is and never looks at his opponent. He’s focused on his own movement completely.
He should've looked tho
It was the man on red fault. who makes splits during a football match ? Only him !
Had a similar angle of hyperextension. I guess the most serious part would've been the severed artery. Second in importance would be the peroneal nerve damage(drop foot). After that its the bone, ligament, tendon, cartilage repair. Hope he recovers to walk and maybe run again.
It does look bad for sure.
I wouldn't be surprised if this game is over for him now.
If his meniscus is still intact I think he should retire…
Lot of people blaming marcelo, this looks to be just extremely unlucky. Sanchez goes in to win the ball and marcelo is trying to protect the ball. This is just crazy bad luck!!
Literally the first rule of defense is to never dive into a tackle
@@Blyke14 sure but marcelo isnt playing defense
@@pung4759 talking about Sanchez, he was being reckless and dove into the tackle
@@Blyke14 oh yeah. Probably a bit overeager defending but still crazy bad luck aswell
@@Blyke14 I totally disagree. Sanchez was trying to hit the ball and when he started the tackle, Marcelo's leg was still retracted. Marcelo moved the leg at the same time as Sanchez and made a very unnatural wide step to the left after making the ball go in the opposite direction. So, he's either very clumsy or maybe he predicted the tackle and was trying to protect the ball.
Brutal injury 😮
My knee hurts just from watching this video. I cant imagine the pain Luciano is going through. 😢
That is horrific 😢
When I saw this I immediately knew it was a knee injury. Not broken bones. As someone who had a torn ACL for 8 years and finally got it reconstructed this year I can tell you that this is the 2nd worst knee injury I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen many!
1st place There’s an NFL player who played for the patriots. He tore all 4 ligaments, dislocated his knee and ruptured his artery. and the worst part about it is that no one touched him, he just landed insanely wrong
Similar to what happened to Dario Scuderi, former Borussia Dormund player. Unfortunately he had to retire a while after the injury
Good doctor
Thanks Brian,
Brutal 🫰🏼
Gruesome break! Thanks for the explanation and thanks for also calling it football ⚽️, not "soccer"!
Bro please jokes aside are you a kid or mentally handicapped person please don't joke again
Doc, do you think Sanchez will be able to play actively again, and if yes how long will it take him to fully recover, thank you..
All depends on if the popliteal artery is damaged and if so, can they get blood supply restored quickly enough, otherwise tissue death and amputation are possibilities and he could never play again. Either way it looks significant enough to assume he will have significant absence no matter what
@@iode9999 thanks so much I appreciate 🙏🏿🙏🏿
An injury like this could be career-ending, especially if nerve damage results from this.
Ion think he’s gonna come back so it’s career ending fa sure
@@Roycepapii his doctors said it'll be a 8-12 months recovery so I think they've already discarded career ending
Hello Doctor, do you have any thoughts on NY Yankee Anthony Rizzo who was just diagnosed with post concussion syndrome from an on field collision he had with another player on May 28th? What exactly is post concussion syndrome and how is it possible that the team trainers missed the initial concussion? I’m no doctor but when I saw that collision, he looked to be very disoriented after the hit. After the Tua situation in the NFL last year, I think many sports fans are becoming hyper aware of possible concussions, and I’m wondering if the Yankees organization, or the MLB in general should re-evaluate their concussion protocol. But I wonder if you would make any comments specifically about post concussion syndrome in general and what Rizzo’s treatment and recovery might look like. Thanks, I enjoy watching your content. 🙂
I don’t care what the Doc says, that lower leg was bending on the way down.
I do agree, in the end that looks more like a knee injury than a broken leg. The knee should not bend like that.
You should care what doctors say.
Bones and flesh have some flex I imagine
Guess the talk of random nobody is more trustworthy than a doctor with years of training.
thank you
Oh dear that looks awful. Hope he can recover
I know footbal, and it was accidental.
100% not a dirty play. Just extremely unfortunate.
That's a new fear for me 😢🤯😱
Almost looked like he dislocated his left hip too. Ouch
The knee discolation where the blood supply was cut off scenario that he mentions happened to former Chicago Bear Zack Miller. They were able to save his leg fortunately. Never played again
I wish him the best. I hope he dont lose his leg.
This reminds me of Marcus Lattimore and what he went through with his absolutely demolished knee. Hopefully the outcome is different.
Yea, same
@@BrianSuttererMD thanks for the reply, Doc! I'm a huge fan of the channel!!!
