It would’ve been a legend right along side the LFA I swear
Who cares...we never even got the V8 in consumer cars thanks to brain-dead tree-huggers...that's the real kick in the nuts.
@@thebananamelon5065 the LFA was a masterpiece of engineering. It was literally a perfect engine, with a car built around it. The materials in the engine, the materials in the car...the doors, windows, buttons etc...where engineered to vibrate on the same frequency as the pistons, crankshaft, connecting rods. Only F1 cars of the 90s-late 2000s can match that perfect sound

Man... Mk4 Supras, R34 GTR Nismo's and Honda NSX's all racing on the same grid... A Heavenly sight.
Eh I find them boring, I'm more interested in the weirder less common cars in JGTC. The NSXs and RX7s are my favorite of the popular picks tho.

From what I can gather with this strange car in super GT is basically:
"is it a road car based GT car or a bespoke prototype?"
Honda: "yesn't"
Organizers: “Ok, you're in! 👍”
“The car is ready for production, all we gotta do is say yes”
Super GT: “ok good enough, youre in”
Honestly this part of the comment section remains of Oversimplified
It kinda blows my mind that the very first JGTC race was held on the same weekend when Ayrton Senna dies at Imola...
Fun fact:
For those who did not know what happened with that RA302 F1 car, well... it was horrific. In 1968 Honda planned on replacing the less-than-successful RA301 with the lighter RA302 made from magnesium. Thing is, magnesium alloys are a bit... sparky. Even the lightest of spark will set magnesium on fire. And dousing water made thing even worse simply because magnesium is in the same bracket as lithium, kalium and natrium. All extremely reactive. John Surtees took a look at the RA302 and said it's a death trap, immediately refusing to race with it. So the memo went to Honda and they told Honda Racing not to race with it... except that they forgot to tell Soichiro about it during French Grand Prix, so Honda's French arm decided to draft Jo Schlesser to drive it at Rouen. On lap 2 he crashed. Jo, the magnesium car, and litres of racing fuel immediately went up in flames. It was so hot that firefighters can't even get close to put down the fire. It is said the driver can smell the burning human flesh as they went lap after lap after lap while the fire still burning, melting the tarmac. After John Surtees once again refused to drive the RA302, Honda pulled out as manufacturer in F1 until 2006.
One of Jo Schlesser's friend was a man named Guy Ligier, a former tractor magnate leading a company called Ligier Travaux Publics, and racing with him in WSC under Ford France banner. He also raced in F1, but after Jo was baked Guy retired and instead ran his own racing team and racing car manufacturer, Equipe Ligier. Since then all his cars bear the initial of Jo Schlesser, such as Ligier JS43 that won 1996 Monaco GP with Olivier Panis and Ligier JSP217 LMP2 racer. Nowadays Ligier, as part of Onroak Automotive, build JS2R junior GT racecar, JSP320 LMP3 racers and also building Lamborghini SC63 LMDh racecars.
Narain winning the MR NSX's last race is honestly a 1 of 10000 chance occurrance
I don't know what kind of twist of fate it is that just last night, while I was looking up obscure cars (namely the Vector cars), my mind drifted back to Gran Turismo and I thought "man, I wonder if Roflwaffle would be interested in doing videos about some of GT's strangest cars".
And here we are.
29:22 Both the ARTA HSV and CR-Z flashing their lights as they're finishing is surprisingly wholesome. It's like finishing a marathon with your little brother.
more surprising was 911 and SLS behind the CR-Z 😂
Fun fact, VTEC originates from their motorcycle tech! And the precursor, REV, was also something they made for motorcycles.
Whoa did not know this. Thank you for the fun fact!
W comment hearing about rev for the first time
It's easier to test something on a smaller scale then adopt it to a much larger one, so it's make sense
Yeah it totally explains the high rev factor as well. 😂
@@georgesanchez8051 Honda is an engine builder first and foremost. BMW engines also have the same impact.
Honda was working on both the V10-powered "NB" NSX and a rwd v8 platform that was to be utilized by Acura. However the new CEO, Ito Takanobu, canceled both projects. In its place we got the unwanted NC NSX with its ttv6 hybrid that nobody cared about, and the continuation of the underwhelming FWD Acura lineup.
I remember how everyone was looking forward to the V10 NSX when it was first spotted on the Nordschleife, only for bitter disappointment to take over after news of the cancelation.
As soon as the Lotus Emira came out I said "That's what the 3rd NSX should have been", since it follows the original NSX philosophy far closer than Honda did (driver appeal over tech and outright performance).
@@deanchurI would argue the C8 Corvette is more like what the new NSX should’ve been. Simple, practical and affordable.
I'd argue that both of you are correct. It should have been a high performance car (like the c8) and one that was driver oriented, like the Lotus. Hell, the NB NSX was going to be a mixture of the R35 GTR and the LFA. There's no way that it would not have been appealing. But that's not what we got, sadly.
The V6 twin turbo NSX that no one cared about.
but they sold them for 10 years, they sold more than they expected, and they always sold out.
It's a practical, usable, everyday supercar. The latest gen NSX is genuinely the epitome of Honda.
It would have been cool to see a nsx compete with The Lexus LFA, and a smaller V8 Honda compete with the Lexus coupes. That was not in the cards unfortunately.
@@DrivingGod21 what the fuck are you smoking? I work for Honda and they totally missed the mark with the new NSX. First of all, they hyped up the car in 2012 and it didn’t come out for 5 YEARS! Second, it was only on sale for 5 years and dealers in North America couldn’t move them fast enough and were sitting in lots, hence why you barely see one on the road. Third, people just went on and bought R8’s and Corvettes instead because they were far more affordable and practical and had V8’s and V10’s instead of a hybrid hiding. Nobody cares for Honda’s hybrid sports cars. The CRZ is another prime example.
i was super confused when this thing first showed up during Super GT testing. kept thinking "what the bloody hell is that?"
21:43 can't be a Roflwaffles vid about Super GT without the JLOC Lamborghini
It is inevitable.
Lmao, nice eye! I like that funky thing.
As a German I am ashamed to this day that DTM pushed for (presumably, not entirely sure though) a common regulation with SuperGT only to dissolve into a GT3 series. They pushed back the introduction of the turbo engines and Mercedes didn't even produced one. It's a huge let down.

