      @@ZakanaHachihaCBC the chain is super easy my man. Just activate and then resolve in reverse. I hate that you can activate more effects while the stack is resolving in MTG. It's needlessly complex.
      The missed timing thing is pathetically easy to figure out: "when... you can..." means that if ANYTHING happens after the first action, the second simply cannot happen because it's WHEN, not IF. If it doesn't say "you can", it's mandatory and is unaffected.

    • @encapturer

    • @hi-i-am-atan
      @hi-i-am-atan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      @@Patadude100 Nah, there's a _very_ major difference between them: players are still free to add to the stack after it begins to resolve, while the chain is _completely_ locked down once it's done being built. That's one of the big reasons why "missing the timing" is even possible: some effects can only be added to a chain the exact _moment_ their condition is fulfilled, but if that happens while a chain is already resolving, it's impossible to do so. It's also why if you summon a monster in the middle of a chain through a quick effect, you can't immediately use its negate effect on another card in the chain, unless the summon and negate are done in the exact same effect ( i.e. PSY-Frames ).

    Magic The Gathering has been doing keywords for a long time so they've learned the best ways to do them. For instance, cards with keywords will have reminder text printed next to them that explain what the keyword does, but not on cards with higher rarity. This is because you will see rare cards less often, and the lower rarity cards will tend to have less effects (thus more text space).
    Also, some of their evergreen keywords are quite intuitive. Creatures with 'Flying' can't be blocked by non-flying creatures. Creature's with 'First strike' will do their damage first. Etc.

    • @fikriirshade1132

      dont you think keyword system kinda limiting cards interaction, variation and future design?

    • @AlteredNova04
      @AlteredNova04 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Exactly. Most keywords are elegantly intuitive to the point that they only need to be explained once and then they are easy to remember even for new players. Protection from a color = can't be damaged or targeted by cards of that color. Lifelink = whenever it deals damage, you gain that much life. Fear = can only be blocked by black and artifact creatures (so stuff like robots and zombies, which logically cannot feel fear). Haste = can attack immediately (most creatures have to wait a turn after being summoned to attack). Trample = any extra damage this creature deals to a blocking creature still hits the opposing player (it basically runs the blocker over and is just slowed down by however tough that blocker was.)
      In my experience, memorizing keyword abilities is actually one of the easiest parts of learning how to play magic the gathering. It's learning how to use the stack (rules about when you can play different kinds of cards, such as during opponent's turn or "in response" to their spells) that really trips up new players.

    • @GuyNamedJordan
      @GuyNamedJordan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@fikriirshade1132 Not really. Keywords don't have to act as the card's whole ability if the designers don't want it to, especially for the more powerful cards. • @rueblie2627
      @rueblie2627 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Flying is not at all intuitive. You would never work out what it meant without explanation. Same is true of a lot of keywords, flying at least is on lots and lots of things so you get used to seeing it but the less common ones are pretty opaque. I still don’t really understand how first strike works even with the description anyway.

    • @Ballade90
      @Ballade90 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@rueblie2627 It's easy, the damage step in Magic is done in basically two phases: the first strike phase and the second strike phase, and by default all damage is assigned during the second strike phase, whereas if you have first strike you do your damage during the first strike phase and if you do enough damage to drop their health to 0 (or have deathtouch), you basically win that fight. Visualize it as a fist-fight where first strike is someone throwing a punch super quickly before getting hit compared to no first strike where two people punch each other at the same time. You only need to have it be explained once to get it due to how short the explanations are.
      Yugioh though is so complex that there aren't many instances in which a keyword system would help. Banish and pierce are a thing sure but there aren't too many repeating effects beyond archetype gimmicks and even then not all of them are done in the same way, Ghostricks and Maldoche have the same wording for their archetype specific cards but Blackwings don't, Endymion don't, Mythical Beast don't, so not every archetype would benefit from keywords and it would be limited to just archetypes as well which doesn't help due to basic redundancy (you aren't going to find a non-ghostrick that has the same effect as a ghostrick too often).

