His teammate in an interview said he was losing blood all night and they were worried they wouldn't be able to help him get through the night.

I heard they didn't have the right medical staff around it was the Serbian doctor that came with the team was enraged that local health care didn't take it seriously.
How would teammates know he was losing blood since it was an internal organ injury?
Saw this yesterday, I was beyond surprised. Prayers up and I hope he recovers fast and fully.

thats crazy. That elbow, while 'unnecessary' is such a common move by offensive players. I'd hate to lose a kidney for such a mundane play
Yeah, it's just a freak basketball play. Kinda like the Tee Higgins hit on Damar Hamlin. It'd be a 100% routine play if it weren't for the incredibly serious injury that happened.
True but this is the reason we see those sharp elbows flare out that way being called offensive fouls. A lot of NBA players did this 90's - 2000's to create space but now it's more of footwork to make space when scoring down low. Either that or using shoulder to create space. Elbows though is bad.
nah, this looks intentional on the americans part. look good and lose than look bad and win
It was the way I was taught in highschool way back when and similar to how I would spin around players for rebounding position when their back was to me, except the elbow would be in their chest or abdomen.
@@youtubegavemynameawaycuntbagsthat wasn’t america that was south sudan
My friend showed me this morning and I freaked out that this was a possibility. Thank you for alleviating my concerns about the rarity of this incident 🙏 most unfortunate for Borisa but hoping for a healthy career moving forward
Prayers up for Mr. Borisa 🙏
Thank you Dr for the great explanation of this unfortunate injury.
This is insane and one of the crazier stories you’ve posted. This play happens dozens of times a game. I’ve never seen or heard of this before and it’s scary this is even possible.
yeah, certainly not an innocuous play at all. just like the Hamlin play

ti is called vaxxed. lol
His wind up was huge, ik in boxing if you hit a certain spot like a liver shot it can cause an opponent to stop moving, getting knockout without knocking them out, so maybe its the same thing with this, you hit just the exact point that it destroyed his kidney
Great video doc.
Very informative.
Fiba fans now also understand medical insights. It is just so sad for this to happened.
Anyone who says basketball is a non-contact sport hasn't played or seen high-level basketball. It's Simanic's decision (and his team's) of course, but keep in mind that opposing players now know his major weakness and when championships and lots of money are on the line sportsmanship can go out the window.
The lack of medical attention in the Philippines got exposed today. Good thing the team got strings to pull. But for ordinary everyday Filipinos, it's sure death and the politicians will simply shrug it off and watch the games in VIP areas of the arenas.
First of all, basketball IS a contact sport, and has been classified as such for 30+ years. It is NOT, however, considered a collision sport.
Second of all, what?

I have more injuries in playing basketball as teen than doing MMA, the difference is that injuries during a basketball game is unexpected unlike in MMA where I am aware of the attacks and makes me able to defend it.
Same here. I be boxing. Even though I only been boxing 3 years on and off. I suffered way more injuries doing basketball than boxing....
That's weird a.f.
Wtf damnit, never knew this was possible 😮

@@pbradics3670 maybe the serbian player had low abdomen muscle thats why the collision hit his rib bones directly
When you let primitive guys like that nuni omot play basketball that's what you get. It's basketball not martial arts
Its so common to elbow someone like that. Usually its less of a hit and more of a push/shove, but still crazy that someone can loose a kidney from that
Lose*
*losted
Nah that was intentional
players use their elbow to make a hook on the body but not intentionally hit a body part....thats the difference...

Dang this video was so rich on information. Thanks doc!
Hit my kidney once while skating and it was the most painfull injury I ever had on a skateboarding. Was not able to normaly skate for about 2 months .
Fiba should do something about this.
They can kick out African teams..but of course they won't do it
@@goxyeagle8446 They reviewed the play and didn't even call it a foul, let alone an unsportsmanlike foul or something deserving of a fine/suspension.
It's insane.
@@dismantledbrain5910 Holding a ball in right hand and swing with left elbow in martial arts manner, this is not for basketball!
I think he was hit directly where his ribs were but the way he was slightly twisted and also extending his arm up like he was about to jump shifted his ribs just enough to open up his internal organ that would normally be protected by ribs.
Combined with it being unexpected and blind the hit from the front but with the rotational force being sideways and hitting the absolute worst spot.
Like the doctor said it looked like a rib breaking shot but it snuck past the ribs and went straight to his kidney.
It was unintentional play by Nuni Omot. On behalf of my fellow South Sudanese, we are deeply sorry for this incident. Prayers to Semanic and wishing him a quick recovery. This is sad.
Has he considered switching sports to MMA?
Please ban that player on fiba to avoid that to other fiba players