But seriously, the day I saw this on YT back on that day in 2010 during it's test days, I fell in love with it, the sound, look, the everything.
Man I remember watching those are YT years ago as well! Shame Class 1 killed what made Super GT unique. I still watch it though.
I remember seeing the black prototype too. Thing of beauty that was, reminded me of "what feels like an IRL S2000 GT1 from Gran Turismo 2", but also "what could be the next NSX maybe?"

The Civic Type R GT looks pretty cool.
The Civic is Honda's money machine, so it's a natural progression, Honda should however offer a RWD to the public. I'd be all over it
It kinda blows my mind that the very first JGTC race was held in the same weekend as the 1994 San Marino GP... The darkest weekend in F1...
FINALLY someone acknowledges this thing exists! The NSX that never was
Both good and bad. As I kinda wish this could exist alongside the nsx and not as its replacement.
It says alot about the modern NSX that I didn't even know it was sold in 2020, let alone that it had an updated look
That exhaust note and tone, utterly exquisite, I don't think I've heard a better V8 in years possibly ever!
You haven't. Those exhaust notes were sent from Heaven. Never knew a V8 can sing that perfectly!
You can tell that there is a lot of passion and effort put into these kinds of videos and it makes it so much better to watch them. I'm honestly loving this and appreciate you doing these videos for people like me that only really know the cars from Gran Turusmo and know almost nothing about them or the motorsport in general.
This should be the Gen 2 NSX all along…
Watching that 2018 season and seeing Naoki Yamamoto and Jenson Button make that NSX-GT dance on track was amazing that thing looked so elegant in battle can’t wait to see the Civic Type-R GT carry the mantle
Honda and Stillborn projects, name a more Iconic duo *Looks at the Acura ARX-01A and its cancelled Indycar engine*
IMO Honda seems to like to think their size and financial power is just as strong as Toyota, even though they are not, that's probably why so many of their projects and promises end up in the scrap bin.
Or brawn, even. Lmao, Mercades' entire f1 dominance stems from Honda bringing in Ross Brawn, quitting, brawn winning and being bought by Merc, and Ross and Michael building from there.
Amazing vid. Enjoyed every second of it. Never thought I'd be getting such high quality JGTC content on YT. PS: loved the J-rock bgm at the end. Nostalgic vibe.
And here I am wanting roflwaffle to make Super GT season reviews because I love the way they cover the subject
It's pretty cool that you do vids on JGTC/Super GT, since it's not that well known outside of Japan, but many people would likely want to know more thanks to Gran Turismo.
I found it really interesting that the GT500 cars, during the time frame between the end of life of the NSX and the HSV, they were as dominant if not more so than LMP1 cars. Which I thought was super interesting and really want to see a GT500 car race Le Mans as a Garage 56 entry (Like the NASCAR that did the 2023 race).
Sadly, super GT cars don't appear on GT Games and most modern racing games anymore
it probably licensing, or it's just today's gen lost interest into the super GT sport itself, even in japan, half of them were cut off & never come back & i think PD don't care bringing most of them back
なるほど🤔
Right, now can you also describe the SC430? Or GT500 cars which has road versions that look the furthest from sportscar possible?
Was coincidentally watching one of your older videos and then this popped up. Keep up the good work!
You all should see Aussie Sports sedans Racing, its the real Forza Horizon online lobby race series that included a 1000hp R32 Skyline on Mount Panorama.
That was a combined saloon car race. Made up of up to a dozen racing classes.
@@fbboringstuff thanks for the correction, we need people to see this race series
No way! I was waiting for the longest time for someone to make a documentary about this car. It was always so mysterious to me, from the euphoric sound of an engine to the way it looks. And you've certainly delivered. Thank you very much!
