Schubert, the master of melody!
Piece No. 2 is one of the most deeply felt--if not THE most deeply felt--piece of solo piano music in classical music. And whoever criticizes or dismisses Alfred Brendel for being too "cerebral" has not seen him fighting back the tears in his performance of this piece, at around the 13 or 14 minute mark.
I don't understand the criticism of Brendel either - his performance of D946 is my absolute favourite. It's one of my most cherished albums in my collection.
Brendel: What a memory! Piece after piece, every note, every tempo, every forte and piano, every mood and feeling,! No other Schubert interpreter has it,

@@militaryandemergencyservic2376 which sections? Only in the first piece there existed a second Trio-part by the composer, who afterwards deleted it by himself.
@@gregorurban3222 if you listen carefully to that first one he not only doesn't play the beautiful bit that Schubert crossed out - but also shortens that section. Then there's the second klavierstuck - this he also shortens (in the c section).

This is absolutely true!! They belong to the best in music for the piano.
I totally agree with you, these belong to the masterpieces of the piano repertoire along with Schubert's last three Sonatas written a few months later. The fact that no less than Brahms himself edited (with typical modesty given his reverence for Schubert's work) these three pieces for their first publication (40 years after Schubert's death) means that among those it matters these works have been duly appreciated.
Schubert was a staple in the early twentieth century but dropped out of the repertoire later. I imagine he'll pop up again in the not-too-distant future; composers come and go (almost no one played Bach on the piano until Glenn Gould came along).
When I was getting my master's in musicology at Eastman in the '80s I also studied with a member of the piano faculty there. I wanted to work on some Schubert pieces, and my teacher said, "Well, I'll let you, but only because you're a musicology student."
Schubert in general is neglected, in my mind the most balanced composer
They are masterful works but very unpianistic and technically difficult.
I once heard a professional pianist say that she had not delvth into the music of Schubert yet because she had to prepare pianistically and psychologically for the immense incomparable genius of that man.
My favorite work by Schubert. A surprise that he finished these pieces six months before he dies. Well, I shouldn't be surprised, he is a genius that deserves to have better recognition than what he has now

Utterly stupendous performance! Best I've heard of Brendel. Three of the greatest piano "sonatas" ever written. #1 gorgeous key changes to minor heralding exposure to another world - did Schubert have premonition of his death only six months later? Haunting, beautiful, totally arresting. #2 fantastic lyricism - some of the best Schubert ever wrote, and he was noted as a superb lyrical writer. You can just float up and up on a melody that lifts so beautifully and never seems to end, and is still a little bit different every time you hear it. #3 very vigorous, uplifting, exciting even, but has that Schubert contrast in it too, about quieter, sadder moments. The D.946 set ranks with the very best of the best composers. Almost miraculous! Such a treat every time I hear it - particularly this rendition.
This is maybe my favorite piano piece, how it hasn't gotten much more attention is beyond me, this is so insightful, so impactful and emotional I am in awe every time I play it myself
It warms my heart to see perhaps my favorite pianist playing three of my favorite Schubert works. :)
God, this is marvelous. Here is an artist completely engaged with the music he is performing, to the point where witnessing the intimacy of his relationship with the composer feels like an intrusion.

Schiff and Sokolov are much better "pianist" than Brendel, but he has a better understanding of Schubert music as a whole, especially in his sonatas.
@@Persiansweetcat1 For me Sokolov is arguably the greatest pianist alive and performing. Sokolov plays everything very, very well, and many things astoundingly. From Baroque music to Prokofiev. His phrasing, understanding of the pieces' architecture, emotional and conceptual intelligence is just awe inspiring and jaw dropping. The word "pianist" (and even more so "Schubert pianist") is almost too narrow for him, I'd describe Sokolov as a superb musician who happens to play the piano flawlessly.
Brendel played only what he knew he could play well: Schubert, Beethoven, Liszt. No Bach, no Chopin, no impressionism or modern music. But what he could play well he played really, really well. For Schubert he remains my 'go-to' pianist, together with older pianists such as Kempff or Schnabel.
The music of the great Schubert - it's harmony and beauty in the highest degree. . .

