@@linvol20 I have a hybrid, it’s true brakes are grabby at low speeds. Also Eco mode doesn’t stay selected after turning off which is super annoying. Easy pains to live with for everything else right about it!
I wanted the Hybrid, just needed a cheap work truck.... the dealer had two I could choose from, I went the "cheaper" option ... I might puke, using the root word "cheap" to describe it... I got a "Tremor", its awesome , But I figure I'm going to pay this off until I'm in positive equity, and trade in for the cheaper Hybrid model, I'm gonna be spoiled with some of the features I have; I already know, so I wouldn't be able to go without any options myself... but I could do without this moon roof/ sunroof thing.
Seen a few Mavericks around my neck o' the woods already, all of them base-model hybrids. I asked a couple of owners if they were getting the magic 40 mpg, and they both said yes. The right truck at the right time.
@@zachgeary5088 I LOVE snow driving and I drive a 2018 Accord on low-rolling-resistance all-seasons. Admittedly, I live on Long Island.....but I WILL take the car out right after the first plowing.
It's really fun to see these out in the wild, they are so much smaller than traditional trucks. 100% agree with the sentiment these are a focus replacement - Americans need versatility and sometimes a small SUV doesn't cut it. I think Ford has hit the bullseye on a new customer segment
I'm actually kinda surprised that this size of pickup truck wasn't already a segment. The Mexican car market has had pretty tiny 4-cilinder pickup trucks for a long-ass time. Hell, one of them was Ford and it was tiny like a 2000s Ford Fiesta. VW and Fiat also offer some of them and they're cheap and versatile.
They used to be! My dad had a tiny old Datsun when I was a kid. This isn't just competing against pickups; it's competing against anything in the 20-30k range. And in that range I think it's damn compelling
@@paulwhite9242 it's admitting that small pick ups have a market, that belonged once to sedans and hatchbacks. For that price range and size even I'd consider getting a pick up truck
With a little over 5,300 miles on my 2.0L Turbo 4x4 Off Road XLT Mav, I average over 32 mpg combined. Keep in mind that this included Winter remote starts to go skiing . . . along with living in hilly terrain. This little pick up is a rock star . . . just love it !!! Thanks for sharing . . .
Toyota needs to bring back the Toyota pick up (mini truck vs their traditional Tacoma). Maybe they can consider a hybrid or a 4 cycled version with improved MPG like this.
I've had pickups all of my adult life. Went from a small Nissan Frontier to a Chevy 2500, several different full size service trucks and finally a Tundra. I desperately wanted to go back to a small truck like my old Frontier. Nothing out there so I had given up on getting a replacement truck as I didn't want a gigantic monstrosity of a truck or the second house payment that goes with one! When I saw the Maverick last June I was first in line at my dealership to get one ordered. Exactly what I wanted and needed. Couldn't be happier with the truck.
I have an XL plain jane hybrid and love it. It was exactly what I was looking for. I had sold my old Tundra last year and was looking for something that could carry larger things but really didn't need a pickup anymore, especially with them all being gigantic and the price of a small house. We were looking at mid sized SUV's but really wasn't too excited about it. Then I stumbled across an internet story about this new "Maverick". The minute I saw it, I knew that was exactly what I was looking for. All the usability of a daily driver car with the convenience of a small pickup bed when needed. Placed my order the first week they opened up the order bank. Picked it up last week and couldn't be happier. My only complaint is that I didn't think to order two of them! They are extremely hard to get but if you are patient, it is worth the wait. I've had mine a week now and have already had two offers to buy it for $12K more than I paid for it. It is probably the hottest vehicle on the market right now and will stay there until the Lightning finally starts shipping!
I was able to rent one for an extended weekend (XLT hybrid) and fell in love with it. Drove like a car or small suv, seats were incredibly comfortable and I was AVERAGING 49 MPG! Ready to order a 2023, if I could just decide on the color... 🤔
I want the Rapid Red in the XL HYBRID. Wondering it it'll just be about $500 more for the color change or if they'll try to force me to bump up to the XLT with that same color. We will see. I wanna keep the price as rock-bottom as possible, so I may have to just pick the colors offered for the XL and call it a day. I can't wait to order it in AUGUST! 🎉
I own a Cyber Orange Mav, I can definitely say that (if you like a pop of color) - this is the choice! The online configurator does not serve the color any justice. I was struggling between Cactus Gray and Cyber Orange, but once I saw CO in person - it sold me.
I really enjoyed his review, and I think that the extended information about how the truck actually functions day to day is fantastic. I sat in one a few days ago and absolutely loved it. Now the difficulty is trying to find one! For my commute, the Hybrid is absolutely perfect since it’s almost 600 mi. per tank! That’s what I get my Honda accord hybrid from 2014 right now. But with this truck, I can finally have usable “trunk” space, instead of just a battery pack in the Accord!
Did you end up getting one? You can definitely find one now probably at a much better price. I ended up buying a old Honda pilot as a stop gap until prices dropped but honestly the thing does everything so much better than I ever expected I’m not sure I’ll get something new now. It was cheap, it’s paid for, gets 22mpg, loaded with options including leather heated seats, has AWD with a 4WD mode that has a center locking differential and tows 5k pounds. I really want a Maverick but never expected the Honda to be such a utilitarian vehicle especially for the price. I need to test drive one, maybe it’ll change my mind lol.