The Honda that i always wondered how would it look like if it was a road car.
36:49 no waaaaaay, a technology from GAZ-3102
As a sportscar racing fan its still odd to me how Loic Duval was a Honda ace before driving for Peugeot and Audi.
Man, I just entered to watch a video about a curious Honda car and I ended up falling in love even more with Honda, epic.
PD: you can take my like for putting Yummy Trip at the end of the video.
YT just happen to reccomend this video.
The amount of detail present and pace of it made me subscribe. Brilliant!
Keep it up man!
Ooh I'm here for the deep dives on Gran Turismo vehicles, especially ones not in GT7 yet!
Remember Honda HSV being featured in GT5. Because of the shape of the car I knew that the Acura NSX Gen 2 was based off of that car. Thankfully nothing was wasted from the prototype when they made the new NSX
0:31 Glad to see the Chapparal 2J getting some recognition.
This video shows how the HSV Arc was a blessing in diguise and that merging DTM and Super GT Regulations was the worst mistake ever.
Omfg!!!! This was my favorite car in gt6🔥🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥🗣🔥
i think i can add a bit more to honda's gt500 lore:
1. even if honda had the best chassis with the hsv, it also had the most drag. and the culprit was… the single exhaust. because honda had to run one pipe to the rear while nissan and lexus didn't, they were forced to run more rear wing angle to compensate for narrower diffuser. so for 2013 honda started putting duals on non-factory cars (kunimitsu, real and nakajima) while fartory cars (arta, dome) ran singles until midway through the season
2. honda ra615h "gp2 engine" was developed alongside honda hr414e. at one point during its development, honda benched the two and found the hr414e made more power than ra615h. the exact figure is unknown but since it's ra615h the bar to pass was pretty low
3. the nsx-concept gt was probably the worst class 1 gt500 ever. the aero was horrible, the weight distribution was messed up, the hybrid system was nerfed with ballast and honda hr414e wasn't the most powerful engine on the gt500 field. when the hybrid was removed in 2016, it only made things worse. the already messed up weight balance was even more apparent, the hybrid dependent engine was even more down on power, the aero wasn't good enough and my personal highlight of nsx-concept gt was finishing their final race in motegi dead last. 5 cars, 11th to 15th. so yeah 2020 was their redemption to 2016
4. as rofl mentioned the introduction of pcsi in 2017 was a big moment not only for honda but for gt500 as a whole. this was the time when engines allegedly made no less than 700 hp with the most powerful making 750 hp. lmp1 engine made 250 hp less and f1 made about the same power, both without hybrid system (ice only)
5. moving the engine forward wasn't that hard for honda. all they had to do was revised the cooling and opened channels on bumper and bonnet. the engine, gearbox and ecu can be carried over since they're standardised parts. toray's class 1 tub was modified to fit midships but they were built with front midship in mind. as such engine space in midship configuration was always tight
It's a good thing to have a channel with this much info about Super GT, I wasn't aware of many of these facts and events
0:15 F1 2015 ost is so underrated
might be 2016, still same composer
Another cracking video, fabulous story telling and editing. Really enjoying these real world racing video essays. Great work mate.
Thank you so much for putting these videos out, getting to see these SUPER GT/JGTC stamps in time are awesome to watch. For those of us in the US, we really only knew of JGTC/SUPER GT either through Gran Turismo or if you lived in California i believe they did one exhibition race there. The quality of the highlights and the scope of the backstory you add is top notch.
17:43 to 17:51 you can make any automobile enthusiast literally bust one at that heavenly sound, when you reminds of how badass it use to sounds that in F1 cars.

