Hey guys, hoped you all enjoyed this one! There’s just something I want to add here, because I couldn’t really fit it into the video but I know other people will be thinking the same thing, which is that - it is an absolute crime that the GT300 Prius never appeared in a Gran Turismo game. I know that I uploaded a video last week talking about how these types of race cars often get overlooked in GT, but even still it’s exactly the type of quirky and interesting car that used to appear in those games. Back when it was still racing, I was all but convinced that we would see it in Gran Turismo eventually, but it just never happened. Sadly this is more of a reflection on how Super GT / JGTC and Gran Turismo - which used to be almost synonymous with each other - have kind of drifted apart over time. Seriously - we’ve only had two new JAF GT300 cars in these games in the past 15 years, and if you discount Subaru BRZs, literally none. And the latest GT500s we have are from 2016 - that’s practically ancient history at this point! Maybe I’ll make a video discussing that topic further one day, but in case you’re wondering, to date the GT300 Prius has only made a single videogame appearance in any form. It featured in SEGA World Drivers Championship - an officially licenced Super GT arcade racer from 2017 where both the 2017 and 2016 versions of the car are included (see here: th-cam.com/video/i1GqKBVh2j4/w-d-xo.html)
I love imagining a GT300 driver who drove a Huracan or R8 going home to his wife, she asked “How was the race today?” And his response being “Got overtaken by a Prius”.
The wife would've slapped him... After all, Roflwaffle did beat a GT World Championship with a tuned Suzuki GSX R4 against some GT300/touring cars, so... yeah.
@HerrZenki Hmm, Tsuchiya and Orido mentioned or spotted in separate Roflwaffle videos... I wonder if Roflwaffle is going to do a Tsuchiya "story of" thing.. That would be epic.
Hatsune Miku liveried Mercedes and BMWs, Toyota Priuses, Honda CR-Zs and Bentley Continentals racing each other. Only in Japan stuff like this is considered normal.
SCCA GT-1 rules are basically: 1. You need the stock roof from a production car, (Yes, just cut it off and build a racecar underneath it.) 2. You need a pushrod V8 with a 4-barrel carburetor, and a maximum displacement of 390ci. 3. The roof and the engine need to be made by the same company. That third one is the fun part. Let's say you have a 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse. Mitsubishi don't make a pushrod V8. (That I'm aware of? It wouldn't surprise me if they did at some point.) Well, you're in luck, because at the same time your Eclipse was being built, Chrysler was working with Mitsubishi. Which means you can pull the drivetrain out of an old Plymouth Duster, build a steel spaceframe racecar chassis, build a nice sleek fiberglass body, slap that Eclipse roof on top of it, and BOOM! As far as the SCCA is concerned, this unholy abomination you've created is - for all intents and purposes - a 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse. So a Prius - a car designed for maximum fuel efficiency - would actually be the PERFECT silhouette racer. And you know who has connections with Toyota? Chevrolet. Which means you could run any GM Small Block V8.
Thank you. That intro had my eyes spinning, because everyone with half a brain knows the name, and apparantly the roof, is the only commonality these race cars share with their road version.
So are you saying that Toyota put the Prius in Trans am? That would be like Audi’s 200 in 1988. Granted Ta is basically dead (ta2 isn’t) but it would be funny.

Make me wonder how a Diesel Hybrid would do, there would be some challenges considering soot from the diesel accumulating conserning DPF/EGR system and so on, but looking at the MB C class i have that can easily reach under 5l/100km (would be 35 liters for 700km)
We Americans had the Powerpuff Girls in NASCAR... TWICE. 1998 with Jerry Nadeau (9, for a few races) and 2000 with Wally Dahlenbach Jr. (75, only at the Daytona 500)

I grew up hating the Prius and then dated a girl that owned one and I drove it a lot. Fell in love with it. And bought one for myself. It's not fast but it drives nice and is amazing on gas and maintenance.
8:26 For those wondering this is the Toyota Supra HV-R. Not the Toyota Supra HRV. It's a simple mistake but it made it so much harder for me to look it up when I wanted to learn more about it. Any search terms with HRV and Hybrid just gives the Honda HRV Hybrid and any search terms with Toyota Supra Hybrid just give speculation about Supras going Hybrid from like 2014.