Similar to Dario Scuderi
For those saying it was intentional, I understand it may seem unnatural to some. But if you ever watched Real Madrid's Marcelo, that's his movement after rolling. Just watch this video at 11seg for Real Madrid, also after rolling the ball how he lands the left leg. It's also about chance, we see way more reckless players during a whole career but never breaking someone's legs like that, and usually they dont have the ball when this happens. But sadly, this time, when he had the ball it turned out being one of the worst injuries I've seen😔. Plus he was clearly shocked too and stopped right away
th-cam.com/users/shortsTn-Q0CD_Teo?feature=share
Marcelo lands his leg almost at the exact spot he sole-rolled the ball away with that same leg. That may be his style, but it's a dumb, faux style. Surely hope that other guy is gonna be ok.
@@CoenM33true but looking by Marcelo reaction I don’t believe he meant to break his leg off
Can you make a video about Marcus Stroman? I’m not sure what fractured rib cartilage means, but it sounds really painful
Thank you for referring to The Beautiful Game by its proper name: FOOTBALL.
It wasn’t intentional but it was a terrible way of shielding the ball. You don’t stump to shield. he’s been doing this way back in Madrid but players over there don’t slide to tackle often.
Bound to go wrong someday
Ouch!!!
Seen this kind of knee injury with Napoleon McCallum, Raider Running back. Different kind of impact but the same Knee dislocation.
Man listening to Brian, i wish i studied medicine!
Doc I don't miss a video especially when it's on football but I think I'll sit this one out too squeamish left a like tho❤
this is a horrible injury, I’ve seen ones similar to this from Demba Ba & Djibril Cisse but they were clear leg breaks, there’s no chance it was intentional from Marcelo, he’s never been that type of player
Except against Barca
@@Rolandinho819 marcelo has never gone out of his way to purposely hurt people, especially like that
@@rossthomassssgoogle “Fabregas first Classico, Marcello” lol
Damn, it just happend, this is what i call fast
I was watching this game Live and this shit scared the hell out of me, i feel sad for him but at his age (29) he should pray to god if he could play and run with his Kids normally again.
Hope for his recovery
Holy hell 😳
Got news: "Si bien el club aún no hizo oficial el parte, sufrió la luxación completa de la rodilla izquierda. La recuperación le demandará entre ocho y 12 meses"; will try to translate as best as I can: "Even when the team didnt make it official, its known that (Sanchez) suffered a complete left knee dislocation". Recovery will take between 8 and 12 months":
Thats possibly a career ending injury , nothing about it looked clean , his leg crumpled , the break , and all those ligaments around the knee could be damaged.
Obviously i hope he comes back but it looks more like a motorbike injury or something.
There is one worse one i can remember and its David Busst injury for coventry in 1996.
From memory his foot is planted and a player either falls or kicks into the lower leg , but as that happens another player hits above the injury at the same time leading to his leg almost snapping in half , it put an end to his career.
Im sure it was a goal line melee with several players and he got his leg trapped
That’s horrible recently i got my mensicus repair it was worst time it’s more serious than mine. Speed recovery for luciano sanchez😢😢
Nice knee talk doc.
que manera de volver a las noches magicas de libertadores jsjs, un capo el doc
Hey, can you do a video about Ohtani keep cramping during the game? It would be great content. TY
Holy sweet mother....that is one gross injury.
Can you do a neurological assessment of Errol Spence before the Crawford fight? I have my suspicions of Errol not being entirely there, and there were some abnormalities that went on in the fight that just didn’t seem right.
Horrible injury 😢
Pray for a quick recovery 🙏
Marcelo is not at fault. No one is.
When seeing his movement and the angle of his body, it was natural and essential to land his foot where he did, to keep his balance. Clearly an accident
I'm no expert but when I played football as a defense the trainer told us to always avoid such a wide angle with the leg because you are risking the knee. From what I'm seeing the coach was right.
If there is someone to " blame " will be the number three.
Pole sana..... ohh. its heart breaking, people should be more careful. i really shed tears for the first time in football
Brian could you make a video of WWE injuries? There is one I noticed on wrestler Sami Zayn. His left elbow has a giant ball of fluid which seems to be a torn triceps

It wasn't a dirty tackle imo. He was just trying to change direction and Sanchez leg was just in the wrong place, complete accident. Hope they both recover as Marcelo looked very traumatised 😔
