"For Today" is a song I wrote while I was dealing with difficult health news regarding my future with my medical condition. I was born with Hypo-Plastic Left Heart Syndrome (which basically means that after a few open heart surgeries, the doctors were able to get my heart to function with only using half of the valves). I will be on the heart transplant list in the near future and during the month of August I visited doctors every single week, along with testing to be evaluated to be on the list to receive a potential heart and possibly new liver.
It was a time with much worry, stress, anxiety, sadness, and daunting news about the future. I've always trusted God had a plan for me but I was starting to come to terms with how much suffering I might have to go through to follow God's plan.
Looking back through this month, I've been able to cope, and while the future will bring hard times, I'm at a season of acceptance and God is bringing me through with amazing family/friend support. How did I get through the month of August, learn from it, experience life, and find what joy I could? I focused on the day of. I tried not to focus on the future or the past but on what I was doing that day.
As a wise church leader and friend of mine said, the perfect form of mindfulness is trusting in God. The scriptures linked to this can be found in the last 10 verses of 3 Nephi Chapter 13 in the Book of Mormon and in Matthew Chapter 6 in the New Testament.
As we go throughout life's challenges, let us remember Jesus' counsel to us in focusing on the day at hand, or being in the present moment: let us live "For Today"
