Absol definitely would fit as a Dark/Fairy, honestly. Though I am not sure if it has origins that go with that. Lockstin can probably figure it out, if he looks into it for whatever reason.

@@ljlacierda8358 Not really. Pokemon have come from all over the place in each update. Sure they like to have some things focused on the new region's RL counterpart but that doesn't stop them from expanding into other areas for part of a pokemon's inspiration. You didn't mention the fact that Morgrem learns a move literally called "False Surrender", in which the animation is literally Morgrem bowing to the opponent on all fours and catching them off-guard.
Incidentally, YES, there is a difference between a polearm and a halberd. A polearm is any weapon that consists of a head on a long shaft (usually not including normal axes and sometimes not counting spears). A halberd is /a/ polearm, consisting of an axehead, back spike or hook, and a spike or spearhead all as one piece. Other polearms include the Partizan (double bladed axe with a spear point between them, still used as the ceremonial weapon of the Swiss Guard at the Vatican), the Lochabar Axe (scottish, a broad axe blade that extends upward, with an entangling hook extending parallel to the back of the blade), Bardiche (Slavic, a huge axe blade extending upward and terminating in a point (instead of the spear point being directly on the shaft) as well as extending the lower edge until it meets the shaft again, where it is secured with a nail), as well as the glaive (long single edged blade like a giant kitchen knife on a stick) war scythe (the same, but with a concave edge, and straight, not right-angled), and the dozens of flavors of east asian "literally a curved sword on a pole" like the Naginata and various flowery-named dao varients.
Tbh I also feel like the line also has some roots in Japanese mythology. Morgrem seems to be also partially based on the hari onago, a hairy woman which also has the 'barbs' on its hair that it shares with Morgrem. Both also use the ol' bait-and-switch to hunt people, too. Grimmsnarl also feels like it's based on oni to me. Many of Grimmsnarl's name in different languages either have the word 'ogre' and 'demon' in it, with English being an outlier. The word 'oni' can be both translated into 'ogre' and 'demon'. Oni also typically have red/blue/green skin and wild hair, which fits Grimmsnarl pretty spot on. Grimmsnarl being an oni would also explain the line being all male, as oni are depicted as being only male.
I love the Grimmsnarl line so much, the first mischievous fairy that doesn’t look like a stereotypical fairy type pokémon. I really liked when you mentioned the hair being related to witchcraft and how that sentence alone immediately brought up hatterene to my attention. I really hope you do a video on the Hattena line, I pretty sure we’ll see some things crossing over with the Grimmsnarl line. Very Interesting!
10:46 also the whole ide of grimsnarl being strong and hairy might come from the story of Samson in the Tanach. A man blessed by God to be strong, but his powers come from his hair...
I'm so happy about this, Grimmsnarl has been my favorite Pokemon since I've seen it! Maybe you could do something based off the Hatenna line, as well. They also use their hair as witches, and I have a feeling they're partly based on the phrase "mad as a hatter" and the implications of such -- despite what Alice in Wonderland might make you believe, the phrase originally came from mercury poisoning the hatters in shops would get, which often includes MOOD SWINGS and nervousness. It can also include impairment of speech, alluding to why they want everything so quiet.
I remember aswell that somebody mentioned they be based on people who had sonoohobia....or even autism, since I can imagine them having so much psychic strength... That a simple crowd of people could put them into a panic.
The Impidimp line is one of my favorite Gen 8 Pokemon. When I first saw it, I definitely considered putting him on my team, then the evolutions were revealed and I was sold. Then G-Max Grimmsnarl was reveal, then I was sold on him
Disappointing that I’m not actually a sick magic creature thing edit: explains why since I’ve hit puberty I’ve had a strong urge to run away into the woods with some magic creatures and never come back 😎
