    After a long time since my last Mario Kart Lost Bits, it's time to revisit Mario Kart 64 with a modern Lost Bits lens!

    Just so you know, the reason the S in the “Shell” sign is flipped is because the early Mario Kart 64 signs were spoofs of existing advertisements including gas stations and even Marlboro. The “S” is flipped because there is a gas company with the name “Shell” and they were most likely trying to make it legally distinct by flipping the “S” before just scrapping the spoof idea entirely.

      The orange 64 image is spoofing the Union 76 logo, and the Yoshi 1 is spoofing Mobil 1.

    Magikoopa being swapped with DK was probably due to negotiations with rare not completing until dev was already started, as they credit them for DKs model in the credits and also DK's Jungle Parkway was the last racetrack made

    Regarding Magikoopa, if you check the credits for MK64, there is a thanks to Rare for their DK design. At the time of that build, they may not quite have finalised the negotiations for this, and so had Magikoopa as a placeholder/backup if the deal fell through.

    my idea for the weight was that you would through it forward and if it landed on an opponent it would flatten them for a short period of time, and if it didn't it would break on impact. It would be thrown in an upward overarching motion.

      I thought it might cause an opposing racer to be slowed down, because it makes them heavier, so they get passed by the other racers. Nintendo probably thought it was too unfair, and cut it.

      I bet it would have worked like the pan item did in the Snowboad Kids games - when used, everyone else immediately gets flattened unless they’re invisible or invincible.

    Someone from Nintendo (might have been Miyamoto) stated outright that they scrapped the ability to remove items from races because they wanted Mario Kart to only be wacky, and there were plenty of not wacky racing games people could buy like F-Zero.
    Pretty sure it was Miyamoto. And it aged poorly anyways.

      To me they look like different colored yoshi eggs. Maybe they were gonna work like bananas how they're linked in a row to the car. They're even egg shaped but it's hard to tell bc they're so pixelated

    I would assume the weight was more like an unfortunate item to have, as it would decrease your speed and turning ability but it was extremely rare to have.

    I believe that the weight may have been the equivalent of the little lightning cloud in Mario Kart wii, but instead of a lightning bolt, the weight may have crushed the caracter that have it above his head

    I think that the weight would be used as a way to slow people down. If someone ran into it, they would have it stuck on them until they got it of by maybe spam clicking a button. They didn’t have to get it off, but if they didn’t then they would ride slower until they hit something else.

    My guess is that the weight will, when used, drop on all opponents and cause that flattened animation that plays when someone is ran over while tiny from a lightning bolt to happen.
    A similar item (the pan) was used to work exactly like that in the Snowboard Kids series.

    So with the debug mode that lets you see what direction you’re facing, and the fact that you can drive around Peach’s Castle, you could create a compass for Mario 64, and with Peach’s Castle in Odyssey, that really opens things up.

    6:30 I think...:
    -the Yoshi egg would've functioned similarly to Yoshi's egg special in Mario Kart Double Dash
    -the cape feather would've allowed for a quick spin-hop over holes, gaps, fences, or other players, items, etc...
    -the "marbles" might've shot out in a very wide range hitting anyone in proximity with the effect of a shell?
    -the weight I'm guessing might've been a negative item where the player would be slowed down, but possibly being so heavy that anyone or any item hitting said player would be nullified...yeah idk lol. :P

    Funny enough, the japanese voice clips for luigi, peach, wario, and toad were reused in all versions of mario kart super circuits, and the unused "CONGRATULATIONS!" Sound clip made it into super circuit as well.

    The weight might as well have worked as the cap does in “Snowboard Kids”. Or its effect could’ve been similar to that of the lightning (making opponents smaller and slower); thus making it easily replaceabale.
    It’s also funny how the item slot shows a two-mushroom sprite when you can’t actually get them from the item box.

    The With Item and Without Item graphics were actually used in the games development; Nintendo had play testers play with items both on and off to see if it would be worthwhile to implement a mode with items off as a more competitive mode; the majority of players didn’t like the no items mode saying it felt too empty and boring, and so the devs decided to scrap it entirely.