Seriously well made documentary, with well versed historical details that ties the whole story together
Man. Honda really won’t give up if they lose or win. And that’s something I like. Learn from the good and bad and keep going. So let’s see how the Civic GT500 goes this year.
Love these jgtc/super gt videos! Both generations of this series for some reason sparked in me, possibly because of the class one regs and also the plentiful quirky gt300 cars, hopefully in the absence in the class 1 regs we get regs that maintain that awesome visual of gt500 cars, thanks for the high quality production man
This is such a good video dude, great work! Was really cool listening to Honda's Super GT story lol - like finding out about the history behind all the cool looking gt500 hondas (honda is my favourite brand lol). Also makes me wanna watch super gt even more lol.
Cool video, I think one of the side note in their Super GT runs in recent years was Jenson Button, a F1 WDC, won a Super GT title also as teammate to Naoki Yamamoto in the NSX in 2018....
VTEC has nothing to do with fuel efficiency. It’s a way to have drivability at low revs while still maximizing power at high revs. It’s basically two engines in one: a tractable high torque engine down low and a screaming high-hp one up top. Genius.
What a great video. Didn't even notice its almost an hour long. First video seen from this channel. Subbed.
Love this video, Roflwaffle! I’m a Honda guy through and through. On civic #4 and absolutely love it. Thank you for this video and info!

Who would have thought that Gran Turismo could be responsible for the evolution of a GT TH-cam channel this much.
Love the fact that the testing cars with the OF license plate mean they were fully road legal in Germany, which is also a requirement for driving on the Nürburgring outside of race competition
Man, after seeing this, and having researched a little bit into it some years ago, I kinda want to know more about team Dome, being them a classic team in Super Gt and having produce some concepts of their own, like the Zero, or the S102 Lmp. As always, great video!
ahh finally, after a long wait, HSV-010
Narain's case is very similar to Danica Patric's. She was great Indy driver but she couldn't achieve anything in NASCAR. So I assume F1 wasn't for Narain. Different vechicle, different driving so GT cars seem better for him.
That satin black HSV looks so much better than the 2019 Acura NSX does. It's a shame it never went into production.
Honda is wild. They made great cars like the 3rd Gen Prelude and the original NSX Type R, and the world's most daring motorcycles imo.
It really shows SuperGT's draw that I could notice some familiar names who were and are well known in endurance racing, such as Loic Duval and Benoit Trèluyer (Le Mans winners with Audi) and Frederic Makowiecki (Porsche factory driver in GTE/now LMDh)!
Awesome video. Very lovely stuff. Cannot wait to see how the new Civic GT500 would perform.
I know this video is Honda-related but, I have a little side note/update in regards to your previous Super GT video:
Team Impul will no longer have the Calsonic Blue and will be replaced by Marelli's darker shade of blue starting this coming Super GT season. Thus, completely ending an era for Team Impul's signature look.
Thank you for the great video! I never was into japanese gt racing but HSV-010 caught my eye when it was first unveiled and its great to finally hear the fascinating story behind it
This was a fantastic video! As a CR-Z owner it was cool seeing the HSV next to one lol, I'll definitely be watching the other Super GT videos!
Another great video keep up the great work, and I see you're a man of culture as well supporting ( the best race series and manufactures) SUPER GT and Honda ; hopefully we can talk shop one day
Gotta love how those Honda NSXs at the start were almost all in various Gran Turismos ❤ in fact, most of those GT cars were in GT. A shocking revelation!
Been a fellow Honda supporter ever since I saw that Castrol Mugen NSX and the Takata Dome NSX in GT4. Especially the latter with its roof air intake looked so unique compared to the other cars in its class (in GT4).
The first gen NSX is actually still my absolute dream car.

Excellent presentation RW!
Thanks for the trip down memory lane, I'm just a little envious I wasn't old enough to appreciate GT500 and GT300 outside of Gran Turismo in my youth!
And as a long time Honda fan, they're just in a weird place today where there's a (by all accounts) brilliant Civic Type R - but there is no Prelude, no S2000 and no NSX to sit above it.
I suppose they get credit for bringing back the Integra name after two decades of forgetting it existed, but it feels very underwhelming.
I still wouldn't mind owning an S660 though!
I love that you make GT videos and Super GT videos now! Kinda feels like how there's Mario games and Super Mario games, but completely different.
This was my favorite race car growing up. Glad to know it wasn't forgotten
Speaking of Honda in motorsports is their impact on North American motorsports. Under the Acura badge with the ARX Prototypes LMP1, LMP2, DPI, and LMDh racing series like ALMS and the IMSA Sports Car Championship.
Hey rofl. Maybe one day you can make a video about the early gran turismo super cars like vector and lister? I feel like i never would have known about them if it werent for those early games. I think it would be a cool subject to shed some light on since we dont really see them around anymore. Just an idea.