When I finally caught one of these buggers my inner Shakespeare came out and insisted I call it Puck. Puck is now a giant hair chucking goblin. I like Puck ;u;
GRENDEL!!!!!! finally have a name for my Grimmsnarl I was having a hard time what to nickname mine to make it more meaningful. And for my Hatterene I can name it lady Macbeth so thanks for the inspiration
Well actually Puck might also be part of Morgrimm's origin as well. Surprise he didn't bring that up. Pucks were old mischievous nature gods that helped crops grow and were said to have red skin in some sources. Shakespeare took the name Puck, which at that time lost all it's relationship to the deities, and applied it to his fairy character as is VERY common in Celtic mythology to give Post Pagan characters links to magic (Basically all most all of King Arthur characters' names are taken from pagan deities. For example Arthur's name alluded to an old Welsh Bear cult and his wife Guinevere name literally means the White Goddess).
Might have been a refence to Mordred instead in the most popular versions of the Arthur story he's Morgan and Arthurs kid and the one who kills Arthur, As Morgan is well Le Fay or of the fae so would he also be one.
3:54 A side note for Morgrem in game, it can learn the move: False Surrender (Dark) - "The user pretends to bow its head, but then it stabs the target with its disheveled hair.".
Doby was the name of the Doberman TY Beanie Baby. That’s the first time I ever saw/heard that name. I was so confused when he said that lol. Edit: accidentally said Rottweiler when he’s clearly a Doberman lol.
Ohhhhhhh... This ties very well with it's counterpart, Hatterene: -totally witch reference, even in the pokedex she's called "the forest witch" -they both have a LOT of hair -both fairies that lives in the same forest, tying with that connection "troll - witch" that they have And I probably left out more details. What do you think?
Also the line could be based on the brothers Grimm tails, with grimmsnarl being spelt as Grimm instead of grim. Also gigantamax grimmsnarl being tall and having sort of twisted together strands of hair for the body, sort of looks like a beanstalk
It is like saying that ninjask and electrode are faster than the light only because they have more speed than pokémon faster than the light, but it isn't obviously how it works... And so every single pokémon with more than 130 base attack stat are stronger than machamp?
I just caught a Impidimp, I called it Gremlin :3 Also is me or Hattena and Impidimp are somewhat related? There are both based on fay creatures, there are Fairy type, one is male and the other female... Also there is a gypsy legend about how all diseases came from the unholy marriage of a fairy and a demon but I don't think it goes that deep.
7:15 long story short - Morgan practically hoped that seeing Arthur die in such a manner could've given Guinevere a heart attack. No joke. Even after she gets better and starts being friendly with Arthur, she still seems to dislike Guinevere as she's usually the one who reveals the whole Lancelot/Guinevere affair - which is hilarious because Guinevere once ratted Morgan out for having a relationship with another man. To be honest, I really don't see that much of a connection between Morgan Le Fay and morgrem. Zacian already kinda fills the role of Morgan Le Fay, Morgan Le Fay is much more powerful than green knight and if grimmsnarl is the green knight... It doesn't make any sense in my head.
6:15 that could aslo explain why the ben 10 alien jurry rig looks like a goblin of sorts with a talent for (no like our galvan b friend ) upgrading machines or building machines out of scrap
If anyone has watched Adventure Time the episode “Seventeen” has a lot more meaning now because of the “Green Knight” and I love that Edit:I’m also now convinced that Grimsnarl being the troll, swapped evolutions with what it could have been seeing how the they all start off looking so different
6:35 I was always thought to believe that the morg in morgrim was referencing Mordred “Mordred was depicted as Arthur's traitorous nephew and a legitimate son of King Lot in Geoffrey of Monmouth” as stayed the the character Wikipedia page.