@@dickhitswater4836 Not as yet; the market prices around here were still very high and I was hoping they would release an AWD hybrid version. Then I got distracted by the Toyota Sienna hybrid. But I also fell in love with my Honda Accord all over again and have been enjoying it so much. The Pilot is a great vehicle, so I’m glad you got one!
I love my Maverick!!! It fits in my small garage, even with the tailgate down! All of my neighbors park their trucks on the driveway or on the street. (Homes built in the 90s have smaller garages, I think.) Definitely good to be able to park in the garage especially with 110F summers here in Vegas. I also feel like it has more cabin space compared to my coworkers' Tacoma and Colorado. I drive a 2-liter Ecoboost engine with AWD and I get 25.9 MPG combined.
How’s the power with the 2.0l when you need to accelerate a little quicker than normal? Ie passing/merging on the highway. I have a 2016 fusion right now which has been really good to me but man does is it feel slow.
No other test reports, IMO, are more professionally prepared, written and photographed -- or do a better job of making me feel as if I've actually sat in and driven the vehicle. Very entertaining, balanced and informative (as always), Tom, thanks. FWIW I ordered my hybrid Maverick last July (2021). It's scheduled to arrive in the first two weeks of early July (2022), so about a year's wait -- which I fully expect I will not regret.
re: no lockable trunk. I saw a Maverick at a campground with a Diamondback bed cover. That cover is weatherproof and lockable and strong enough to strap up to 400 lbs onto the bed cover. I have a Diamondback cover on my big F250 truck (need the big truck for the big trailer). The Diamondback cover protects everything in the bed and can be folded back to carry tall cargo or removed by one person in 5-10 minutes. I'd go that route if I was looking at the Maverick. Love the look and utility of this baby truck...
This truck is the perfect size. Great city truck. Can't keep my wife out of it perfect for stuff around the house back and forth to Home Depot or Lowe's. XLT, Lux Pac, 360, 2.0 Eco boost. Ordered, with no price increase. Yard!
I bought this truck because i needed more room for my kiddos. We bike ride a lot, so being able to sling the bikes over the tailgate was also a prerequisite. Im short so slinging them over a f150 is exhausting.
Exactly right? Full size picks are super sized! It’s ridiculous, the James Garner “Maverick” is top in its weight class and does more with less. Pretty Mavericky!
I reserved my XL hybrid in November and still don't have word of anything from Ford. I'm afraid I'll be pushed to 2023. The demand for the hybrid was off the charts
We have met with a local dealership and at least have our name in the system. We are expecting a 2023 Maverick XLT with, AWD, 4K Tow Package & XLT Luxury Package sometime in the Winter/Spring of 2023. The timing works perfect for us. Found one on a lot about an hour away, where we got to give it a good test drive. Both city and highway. We chose this vehicle because we live outside of town, where winter conditions can be challenging, and we tow a Travel Trailer. Meets all our needs. Thanks for the review.
This is by far the best video I’ve seen on the Maverick it pretty much covered everything that I wanted to know without all the extra text specs that a lot of places give this blah blah blah blah blah so that all the side great video I’m definitely considering buying an XLT now that it’s 2024 almost 2025 those 2022s are finally around the original MSRP so I think the great time to buy a 2022 Maverick
I've had my Cyber Orange XLT Hybrid for the last few weeks now and I absolutely love it. I don't need AWD so hybrid was a no-brainer for me, which pays off with a consistent 40-50 mpg every trip I take. That's 50/50 city and highway, driving economically.
I had to get rid of my truck because so many people were bothering me to do stuff for them. Moving furniture, going to the big box store to pick up something large or towing something. You can have a really good SUV and a trailer and almost no one will bother you, own a truck and almost everyone will bother you. I do miss my truck but I don't miss the extra work.
LOVE my 2015 Ford F150, Lariat, with less than 70,000 miles. Turbo boost gets me 18-19 MPG around town & up to 26-27 MPG on the Highway (not pulling anything of course). But it HAS THE POWER to pull VERY WELL.
My Maverick with the Lariat and a cover on the box, works just like a car. I have driven it from Tennessee to Texas to Oregon and back, keeping suitcases in the box, with the lockable endgate and covered box, everything was secure. My hybrid got excellent mileage and handled wind and highway speeds just fine. The adaptive cruise control and lane holding made it excellent for long distance driving.
I've been waiting for mine close to a year now and have been bumped up to year 2024. I'm replacing my Civic with the Maverick. Thanks for the helpful review!!
A great review as always. I have only seen ONE Maverick at my local dealer when they first became available. I have not seen another once since. My local Hyundai dealer gets regular deliveries of the Santa Cruz (all trims). "I pity the fools" who are buying any new vehicle right now as the dealers are tacking on ridiculous markups. Used prices for anything less than three years old are at full list price even with 40,000 miles on the clock.
Tell Me about it... It's crazy. My friend's wife (Money) just purchased a new Escalade. The dealer charged $25k OVER LIST! She had to get in line!!! I can't believe it.