Alfred Brendel - it's a long time ago I heard him play, maybe 30 years. We're spoiled with so many good pianists nowadays but what still remains: the records of this great pianist, being exceptionally well in command, showing full control of both the music as well as the instrument. People never talk about the amazing color and tonal resource in his playing .He phrases with his brain - no fingers .His voicings .Brendel like Soolov can say anything a true philosophical player.I hope we have him in som masterclasses his ideas are the best !

No. 2 in E-Flat remains one of my favorites of Schubert's works and no one like Brendel interprets Schubert so exquisitely.
If there is any composer who can stop me in my tracks with melody and harmony it's Schubert.

Armin Joos I totally agree with you. Recently I watched on TV a Sokolov recital (Berlin, Philharmonie - 2014). His D 946 execution was excellent, comparable to this one by Brendel.

Brendel second to none for the interpretation of Schubert.
I have listened to several pianists play this, my favorite of Schubert’s piano works. Alfred Brendel and Dame Mitsuko Uchida tie for first place, in my opinion, in performing Schubert’s D946. Yulianna Avdeeva- a close second. I know, we shouldn’t compare, but it’s inevitable since I’ve been trying to play this for so long.
Stunning and beautiful playing. It's just a shame he missed the repeats out. It would've made the performance about twenty minutes longer (bring it on!) and some of them are especially exquisitely written. I could listen to this all day every day - day and night!!!

Schubert has a lyrical inwardness that Beethoven could never achieve - and I love many of Beethoven's works, especially his final sonatas. But Schubert was a genius in his own right. It's time to stop seeing him always in the light of Beethoven when Schubert frequently transcends him. Yes, he admired Beethoven and was inspired by him, but then Beethoven was inspired by Mozart and taught by Hayden. They all were. Schubert was as unique as any of them.
Totally agree. I hate that Schubert is seen as somehow less successful version of Beethoven. While obviously Beethoven did more great things, Schubert, undoubtedly genius, would do even more had he lived longer. Remember, Beethoven was old when he finished some of his greatest works
@@Eliza-yd7fi Beethoven was never old, he died at 56 and was deeply deaf since 40 years old. We do not need to diminish Beethoven to admire Schubert: they both are great!

@@antoniosilva7083 that's pretty old. 56 means you've been composing seriously for 40 years. Anyways, I was in love with schubert when I wrote the comment, but I still think some of the public perception of certain artists are very influenced by luck.
Schubert does not transcend Beethoven, that ia a rude mistake, because Beethoven influence comes until our time: see Bartok or Schostakovitch and others composing now. I prefer to say that Schubert transcends himself and the influence he received from Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven.

Among the greatest pieces ever written for solo piano. But WHY GOD WHY does he not play the second part of No. 1. Him and Schiff both skip over it in their performances. It’s such an essential part of the piece. No. 1 is closer to around 13 minutes long with that missing section.

@@francescaguatteri8875 I first heard this piece played by French pianist Brigite Engerer, it remains my favourite interpretation to this day. i find it odd that a master like Brendel (and many others) don’t include the second half, it’s such an essential part of the piece.
Schubert himself removed that second part of the first piece, so even if you still like it to be played, I don’t think you can really fault Brendel for doing what the composer wanted.

Schubert removed that last section you refer to as someone else mentioned. I don’t think it adds anything to the work as it is normally played today. A truly special piece of music.

Brendel renders many compsers, but there is a specific link between Schubert and him.
the impromtus are more famous, but for me, this is by far more melodic and involving.

Wow. Such wonderful sounds. I think that Brendel sometimes takes the fast sections a bit faster than was intended. He took the #3, marked Allegro in a 2/4 time more like vivacci or even molto allegro. The #2 piece, first section is marked Allegretto. The second theme in that piece he changes speed and zooms along much faster than the first theme. The music does not indicate Schubert's desire for a faster pace. So, I question that choice on Brendel's part. I think that the second theme looses some of it inner beauty when it is propelled too fast. Harmonically, the themes are all over the place but they provide such sonic surprises. Really wonderful late Schubert work. Had he lived longer I would expect his experimentation to go even further, pushing the boundaries of the older classical styles much further down the road. These are not that easy to play and of course Brendel is up to the task.

Very Good! Better rhythm than Pollini anyway. The trouble is that Brendel gives the impression that he thinks he is the best... I think his singing tone could be better in places. Perhaps the recording?
