Freddie Mercury it's overrated, E.L.O. is way better. In the first place there is no Mercury on the song Waterfall, Jeff Lynne was inspired by Classical Music for this song. It has nothing to do with Freddie, also he was a rip-off from the way of singing of Roy Orbison, who was much better singer live than Freddie.
Compare this to the drum intro to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Reprise and you will find more than just a fleeting similarity. Rip-Off is what I'd call it.

This right here is why discovery is the best. ELO isn’t good cause of nostalgia, hell my dad was a kid when this stuff came out. ELO is good because it has catchy tunes and a distinct sound to it. No other artist has what ELO had. It’s amazing
That's why I love thise band and also blue oyster cult. I've only sung to both of these bands and motley cure 3 or more hours a night since 1980 and I've got some good recordings that I will just play and now one says it sucks. They don't even know my vocals are on the track all over her here was turn it up.
Same. I just found this vinyl from a flea market for a decent price. I was thrilled, because it was in such a good condition and usually they sell just finnhits and christian music in there. I'd like to get Out of the blue to my collection someday though
Vectrex, since I'm part of the ELO-fandom that has little fondness for this album (though this song isn't too bad), I'll fill you in. Before Discovery, ELO was known for string dominated rock, pop rock and pop. There was a great deal of experimentation on earlier albums, keeping the sound fresh. Though they experimented less on New World Record and Out of the Blue, both of which were much more commercial, the sound was still keeping, to some degree with previous material. Discovery marked a departure for a fluffier, ultra commercial sound. And to boot, ELO began to abandon the strings! I guess you could say that this was ELO's sell out album. Hope that helps!
@@kenklein9120 I understand the point, but I honestly don't think that ELO became "extremely commercialized" with their later 70s albums. If anything, they simply became more approachable for a wider audience, which IMHO doesn't in itself automatically mean that you're performing a total commercial sellout of your band. Let's face it: I love their early albums as well but outside of the hardcore progessive scene, nobody really cared for them at the time (Face The Music and maybe Eldorado being the only exceptions). Having experimental progrock-arrangements of "in the hall of the mountain king" is awesome if you're a fan of it, but it's simply not very relatable for the vast majority of rockfans. So I totally understand that they wanted to become more approachable. Not to say that I don't think that any of their later Material until the Secret Messages-stuff really sacrifices Quality for the sake of commercialized cash. Livin' Thing is a spectacular song, as are Mr. Blue Sky, Starlight, Tightrope, and The Diary of Horace Wimp. Besides, the statement that Discovery completely abandoned strings is IMO not true. Need Her Love, Horace Wimp, On The Run, Wishing and Midnight Blue all have great string-ensembles. Although I agree that Jeff basically firing Mick, Hugh and Melvyn was a real d*ck move.
It wasn't easy being an ELO fan in the 70's and 80's. You talk about rock snobbery and bias. those individuals just didn't have the ability to grasp deep genius.
For those arguing about this album being commercial and ordinary, yes, maybe this album was a more APPROACHABLE album for the audience. But, bloody hell!! I can't think of any group in 1979 using any of the techniques that this album uses! They were years ahead of everybody! Every ELO album is great and unique in it's own way and should be enjoyed!

…and then one night Jeff Lynne decided the album needed a proper rock and roll song on it before it was ready for release. He waited until everyone else had gone home, took the drum track from this song and then slowed it down and looped it. He then came up with a guitar riff and some lyrics, played all of the instruments he needed to finish the song, and et voilà, “Don’t Bring Me Down” became ELO’s biggest hit ever.
One of my first rock n roll albums on 8-track. I bought it for don't bring me down. Cut my teeth on this. I've got this on CD now it sounds so good no cracking and popping the way it was meant to sound. No vinyl sounded better
