It was apparently because it did look like a Jack-o-Lantern and they didn't want to offend people who disliked Halloween (yeah, those weirdos. Imma be real with you, I think the Shadow Realm was a pretty clever idea. I mean, the premise of the show involves ancient Egyptian artifacts being unleashed, and shadow realm seems like the sort of “evil is not a toy” thing that makes sense for that. Is it still silly? Yes, but I feel like it at least better meshes with the context of the show than most edits

One of the greatest ironies of censorship is that often their solution to something is to replace it with something that isn’t as realistic, but is actually much more brutal. Replacing guns with lasers is a pretty common one too I have to admit, I don’t mind censoring like that at all. Ironically some stories have been improved by censorship such as this.
The Shadow Realm was a pretty good addition in that it streamlined a lot of things that were in the original. A lot of the times, people actually WERE just sent to another dimension/hell/a shadow world, etc. Like Marik with Mai, Bakura with the ghoul guys, some stuff with Pegasus, etc. So actually streamlining it all into one "Shadow Realm" actually made a lot of sense...except for the replacing death part.

The highlight of Crash Town for me is Crow and Jack coming to the twon at the end saying that they save the kids' dad, when he died offscreen and anyone could "see" that he DIED. And Crow just says it all nonchalantly just an afterthought.
I mean it existed in the Japanese anime, but it barely existed. For example, in his duel with panik, Yugi mind crushed him in the dub, but sent him to the shadow realm in the original
I remember near the end of the original show Yugi's grandpa recalls how he got the Millenium Puzzle. He's accompanied by 2 locals to help. But both of them fall into a pit from a trap. But rather than disappear into the darkness, a purple goop appears for a second and they disappear inside it. They really wanted to hammer home Shadow Realm, not death to absolutely everyone.
It makes sense in the situations that have magic or the supernatural involved. But the problem with the altered lines or scenes is where there is supernatural elements involved, the localization process made it that in some lines were made to sound like natural causes made issues. Spoilers ahead* In the Waking the Dragons arc, there is a scene where Alister lost his brother when they were young and caught in a war skirmish. It was clear that Mikey (Alister's younger brother) disappeared in the conflict, but in the localization Alister's line said that Mikey was taken by the military in the middle of the skirmish. Now I’m not sure how the original version handled it, but I think it is safe to say that Mikey passed away in the battle. That is what I took it as anyway. To add on, I believe that Dartz (the antagonist of the arc) kind of manipulated this event to have Alister join his side. At least that is what I recall. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Spoilers ahead* I haven’t watched anything in-depth past GX but in Season 2 of that show, Aster Phoenix has had a tragic event occur to him. Aster’s dad made Duel Monster cards, but this supernatural occurrence called the Light of Destruction, corrupted the Fathers friend. The friend snuck into the Phoenix household, and Aster’s father was “taken”, along with the Destiny Hero - Plasma (or Bloo-D). The Father was killed in the airing of the show in Japan, but was taken in the localization in the West (I’m not sure how it was handled in airings in other countries). So the Supernatural was involved, but the context was changed in the 4Kids localization. Season 3 of GX was very different, where Duel Monsters monsters were the real deal. So there were Harpy Ladies that grabbed some cast in an attempt to drop them from high in the air, but the students used their own monsters to aid them. Sorry this comment was long. I tend to talk about something that enjoy for a long time.
I was watching the dub on Netflix, and noticed something in Mai’s duel with Marik. Some reason they censor her monsters being restrained with dumb glowing bonds, and herself, but in early episodes they left Tea strapped in a chair alone. 4kids has some strange logic, and don’t know why they went so hard with the edits in that duel lol.
I laughed at how you described Spy-C Spy's changes. Also, English Dub literally cut an episode of Yugioh 5D's due to the portrayed death of 2 characters (one at the beginning and another at the end), which ALSO cut an entire duel AND (no spoilers) a large chunk of plot that had been important in establishing the reasons certain characters were as they were.
The Shadow Realm is an interesting case. They actually did mention sealing people away in torture dimensionS several times (notice that S at the end) in addition to just straight up killing people. The Shadow Realm unified the various supernatural Lament Configurations into a single concept, which seems to have influenced even the Japanese version of later series. As far as Mystic Tomato, I think they just wanted to make it "cooler".
I heard from a colleague that the mystic tomato redesign was an allusion to the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes cartoon, and as I remember, the original Japanese name of that card was Killer Tomato.

There is a reason I only read the yugioh manga or watched the anime with subtitles. I mean 4kids entirely removed the portion in marik's backstory where he savagely murders his father. Here's how Mystic Tomato was censored. Not only was the design changed for the US but so was the name. In Japan, Mystic Tomato is literally called "Killer Tomato".

Good for it. There's a lot to like about modern Yugioh, but the one thing I think is still missing is the mysticism of the original series. I highly reccommend 5Ds' Dark Signer Arc, Arc Cradle Arc, ZeXal's Barian Arc, Arc-V's first season, and even the current show VRAINS which is pretty good imo.

The card game was a potpourri of artistic inspirations since LOB, and the sequel shows embrace that, going for variety over artistic consistency. There's something for everyone in modeen YGO. Like super heroes? Elemental Hero is right up your alley. Cute stuff? Madolche, Fluffal and Deskbots. Are you a history buff? Then you'll LOVE D/Ds. Are you into beautiful artwork? Try Traptrix, Vylons, Aroma or Burning Abyss. You want to beat your opponent with literal living torture devices? There's Gimmick Puppets.