Not all dealers are doing ADMs. My dad, sister and dentist all got their cars for under MSRP recently. A good friend just scored a Silverado at sticker. Shop around.
@@DrivenCarReviews I live in the NYC metropolitan area where inventories are scarce, demand is high and people are affluent and willing to pay more. If I needed a new car I would probably shop in a rural area in another state.
I feel like the new Maverick also fills the spot in peoples' lives that the Ranger used to, simple, light duty work truck for the person that just needs something to haul mulch, camping equipment, or plants a couple times a year
Good day, readers & commenters, while Tom deplored the lack of a trunk, one must keep in mind of the storage under the rear seat if you so wish to an item out of sight. Great review and kudos to Tom & co.
Put a roll-up rigid tonneau on it if you’re hung up on this. BAK X4S for example is a beautiful, functional, simple-to-operate solution that keeps the cargo safe and dry. I have one on my Maverick as do many others.
I had a 1970 two door Maverick, I bought it in 1974, and it was my first car. Straight 6 and 3 on the tree. Rainbow coloured cloth low back seats with a brown exterior. And, it had trim rings. I have a friend who had the 4 door version, called the Comet. They were kind of like the 70's version of a K car, cheap as chips but they got the job done. I for one have no issue with a pickup having the Maverick name. The Maverick/Comet was a good (for the time) practical, cost effective family vehicle that as i said got the job done. It sounds like this new Maverick will be the same.
@@ProctorsGamble Yes, I'd agree. I don't remember seeing a Mercury badge on it, but I was almost identical to my 2 door, except for a different grill and two more doors.
@@ProctorsGamble Correct! My dad has a Mercury Comet and it’s almost identical to the Ford Maverick. I guess it’s kind of like the Ford Crown Victoria/Mercury Grand Marquis.
@@jbountalas My dad has a Mercury Comet and it’s basically identical to his friends Ford Maverick except for the grill like you said and maybe the bumpers are slightly longer as well but it is also a 2 door. I think it’s like comparing the ford crown victoria and the mercury grand marquis. Basically the same car with different trims/options.
I ordered mine back in sept. 21- Took nearly 6 months, but the dealer honored the sticker price for ordered vehicles. Ford built this after noticing that 20 year old tacomas were still routinely selling for half their original sticker price, because people Wanted a smaller, more affordable truck, not the bloated upsized trucks that rangers, tacomas, and other marques had turned into. The thing I like is that it has all sorts of utility and convenience features built in, from the two 110 power outlets, to the USB and USB-C charger ports, to the spacious underseat and in cab storage. To the integrated tie downs and the short bed that can still carry 4X8 sheet materials. Hyundai’s recent plague of engine troubles, and the $8,000 higher price on their Santa Cruze with matching options, coupled with the total unavailability of one to test drive back in late 21 decided me on the Maverick. I find the AWD 250 hp Maverick, set to sport mode, is plenty fast and zippy. And I like that their tow package that gives you 4,000 lb towing capacity includes a built in brake controller.
I live Washington State and the Maverick is perfect solution for people that live here. it's a perfect fit for people who liked the old Ranger compact pickups. the somewhat different interior trim. is because Ford is using recycled materials. which in this day and age is wise thing. I would be curious to see a single cab version. but its not possible. the plastics around the bed won't last very long if a person uses it as a work truck. but it's a good thing that Ford offers replacement pieces for that. it's small but Ford went for that on purpose. because they have the mid sized Ranger, and the F150, and then the Super Duty. it was designed for people who live in the city that need to haul things. like garden mulch, mountain bikes, surf boards, jet skis, four wheelers, and other such items. I think Ford hit an out of the park home run with this vehicle. and the proof of that is they have been getting snatched up very quickly. making them hard to get.
Love the look of this one! I live in the UK and drive a Navara (Fontier) and its a lovely truck but its very car like in terms of styling and doesnt feel at all like a traditional pick up, its almost too refined. Ranger next for me. Incidentally pick ups are becoming very popular here in the UK and I found that once i broke through that psycological barrier and owned my first one I couldnt go back to cars, not even 4x4s.