As usual your videos are better than any doctor consultation will ever be.
My prayers to Mr Borisa and Serbia at large. May God heal you and restore your health. This is unfortunate & hard to believe just like Dr clearly explained. I've watched rugby players get hits at such areas but impacts never this bad! I think God was just tryna tell basketball players to be more cautious & brothers keepers too.
I enjoyed the beautiful game between my Country South Sudan 🇸🇸 and Serbia. Can promise you that it was not intentional at all😢
The player is one of our disciplined stars. Sorry for this unimaginable incident. I feel the pain & fear as a basketball player too
Thanks Dr Brian, learned something also about that blood/type❤
Thanks for this Dr. It was very informational that these types of injuries can happen although on rare occasions. Hope that he will come back 100%. Would you also be able analyze the injury or Jeremiah Gray? Thank you!
I knew you were gonna cover this as soon as I saw this play.
Very informative ❤
Kinda makes you wonder how this doesn't happen more often in MMA with dudes being punted, full force, in the ribs and/or midsection quite regularly. I've heard plenty of stories about guys pissing blood after taking nasty shots to the liver, but I don't remember ever hearing about anybody needing an internal organ removed... aside from Michael Bisping's eye, of course.
Basketball game can be so nasty sometimes. Any player who elbows the opponent so violently should be banned from the sport.
....no way is basketball a non contact sport; I mean officially it should be, but in reality....
Even officially not.
Have you ever boxed out before a rebound playing with huge guys?
Basketball is a very physical sport especially pick up constant elbows hip checks swipes at your arms on every drive
@@tydendurler9574 why yes I did, just yesterday 😅😅 I was just saying "officially" so as to not seem as Im contradicting the good doctor, but I wholeheartedly agree that basketball is NOT a noncontact sport
Everyone who has played basketball knows the physicality of the game, but using the elbow in this way is always dangerous, and the referees who do not call these fouls are co-responsible for the damage caused
Heard that news i was shocked by thr severity of his injury. Hope hes doing fine by now but def losing one kidney def affects his health but athletes are strong.
This doctor is the doctor strange of sports
The kidney is a lot smaller than I imagined it’d be… this injury goes to show how truly delicate they are😳
Thank you doc
Thanks doc
"inadvertent", that's a good one. Maybe he didn't mean to destroy the guy's kidney, but he meant to hit him hard in the stomach with an elbow.
Why do I feel like I just went through 10 minutes of Medical School? I did not know one could lose a kidney playing basketball.
Bro's elbow has piercing damage.

Unfortunate injury. Just wondering could there also be anatomical differences in how deep the kidney is? Maybe Simanic had a kidney that was more superficial?
Another possible explanation is the first surgeon screwed up and did not solve the kidney hemorrhagic condition. Then the second surgery had no other option to remove it totally.
For sure.. same thoughts.. it ll be different if it happened in japan..
Oh wow! What sh*** thinking
@@Jamie-dj6cl sh*** thinking is to think surgeons are flawless and sh*** thinking is to assume my comment was racist. have a good day !