    The other reason for why is that they're having to make sure that they are being as specific as possible. The older cards weren't specific enough, and that often lead to severely broken effects. The extreme specifics make it so that people know exactly when, how, and why an effect can, will, and should be used. That doesn't justify the ridiculous amount of text, but it does help explain it a little bit. Although, too much text really is just as confusing as not enough.

    • @PrismariLaura
      @PrismariLaura 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      The problem is that lends to incredibly confusing gameplay.
      When rules are defined on a card-by-card basis, you need to pay incredible attention to every single card you spot.
      Cardgames with a consistent ruleset, like MtG, simplify this heavily by standardizing the effects. Every creature with only "Trample" as card text will behave exactly the same way. You still get weird interactions, of course, but it's much easier to parse 99% of the game due to an unified ruleset.

      (EX: Destruction Swordsman Fusion)
      and
      You can only *activate* this effect of "[card name]" once per turn.
      (EX: Spellbook of Secrets)
      and
      You can only *use 1* effect of "[card name]" per turn and *only once that turn.*
      (EX: Salamangreat Foxy)
      Having that distinction is important imo. "Use once per turn" can be negated in any way and you can't try to activate the card or effect again that turn. "Activate once per turn" can have its activation negated (e.g. Legendary Six Samurai - Shi En) and you can use it again that turn, but if you negate its effect (e.g. Magician's Navigation), you can't use it again that turn. And if you negate the activation or effect for "one effect per turn and only once that turn", they can use the other effect, as long as the monster's entire effect isn't blanket negated (e.g. Effect Veiler).
      Just shortening all of them to "Hard once per turn:" removes those differences, and could create a bunch of ruling mishaps.

    Once someone gets used to how Yugioh works and the gimmicks of each archetype, it starts to have a certain "flow" that is progressively easier to put together. Like many archetypes have shared effects or very similar ones in which if your read one, then you've read at least half or more portions of the other cards in the archetype. For example Unchained or Crystal Beasts.

    There’s a couple really big things too in addition to what you talked about:
    1) Cards used to only come with one effect (plus maybe a restriction). Now, a lot of cards come with 3 or 4 effects it seems.
    2) Because Konami has had issues with individual cards becoming too powerful, almost every single effect monster printed includes the sentence “you may only use the effect of ‘insert card name here’ once per turn.”
    Combine these two things and you get cards with multiple effects that all end in this “once per turn” clause.

If I played stuff like Pokémon, while it is a fun game, after a few years my cards are all worthless and I have to go make brand new decks. One of my Yugioh decks is about 8-9 years old from the 5Ds era, 3 series ago. I love it even if it’s hard to play now with the Link format. As a player of Yu-Gi-Oh since the beginning (and only recently getting good) I know a few things these days about card effects.
    1) Yes, Endymion is the record holder for longest card text in the game.
    2) There's a reason for effects being long. Often times they need to explain rulings that could even supercede the actual card game rules. Trap cards like Red Reboot for example, which say you can play it from your hand Quick Play style if you pay the cost, or cards called "hand traps" which are actually monsters with a discard effect, where you send the monster from your hand to the GY and activate an effect. Kuriboh is the classic example, but these days the card Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring is the cornerstone for these cards.
    3) Pendulum cards are the most obnoxious type for effects, since the good ones have more than one effect in the Pendulum zone and a long effect in the Monster zone.
    Yeah, so it's cool regardless

Like you said there's an incredible amount of text wasted on explaining that if you discard this card from your hand you get to do stuff, or trap cards that can be used quickplay style. Why not just have quick play traps or a keyword (Effect/Warrior/Tuner/Handtrap) and not have that issue anymore?
      90% of the card text being long is not because the effect is crazy,but because it explains the restrictions and triggers in excruciating detail. For example almost all Endymion cards use the same base effect of placing a spell counter and then removing a spell counter to cause an effect. So why not condense that whole Spell Counter garbage into an effect, call it Endymion and say something like Endymion 1(to remove 1 Spell Counter): Do stuff? That would immediately remove like 75% of the effect text of all Endymion monsters

