Mercedes EQE 53 AMG in-depth review & track test! Rival to Tesla Model S Plaid and Porsche Taycan?

- You don't see many of these around. It's been flying under the radar a little bit I think but it's a tech-packed Electric Luxury Saloon car with true AMG credentials. Does it manage to combine luxury with true Sporting ability and even manage the odd track day? It's a hard task to achieve both but it's what this car does really rather well.
Now that Tesla Model S Plaid is Left Hand Drive only, what else might you consider buying. Perhaps a Porsche Taycan. I love a Taycan and that really does match smooth riding true GT capabilities but is still track-ready and great for a real driving enthusiast.
The EQE may be a little thirsty (tell me an AMG which isn't!) but it really does bring together German Luxury Electric Motoring with tons of great gadgets and specification including;
Augmented reality navigation
Digital headlights with 1 MILLION pixels !
4 wheel steering
Air suspension
Adaptive dampers
Massage seats
and all the ambient lights you could want..!
A brilliant, if expensive, performance EV Electric Vehicle!
Hope you enjoy the video

I am not a fan of Mercedes, but it looks like they have pulled out all the stops to make this stand out from the crowd! Great video squire 👍
Wow, what a comprehensive review. I can only imagine how much effort and time went into this video. Amazing that you manage this while running a busy business! I wasn't even deafened with any music, my volume control was not touched! Well done Gints!
Terrific that Mercedes has managed to push ahead in the luxury EV sector. This is a positive indicator for the German's future in the market, which can only be healthy for us Europeans.
Richard this car is phenomenal,Tesla so need to adopt these headlights,Great video guys👍😉💪
This Channel is always very interesting and informative in the EV/BEV segment...
Really enjoyed this long form review. Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great production quality, new mics? Really appreciate your effort at improving content and production all the time. Buttttt did notice the echoeyness in the sum-up section in the main bit of the showroom. Don't know if that can be reduced in editing maybe, wouldn't mention it on another channel but seeing as you have an eye / ear for detail!
Off down the shops to buy a lotto ticket. Thanks for the review.
Great review, very objective as always. Car looks nice in black with those wheels. Sounds like this is a very good everyday car. ❤
You guys got some new kit? The visuals look even better than normal, very professional. Nice car but without Super Chargers 😉
Great review and having ended up with an EQC by default back in 2021 (pre Model Y, and iPace lease cost was too high) I have to say that the Mercedes qualities have grown on me, and even in base AMG Line trim it feels comfortable, luxurious and welcoming, combined with a smooth and quiet drive experience. The EQC is an even lower max charge rate at 110kW, but again it is a relatively flat curve which in general is a better match to available charging infrastructure.
The Adaptive Cruise Control sounds similar to the one in the Audi E-tron. It automatically adjusts to the speed limit. If you intervene (eg accelerate or brake), it will automatically re-engage when you let go of the accelerator
They literally built a cheap DLP projector into the headlights - exactly the same 30+ year old micro-mirror technology.
Also: ONE MILLION Pixels happens to be more or less exactly 1280*768 pixels. What we used to call "HD-ready" and what you basically can't give away anymore as a projector.
Lol, well said
Fascinating. Do you drive a BMW? Angry little pup! 😂
@@freddydad1bum well & truly licked. Best brush your teeth now.
@In-Rainbows own one do you?🤣🤣
Great review, great car.
Did I miss it, or did you not say the price of this car?
Looks like OTR £114,750!
Great video! This is the first EV which could pull me away from my Tesla, glad to hear the AutoPilot (or their version) sounds good/better as that's something I must have on a next car! This car looks ace
Hi Richard, you didn't compare the cost of this car to the others. I am guessing it will be expensive and do Mercedes expect owners to still have a yearly service like Porsche do?
Words you never want to hear at Combe - “braking over the crest” 😂
Really informative video, the press were generally fairly underwhelmed but it’s nice to get the perspective of a normal car enthusiast.
Very impressive vechile
You didn't mention the cost, I doubt it's in many peoples reach.
Great video and review.😎
Well out of my price point, thanks @keithcarney1097.
Does WLTP mileage mean We Like To Pretend Mileage ?
Lovely looking car, love the lighting package both inside and out!
The interior bleeds luxury, when you're in it!
Another great video!