I was listening to this video through earbuds and work, and had to stifle a chuckle at the phrase "Hatsune Miku Mercedes." Racing a Prius in Super GT reminded me of the time Volvo decided to race the 850 estate in the BTCC back in the day (mid 90s?).
ngl, the current gen Toyota Prius, the way they redesigned it, actually looks like a pretty nice car. And they gave the stock one a big HP increase. I actually think the idea for a GR Prius actually doesn't seem that far-fetched.
Your videos are what got me into Super GT. Me and my gf have watched every race so far this season and it's been by far the highlight of my racing calendar. Thanks, Rofl.

Yeah sure, the only production bits were none other than some grills, headlights or the carbon fibre shells in which ‘pretends’ to have a similar look/shapes with their road-going counterparts…but that’s the beauty of it….cause underneath these things are basically: a prototype race cars.
My dad had a 2014 Prius+ as his taxi car of choice and he was pretty happy with it, it was durable, its fuel efluency was nuts(althoug my father did modify the gas tank to also accept GLP as fuel) but it had a pretty good acceleration and my father could go into 150kph easily in the highway. He switched into a Nissan Ariya last year because the car was going to have 10 years and the switch from a hybrid into an electric car has been also good for him, although the new car was more expensive than the old one since it's an electric suv. Funilly enough, I felt more comfy in the Prius+ than in the Ariya although I've ridden that car like two times but tbh, I'm a tall guy.
The Super GT Prius will always live in my head rent-free. You can never go wrong with the prospect of bringing what people dub as the most hated car for whichever their reason is to a racing series. It was amazing to see.

Love these obscure JGTC/Super GT retrospectives! Personally, I find it sad that GT300 oddities auch as the Prius have been legislated out of existence in favour of the more ubiquitous "mass production" GT3 cars. But that's true of nearly all motorsport series now
Speaking of the Prius GT which races in GT300. I think it'll be a great video to cover some of the weird & awesome cars from GT300. GT500 always gets the spotlight but GT300 honestly has far more variety & uniqueness that gives Super GT as a whole its charm
Just a sign of where racing is going. Out wth the interesting. The fun. The out of the box. In with the slog of GT3, electrification, and boredom. I want to see rulebooks favoring the oddballs. The weird and wonderful.
I actually think that the Prius looks kinda cool (very aerodynamic as well) with design cues that wouldn’t be THAT out of place for a performance car. Just gotta make it lower and wider, with larger tires to make the proportions look right…and lo and behold the Super GT GT300 Prius does just that…also Super GT always has the coolest looking bodykits on production-based cars…with some (including the GT300 Prius and GT500 R35 GT-R (2008-13)) even reminding me of late Gen 4 NASCAR cars with how the nose looks like it’s practically grinding against the pavement…
Now that you mentioned it, Super GT also have "tyre war" aside from the usual manufacturers and drivers championship. It's a really exciting racing series. Sadly it's quite hard to find a lot of coverage for it.
This is why Super GT / JGTC was so interesting, the biggest appeal for the series was the variety and freedom to create vastly different cars, and get some results in the process. From McLaren F1s to SC430s to Prius to even the amazing HSV, you could watch literally anything have a go at it. And they all looked cool. Best sounding Super GT ever has to go to the HSV, but you could make a case for Nob Taniguchi´s Z4 GT3 (another gorgeous car in the Hatsune Miku livery). Now, with the DTM joint deal they´ve got going on, it seems we will also lose that variety. It´s really sad.
i went from hating the prius to liking the prius, honestly hybrids are kinda cool now and the last two generations of prius have been pretty good looking cars. The latest prius would look great as a gt3 car.
The best "in real life" Priri were the 2-door coupe, and the 4-door wagon for their looks. But adding a mid-mounted V-8 would have been killer as a daily driver!
Here me out, a mid engined AWD Toyota Prius that combines the LFA's V10 engine with electric motors and uses the AWD system from the Toyota GR Corolla and the active aero bits from the SRT Tomahawk.