You know, its funny. I've come to realize that most kids dont even notice things like this UNTIL parents start freaking out about it. Which, in turn, makes the kids start to wonder why their parents are freaking out. This curiosity is ultimately what leads them to find out the meaning of symbols, the sexualized aspects behind body parts, why some words are bad etc.

Surprised you didn't mention Vampire Grace. A vampire who DRINKS BLOOD had her wine glass of blood edited to a glass of green sludge because someone, somewhere might mistake a vampire drinking blood for wine.
Fun fact: there was one time where they were unable to just replace the gun with a pointing finger. That time was a flashback episode where Solomon Muto was shot. Because this scene had story importance, the gun was instead replaced with a slingshot, and the gun firing sound was replaced with a lazily added rubber band stretching sound.
Hot take: the reasons why they did it might have been ridiculous, but some of the cards that were changed to avoid religion references are actually more interesting in their censored form. They just seem more creative and original without the cliché pentagrams, horns, and crosses. Give back the tiny horns tho
The algorythm tries to figure out what you're interested in and shape the ads towards you. Of course, it'll still randomly give you non-related ads, because they're paid to try to do so, but yeah.

I remember near the end of the original show Yugi's grandpa recalls how he got the Millenium Puzzle. He's accompanied by 2 locals to help. But both of them fall into a pit from a trap. But rather than disappear into the darkness, a purple goop appears for a second and they disappear inside it. They really wanted to hammer home Shadow Realm, not death to absolutely everyone.
The finger guns part in the original was hilarious.

I honestly believe the "Shadow Realm" made some sections make more sense. Granted the use of death and those coming back relied on Egyptian mythos.
Especially when the dead didn't always stay dead.
It makes sense in the situations that have magic or the supernatural involved. But the problem with the altered lines or scenes is where there is supernatural elements involved, the localization process made it that in some lines were made to sound like natural causes made issues.

In the Waking the Dragons arc, there is a scene where Alister lost his brother when they were young and caught in a war skirmish. It was clear that Mikey (Alister's younger brother) disappeared in the conflict, but in the localization Alister's line said that Mikey was taken by the military in the middle of the skirmish. Now I’m not sure how the original version handled it, but I think it is safe to say that Mikey passed away in the battle. That is what I took it as anyway. To add on, I believe that Dartz (the antagonist of the arc) kind of manipulated this event to have Alister join his side. At least that is what I recall. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

I haven’t watched anything in-depth past GX but in Season 2 of that show, Aster Phoenix has had a tragic event occur to him. Aster’s dad made Duel Monster cards, but this supernatural occurrence called the Light of Destruction, corrupted the Fathers friend. The friend snuck into the Phoenix household, and Aster’s father was “taken”, along with the Destiny Hero - Plasma (or Bloo-D). The Father was killed in the airing of the show in Japan, but was taken in the localization in the West (I’m not sure how it was handled in airings in other countries). So the Supernatural was involved, but the context was changed in the 4Kids localization.
Season 3 of GX was very different, where Duel Monsters monsters were the real deal. So there were Harpy Ladies that grabbed some cast in an attempt to drop them from high in the air, but the students used their own monsters to aid them.
Sorry this comment was long. I tend to talk about something that enjoy for a long time.
I was watching the dub on Netflix, and noticed something in Mai’s duel with Marik. Some reason they censor her monsters being restrained with dumb glowing bonds, and herself, but in early episodes they left Tea strapped in a chair alone. 4kids has some strange logic, and don’t know why they went so hard with the edits in that duel lol.
I laughed at how you described Spy-C Spy's changes.
Also, English Dub literally cut an episode of Yugioh 5D's due to the portrayed death of 2 characters (one at the beginning and another at the end), which ALSO cut an entire duel AND (no spoilers) a large chunk of plot that had been important in establishing the reasons certain characters were as they were.
My first though on the Spy-C-Spy was "Oh, Great... They turned the Sparkling Grape Juice into Home-brew Hard Liquor."

The Shadow Realm is an interesting case. They actually did mention sealing people away in torture dimensionS several times (notice that S at the end) in addition to just straight up killing people. The Shadow Realm unified the various supernatural Lament Configurations into a single concept, which seems to have influenced even the Japanese version of later series.
As far as Mystic Tomato, I think they just wanted to make it "cooler".

I heard from a colleague that the mystic tomato redesign was an allusion to the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes cartoon, and as I remember, the original Japanese name of that card was Killer Tomato.

There is a reason I only read the yugioh manga or watched the anime with subtitles. I mean 4kids entirely removed the portion in marik's backstory where he savagely murders his father. Yugioh was originally intended for teens and not children of 6+.

Good for it. There's a lot to like about modern Yugioh, but the one thing I think is still missing is the mysticism of the original series. I highly reccommend 5Ds' Dark Signer Arc, Arc Cradle Arc, ZeXal's Barian Arc, Arc-V's first season, and even the current show VRAINS which is pretty good imo.

You know, its funny. I've come to realize that most kids dont even notice things like this UNTIL parents start freaking out about it. Which, in turn, makes the kids start to wonder why their parents are freaking out. This curiosity is ultimately what leads them to find out the meaning of symbols, the sexualized aspects behind body parts, why some words are bad etc.

Fun fact: there was one time where they were unable to just replace the gun with a pointing finger. That time was a flashback episode where Solomon Muto was shot. Because this scene had story importance, the gun was instead replaced with a slingshot, and the gun firing sound was replaced with a lazily added rubber band stretching sound.

Hot take: the reasons why they did it might have been ridiculous, but some of the cards that were changed to avoid religion references are actually more interesting in their censored form. They just seem more creative and original without the cliché pentagrams, horns, and crosses.