I’m on my 4th Ford Ranger XLT super cab 4X4. I really need a body on frame bc I only use my Ranger as a work truck around my property. I need an actual truck with the 6 ft bed. I’m actually afraid of the Maverick. A Unibody can’t handle the work that I need. Our other cars are an Outback (my wife’s car) and my Rav 4WD Limited with a 3.5 V6. It gets 25-26 mpg on the highway. The 269 hp is great. Last year we took our 11 Ranger to MT and coming home to WA state, our Ranger was loaded. I put 50# of pressure in my tires and 60# of pressure in my air shocks. The speed limit in MT is 80mph. I set the cruise at 85mph and I consistently got 24mpg. Yes we were hauling ass. Our Ranger has a 4.0 liter V6 with a 5spd auto transmission and a LSD. Sorry but the Maverick just won’t measure up
To me it's the perfect truck. Enough room to haul 4 or 5 people. A small but still usable bed that even offers a bed extender option. Even without the extender, it's perfect for hauling mulch or other items that i would normally haul in my wife's Edge ST. From test driving an XLT 2.0 Awd Maverick. I found It drove like a car. It rode well and you can tow a light trailers. Maybe Ford will add Awd option on Hybrid powered Mavericks, and hopefully they don't raise it's price due to supply chain issues and inflationary material adjustments. It's a great small truck with a price that falls well below the $47,000 new vehicle average. In my opinion, it's a fantastic versatile vehicle that handles a lot of needs. If I remember correctly. You have hidden storage under the rear seat and while looking at the ordering program before it closed. Ford even offers camper toppers for the bed just like it's big big brother F150. I Have to include while at my Ford dealership. Next door is a Hyundai dealership. I looked over the Santa Cruz and thought maybe my wife wouldn't miss the rear Hatch section of her Edge making my own small truck. That's what I thought of after seeing the Santa Cruz is. An SUV with a bed attached. Ford did that with the Explorer Sport Trac. Looking at both mini pickups. I really like that the Maverick looks and is a real truck. Not a hybrid design. You actually own basically the same Maverick I'll be ordering. Same color XLT but with Awd which should help with using it during snowy winter months. First time on your site, but I'm looking forward to your future videos. Thanks for providing a informative owners perspective of owning a Maverick.
Maverick good looking factory color matching caps are available & they outsize any trunk. I’m going with a hard rollup lockable tonneau. I got the base XL hybrid with moonroof, spray in bedliner & full size spare tire. Who else offers factory option moonroof in base model? Because there’s so many factory drilled DIY holes in the bed I’ve added inexpensive but strong adjustable tie down rails with stainless steel eye bolts & SS floor D-rings. No problem carrying 12ft lumber etc.. Maverick is amazingly thought out. Wouldn’t miss my F150 except for manual transmission.
I really like the maverick especially the hybrid, but the maverick is almost impossible to get and when one is available dealers want 5k+ markup. Which prices it more than santa cruz, and the santa cruz outclassed the maverick in many ways. Which is why I have the santa cruz limted and absolutely love it
I really want to drive one. I'm not a Ford guy, I drive Rams all day. But I was intrigued by this truck since I first heard about it. Unibody doesn't bother me. I've owned minivans before I owned trucks and those could handle a lot of weight. I just wonder how well I'd fit inside. I find all suvs to be too cramped. I'm 6'2" and not a slender 6'2" so I need space. What I love about my Ram and the Chrysler minivans I've owned in the past is their interior space. Everything was spread out and comfortable for me to reach.
Nice review. I hope Tom incorporates more "regular" (i.e. non-luxury/hybrid vehicles) reviews into the rotation. I've seen other car reviewers do two CX50 reviews and not a single one from Tom. I appreciate wanting to expose the audience to hybrid vehicles but still have to show these types as well.
I would get one, but it is almost impossible to find them. Just how things are now I guess. I don't even check dealer websites anymore. They either have nothing or the one they have is sold or it marked up 8 grand over MSRP. Maybe in a year or two inventory will increase. Until then going to just hold steady with what I have.
I drive a Ford Escape now with tow package. I was at my local Ford dealer a few weeks ago & I asked the service rep how the Maverick was selling, there was one parked there that he said someone paid 5 thousand cash over MSRP just to get it. I am not in the market, but maybe someday. Thanks for the review.
Great video, I just got an XLT with the same color minus the luxury package. It has a sunroof though which I liked and got the ecoboost version. I dont want to worry about the cost of replacing a battery on a hybrid. I just got lucky someone traded it in but paid 31,900 out the door for it with TTL with 10k miles on it.
Great extended review and really love this Maverick, name and all. If I ever end up with a longer commute, I will certainly be seeking out a Hybrid. For gas, I’d probably go with the Santa Cruz, which can tow 5000lbs, which more than good for my Spec Miata on an open trailer.
The Ford Maverick FX4 AWD is a do everything truck/vehicle/ute/suv. I traded a CX5 Carbon Edition Turbo AWD, after waiting 8 months for my order to be delivered.
Hey, Tom! Just wanted to say that your content is absolutely fantastic and that your videos have always been high-quality, entertaining, and informative. I tend to think of your videos as a more compact version of Alex on Auto's videos. Anyways, I LOVE the Maverick! Its refreshing honesty reminds me a lot of Frontier (or, as you say it "Frawntier). 2nd gen Frontier's lack of updates over the years yet high sales show that honesty IS the best policy.
I really like this truck. I am retired (70) and looking for a small pickup to replace my 2006 Silverado with nearly 200000 miles. But I don't need 4 doors, I need bed length (7 feet would be nice). Well anyway, going to hang on to what I have. Nice review.
Would like a manual transmission option. Would like drain plugs for the rear seat storage. I can see the Maverick as a replacement for a car. I would like the space to carry larger items when needed. Ford seems to be putting out interesting cars but it seems like Ford’s Dealer Network is determined to squeeze every drop of profit from the new lineup.
