    I broke my femur and severed my femoral artery when I was 12 years old. Luckily, the broken bone didn't break my skin or else I'd have bled out. 2 specialist surgeons were able to repair the femoral artery with part of an ankle vein, and set the bone with a metal rod. I spent a month in the hospital with machines removing blood from my leg before I was able to attempt walking again. Over a year of physical therapy before having the rod removed from my leg. Now, miraculously, my leg is still functioning and I live a normal life. Without incredible work from those surgeons, I could have died or lost my leg. This type of injury is no joke.

      It wasn’t a soccer injury, it was a sledding accident. Physical therapy was tough, it was almost all in water to reduce the strain on my leg. I still have some muscle tissue that never grew back properly and nerve damage in areas. Besides that though, there’s no lingering problems and I can function normally.

    My fear of breaks like this is why I quit skating. I grew up playing sports and so no matter what I tried I couldn't ignore the instinct to try to save my fall (good skaters will tell you that you need to accept it and learn to fall safely). Trying to save my fall kept putting me into sketchy positions like this and after a few lesser injuries including a nasty knee hyperextension, I had to be real with myself and admit I didn't love skating enough to risk it. This must be devastating for Dylan Reischman, I really hope he makes a healthy recovery. Wishing nothing but the best for him.

      I feel ya. I broke my left wrist and (compound) fractured both my radius and my ulna in my right arm skating when I was younger. Also broke two ribs in a trampoline mishap and fractured my jaw along with knocking a front tooth out in a BMX wreck. Didn't care much at the time, just figured it came with the "go big or go home" mindset my friends and I always employed. "No pain, no gain, right brah?!" Looking back on it now though... considering the niggling effects I'm getting more and more prone to feeling as I get older... probably wasn't worth it. However, as a slight consolation, my body is pretty good at predicting when it's going to rain now.

      I can tell you first hand.. July 15, so a little under 2 months ago, I suffered a spiral fracture to my right femur and it was the worst pain I ever felt in my entire life... I was born with rheumatoid arthritis so as a kid I experienced A LOT of it lol
      This injury is absolutely terrible though.. I wound up having a plate and screws surgically implanted and I got a gnarly gash that took 66 staples to seal up from the surgery. Looks cool.. the first 2 days are by far the worst

    • @julians7268
      @julians7268 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @jeffdeming8811 Dang! I have no idea how bad that was. I'm sorry to hear of your struggles and life-long walk with pain. I have Dercums Disease, and it's been difficult, but it hasn't had any influence on my bones or joints. I broke my radius and ulna in a skating fall, which sucked, but again, I can't hold a candle to your experience.
      I only brought my experiences up to let you know you're not alone. Your story, though terribly painful to hear, resonated with me. I know a little of what it's like, and I just appreciate that you shared what I am sure is just a small sanitized fraction of your pain and struggles. Best wishes.

    • @jeffdeming8811
      @jeffdeming8811 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thank you! I know everyone has their own struggles, and of course it's not about who is worse or who has hurt longer or how bad their experience was. We are all humans, we all hurt when wounded or injured. I have no idea what Decrums disease is but I'm certainly going to look it up to learn about it a bit.
      While my injury was indeed terrible, the bright side is I seem to be healing quite well, all things considered. As for the RA , that's just something I've adjusted to my whole life so while it's not a great quality of life, it's a quality of life I've become accustomed to, and half ass content with lol. Don't matter the cards we're dealt because you never know what you'll catch on the river 😀 poker reference lol
      As for your struggles, I am definitely sorry to hear that. No broken bones are ever kind to the body and painful to endure to an extent. I hope you're finding ways to cope with your disease as well my friend and thanks for sharing your story as well.

    I broke my femur in a motocycle accident, they put a rod on it, but the main problem i see is this: to put the rod, they have to open your knee and make a hole on the botton of the femur witch is basically the top part of the knee. My femur healed completely in tree months, but my knee was never the same, and the pain to start to bend it again was brutal. Honestly, if I was a atlete and had a broken femur I would prefer they put a plate and not a rod.

    Im wondering if there is less risk of blood vessel rupture in fractures as opposed to a ligament injury? I would have thought you would mention something about the blood supply as i thought the femur produces a lot of the bodys blood. Just curious 😊

    • @aj_5339
      @aj_5339 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That side of blood related complications is more long term and marrow in other bones can be converted to active blood producing marrow in times of need. The major blood related risk is the fractured bone hitting the femoral artery. It's more of a risk with bones since bone fragments are sharp but joint injuries can cause vessels to effectively be kinked off which is less dangerous from a bleeding perspective. Obviously can cause problems but it's usually tissue death from cut off blood supply and not overall death from bleeding

My outer ankle was touching my thigh and hip. My friend had also landed on me since I had him in a headlock. When I pushed him off of me I snapped to the other side like I was a mousetrap. I know it’s not sports related but you should do video on Mitch McConnel I’d love to hear a doctors perspective on what’s happening to him. It’s been documented twice now on camera it’s something we can’t ignore when these people are making laws we have to live by

    If someone is slamming you, you gotta just accept it and let it happen. You cannot give in to that instinct to post your arm or leg, you'll never be able to hold up your weight plus your opponent's weight plus negate the momentum of the slam with just an arm or leg.

    Any femur break is bad, but this a a BAD femur break. I hope the arteries and nerves are OK. This is likely something he will struggle with for the rest of his life. It's going to be a lot of work, but he can almost certainly get back to basic normal functioning. But it is a very difficult injury to completely recover from. Some level of chronic pain is not uncommon and the muscles and knee are never quite the same again.

    Ok this makes me cringe!!! Because I broke my femur not even 2 months ago . I was at a concert in London Ontario, Rock the park at Harris Park... it was raining that day and the ground was like a clay kind of muddy wet ground.. I slipped, did the splits, left leg went forward, right leg went back and my right ankle was turned so the indoor of my foot was facing the ground.. I came down directly on my right leg (I'm 246 lbs) and it snapped my femur / dislocated my knee at the same time. I blacked out from the pain of it . I woke up and emt Staff at the concert were trying to move me to a cart to take me up the the hil to get to an ambulance.. I had to hold my leg together using my pant legs... let me tell ya, this injury is no joke.. and it hurts like a mother effer
    I didn't have a rod inserted. I have a plate with screws all the way up my hip

    He will never be back to 100% after this IMO. Even if it only means he can't train as hard or has to use different methods to get around the injury, that's a massive difference in the top levels of sport... I hope he's an outlier, but odds are this has massive negative implications to his career...
