AMG EQE 53: Brilliant EV. Terrible AMG. //Full Review

  • Can #AMG convince us with this 687BHP Electric Midsize Sedan?! Welcome back to RBR guys and to the second #MercedesAMG of this new electric Era, based on the Mercedes Benz EQE sedan. Today I’ll be talking about both the EQE 53 4Matic+ and EQE 43 4matic.
    Much like the normal EQE, it’s extremely similar to it’s EQS bigger Cousin. Both in design, interior and power components. Both are aimed squarely at the Tesla Model S and 3, a lot of that explains the uninspiring design choices of the one-bow design.
    In terms of AMG specifics - the car features two AMG-specific electric motors - one on each axle. Both have been modified with adapted windings and laminations, higher currents and a specific AMG inverter - but still based on the Mercedes unit.
    The rear one is larger - with a six phase motor, allowing for more power. Also lots of AMG specific thermal measures most notably a water lance - all done to allow for more power for the 43 and 53.
    The EQE 53 has a slightly larger motor inside the rear unit, and changes in both to allow higher speed vs the 43. Otherwise, hardware very similar in both.
    The battery is an interesting point. It’s a 90.6 kw battery which is smaller than the EQS, and more akin to Taycan size. Thus the range is actually very similar too - 240miles quoted to me on full charge, which is the same as my Taycan 4S. Battery behaves differently depending on if you’re looking to conserve or drive faster. So where are these aerodynamic benefits of the one-now design that Mercedes keep using as justification for the design? I’m not convinced.
    As for power, the EQE 43 has a healthy 476BHP, 858NM and a 0-60 of 4.2 seconds. EQE 53 is much more powerful at 626BHP but a further 687BHP on limited overboost with a huge 950/1000NM. Launch is officially 3.3 or 3.5 seconds - but you’ll see me test it much faster.
    Also - Different driving modes give different output, with comfort having the least.
    The power goes to 43’s 4matic and 53’s 4matic+ all wheel drive - this is confusing because normally the plus please totally variable, but here both are totally variable. The plus now means… 53 is more dynamic? I don’t get it.
    Chassis wise, we have AMG ride control plus with adaptive dampening. Basically the same as the EQS and GT 4 door - 4 link front and multi link rear, and those pressure limiting valves that make the adaptive even more accurate. AMG-specific wheel carriers, suspension links and anti-roll bars etc and a useful Rear axle steering 3.6 degrees. Brakes have the AMG I-booster marries recuperation with either steels or AMG ceramics.
    Finally a big topic for today is AMG sound experience - for this they have hardware, including special speakers, a bass actuator and a sound generator +Two types of authentic or performance which comes with dynamic plus pack! I’ll test both on idle and on the move.
    Weight is an issue, 43 is a porky 2525KG, and the 53 is 2655KG!! When do you think there’s only about 100 kg in between that and the EQS, that’s not much of a mid-level sedan. Also consider the weight of Porsche’s taycan turbo S is only 2380… and it’s faster and better looking; oh dear.
    Today I’ll also show you a bunch of different specs, and then more crucially talk about AMG’s true electric goals, shown by the Vision AMG Concept : along with my render of what a real production version could look like!
    My overarching question today is: can the EQE 53 replace both your electric car and something like the E63?? Is it AMG enough to pull this off?
    Up next on on RBR is the new C43 Wagon, and the BMW M240i review and MUCH MUCH More!! Subscribe to support us and see it first. :)

    Mercedes lent me a EQE350 while my C205 C63S coupe was in for a service. It felt like going from the past to the future in one step, it handled and rode incredibly well, the suspension was soft and supple while still taking corners at speed. The all digital dash with the big central screen was incredible compared to my own car. I really missed the C63S and loved the noise and vibration when I got it back but I could live with one of these (providing I can keep the V8).

    10:58: I believe the reason for EQE AMG being so similar to EQE is that at the moment they will not have the scale for the EQE to make it worth to create a much different AMG. The other thing is that EQE is already optimized for aerodynamics. They do not want to make it worse, since range is important.

Graphics are interesting, camera angles just right, the drive was well done, drone shots were nice; it was just a great review. I also agree with everything you said about the car except for the view of the vehicle from the rear. The light bar going across the back is a great idea. Mercedes is still under the impression that EVs need to look frumpy like something your grandmother wants to drive. But an AMG model that looks like this is absurd. The ONLY reason I would get this car is for the hyper screen, but you can't get it in the 43 model which is down right nasty of Mercedes to do. The exterior is a deal breaker. Looks like the Tesla Model S is still the best choice. hopefully the EQE AMG will improve in 3 years.