As someone who drove a last gen Ranger for 21 years, and used it 'as a truck' on a weekly basis, I can verify the bed on the Maverick is a dealbreaker. It's truly tiny, and with the wheel arches pushing into the bed area, practically useless. You can't fit a bike in the back. Trips to the dump will be "multiple", as in you will have to make multiple trips because the bed holds so little. - I'm not just any 'naysayer', I was super stoked for the Maverick. Like I said, a Ranger driver for 21 years. But the bed blew the deal. I thought back on all the stuff I was able to fit into a 6' bed, and realized that this 4' bed would have been useless for 75% of what I hauled. - I while I "love the look" of the interior (very cool modern vibe), in person, it really does feel cheap. Good looking plastic is still plastic. - I am 6'4", the driver seat is "tight". The back seats are barely bigger than the extended cab on my old Ranger. - Went with a Ridgeline. I priced a fully pimped Maverick, it came out to $36k-ish. The RTL Ridgeline was $42k. You definately get more for you money with the Ridgeline. I.e. even though it's $6k more, you get a real bed. You get in-truck storage. You get elbow room up front (each front seat passenger gets their own armest). You get way bigger back seats. You get insanely more useable back seat storage (with the seats folded up). You get a better ride (I disagree with Tom on this one. I've driven both, and while the Mav is not that far off the Rig, it's still less of a ride). AND, which never gets mentioned, Honda quality is way better than Ford quality. (If you search youtube for "trucks that get over 200,000 miles", you will find a video listing the top 5 trucks that are known to get 200,000 miles on an engine. The Rig is #2 on that list. There are no Fords on that list). I fully expect to get 20 years out of my Ridgeline. (I got 10 and 11 years out of my previous 2 Rangers). So really, my Rig only cost $20k per 10 years. It's a steal.....
I've seen videos of giant fat guys getting in the Maverick and liking the drivers seat. That being said, you need a midsize by the sound of it anyway, which the Ridgeline is. I traded in my 2001 F150 to get my wife a larger vehicle. It had over 200,000 miles on it. Everything original. The appeal of the Maverick isn't the pimped out version. At that point, you might as well get a Ranger. Its getting a hybrid vehicle that regularly gets over 40mpg and fits 5 (4 realistically) adults for 20k.
@@uni4rm um, no. I"ve sat in one. All the seats are tiny. They "work", but it's a compromised cabin. I wouldn't want to drive across state in one. And the bed is also tiny. Having owned a last-gen Ranger for the past 21 years - I've hauled some shit. And looking back, there's no way the mav's 4' bed would have been able to handle half my trips over the past 20 years.
I don't know how many compact sedan buyers are switching over to the Maverick, but I can definitely see typical truck buyers who are put off by the continuous growth of small trucks, as well as people who might otherwise buy a compact CUV buying the Maverick instead. I'm very interested in the Maverick, but I have concerns about build quality, long-term reliability, and if the tiny 4.5ft bed is enough. I currently drive a small truck with a 6ft bed that gets properly used.
When the Maverick was introduced, my first thought was, “these will sell like ice cream in Hades.” I know a stopped clock is right twice a day, but I believe I was right about the way it would sell.
Same, especially once the base price and powertrain were announced. $20k 40mpg compact pickup? There's a ton of demand for something like that. People have been clamoring for a small truck forever, and were disappointed at the Ranger not being very small and not being very cheap. I suppose the FWD may be a deal breaker for some, but not many (and it is available for a premium, if absolutely needed).
I've had my own 2.0 AWD FX4 4k tow Maverick for just over 6 months now. Love it! It's been perfect. A great everyday driver and does light truck stuff well too. What do you mean, NO trunk? I have a plastic bin in the bed under the tonneau. That is my trunk! LOL
Glad you like it, I couldn’t get comfortable in the seats and was not impressed with the component quality under the vehicle or the wind noise on the highway.
Some other automakers are already in this segment, it’s just that so far the small trucks aren’t sold world wide yet. NA gets the Maverick and Santa Cruz, but others do exist: the RAM 1000 and Fiat Toro, GM has the Chevy Montana, and SAIC has the Wuling Zhengtu. Small pickups are coming world wide!
I really really want one... Bad. My only issue is small trucks leave a bad taste (I'm 6'2"). I really need to test drive one before I place an order but I can't find one to test drive!!!
The car: I haven't seen one Maverick 25+ yrs. I have seen Gremlin station wagons (0_o). The only people complaining about the name must be the one's that yell at clouds. Great review. This channels content and presentation are a cut above the rest.
I read the other day that the PHEV is for sure coming likely in the 2024 model year when they will offer the Bronco Sport as a hybrid & PHEV. However the article also said an EV variant could come but it's just in the talking stage right now.
Yes someone in a parking lot called my Mav a unicorn! Sorry for your wait. My channel has over 90 Mav videos to help get through your wait. Subbing will show you the whole list.
Another fine review. Regarding your auto stop/start tests: I recently borrowed a cousin vehicle, a new Bronco Sport Big Bend, and I noticed that the auto-start was smooth enough when I let my foot off the brake to proceed. However, if the engine restarted itself during a longer stop (so as to power the A/C, I guess) while my foot was still on the brake, it definitely had more of a lurch. I wonder if you've noticed that in your vehicle testing--different auto-start smoothness depending on the circumstances of the auto-start.
