    The larger-size Zippo handwarmers are a very old design. I'm 80, and we had them when we were kids. They can be extinguished simply by removing and setting aside the catalytic burners, but pliers or some other hand-protection is needed to do that without pain. Also, we discovered that by carrying them in a belted-wrap, thin-pouch-pocket of some kind to protect the skin from excessive heat, carrying one or two of them positioned over one or both of the kidney areas in the back, they served to add considerable warmth to the whole body, since our blood flows through our kidneys as well. It works surprisingly well to provide an overall feeling of warm comfort. However the fingers and toes are not much warmed that way. The petroleum-based, smelly, Zippo-fluid is also a bit of a bummer.

      My father used zippo warmers and I remember them from 60 years ago. Smokers carried zippo lighters and fuel already so no overhead carrying a handwarmer.

      Interesting.

    • @woowoo8801
      @woowoo8801 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sucks when they get turned upside down though because the fuel soaks the catalyst on the top and puts it out.

    • @CanItAlready
      @CanItAlready ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I remove the catalytic burner by using the cap to pin it down to a surface, usually on top of the little bag, and then just pull the body away from it. Then I just scoop the burner into the cap and put that back on the body. There's enough space inside the cap for the burner to remain separate from the body.

    The Zippo hand warmer is a good choice for what it's intended for, but if want the best hand warmer hands down you must wrap your hands on a Peacock handwarmer made by Hankin. Hankin is a Japanese company that invented the hand warmer in 1923. Zippo came out with their version in 1953. The Peacock hand warmer runs for an incredible 24 hours, broken up into 6-hour intervals and runs on lighter fluid. It has a better filling system then Zippo and does not suffer from cold shock. I paid $15 for mine and could not be happier with my purchase. The Hankin hand warmer has a better and softer velour bag and allows you to wear the hand warmer around your neck underneath your jacket or sweater. A prized commodity for sure as the price has doubled in the last year and may be hard to find. Good video as always.

    I really like how everything you promote has a good reason behind it. You never promote junk. This tells me that you don't always get the best affiliate payout (if any at all). I'm a new subscriber but I have yet to see anyone with your quality of work. I think the extras such as the décor you switch out in the back also give a really nice touch and feel to your production. Best of all, you seem to have fun and really enjoy what you do. Many thanks from a traveling globetrotter (between the US, Japan, and Switzerland).

    To turn the Zippo warmer off, put it in a Ziploc bag and close the seal. When the oxygen inside is used up, the combustion/heater process stops. You also now have a waterproof storage container to store the hand warmer until it is needed again. The fuel will evaporate in a week or two just like normal zippos so this is more of a short term solution as long term you will still need to carry zippo fuel.

    I've got a couple of Zippo petrol based pocket warmers. They're good but fiddly to use and only practical if you're outside in the cold for several hours as they remain constantly on.
    I've started using a rechargeable battery hand warmer instead. It can be switched on and off when you need it and has different temperature settings so it's much more practical. It can also double up as a powerbank.

  • @Keen_Edge
    @Keen_Edge ปีที่แล้ว +1

    11:42 I've found that if you want to "turn off" the Zippo hand warmer, you can grab a pair of pliers and remove that little catalytic converter which will stop the heating process. It's not ideal as I'm sure not everyone carries pliers with them all the time like I do, but it's an option for when you get home I guess. Just make sure to find a heat resistant place to place that converter as it cools down, as it's ridiculously hot.

  • @zacdredge3859

    11:19 It may not get hotter but a larger body means more thermal mass so it should retain that heat more effectively.

But first: I really enjoyed your 2023 videos, and concerning your EDC pouch update, that also included some interesting ideas (have a prepaid credit card with you, simple and smart!) I got aware, how much brain work you are investing: from thinking about situations, you want to be prepared for to how you want to face them, i. e. finding the most appropriate items, and finally making them fit into the pouch. Respect!

    How would you compare the force required to deploy the blade on the Elko with the blade/tools on the Victorinox Alox Pioneer X?

    • @JonGadget
      @JonGadget  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, hard to compare as the Pioneer X is twice as large! The tension is high on both but the Elko is easier.

    I have a Victorinox question I’m hoping someone hear can answer for me. I have a huntsman and I’m wondering if I screwed up my reamer. I very foolishly, late at night and half awake, opened tools on both sides to send my friend a picture. The reamer now has some significant movement. Not side to side play but it goes towards closing the closing position very easily. I can’t remember if it was like that before, does anyone know if this is normal or if I did some damage to it:(? Thanks in advance. P.s: I love this channel

      depends if you think you will use the in-body lights of the A8 - if so I would go for that (it's my EDC) if not A3 Pro is fine but make sure you go for Gen4 with USB-C

    That side button style on the Fenix gets bumped way too easily when stowed away in pouch or pocket. I’ll never buy another side button that isn’t recessed.

    Can't say I like the fidget pry bar, it just feels a little bit too much like edc collector tat. The bit bar on the other had does look like a decent design, if a little pricey.

    historically speaking 21700 come in 4000mAh. never have i ever seen a 5000mAh cell, and i worked selling vapes (where the absolute best batteries are a must) and i would have known of 5k batteries. even if by some miracle they crammed more in those cells, they would not last more than 6 months with constant use due to overheating.
    realistically, samsung cells with 4000 mAh are your best bet for longevity and performance.
    to whoever doesn't agree with me, fight me.😂

    I don't get equating pounds to dollars in your price info. There's a 25% surcharge for the same amount in dollars. It's not nothing. I think you should quote both prices if you want but can't say will cost 100 pounds or dollars.

  • @Castleknight
    @Castleknight ปีที่แล้ว

    No way I'm paying $120 for the Big Idea Design bit bar. That's a total ripoff. I found a Steelman version for $26! No go on the Zippo hand warmer - too old school: messy & smelly. I think you're better off getting one of those rechargable electric hand warmers. Ti Bar for $80 - no; there are cheaper and better pry bars on the market.

    Am I the only person who would like to do away with the strobe function? I recognize those who have tactical delusions, but really!!! What an irritation to have to cycle past that thing! The Fenix looks quite good beyond that. I would rather have a moonlight mode than strobe. But I can give that up for the long life at 50 lumens. So why not just skip the strobe, too?