Cars are a funny thing, had a Mercedes ML, fantastic car…. But I am more fond of the Ford Maverick I had before it, not a sophisticated car but it won my heart, always talk fondly of the Ford, maybe the Mercedes was as good as you expect, the Ford over delivered, I love my EV journey with my Tesla Y, it really is just so easy, done 2 trips to the alps (winter and summer) and driven to Menorca twice, it’s just so easy, what can I say about superchargers… brilliant, was driving back across France, had put in our charge stop, but suddenly Tessy informed me that we would skip the one I had planned on going to and re routed me to the next just a bit further up the road because the one I had planned was getting busy and the one it chose was empty, and bonus was it was in a Decathlon carpark, so did a bit of shopping. Pretty much 95% of charging at home with the aid of my solar, I really don’t think I would buy anything else.
Having said that, Total fuel stations in France are rebranding to Total Energies (well on the motorways) and they are installing fast chargers on there sites
Mercedes ❤ best Elektric Car
I couldn’t live with the saloon boot. I tested the EQE SUV, which is basically this car but with more space, and it didn’t feel special enough.
Went for a BMW iX ⚡️👍🏻
Silly price with an even sillier options list I suspect, and as usual a big battery instead of efficiency. I bet the headlights were an option
Those purple neon lights are gaudy, but perhaps you can turn them off?
That looks great from a M3P driver
Good looking car, but just love the Audi GT
I am not a fan of electric cars, but I love Mercedes ❤️ this car just might swerve me over.
Which EV's have you actually driven???
@wilh4339 Tesla model 3, Nissan Ariya, VW ID3. I like the sound of my engine.
@wilh4339 But I drove the Mercedes after I saw this video, and I loved it.
I was expecting you to say 300+. Having said that, others aspects of a car influence my decisions more than range and economy. I do think this is a good spec and colour. I'm sure others specs may not look as good.
A dark road at night… them headlights better be good 😂😂
Does the car have the new axial flux motors?
Don’t think so. Due on the new 63’s. Great acquisition by Mercedes. I have been working with them as a supplier for a few years and very good motors.
Interesting intro music and taking one second to a press a button is nothing but other than that loved the review although the price is ridiculous given what else you could get.
Great camera work, but that paintwork... does not look like a premium car paint finish!
Paint is good. Somehow that camera shot made it look flakey but it’s as good as it gets these days.
Model 3 Performance vs Mercedes EQE 53 AMG, who wins on range, top speed ,1/4 mile drag and on circuit track?
New 3p wins for range (older versions pre2021 wouldnt) and top speed (limiters) but EQE would win 1/4 mile and accelerates harder at higher speeds
One’s built properly by a company that knows how to build cars. There is no comparison.
Hi Richard, impressive car, by the looks of it, positioned quite a bit above the face lifted Tesla model S.
With less space than a Model 3. Brilliant positioning.
And slower than Model S LR 🥱
@@NO3V Interior space is only one of the metrics to judge a car by, and in upper segment it is not the most important one.
@@RonnyWullschleger Nobody cares if the model S is faster by a minuscule margin. The Mercedes trumps any competitor with it's inherent quality, it's driving comfort and it's superior material qualities and fit and finish.
Lol
To put it very simple. It dosen’t look like a Mercedes. They should just have electrified the current ice e-class, despite a little shorter range due to not so good CW value.
Not much not to like with this one. By the way, your showroom standard...I have never seen such a supremely well polished car.
And the price is?
you're on the internet. you do realize this, right?
Emma Chisit?
What’s the price
If you need to ask……….. 🤔🤣
❤
Infotainment system still looks inspired by Windows Vista
Tesla’s only please Richard 🥺
Nice car - but way too tacky gadgety for me and price lol. Interesting vlog tho. Best wishes
How much is it?
£111,000
The EQE350+ has the same battery but 2wd and has substantially better range. Shame they only released it at the launch of the car.
Thats the one i want. Still enough power but so much more efficiency. An EV for me is all about that and comfort. Maybe i can afford one of those used in lets say 5 years haha.
How much ? 🤔
quite a lot, let's just leave it at that 😂
Chines ?
cheers mate
i like the car, just hate the dash
With that music in the beginning I was expecting a Indian curry to turn up :)
I tested it and for me it was not convincing for the price.