    1.Yoshi egg Functions like these in yoshis island and when you throw it it will Explode
    2. The *balls* are marbles and act like moving banana peels 🍌
    3. The feather make the player jump
    As seen in the code (i think)

    The egg would probably work like the fireballs in chin you would get to shoot a certain amount of eggs forwards or backwards, the marbles would probably work like the green fireballs with Luigi in Mariokart Double Dash where you get to shoot multiple targets at once, and the weight would probably make you heavier and not bounce back when you bump into other racers.

    The ability to toggle items was fully implemented at one point in development, it was cut because the game didn't feel like Mario Kart without items during testing

    I remember my first and most favorite Mario Kart was Wii.
    I think I'll might play this one but I don't know if it's really worth it considering the Wii one probably Re-takes old things while adding new ones like the other Mario Karts.
    So somebody can tell me if it's worth it?

      Mario Kart 64 is such flawlessly broken its joy to play... Just like wii is! Though the skips possible in 64 are quite the more mind-blowing.
      I like the game because it kinda let's you explore the tracks and whatnot.
      Idk it's a Mario kart game, if you like one, you'll like them all. (maybe except snes one, I really like that one, but it plays a little differently than the rest? Very similar to DS though)

      MK64 isn’t bad. It’s just hard in the higher engine classes because the CPU karts cheat (but they do in most MK games anyway). It’s super fun actually although multiplayer is a bit lacking compared to Wii

      As someone who started playing the series on 64...
      It's kind of a mixed bag. It has really quite cool courses but not many courses in total.
      The controls are kinda weird, as is sort of the case for the first four Mario Karts (in different ways each) compared to the latter four, but it's far better than, say, Super Circuit.
      The soundtrack is great, but that could just be nostalgia.
      64 is, in my opinion, better than Super Circuit... um... Maybe Double Dash... not 100% sure if it beats out 7... or Super Mario Kart... Well, maybe that one; I dunno...
      I wouldn't say that it's quite as good as Wii, 8, or DS, but it's not bad, certainly.
      There are other games like Mario Kart 8 or Mario Kart DS that I would recommend over it, but, if you decided to get it on Virtual Console or whatever, I certainly wouldn't chide you for it.

    My guess as to what sound mode “xxx” is is that it is an earlier implementation of stereo mode.
    Originally, stereo mode had a different fall-off as the sound panned left and right. Normally 1-63 is left, 64 is center, and 65-127 is right, with 1 and 127 being fully left or right.
    In the original stereo mode, 32 and 96 are mapped to fully left and right, and outside that range the sound begins to pan back toward center with a reduced volume and inverted wave form.
    So for example, pan value 31 would be slightly less left than pan value 32, but with still-decreasing volume and an inverted wave. This was their attempt at creating a behind-the-player wrap-around pan range but it was abandoned in favor of the standard panning equations for stereo (arc-pan), headphones (linear pan), and mono (L and R volumes set to 0.707f).

    I think the weight might have been an early version of the thundercloud, that would crush you after a certain amount of time, by touching another player you could get rid of it. I could imagine it would have indicated the time remaining with a growing shadow beneath the targetted player, but probably due to hardware limitations it got scrapped or due time

    The weight item is probably a early version of a pow, since when you drop a big weight, like the one in the icon, the ground shakes 🤔

    I think that the weight will make the player invisible and crush other players if they come in contact (unless they have a star) but will make the player slower

    I actually have a really good theory on how the weight may have worked. I think it would work alot like the thundercloud in mario kart wii, except it affects your speed and weight. It starts off behind you, slowing you down, but if you touch another player it passes the weight to them and slows them down.

    Heres how i think the weight could/would've been used:
    Once you picked it up from an item box you would drive close to one of the other racers, press the item button, and it would attach to that racers kart, where it would either slow them down or make it where they couldn't move temporarily.