Always had a soft spot for the Prius and the CRZ, bonkers cars that had no business being on track but did so and were damn cool doing it. I did read that when the whole class 1 touring car stuff was being worked on, a lot of the teams running GT3 machinery like the lambos wanted the Prius banned as it was hurting the image of these prestige european brands to be passed by a Prius out on track. Real shame to hear that the timing not lining up on the production of the 5th gen Prius robbed us of the continuation of Priuses? Prii? in superGT but neat to know they still race a hybrid even if it isn't a Prius
I don't know how interested you'd be in making a video on it, but in all of these SuperGT videos I've always found the presence of the Hatsune Miku/Goodsmile team incredibly distracting and funny and I'd love to know just how it came about and what their whole deal is and how they tend to place.
Ngl, now I want toyota to have the option to have your car be tuned by TRD and be fitted with a decent race looking bodykit just to keep the gt spirit of the prius alive or something. It might just have 230-260 HP (after tuning) but, atleast you look cool driving a already gorgeous prius.
Great Video! This is why I love the series, these odd cars turned into racing machines. Especcialy the gt300 machinery has always fascined me. Unfortunatly I am struggling to find good footage about these cars on YT.
Thanks for the video, really glad I found this channel. In Ukraine Prius is most known as police car, so we can see this cars patrolling every day. But video vibe has made me think of Prius like race car, not police one:)
I would love to see you make a video on the Japanese makes that only appeared in GT300 like Mazda, Subaru, and Mitsubishi. Maybe even throw Vemac and ASL in there too.
every prius driver i knew bought it because they thought it was ecologically friendly, then realized the "eco" more stood for economical, and liked the gas savings, despite the fact that it had two engines, was made of plastic, and was kida heavy and got terrible milage on hills. not super environmentally friendly compared to, say, my 2000 S2000. granted, i got better gas milage in my S2000 by driving everywhere in 5th gear, but whatever lol
really love you research on such a hard to find topics, would love a video on modern gt500 cars and how are they developed to reach similar lap times to current le mans hyperclass, its a shame no current racing game has full roster of japan gt championship
Honestly, this has a similar energy to the Volvo 850 estate racing in the BTCC in 1994. Only the Toyota was much more successful. A car which surely no-one in their right mind would think 'yeah, that'll be a successful racing car', yet some madlads decided to give it a shot anyway. Pretty cool looking car though. It is a little odd seeing 4-door cars in a GT series like Super GT though, given that I associate them more with Touring Car series like the BTCC or Supercars (not that the latter uses 4-door cars these days).
I had a 2009 Prius for a few years, and I honestly loved that car. I regret selling it in all reality, it was just a damn good car. Who cares about how slow it was? I got 50mpg on my work commute, and I was damn pleased with it. When I first learned of the GT300 car, I fell in love. I can see myself getting a 4th gen or plug-in 5th gen as a new daily eventually; I just prefer how the Toyota hybrids drive. I replaced the 2nd gen prius with a 3rd gen Insight; it's faster, and it's not a bad car, but after driving another Toyota hybrid again I really want to go back... Either way, I love hybrids because of how exceptionally practical they are. Anyways, Hatsune Miku car next?
Honestly, I always prefer GT300, there're so many interesting cars participating in this class that it just never gets boring or stale like other series.
While apr's undoubtedly known and good at their mid engine design, their front-engine design is also as interesting in my opinion, and one that does have successes. The thing with apr is that their front engined cars has a signature look. Very thick on the front yet slim and thin at the back, since it's all bespoke chassis and not based on a production one. Other than the GR86 GT300, they also has a part in building the Supra GT300, which also has that signature bulky front end. Saitama Green Brave won in 2023, so technically a front-engine car that has apr involvement has won a championship.

I really need to start following Japanese GT racing full time, the stories coming out of it are wild
i went from hating the prius to liking the prius, honestly hybrids are kinda cool now and the last two generations of prius have been pretty good looking cars. The latest prius would look great as a gt3 car.
The best "in real life" Priri were the 2-door coupe, and the 4-door wagon for their looks.
But adding a mid-mounted V-8 would have been killer as a daily driver!
the stock prius was sh*t but when u put those Wide super GT bodykit. the prius is something else and looks agressive. 🔥🔥🔥
i wish this toyota prius were in racing games, i think they would had been even more popular if they were in racing games
1:50 Wait that's a CR-Z on steroids 😂
this is the most unhinged racing series of all time i gotta watch this
This is why Super GT is my favourite series, epic cars
Hatsune miku my beloved
YAKUZA 3 FLY DETECTED
Hear me out. Volkswagen scirocco. They worked with audi, bmw etc. Under the series rules, we could do a funny
Here me out, a mid engined AWD Toyota Prius that combines the LFA's V10 engine with electric motors and uses the AWD system from the Toyota GR Corolla and the active aero bits from the SRT Tomahawk.
