Hey guys, welcome to LOST BITS! Where I will cover unused, unreleased and unseen things in various games! In this video, we’re diving into another Mario Kart game, this time with Mario Kart DS ! The final release has a bunch to cover, but quickly after starting to research I realized the prototypes for this game are PLENTIFUL with scrapped and altered content. This includes unused graphics, sounds and more! Hope you enjoy!

Yeah. If you do some research, there are quite a few other examples of this in games and their prototypes, which can lead to some pretty humorous results, like seen here.
Yeah, I was wondering if the “Flesh” truck was a result of that! Since the English L sound doesn’t really exist in Japanese it’s possible whoever made that graphic didn’t realize flesh and fresh are two very different words 😂

Always used to play it in the car on long trips. So many good memories of being bad at 100 cc lol!

I'm not convinced that's not supposed to be the eyes. A bit far forward for arms and don't see why they'd be held up so far.
@@digitalhare4516 It's more than likely an early mockup model with a temporary arm texture hastily made and slightly misplaced just to get the point across of what it's supposed to be. I highly doubt it's an eye considering the general design for bullet bills in the main series has remained relatively consistent and it's unlikely they'd make such an odd design for its eyes like that

It's interesting seeing the shift from the early 2000's to the late 2000's art styles right here within the one game and it's prototypes, particularly with the items.
I remember seeing a strange thing on the back of the box art. It shows two players playing a Donkey Kong (which is impossible) and a player was in "0" place if you look close enough

the animated pictures weren't removed. they actually do animate on the final version natively but you can only see them in grand prix mode when the camera flies though the course before the race starts. i believe the skating pictures not animating is actually a glitch, not disabled. i made a code to re enable the pictures animating in the final. also little known fact but in the demo you can drag the blue shell :P i was part of the finding a dumping process of the Europe version of the mkds demo kart. its was so hard to find that cart... i have both usa and europe demo carts :P

the shape is just too odd for an arm and it definitely more resembles a sorta cat-eye looking shape.
my idea for the magenta koopa shell is that since purple is red and blue mixed together and magenta is close to purple i think it would work like a red shell but it would only track the person in 1st place

12:04 Actually, DK’s voice clips in Double Dash actually ARE ripped straight from Donkey Kong 64, they’ve just been slowed and pitched down.
The magenta shell likely was supposed to be an even faster and more accurate shell than the red, as seen in SMB: The Lost Worlds and later in Mario Kart: V² Circuit.
I remember getting this game upon release, which meant that I had obtained the early copy where the game always locks up during Luigi's Mansion. Neat!
These prototype builds are always more fascinating than the final game and I love it.
Seeing these pixel characters just gives me huge nostalgia

They must have had Mario Kart DS planned for a while, as Nitro was an early code name and potential final name for the DS.
The items at 4:03 are definitely based off double dash, and the blooper looks to be based off its design in Super Mario Sunshine, although idk where the lightning ball came from
16:08 it would have been a cool idea to turn the pyramid into a star only short cut. So you have to destroy the pyramid in order to cross the bridge
MK DS actually still looks good. It has that retro feel... this game will always be one of my favorites!

I will get a ton of dislikes but I kinda hate the games graphics, I did even as a kid. I get it was one of the first DS games but I just don’t like it.

This was actually stolen from the anime "A Squid's Tale" when his friend dies and his eyes go dark. Because of this, the Squid item was too overpowered, so they had to change the sprite.

@stupid rat Yeah, it's true. Before the discovery of the Super Mario Kart prototypes, it was rare to see this *many* differences (with early audio, graphics, unused stuff, etc.) in a Mario Kart prototype before the final version was out.

Here's a fact: The letters in the Pictochat Logo (which got carried over to the 3ds) have some secret replacement symbols. The P is an add friend icon, used for the Local Multiplayer screen. I, C, H, A, & T are used for the retro course tags.

I have an idea of what the Magenta shell would do: 3 magenta shells come out and rotate around you, but when you lose one (Either by Throwing it or running into someone) the other two get launched instantly.

This is just a mock up (aka custom idea) with the purple shell,
The purple shell would slow the player in 1st and then stun him, after the shell is used, you can no longer slow the player in the 2nd or 3th shell, but you can slow the player again if you get another pack

Pretty funny that I actually find a large amount of these beta features better than the final product. Makes me like the game even less than I did before.
This was my first video game I ever got so I had servers amounts of nostalgia watching this entire video. Damn this game hits different

Damn, this really kicks me right in the nostalgia gut. I used to watch videos of the beta tracks all the time when I was younger, of course because I didn't know better, I just assumed they were hidden courses so I spent ages trying to find methods to unlock them, but non of them worked. Now I just see them for what they are, early and beta versions of tracks that made it to the final game, although NGL the beta song does kinda slap doe and I wish they kept it in the game. Much prefer it to the circuit song they eventually used.

3:59 I think that all of these proto things like the DS Menu Icon and all of the items are actually pre-rendered sprites like how Sonic X-Treme used pre-rendered sprites. Its also very possible that some of the final game's items might also be small edits of the proto ones, but for the majority of the items, it seems like they did a complete overhaul and just drew the sprites from the ground up instead of pre-renders. it might have been that the pre-rendered sprites looked just a little, uh... crusty, I guess? what I mean by crusty is that making the renders more pixel-y also crippled them a little, and the palette on them doesn't look too good either, and when you combine those two things, whaddya get?

also the render for the blooper item looks like the bloopers from Sunshine so they might've just reused the Sunshine model to make said render

Let me talk about what differences I know about in the courses.
Music: I absolutely love the instruments so much! The main differences are the Brass, Percussion, some Basses, Saxophone, Electric Piano, and Organ sound different than the final.
Intro Cameras: Not too much to talk about, but 12 nitro tracks and 5 retro tracks are either not available or messed up.
Replay Cameras: All courses except for Figure 8 Circuit have different replay cameras. Some cameras are the same as in the final, and some cameras that are changed are understandable why. Waluigi Pinball and Rainbow Road don’t have cameras yet.
Overview Maps: Some of which are less detailed, and 3 course maps are not implemented
Minimaps: Some are less pixelated (which is the earliest style), some are pixelated, and some aren’t here yet.
the "flesh instead of fresh" typo was also seen in other games from rough translation errored games, like the ultra obscure Magic Pengel: the quest for color

23:57 for the Magenta Shell (or Pink Shell based on Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Worlds) they come from Koopas that are twice as slow, but the actual shell when launched is twice as fast. It acts similar to the red shell but is much faster, meaning that it is less likely to miss it's target.
It always blows me away about the sponsor parodies in mario kart, I mean it's just wild thinking about Mario having his own brand of cigarette in the mushroom kingdom.

Magenta is a mix of red and blue. Perhaps magenta shells were a mix of red and blue shells - they travel like red shells but target first place like blue shells.
Just to let you know, the red background menu option reads "kore de ii desu ka?" or "Is this good?". The red is most likely transparency I'm guessing.