Well considering that one can easily buy an EQS after 1 yrs for less than 75000€ and less than 25000km, and the EQE is realisticlaly with some specs at 100.000€ new, no thanks.
I would not go for EQS (nor Model S which for me personally is not the best buck for the money, while my Model 3 LR is) simply because I do not need such a big long car, BUT if then EQS always over EQE.
Model s plaid Rival lol.
A model 3 performance will blow it out of the water with its performance and technology let alone a plaid 😂
with the new refresh model, three, potentially being a plaid drive train or a ludicrous drive train Mercedes has a lot of work to do if they want to even come close
Same thing with Porsche
You didnt spoke enought about $$$
Evening mate
Costs +30% of a Model S Plaid with similiar equipment. Should be better compared to the Model 3.
Really not impressed by the orange peel paint job. Reflections showing a lot of imperfections
On the road price of £114,750. Then there’s the options list 😂😂😱
Yeah, Mercedes has never been at the value end of the market 💡
Car looks nice but this interior has been in many Mercedes now for a long time so it doesn’t feel special anymore and look dated.
Their operating system is dated too and looks it.
The tech is nothing special. I’ll take a model s please 👍🏻
So glad someone finally confirm mercedes auto pilot is better than Tesla’s. I’m a model S owner
I’m thinking nice car - might make an alternative to my Tesla Model 3 Performance. Then I see that horrible wood effect, you have to press a start button, the car doesn’t recognise it’s me from my phone app but needs a fingerprint, only one wireless phone charger, and I’m thinking, no thanks…
Impressive track performance though…
When I see a start button I think instant like since I controll on and off, not some stupid developing department, somtimes I want it on, say connecting a trailer, it's -10 outside or maybe +30 buuut noo then you have to dig through some stupid screen to find 10 under menus and click I understand. soo annoying.
When I se buttons I think instant like. Then the screens, cheap cheap screens uggly screens. What happend to beautiful simple mechanical dials. Maybe provide some realy time information about what's happening with the car instead, temperatures off battery, how much heating is on to what and so on. So much posabilitys and would be so much easier to spot a fault.
I also would like how bad people are navigating theese days when you need a map infront off you all the time. At least people seam to just be looking 2m ahead of them since they brake and accelerate all the time, maybe just looking at the stupid screen?
What's it like back there in the 1970's @@Iceeeen?
@@davebway6371 70s? Please tell me how development is when things takes 10-50 times longer and it screams at you for stupid stuff and the automation makes mistakes daily? I have 2 electric cars in the drive way at the moment. the drivetrain is fine. But hell everything else is crap compared to the 26 year old e39 I use to tow with.
The e39 so nice and quite, drivig on the gravelroad is a dream when nothing rattels. When need something it's in arms reach within a millisecond.
Just changing radio channels (yes i can't be bothered to wait for ex spotify to fire up for a 10min drive) is instant compared to the stupid touch interface when it has to think 5s and if you first adjust the volume a stupid slider shows upp and takes 4s to disapear before you can do anything else.
Development is making things better and faster, todays crap is neither of it. Just built cheap for massproduction with zero thought of usage in mind.
@@Iceeeen wow - get a new car man - you clearly bought the wrong EVs.
Exterior design is too jelly bean like - I guess for efficiency reasons but the car is not that efficient. If it were more aggressive looking like the AMG GT then I’d gladly give up efficiency.
plaid performance? definitely not
Plaid build quality? Defintely not.
Costs about $40k more, is less efficient , much slower, slower charging, fewer features and worse charging network to be fair
Not as quick as plaid but plaid is lethal. However the merc only needs a throttle press for a wet corner drift which you can’t do with plaid unless stop, enter track mode and configure settings. It has proper brakes, Augmented nav, and great seats.
Plaid is good but ultimately only LHD in this country and the EQE actually has more fun to it.
I like a plaid for sure. Performance is unbeatable and the efficiency and range better plus the software is good. But I still can’t go through McDonald’s drive through in one
Damn are these EQ series from Mercedes ever ugly.
no frunk? shame on you MB
Gorgeous car…..what’s the price 😜👍
That car is far from beauty 😂😂 it’s the opposite 😅
Sorry no, All MB EVs have been rather ugly to me.
*It is an absolute beauty (*For a very ugly Mercedes EV..)
the paint job looks awful
A lot of Joe Biden talk lol Anyway