I would have loved the third stage or the g max so much MORE If it was MUCH more similar to Aku Instead of this weird body builder type of shape He was more like Aku a tall menacing and towering literally towering figure I really hate how they started from impedip to end with a hairy body builder
The design of impidimp really reminded me of that time in Moomin Valley where moomintroll gets turned into an imp and Moomin is really popular in Japan and is Finnish/Swedish so you get the troll and gremlin ties too.
I’m surprised there was connection mentioned to Samson when you spoke about Grimmsnarl. Has power in his hair, hair covers Grimmsnarls muscles to make him stronger. No?
I wasn’t sure what to think of Impadimp, but the moment I saw Morgrem, I thought it looked like some Shakespherian forest creature who’s trying to trick me into taking a forbidden apple or something. Really specific, I know. Also, I’m glad they’re getting more creative with Fairy types. I’m already tired of seeing sugar/cake themed Fairies.
I'll be honest. Impidimp''s line are my favorite gen 8 Pokemon. I love the Dark/Fairy typing.. It seems to showcase Grimm's fary tales, how they start out innocent, but then take a darker, dramatic, tone.
4:03 There is a difference, all Halberds are Polearms but not all Polearms are Halberds Polearm is the catch-all term for large battlefield melee weapons, a Spear or Pike can be a Polearm, a Poleaxe is a Polearm, a Halberd is a Polearm, a Polehammer/Lucerne/Bec de Corbin (Crow's Beak) are all Polearms (Those 3 are all very similar weapons, having a Top Spike, a Hammerhead and a Back Spike), a Billhook is a Polearm, an argument could even be made for Zweihander's/Greatswords being Polearms
I recall there was a story about a man whose strength came from his hair and lost said strength after his lover cut his hair after being bribed by someone. So the whole "hair=muscles" thing could be based on that.
This line has grown on me. On first reveal, I was one of the Pitchfork wielding "It looks like a boringly stereotypical JRPG enemy like something from Dragon Quest." To you know "the Trickster side is great" to "oh my god I love these evolutions especially Morgrem". I would've liked it sooner if the more Fae folk lore stuff was more significantly obvious because I love that stuff.
A halberd is a specific type of polearm characterized as being longer than a pole axe having an axe head that continues up to a point and a spike on the opposite side and tend to be more ceremonial and fancy in comparison to their polearm brethren, in contrast a pole axe was specifically designed as a weapon of war featuring an axe head a separate spike or spikes and a blunt hammer, of course there are many variations of all polearms I’m just being general
It almost seems like when someone discovered that you could add a long pole to almost any weapon and it would both improve its strength in certain ways and make it safer to use by keeping the enemy further away from you, the trend exploded.
This line has becomed my favourite pokemon line of all time because of their looks, the "reveal" Impidimp had, and the attached I got to my Grimmsnarl in game. Now knowing about their origins makes me love them EVEN MORE.
So I avoided spoilers for this game and when I evolved my Grimmsnarl it immediately became my new favorite probably of all time. It's G-max form reminds my of the hollows from bleach and it's base design made me think of the giant heartless in kingdom hearts.
Love that the first Fairy/Dark type is full of folklore and has ties with Arthurian legends. Can't expect less from that type combo. That said I still think he looks like a Yu-Gi-Oh! monster.
I heard the changeling myth was used to comfort grieving parents whose children had died. The changeling itself was an elderly fairy creature on its death bed and the child it was swapped with was taken to live with and play with the fairies. so when the changeling died, the parents could still take comfort knowing their true child was still alive and happy. At least that's what I heard.
When I seen impidimp, it reminded me of the Moblin from L.o.Z.: Windwaker! That nose, colorful skin tones, evil magic enemies, classic fairy tale creature features, ect. It's has to be an origin too!
Came here from the hatterene episode. Loving the analysis on these! Up until now I'd watch one or two of these once in a while, but I think I'll try to catch up a bit more often.