I've not noticed that specifically. Have experience an occasion rough re-start occasionally on otherwise smooth systems though. Like it's having a hard day getting out of bed.
As long as you can get over how this thing looks. I've never been a guy who cared much if car looks good or not, as long as it gets the job done.....but this thing......right there with Pontiac Aztec....and the same goes for Hyundai Santa Cruz....
It all started with the El Camino and the Ranchero. Then went to the Dodge Rampage. Here we go again, but now there are 4 doors insted of 2, so it's acceptable. Wow.
Great work as usual. I can see how it replaces the Focus but in pricing, size, and drivetrain it really replaces the Fusion, which was also available in hybrid and Ecoboost and a three box design 5 passenger vehicle. On the name issue, I believe it should have been a "Bronco Sport-trac", but that would have required 4WD only. I'm waiting for an AWD PHEV version.
@@musicauthority7828 well I completely disagree. The Focus RS is an amazing vehicle, the Focus ST is a wonderfully hot hatch, and the Focus Elecric is one of the most fun to drive inexpensive electric vehicles ever built. Only the base Focus SE with naturally aspirated 2.0L and that stnpid twin clutch transmission sucked. Even the 1.0L Ecoboost Focus with the manual was an amazing little car! But notice no engines, transmissions, hybrids, or 4WD systems in common with the Maverick.
@@fabulousoffroaddesigns5080 You don't know what you are talking about. I own a Focus and it's a POS. and it's not the car itself because mine has a lot of miles on it. it's the worthless engineers that designed it. resulting in many many failed components on these horrible vehicles. I not only know this because I own one. but because I have been an automotive technician all my life.
@@musicauthority7828 well we currently own an FFE which we love enough that we are not trading it. I sold for Ford and I have done consulting in the automotive space, but that dual clutch transmission was a real issue. The old mechanics in our shop loved the 1.0L Focus cars. That was usually what they picked for their wives and kids. Not to mention parts are cheap. Like I said though, this pick up is not based on the Focus. It is based on the Fusion. The Fusion shared some hard points from the Focus and the C2 platform but not much else. The engines, transmissions, 4WD systems, CV joints, alternators, wiring, etc are all related to the Fusion not the Focus.
talking about dealer markup... I don't even wanna say how much I spent for a Tremor I found that day... yesterday. if you ask ill prolly tell if you need the scoop
I agree that Ford nailed this vehicle’s design and price. Pickups have gotten far too large. I had an S10 extended cab back in the early 1990s as a daily driver… small pickups used to be cheap. Though I was lucky to get 20 mpg even with the 4 cylinder and manual transmission. So it was noisy, slow, and got bad mileage. :-) I have no doubt the hybrid Maverick would have felt like science fiction 30 years ago. Honestly, though, I am not sure I would buy one. Personally, a small SUV/wagon/hatchback serves my needs better… fold down rear seats for longer items, and the ability to carry stuff and keep it clean and dry. In a pickup, groceries also go sliding around in the bed. For your trunk comments, my first thought was a bed cap… but then you essentially have an SUV without fold down seats.. But if one does have the need for an open bed or just prefers a truck, then this is most definitely the right product. Right size, right efficiency, and the right price.
I miss the days when they were actually small pickups. As you stated, right now in my life a mid size SUV handles all my needs including towing a boat and utility trailers and can seat 7 with the third row. It’s a older Honda Pilot but it is surprisingly tough and capable. It’s gets 22mpg which is pretty good for how much room it has and it’s towing capacity. A trailer hauls anything I can’t fit in the back, not as convenient as having a bed but overall much more useful to have the enclosed area with the seats folded down 90% of the time for us.
It's a budget CUV with an open 4x4 trunk, that is styled to look like a mini f150. It has hard plastic but easy care interior like a Fiesta. You can buy it for 25k. If it works it has to be fine for basic use. If, unlike most Fords, it doesn't have a million small recalls and a big transmission flaw cropping up in the next two years....then great.
@@marklihsu if it was built by Toyota with prius parts...however it is a Ford built in Mexico as a 1st run. Only time will tell if it is trouble free. The Flex hybrid was not as solid as the Prius. I have a Fiesta 5sp S model. It is going on 200000 mi with no engine or gearbox problems. If I had bought the automatic I'd have had 10 clutch packs and a TCU replacement by now. Most hybrids are primarily gas engine off at traffic light and extra torque for underpowered ICE motors when needed. Thus the high city mileage, since the ICE motor burns most of it's city fuel at wait and accelerate situations. I think this is the best idea for a small truck, instead of an EV, and I hope Quality is Job 1 at Ford this time.
I think the Maverick name fits this truck much better than that little tin can from the 70’s. I’m not sure how to DM you off this channel but that’s OK since I have no reason to bother a really busy guy.
I read a while back that well over 100,000 pre-orders means that all 2022's are sold out and you will have to wait until 2023 minimum. Although a lot of those might just be dealer orders.
@@tedunguent156 Would fleet vehicles count toward that pre-order count? I've seen more than a handful of White Mavericks rocking their respective county/city seal on the door in my corner of Mid-America. I presume some drivers are pissed about not having an F-150, but most don't care because they aren't paying for the gasoline.