    The reason they got rid of Magikoopa is because they got permission from Rare to use their DK model. It's a shame, Magikoopa would have been way cooler to have in this game than Donkey Kong.

      I'll never forget when magikoopa was almost playable. I guess the almost added him into mk8 also. There was a data leak that showed his emblem. I love magikoopa and hold out hope that one day he'll be added in. If the queen bee or wiggler can get in, I don't see why he can't.

    I know this video was made a year ago. But it’s my first time seeing it. The heavy weight item sort of makes me think of Snowboard Kids DS, where the weight would drop down on a player, smooshing them, stopping them temporarily before the inflated and continued onwards.

    For the unused items:
    Idk about the egg
    The 6 balls could be an item sort of like the 7 or 8 in MK7/MK8 respectively, but just with koopa shell-type items
    The feather could be kinda like the raccoon leaf from MK7, but with the Cape Feather from World instead of the leaf from SMB3/NSMB2
    I think that the weight could have been like the cloud from MKWii, but slowing the player down instead of speeding them up.

    The weight item might've been a sign that the player can use it to turn himself metal which was likely cut because it was too similar to the star item.

    the xxx mode was probably to test a "Mute" function most likely that was probably useful when working on this game for hours debugging it, or a scrapped 64DD audio expansion like Dolby surround.

    Restoring the music from these systems into true HD is what I do, so I have a guess (and only a guess) as to what the XXX audio menu item might have meant.
    I saw, “Head Phone,” “Monaural,” and, “Stereo.” Mario Kart 64 uses and advanced version of the audio engine used in Super Mario 64, where they had a dickens of a time figuring out their audio modes!
    The game technically has 4 modes: Default, Stereo, Headphones, and Mono. The way they are supposed to work is:
    Default: Regular MIDI sin/cos panning (arc-panning).
    Stereo: The panning is stretched so that instead of 0 being far left and 127 being far right, 32 is far left and 96 is far right (approximately) and from 0-31 and 97-127 the sound comes back toward center but is inverted.
    Headphones: Linear panning (X-panning).
    Mono: Mono. Nothing to say about this.
    But in the North American version, if you select Stereo mode you actually get Default. Nintendo had a very hard time with their audio modes during this period.
    These 4 audio modes exist in Mario Kart 64, Star Fox 64, and all of the EAD games on the Nintendo 64.
    It appears that they had the same exact problem in Mario Kart 64. Since the game again maps the stereo setting to “Default,” my guess is that “XXX” is the true “Stereo” mode with expanded panning and inverted samples.
    If it actually changes the audio and you can get me a sample of some music in all 4 modes, I could probably confirm this!

    It is not a bug that the results screen loops 64 times and then plays a variant twice! This is only a common misconception! The MIDI data has clear instructions to loop section A 64 times, then section B twice, and then start all over. Mr. Nagata knew about the secret music in Super Mario World Special Zone and decided to do the same thing for his ode to Nintendo 64, which is why it loops exactly 64 times! I feel sorry for the person who sat down and counted the loops for an hour instead of checking the data!

    I think the weight could also have been used as a last place item.
    The weight would affect evrybody else in a sence that it makes them temporary a bit slower so that the last place can catch up.

    I always found it pretty interesting how there were so many formula 1 references in MK64. All of those altered signs were actually sponsors of F1 teams (Marlboro, Mobil 1, Shell, Agip, Goodyear were all present during the time MK64 was developed)

    The weight was probably an alternative lightning thing; it probably pancaked the players making them go slower until they re-inflated over the course of time, very similar to lightning

      What backs up this theory is when you run over an enemy that shrank from the lightning they flatten and float down iirc, its possible the lightning originally shrank but didn;'t do the flattening thing, rather the ton weight flattened all players at once
      it'd be removed because of how op it is; that was before they realized peach cheats

    I think the weight would work like the anvil in Toontown Online's racing, which works like the Blue Shell in Mario Kart 64. The Blue Shell replaced this weight because it's more Mario, among other things.