So then what is Morgrem's hair?

Morg is a singular morgz
You know that Kijo (female oni) us exist too?
I love the Grimmsnarl line so much, the first mischievous fairy that doesn’t look like a stereotypical fairy type pokémon. I really liked when you mentioned the hair being related to witchcraft and how that sentence alone immediately brought up hatterene to my attention. I really hope you do a video on the Hattena line, I pretty sure we’ll see some things crossing over with the Grimmsnarl line. Very Interesting!

It also seems to be a deliberate counterpart to the Mismagius line, as their overall design is similiar and psychic and ghost are rivals.
yeah my opinion is the opposite of yours

When I finally caught one of these buggers my inner Shakespeare came out and insisted I call it Puck.
Puck is now a giant hair chucking goblin.
I like Puck ;u;
I named my Whimsicott in Pokémon Sun Puck. He's one of my favorites, too.
GRENDEL!!!!!! finally have a name for my Grimmsnarl I was having a hard time what to nickname mine to make it more meaningful. And for my Hatterene I can name it lady Macbeth so thanks for the inspiration
These names are grand~ I love them to bits!!

Ohhhhhhh... This ties very well with it's counterpart, Hatterene:
-totally witch reference, even in the pokedex she's called "the forest witch"
-they both have a LOT of hair
-both fairies that lives in the same forest, tying with that connection "troll - witch" that they have
And I probably left out more details.
What do you think?
Both got Gigantamaxes, evolve twice at the same Level...
Also the line could be based on the brothers Grimm tails, with grimmsnarl being spelt as Grimm instead of grim.
Also gigantamax grimmsnarl being tall and having sort of twisted together strands of hair for the body, sort of looks like a beanstalk
Pokedex: machamp < grimmsnarl
Machamp attack: 130
Grimmsnarl attack: 120
???
Must be type advantage
Donaldo Rios Grimmsnarl's types are neutral to Machamp though. Dark/Fairy together are neutral to Fighting.

@@TornaitSuperBird It takes neutral damage from Machamps stab but can do supereffective damage with its fairy stab.

Morgrem: an average psychopathic madman
Grimmsnarl: a very hairy troll

Also is me or Hattena and Impidimp are somewhat related? There are both based on fay creatures, there are Fairy type, one is male and the other female... Also there is a gypsy legend about how all diseases came from the unholy marriage of a fairy and a demon but I don't think it goes that deep.
A witch and her familiar
Also Hattrene's body is actually a small thing dangling in its fake hair body
Also ties into the whole hair is magic thing as Hattena's hair also grows as it evolves.
They are both in the Fairy Egg Group.
@@kingarthurii5001 That one is kinda obvious.

I just caught an Impidimp earlier! I named him Grendel after the Beowulf character!
Cool, though I dont think that fits grendel well. He was a giant. a son of kain. But I do like that people still remember that story

I'll be honest. Impidimp''s line are my favorite gen 8 Pokemon. I love the Dark/Fairy typing.. It seems to showcase Grimm's fary tales, how they start out innocent, but then take a darker, dramatic, tone.
4:03 There is a difference, all Halberds are Polearms but not all Polearms are Halberds
Polearm is the catch-all term for large battlefield melee weapons, a Spear or Pike can be a Polearm, a Poleaxe is a Polearm, a Halberd is a Polearm, a Polehammer/Lucerne/Bec de Corbin (Crow's Beak) are all Polearms (Those 3 are all very similar weapons, having a Top Spike, a Hammerhead and a Back Spike), a Billhook is a Polearm, an argument could even be made for Zweihander's/Greatswords being Polearms
Okay to clear this up. It's "Dobby" not "Dooby" from Harry Potter.

To you know "the Trickster side is great" to "oh my god I love these evolutions especially Morgrem". I would've liked it sooner if the more Fae folk lore stuff was more significantly obvious because I love that stuff.

9:45 Him "Stereotypically" Me: what do you mean Stereotypically, do you got a four finger in your basement.
I Loved and still love impidimp and his evolution líne i was totally right and the shiny is the Cherry on the top very awesome

7:03 Adventure Time - Fern disguised as the Knight, asked Finn to chop his head off due his 17th birthday
Grimmsnarl is literally David Bowie from Labyrinth.
When I seen impidimp, it reminded me of the Moblin from L.o.Z.: Windwaker! That nose, colorful skin tones, evil magic enemies, classic fairy tale creature features, ect. It's has to be an origin too!
More likely they were inspired by folk creatures like goblins as well. Look at the name. Also, in the classic games they remind me of bugbears.