@@GarrettWorcester I don't know about the breakdown of any of the numbers. I just know that a few months ago I read where Ford said that they were not taking any more orders (from dealers) for 2022 Mavericks. They were all sold out.
Ford stopped taking orders for 2022 mavericks right about the middle of Jan 23. I ordered a maverick Dec 1 22 and at that time they had sold out of hybrid engines. Customer ordered vehicles are priced at msrp, and dealers were not allowed to price above that. Dealers were not allowed order stock vehicles because of demand. I put down a $250 fully refundable deposit should I decide not to take delivery. The dealer would then take delivery of it and as owner of the vehicle is free to tack on extra profit. When I ordered mine this dealer had the only one physically in Portland for me to see. It was customer ordered and the customer had backed out on it. It was in the showroom as a demo for sale for $9000 over msrp and would not be released until they had another customer refuse their delivered truck. These trucks are only about 2" longer than my 2003 ranger and about the same weight. My local county park district bought several and for $20k each it's like 2/3 the price they were paying for trucks.
I have a hybrid XLT with no packages and absolutely love it. Between the fuel economy, practicality and price, it's an amazing vehicle. Nice video!
How much was the markup tho??
Hows your experience with the breaks?
@@linvol20 I have a hybrid, it’s true brakes are grabby at low speeds. Also Eco mode doesn’t stay selected after turning off which is super annoying.
Easy pains to live with for everything else right about it!
Yes can not wait for mine!
The only problem is the Focus was a crappie car. let's hope the Maverick is not the same.
@@musicauthority7828 I have had over 15 cars in my life and my Focus has been one of my favorites. It is all in the eye of the beholder.

Great to know, thanks for sharing with everyone
I really like this. I've had two small pickups (Toyota and Isuzu) and did not like the out-of-control growth of newer trucks.
W was you d,r,sxwxxgwz TX zwxsF ex
Toyota needs to bring back the Toyota pick up (mini truck vs their traditional Tacoma). Maybe they can consider a hybrid or a 4 cycled version with improved MPG like this.
@@krazylilman09 The Toyota Hilux fits that bill.
Four cylinder Turbo Diesel with a towing capacity of 7,700 pounds
I've had pickups all of my adult life. Went from a small Nissan Frontier to a Chevy 2500, several different full size service trucks and finally a Tundra. I desperately wanted to go back to a small truck like my old Frontier. Nothing out there so I had given up on getting a replacement truck as I didn't want a gigantic monstrosity of a truck or the second house payment that goes with one! When I saw the Maverick last June I was first in line at my dealership to get one ordered. Exactly what I wanted and needed. Couldn't be happier with the truck.
Always loved the small tricks, Nissan/Datsun, Ford Courier, Toyota, Ford Ranger( first version)…..never had one but always wanted one.
Love the car reviews every week Tom ive been a fan since the New York Times Days
I was able to rent one for an extended weekend (XLT hybrid) and fell in love with it. Drove like a car or small suv, seats were incredibly comfortable and I was AVERAGING 49 MPG! Ready to order a 2023, if I could just decide on the color... 🤔
Order now, change your color later, banks open 2nd week August
Yup. Getting an XL and I’ll add Cruiz control myself and slap 20” and lowering kit on the 2023 Mavi and call it a day. 21.500 delivered Word!!!
Where were you able to rent one? That'd be a great way to test one out!
@@phantom6knight if they release a hybrid awd it’ll be a great seller, it seems that’s the combo most people are asking for

@@DrivenCarReviews my pleasure! it was as true then as it now!!
Got my XLT Hybrid w Lux last week and its been a dream. Such a perfect vehicle
Hey Jim how do you like your Maverick?
Having driven in and around Seattle, this and the Tacoma are the sweet spot for not feeling unwieldy to maneuver downtown.
I was there driving a semi truck with a 40' container and trying to get the I 90 was a pain in the rear. They had an event at the stadium.
re: no lockable trunk.
That's a $2300 bed cover. 😮
Same with my Lightning order, I say 2024 now.
@@henrybrar yeah the demand for that was through the roof also
I ordered mine last August and it's scheduled to be delivered in the next two weeks.
Tonneau cover and plastic tote is what I use… zero issue with not having a trunk.
I've had my Cyber Orange XLT Hybrid for the last few weeks now and I absolutely love it. I don't need AWD so hybrid was a no-brainer for me, which pays off with a consistent 40-50 mpg every trip I take. That's 50/50 city and highway, driving economically.
Just sold my maverick! Love it but couldn’t say no to the trade in offer and needed to get rid of a car payment. Great review! I sure miss mine
Ahhh, that sucks bro.
But it HAS THE POWER to pull VERY WELL.
i like the hybrid, good mileage and no charging needed…
woah...
My XLT hybrid should be delivered this weekend!!
How exciting! You are gonna love it!
The best thing to me, aside from the price and mpg? No. Piano gloss black. At all. THANK GOD!
Good luck!
The upcoming Recession is going to crush so many people.
Which is fine for small items but not large boxes.
