    I remember sitting in first row during an Alfred Brendel Liszt and Bach recital 44 years ago. I was merely 14 and that was my very first live concert ever. I had just started to learn the piano, so at first i sat there with baited breath, crossing my fingers for the maestro not to hit a wrong note. He didn't. He played the Italian Concerto, Benédiction de Dieu dans la solitude, B-A-C-H and a chorale. I remember sitting there in total awe, not understanding what was happening to me. Life has never been the same since. Thank you, vielen, vielen Dank, Maestro Brendel.

    I love Brendel's playing because he wasn't born into a musical family who prodded him into playing before he could walk, like many tiger moms. He did this all on his own. He admitted he's not a great sight-reader. He had to really work hard to achieve where he is.

      About a million years ago I heard a recital with Brendel playing late Schubert sonatas. It was an odd experience. Mr. Brendel walked on to the stage and was met by a Bosendorfer that seemed to be about 50 feet long. He sat down at the might beast and began to play and as he played the piano disappeared, then Brendel disappeared, and finally the stage and the audience disappeared. Each of us was left utterly alone with the towering genius and the sublime music of little Franz Schubert.

Music is my life, I mean it is my distraction, my hobby my world that without hearing I would have no pleasure of enjoying. Beethoven sadly lost his and even though he did he gave us the 9th symphony.

    Arguably the greatest pianist of my lifetime. This is what it called 'musicality'. The notes are not difficult. That's not the point.
    There are no theatrics. The music in his head is merely being translated by his fingers. A miracle, really. But just think of all the hard work that's gone into this phenomenon!

    • @maxfochtmann9576
      @maxfochtmann9576 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I would not go as far as that. But Brendel is in the tradition of Vienna. Schubert was borne and lived there. Just imagine Vienna at the early 19. Century, the horses and carriages rattling on the pavement, the sounds of nature in the woodland behind the town, Schubert walking in the street, men with high hats and so on. He put into notes, what he perceived around him.

    Wish I had heard Brendel live, a great player of Schubert and Beethoven especially. In the mid 1970s my father saw Brendel at an airport in Germany and asked for his autograph. The great pianist obliged and one of my siblings still has that autograph somewhere, quite spidery writing as I recall. My father remembered that Brendel did not have a strong handshake, hardly surprising given that his hands were probably insured for a vast sum and had to be treated with care. The Austrian has lived in London for decades and still gives lectures, as well as being a published author in three languages! The third Impromptu in this set is a particular favourite of mine.

      I was lucky enough to see him play twice, both at the BBC Proms: Beethoven's fourth concerto in 1998 and his fifth in 2004, which was Brendel's last live broadcast (so also his last Prom). I'll always remember how humble he seemd while accepting the audience's applause -- he seemed genuinely flattered by it and had something of a look of, "Yes, yes, that's very kind but all I did was play the piano a bit." And then he played the first of the Schubert Drei Klavierücke (D946) as an encore and it was over.

      I'm not that sure about it. I'm very convinced Wilhelm Furtwängler, Gerald Moore or Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau had at least an equally profound knowledge of Schubert (not Shubert)! I could also add others like Rubinstein and Wunderlich.
      Form the living pianists I even prefer Krystian Zimerman on the 8 Impromptus! This comes closer to Furtwängler's interpretation of Schubert's symphonies! :D
      Don't get me wrong I grew up with the interpretation of Schnabel, Edwin Fischer (Brendel's teacher) and Alfred Brendel. They are still excellent. But I always prefered Artur Rubinstein on the few impromptus he recorded! Until Krystian Zimerman's recording completely blew me away! :D

    I like in this video the opportunity to see clearly a Brendel in action, his playing on the keyboard and his simple demeanor that does not reveal the amazing mastery of his art. Every note he plays seems to be a case of perfect interpretation as perceived by my hearing.

    Là où certains interprètes surjouent Schubert pour épater la galerie (Zimerman), Brendel est d'une incroyable intégrité dans son jeu : chaque note, chaque nuance, chaque difficultés est abordé avec une pureté totale qui crée une émotion profonde. Brendel vit ses Impromptus de toute son âme avec un toucher subtil et sans cesse bouleversant. C'est non seulement la meilleure version de ses oeuvres célèbres mais encore un sommet de toute l'histoire de la musique. Merci pour ces trésors fabuleux.
