Brendel is a great Alchemist of Schubert‘s music
The comfort of his piano is unfathomable, and off the charts

Has always been one of my favorites. Here we concentrate so often on the performers such as here, but almost forgetting the brilliance of the composition, and Schubert was such as genius there.

Brendel became my favorite pianist as I was first introduced to the "winterreise" some 42 years ago. He lives the atmosphere of the songs and renders it through his intelligence and accurate playing.

I will never forget the first time I heard the exquisitely beautiful no. 4. My radio alarm woke me one morning with this piece, and it was like waking up in paradise! I went up to London the following weekend and bought the sheet music, but alas it is well beyond my playing ability. I found it is much more difficult than it sounds. Perhaps one day in Heaven! And isn't no.5 exhilarating! Thanks for posting!

I have had a few experiences of waking up into beautiful music that were truly magical. As I pass through that liminal space between dreams and consciousness the music seems to be coming from inside my mind, or just materializing out of pure creation... Then I wake up, understand again who I am and what music is, as such - but I am left with a really intimate and sublime memory of the piece...
As a musician, I wonder if this is a returning to "hearing" from a place of intellectual innocence, like in childhood, when music was most wondrous and mysterious to me...
Regardless, these pieces are beautiful and played exquisitely, and I am fully awake rn

and to thing schubert wrote music at such a fast pase. its almost certain he never heard much of his piano music more than once or twice after writing it as he just went on to writing the next work. and his compositions that required other instruments were mostly heard only in his mind. kept away from the world until first discovered 50+ yrs after his death.

Alfred has no facial expression so I cannot read his mind but he gives me the idea that he has been sent to the keyboard as punishment and that punishment is meted out by our Franz! but who wins? To me it is delightful!

This is for me the best interpretation on youtube (for the 3rd moment musical), the problem is the audio recording which is poor :/

Anyone know what year this was recorded? I have the Brendel recording on LP from 1972 and this version sounds quite close...

Isn't he singing along silently? Watching the floor of his mouth and upper neck move with the notes. Total immersion.

Not always silently. Brendel used to hum, not tunefully, and not really singing at all, but a sort of involuntary response of the soul to the music. So yes, a total immersion. One feels as if one is witnessing, and sharing in, a prolonged private epiphany. Deeply moving.

The way he plays Nr. 3 - Allegro Moderato in F Minor is incredible! Truly how it MUST be played, there is no arguing about that. Was this used in movies? Where do I know this melody from ....