Not what the Serbian physician is saying.. he was grateful
I agree. I would expect a spleen injury long before a kidney injury. Unless he had some preexisting issue triggered by the hit??
Basketball since 1900's first kidney injury caused by that motion, i think. How's that 1 in a million chance hit you? That's unfortunate.
All my homies love Doc
I figured it happened while he fell asleep in the ice tub _after_ the game.
"Extremely rare in basketball"
Karl Malone: hold my beer
That elbow was thrown with purpose.
Damn that is super scary
First responder question: any tips on diagnosing a kidney injury vs a liver or spleen injury? I suppose all are treated the same initially, with rapid transport to advanced care.
Thanks in advance.
1. It wasn't inadvertent. It looks like the player was retaliating from some contact from the Serbian player, probably from a previous play
2. People in the comments saying that this is a common play in basketball. No it's not. You people don't probably don't play basketball
I'm convinced he didn't lose his kidney because of this hit rather than because of some kind of doctor's mistake during the first surgery. Something must've been done wrong there. That kidney should've been saved.
Retired RN here: blunt force can cause a kidney to break in half or into more pieces. Or the blunt force caused the kidney to break across its blood supply. As far as "the doctor did something wrong" theory, he had several doctors and nurses caring for him which makes it far less likely something went wrong in his treatment. I'm glad he survived! Best wishes for a smooth recovery.
i got elbowed like that but thankfully(i guess) in my ribs while having my arms straight up playing D broke at least 1 of my ribs on the left side most likely 2 though it was so painful for months and months after especially laying down its been like 5 years and there is still a indent of where this guys elbow connected with my rib/ribs
I don't understand how this could happen we watch mma and boxing and they get hit a lot harder this is just horrible what happened to Borisa hope he recovers soon.
He was not trained to take strikes on the abdomen and he did not expected it too, unlike fighters who usually ate trained to take hits
I don't think in mma they get hit harder. South Sudanes player has probably more than 100 kg of mass, and he hit him with full force with spining elbow. You dont see that move in mma, and average mma fighter with 60 to 70 kg are much weaker than this guy.
I think this was a freak accident and it wasn't the hardest hit.
IMO
His upper body was turned slightly left and his lower body right and his arm extending over his head and you never see this position in fighting sports. It lifts and pulls back his ribcage and opens up a tiny spot with no muscle that is normally protected by bone.
@@milanstanic6240This is nowhere close to the power the mma fighters take when absorbing side kicks .
@@milanstanic6240 the sudan dude doesnt even weight 100kg lol, what kind of comment is this
If that's the case... players should have a sort of padding inside jerseys to minimize the damage on kidneys
Wow. Life's unfair.

I hope he recover soon😢 from🇵🇭🤝🏻🇸🇰
Wrong flag, it should be 🇷🇸
That is so strange. It looked like such an everyday play in basketball. Granted, you shouldn't clear people out with an elbow. You would never have thought he would actually lose a kidney in that play? Such a freak accident...
This indeed is shocking. Unbelievable... and then there is boxing or mma where people hit each others all the time.
If you play it from another angle, u can see the force is much greater that u can see in this slowmo, also it was intentional, but he didnt expect it would be such a horrible injury.
Why was that hand movement needed? The ball is in the other hand and it doesn't even naturally follow the movement of the body - it looks forced and intentional, correct me if I'm wrong.
Crazy that this hit was enough, to do damage beyond repair to a kidney.
I expected that belly fat and muscle would easily take that hit.
The more you know.
The kidneys are not intraabdominal... They're retroperitoneal
That's not space creation. That was literally just an intentional elbow. Nothing flagrant, still a freak accident. Wouldn't so much as cause a bruise 99.99% of the time.
It's surprising that normal blow from the side caused this and ultimately removal.
😮 Wow, that’s rare.
The blood type rundown Was really interesting, I’m type O.
I've never even seen that happen in combat sports.
I see so many elbows thrown and it's almost always just a common offensive foul I had no idea someone could lose a kidney
As a Serb im so sorry what happen to our BB player, this people risk all to play for free to our national team, sport is for like all people here "only way out" and i need to ask,can he play profesional Basketball again...sorry for bad English

Borisa Simanic needed RH negative blood, which caused the trouble in procuring the blood.