Put a roll-up rigid tonneau on it if you’re hung up on this. BAK X4S for example is a beautiful, functional, simple-to-operate solution that keeps the cargo safe and dry. I have one on my Maverick as do many others.
I just got a Hybrid First Edition, love it!
I believe the Comet was Mercurys version of the Maverick
This truck meets my needs as a daily driver. If I need more bed space a 5x8 utility trailer will work.
Reminds me of the old mini trucks of the 80's Would be cool if they made a 2 door 6 foot bed model.
Cant. Unibody
My Red Maverick originally ordered Sept 22, is scheduled to arrive early April 24. Excited!!!
LOVE that color, if I was in the market for a small truck, I would buy a hybrid of this for sure.
Now that the eco boost is $1500 less than the hybrid, I pre-ordered mine, just have to wait......
Love my 2023 Maverick lariat Tremor. Don’t miss my Raptor a bit. Handles much nicer than I expected. :) gets fuel mileage like my Accord.
I really like the maverick especially the hybrid, but the maverick is almost impossible to get and when one is available dealers want 5k+ markup. Which prices it more than santa cruz, and the santa cruz outclassed the maverick in many ways. Which is why I have the santa cruz limted and absolutely love it
No worries I can wait a couple years till they get cheaper and more readily available. Thank you!
Everything was spread out and comfortable for me to reach.
thanks for posting just received my Maverick hybrid waited a year-and-a-half absolute lovin have no idea how long it will last
Nice review.

Oh no, thank you! Much appreciated says the guy who just filled a 911 Turbo S gas tank with premium.
I ordered mine 1 year ago. Still waiting for it to show up.
Great extended review and really love this Maverick, name and all. If I ever end up with a longer commute, I will certainly be seeking out a Hybrid. For gas, I’d probably go with the Santa Cruz, which can tow 5000lbs, which more than good for my Spec Miata on an open trailer.

Just imagine the EcoBoost with AWD in a PHEV format with about a 30 mile electric range. It'd be game over.
Yes I fully agree.
I think what Ford has to offer here is incredible. I only wonder... how durable or long-lasting will the vehicle be?
-
I'm not just any 'naysayer', I was super stoked for the Maverick. Like I said, a Ranger driver for 21 years. But the bed blew the deal. I thought back on all the stuff I was able to fit into a 6' bed, and realized that this 4' bed would have been useless for 75% of what I hauled.
-
I while I "love the look" of the interior (very cool modern vibe), in person, it really does feel cheap. Good looking plastic is still plastic.
-
I am 6'4", the driver seat is "tight". The back seats are barely bigger than the extended cab on my old Ranger.
-
Went with a Ridgeline.
Thanks so much for posting still waiting on my hybrid order in October they say won't be long LOL
One of the best reviews I have seen! Great video
Your reviews are so usable. Fantastic work.
I have the XLT ecoboost in Velocity Blue and LOVE it!
😊 me too!!
Bedankt
Dang, sorry I missed this. Thanks for the contribution!
The resale value is over 35K for a 20Kish model. It is a crazy seller market.
@@opiegonebad58 how did you option your Maverick?
I've had my own 2.0 AWD FX4 4k tow Maverick for just over 6 months now. Love it! It's been perfect. A great everyday driver and does light truck stuff well too. What do you mean, NO trunk? I have a plastic bin in the bed under the tonneau. That is my trunk! LOL
Glad you like it, I couldn’t get comfortable in the seats and was not impressed with the component quality under the vehicle or the wind noise on the highway.
That's why test driving is important.
The Ridgeline is a direct competitor as well. They both have similar payload, bedsize, and towing. Oh yea and both are unibody.
seems good, would love to see a PHEV though if people are going to use these as their 'daily driver'
utility is off the chart, it's a winner
2022 ordering is done and used ones around me are selling for nearly $10k over what would be new MSRP, I guess you could say it's popular.
I agree with everything you say Robert,
I would love to see a plug-in hybrid or electric version of the Maverick.
I think a plug-in hybrid is possible. It's based off the Escape I think and they offer a PHEV Escape so maybe...
I read the other day that the PHEV is for sure coming likely in the 2024 model year when they will offer the Bronco Sport as a hybrid & PHEV. However the article also said an EV variant could come but it's just in the talking stage right now.
I’d buy an electric one in a heartbeat!
Plug in hybrid would be brilliant, full electric around town and the gas engine when needed. Seems like a perfect vehicle for that application.
I ordered a unicorn in Feb of 2022 and now I am waiting on the build for my 2023
Yes someone in a parking lot called my Mav a unicorn!
Wow.
Great review as always. This sure is a very interesting product.
best hidden gen , I love My hybrid lariat 10k miles and smooth driving still
Great Review. Felt Very 90s Motorweek. Loved it.
The only thing is the Focus is a crappie car. let's hope this not the same.
I look forward to ordering a Maverick, come August! So excited! ♥️
Like video, I have a hybrid XLT fwd hot pepper red on order, should be delivered between July 9 and July 15. I like the hot pepper red the best.
talking about dealer markup...
The hybrid is the same system as the Prius so pretty bulletproof
Really looking forward to these being available to normal people, at or below MSRP...