GR Prius Prime?

Love the CR-Z getting attention in this video. Very funny production car, would love any sort of video on it!
21:38 someone should do a meme about the merc back there
Always had a soft spot for the Prius and the CRZ, bonkers cars that had no business being on track but did so and were damn cool doing it.
23:11 only in this series a Prius defends against a Hatsune Miku Mercedes
Always a good day when there's fresh waffles on the plate
I don't know how interested you'd be in making a video on it, but in all of these SuperGT videos I've always found the presence of the Hatsune Miku/Goodsmile team incredibly distracting and funny and I'd love to know just how it came about and what their whole deal is and how they tend to place.
It's worth noting that in 2016, the #30 Prius ran at Thailand without its hybrid system.
Well you gotta give it to Toyota Gazoo Racing for making this car cool. 👍 At least from its WRC perspective.
Babe wake up new rofflwaffle video just dropped
I was watching top gear before this I was so confused-
Yessss I requested this video months ago! Hopefully the CRZ is in here too...!
0:25 has everyone forgotten the Fiat Multipla?
the GTA3 intro just hits too hard at the start, can't take it
Prius was the post-yuppie yuppie car.
All these car's need to be in GT7 😊
Ngl, now I want toyota to have the option to have your car be tuned by TRD and be fitted with a decent race looking bodykit just to keep the gt spirit of the prius alive or something.
It might just have 230-260 HP (after tuning) but, atleast you look cool driving a already gorgeous prius.
Great Video! This is why I love the series, these odd cars turned into racing machines. Especcialy the gt300 machinery has always fascined me. Unfortunatly I am struggling to find good footage about these cars on YT.
choosing a prius just to not put a hybrid system might be one of the most unexplainable decisions made
To be honest, thank you for letting us know about the amazing Motorsport in Japan!
Really love your motorsport history videos, keep it up ROFL!
Thanks for the video, really glad I found this channel.
In Ukraine Prius is most known as police car, so we can see this cars patrolling every day. But video vibe has made me think of Prius like race car, not police one:)
Great video I enjoyed watching the Toyota Prius history in GT racing.
I would love to see you make a video on the Japanese makes that only appeared in GT300 like Mazda, Subaru, and Mitsubishi. Maybe even throw Vemac and ASL in there too.
Working at an auto auction, I rarely see a Prius below 250k miles that has major problems
i've always disliked the GT3 pandemic in GT300 and DTM
I've seen them now. Many teams have use the GT3 cars from FIA.
The ridge racer music gave me nostalgia
every prius driver i knew bought it because they thought it was ecologically friendly, then realized the "eco" more stood for economical, and liked the gas savings, despite the fact that it had two engines, was made of plastic, and was kida heavy and got terrible milage on hills. not super environmentally friendly compared to, say, my 2000 S2000.
granted, i got better gas milage in my S2000 by driving everywhere in 5th gear, but whatever lol
really love you research on such a hard to find topics, would love a video on modern gt500 cars and how are they developed to reach similar lap times to current le mans hyperclass, its a shame no current racing game has full roster of japan gt championship
14:35 I don't know why but ridge racer music always makes me laugh
23:15 (mentions hatsune miku mercedes), me: "the WHAT ?"(immediately rewinds video)
Hey! Thumbnail changed!
Kinda crazy how this prius can be faster than a gt3 r35 gtr
Honestly, I always prefer GT300, there're so many interesting cars participating in this class that it just never gets boring or stale like other series.
21:38 What happened to that Mercedes in back? Lmao
Looking for this comment cuz bro went flying into that wall
While apr's undoubtedly known and good at their mid engine design, their front-engine design is also as interesting in my opinion, and one that does have successes.
The thing with apr is that their front engined cars has a signature look. Very thick on the front yet slim and thin at the back, since it's all bespoke chassis and not based on a production one.
Other than the GR86 GT300, they also has a part in building the Supra GT300, which also has that signature bulky front end. Saitama Green Brave won in 2023, so technically a front-engine car that has apr involvement has won a championship.
i didn't know in super car form it would look this nice!