    They did many things with the car that is counterproductive to the range (no heat pump, heavy materials etc.) so the EQE having this shape because of aero efficiency & range is bs, especially if we look at the EQXX which is far better looking and has better aero, i start believing Gorden Wagener thinks this “one bow” design genuinely looks good. Never been a fan of Gorden Wagener anyways, had some good designs over the past years but generally more screw ups than good designs. He’ll make Mercedes loose millions if not billions in the EV market if he keeps up this design, imo Mercedes should have warned him when he came up with the current S-class and sacked him when he came up with the EQS’ design.

    • @tbn22
      @tbn22 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At this point, Gorden Wagener is caught up in his own hubris. He believes that everything he makes is just wisdom and forward-looking, often without considering the opinions of the people that may actually buy and use these things + he doesn't handle criticism very well. I once had him delete my reply to his personal IG, for saying that I didn't like the design of the EQS.

      @@tbn22 yea im no designer but there are a couple of design philosophies from him that bugged me like him saying: 'If you like it, take a line off. If you still like it, take another line off'."...well my friend that's how we ended up with designs and rear ends looking like a shapeless sack. Car designers just like fashion designers live in their own bubble and sometimes they tend to get more and more extreme with their designs as they always look for the next big thing, just like fashion designers designing ugly cloths for the catwalk that no one ever will wear, designers need to get slapped back into reality every once in a while imo, which Mercedes failed to do.

    • @tbn22
      @tbn22 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AOTanoos22 I love the whole Mercedes lineup that was introduced with the W222 S-Class. Those cars are such a joy to experience, both as an onlooker observing one pass by, and also for the guy driving one. I get that they want to make the car as aerodynamic as possible, but as you said, they use no heat pump, and the cars are heavy as a mountain range. Also, as Raz explained, the soap bar design doesn't really help at all, when the range is similar to the Taycan (one of the least efficient EVs in terms of range).
      It is very very clear that these radically different designs are an exercise in "destroying the old for the new". A world where individualism is no longer allowed, and where everything has to look and feel the same. If the car is "up for questioning", as everything is these days, then why is it always the radical and challenging ideas that receive respectful consideration, while the conservative and familiar get labelled as "old and outdated". It is difficult to have this discussion when it gets so blatantly one-sided.
      Because of this, and because of the encounter I experienced, I've lost a lot of respect for Gorden Wagener. The guy needs a reality check. I have not seen any review, video or article about these two models that don't mention how ugly they look.

    Great review - I like that you do have good things to say without harping 100% on the exterior design. I agree it could be better. If you’ve sat in a Taycan, it’s pretty obvious how much interior cabin space suffers due to its design. It looks great and performs well, but the EQE would be better as a daily driver. So it’s depending on your priorities. My personal opinion is that the EQS looks great driving on the road next to other cars - it’s different and has a “spaceship” look to it. Some people like that.

Look at the AMG GT 4 door, you can order a GT43 to look like a GT63. Now MB has taken the trend to an EQE 53 that looks like Standard EQE. Comments from the younger crowd are posting that it’s not what it looks like, it’s what it does that counts. Well, let’s see if they will shell out the money and buy one. I say, vote with your wallet. I for one who owned 3 of the V8 CLS63s, I can assure you my money is no longer with AMG since the C43 was introduced and I will certainly pass on the current offerings, ok maybe a G63 I would go for honestly but that’s it.

    I don't like the way it looks and I despise the hyperscreen (which, as you said, is just 3 different screens under one glass cover rather than one dashboard-shaped screen Merc wants you to think it is). Man, this is just another excuse to get a Taycan instead.

    Mercedes isn't competing against itself! They are competing against other OEMs that stated their cars are in the luxury lines with fit/finish/etc. and clearly they are not for the same price...

    Not only do they look lackluster but the dash is TOO high in every MB electric car. Without an engine up front there is no reason you have to look up and over the intermant cluster and dash. Almost every other EV on the market has better forward visibility.

    I have the same feeling about AMG EQE - the design is bland (trying to be kind here), it doesn't feel like an AMG. Take a away the badges you can say it's a generic Japanese or Korean family sedan. Very disappointing. 🤷‍♂️

    Mercedes and AMG design team need to re-think and reimagine their interior design. You can pin point from which periods previous/old Mercedes car are from just by looking at the interior design, the steering wheel, the buttons and screens. Why does an EV, that has been developed for getting the longest range as possible have 3 digital screens that's using electricity for selecting things that could've had buttons, switches and knobs instead that are tactile and safer to use whilst driving.. you dont need to look down/where you are touching and pressing, you can feel it with your finger tips.. Mercedes and AMG are going absolutely in the wrong direction.