    Sometimes Konami doesn't know what "simple" and "concise" mean, especially the TCG.
    Here are the things I am not satisfied with the TCG texts:
    - Effects are not point-form like the OCG, where I find the former format hard to see which effect(s) is "only once per turn/duel". It becomes problematic when it comes across cards with multiple effects. Also hard to tell which effects are conditions that cannot be negated.
    - The target-immunity wording has changed from "cannot be targeted by (opponent's) card effects" to "neither player can/your opponent cannot target this card with card effects", especially when the texts are lengthened from "Cannot be targeted or destroyed by card effects." to "Cannot be destroyed by card effects. Neither player can target this card with card effects." What's the point?
    -- It also leads to syntax problems such as Vennominaga's effect-immunity effect "Neither player can target this card with card effects, also it is unaffected by other cards and their effects." Why is the sentence part active and passive? Why not simplify to "Neither player can target _or affect_ this card with card effects"?
    - Why use "battle position cannot be changed, except by card effect" instead of "battle position cannot be changed _manually_"? Much simpler, isn't it?
    There are room for improvements for both OCG/TCG texts:
    - Monsters in Attack Position can only be face up, the "face-up" part is totally redundant.
    - There is currently no way to Synchro/Fusion/Xyz/Ritual/Link non-Synchro/Fusion/Xyz/Ritual/Link monsters. Just "If a ~Synchro/Fusion/Xyz/Ritual/Link~ monster is Synchro/Fusion/Xyz/Ritual/Link Summoned...", "Synchro/Fusion/Xyz/Ritual/Link Summon a ~Synchro/Fusion/Xyz/Ritual/Link~ monster" is good enough.
    - Why is the main effect of Mystic Mine is written as "If your opponent controls more monsters than you do, your opponent cannot activate monster effects or declare an attack. If you control more monsters than your opponent does, you cannot activate monster effects or declare an attack." instead of _"The player that controls more monsters cannot activate monster effects or declare attack"_?

    • @Always.Smarter

      i think most of this can be attributed to the fact that its all translated from the japanese, and therefore the english text isnt being written from scratch by writers who understand game design. instead its being translated by a localization team. unfortunately the tcg is often treated like an afterthought when compared to the ocg.

    I kind of understand where konami's coming from with choosing a wall of text over monikers for common effects, not because its "simpler" as they claim but because often the same effect can be worded slightly differently to cause a different result in the game. The ability for them to word freely gives the cards more room to have effects which make them feel like individuals, and a deck feels like some crazy word game where all these paragraphs are synergizing together. I get that the text is a massive barrier to entry to new players, but its the nuance of slightly different wordings and all these minor conditional aspects to various effects that makes every card, even bad ones, feel unique, and makes the game kind of an endless rabbit hole to dive through.

    • @EskChan19
      @EskChan19 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is also a downside because as a player you always have to read the text multiple times to really get these wording differences because sometimes a single word completely changes how the card actually works, if you miss timing or get to use it and so on. A more standardized pattern would make it more easily understandable for everyone.

    Trust me, it's not just the text that is out of control. The game's balance is completely unhinged. I remember back at my school they had a miniature tournament and me thinking it was a fun time, but not an avid super collector or anything, participated. I got into my first match, did my first turn, and then proceeded to have several "wtf??" moments in my head as my opponent took his turn using a card i don't quite remember but it was some female with alternate ways of saying blue (as all BEWD connected cards do) the effect was something along the lines of being able to special summon blue eyes, got multiples out on the field, and killed me in one go. Needless to say I didn't play much more after that

    Let me try to make a concerted effort to shorten Endimion's monster effect:
    ___________________________________________________________________________
    *Pendulum Effect:* Yeet 6 spell counters from the field and summon me from the Pendulum Zone. Count the number of cards that can have spell counters on them, yeet that number of cards off the field, then put that number of spell counters on me. Once per turn.
    *Monster Effect:* When a spell or trap is used, yeet any one thing you have with a spell counter to your hand, then destroy the activated spell/trap. Gimme any spell counters the yeeted card had. Can't touch me when I got spell counters, except through battle. If I die, you get a normal spell from deck.