Really looks like Unlucky Situation, I played ball, was hit often around the ab region and never had an issue
The Dude is so slim, an adipose fat or a muscle tru training couldve save his kidney from a dangerous force from that elbow, even though it is basketball it is still a physical contact sport, so it is a battle field, that is why boxers do these insane 500 sit /pull ups a day to make that area tough enough to receive a blow before a fight..in every sport physical training is very important.
Shame on FIBA for not being able to provide better medical support to these players. If they deemed Phillipines to be suitable place to organize such event, than they should have made sure players and national teams didn't have to try to go through the embassy to get a Dr.
People in the Phillipines have been awesome and really welcoming, my comment has nothing to do with them but more about the governing bodies who organized the tournament with FIBA at the relm. Best of luck to our Boriša.
Isn't it a standard practice to include a medical doctor in the team? And I don't think you should go to the embassy but straight to the hospital.
Please enlighten me since I don't know the team staff. All I know is that our national team always has a medical staff with them anywhere around the world.
Anyway, the hospital where he was sent to is one of the country's 2 premier hospitals, and they're used to getting tapped for international events like this. They also have a lot of patients from all over the world so, unless his blood is very rare, it shouldn't be that hard to find him a match.
It was a freak accident, I think there's some information that wasn't released publicly to protect the patient's medical details. I used to work there, and they're veyr strict with releasing such information.
Not what the Serbian physician has been saying.. he was grateful
You don't know what you're talking about! The injured Serbian player was immediately brought to Makati Medical Center where he got examined & had surgery. He was provided with enough medical assistance as soon as it happened. The kidney operation was successful and he has now returned back to Germany.
@@rm_alfaro dude, for security and privacy purposes just leave the name out of public's eye. If you're part of the organization, you're being unprofessional right now.
@@athenstar10 Dude, I got the name of the hospital from a legit news article written about the Serbian player who lost a kidney in the FIBA World Cup. So it was already made public! I just wanted to point out that there was a medical team on stand by in the venue at the MOA Arena for each game. It's a pretty standard practice and protocol for any international event. The FIBA WC Local Organizing Committee (LOC) has given the Serbian team all the assistance needed to make sure that Borisa Simanic was ok and that he was immediately brought to the hospital.
This was such a freak accident that i thought it was a joke when they first reported this,so sad
Imagine how many times boxers, mma fighters gets hit in that area
With this rare and recent incident, should players now be required to have some sort of cushion protection on some critical parts of the body?
Thank god he is alive. What will happen to his career now. What will happen in future to his remaining kidney and in the spot where his other kidney was. Nothing is certain with surgeries and organ removals.
The statement said he didn't do it on purpose. This man's athlete's licence must be revoked. >:
That's wild
Did doc just say basketball is a non contact sport? 😂😂😂
Poor guy...
Im Serbian, the Sudanese player was trying to get more space. I didn't look like that much force when he was swinging his elbow, nonetheless, quick recovery Borisa.
Imagine if he'd have taken an elbow from Karl Malone, Dikembe Mutombo or Shaquille O'Neal.
To create space, extend and hold your arm straight, not give a hard elbow. This was a flagrant foul
@@user-xk9dl8xw8l imo it didn't even look that hard. How do MMA fighters survive every hit to their head, stomach, leg? To me it looked like he wanted to create space and just defended with his arm, because Borisa jumped it hit his stomach.
💯
@@jalenmcintyre1660 Precisely because the Serbian had jumped, the Sudanese had already created space; and that's why I say the nudge is intentional,
If you look closely, you'll notice that the arm's range is wide, so the strike is strong; a blow like that can definitely cause a breach or fracture of the ribs
This why they target kidneys in boxing, those body shots hurt like hell.
ok i got hit upper left ribs to the left of spleen should i be worried? its been like 5 years and i dont have pain there anymore
that slowmo move shows that it's really an intentional elbow by sudan.

'non contact sport like basketball'
This is why a Boxer need a strong Core abdominal or abs Punching in a Side of the body is no joke
I wonder why this caused a kidney to be lost when Boxers/MMA fighters routinely get hit in that area by mostly more forceful hits.
Because he got hit while his arms were stretching up. When you fight, you are crouching thereby compressing your ribs and abs = more protection.
elbows are sharper than fists too
@@youtubegavemynameawaycuntbags And they tend to generate more force via kinetic energy.
Doctor fucked up for sure.. I'd be at ease if it happened in japan.. but unfortunately it didn't.
kidney injuries like this usually heal. This doc here has no idea what happened obviously, especially in light of having to have it removed. Even kidney arterial injuries will clot and heal (usually resulting in irreparable damage to the nephrons- renal infarction). But in even those cases, kidney removal is not done. My guess is there was tear to the kidney artery so bad, they couldn't stop the bleeding, so had to operate. They removed the kidney just for good measure, but wasn't necessary. You can have a dead kidney stay in you just fine. @@buckrogers8889
