Genie Garage Door Opener Install with One Person (EASY)

  • My old crusty, loud, unreliable, without remote controls garage door opener finally bit the dust. After months of dealing with it, a I found a great deal (value wise) on a garage door opener that fit my needs of security and convenience. That opener was the Genie SilentMax Connect Smart Garage System with Aladdin Connect. I bought the model with a belt driven system rather than a pulley, or auger style simple because a belt is the quietest of the bunch.

Also, my garage door opening is 7 feet tall. If it was larger, I'd need to buy a extension to allow the door to open all the way. amzn.to/41BsPGY

Wow, what a great video. I will be installing an opener just like this. It was nice just watching you put all the pieces together. It gives me an idea of what i will be having to do. Really loved the music😊 it was very relaxing to listen to as i watched you work. Also the end of the video was nice too, seeing the kids playing in the water..It brought tears to my eyes 😢 Reminds me of my childhood, and how fast life goes by. My wife and i were not able to have children. We should always be grateful for the small blessings in life. You have a beautiful family and you are a lucky, and blessed man. ❤

Just bought this. Thankfully the previous owner had installed the brackets so I didn’t have to mess with that. Just put it all together and then hung it up.
FYI this video was 10x better than the manufacturers install video.

Awesome video! Parents are getting older now and they’ve had a manual for their whole life. I think this year my dad will be getting one of these for his birthday. Video has perfect detail, and with that music in the background; how could anybody want to drop an F bomb during this project. I love the American Dream ending with the family! Great touch.

I have an already installed Liftmaster chain I want to change to this genie belt, do you always have to remove and replace the carrier bracket above the garage door like you did?.. Pro tip, don't level the rail. It causes excessive force on the top panel. The rail should be 1.5 inch above the top panel when the door is open. It will slant down from the header to the motor head. Otherwise a clean install for a diy :). 18 years in the garage door industry.

Thanks for posting. I just installed the same Genei replacing similar to what you had, a 29 year old Craftsmen using your video as a guide. The only thing that took some extra time was having to move my original mounting bracket up 8-10 inches since the Genie is a little shorter. I was hoping to bypass the sensors but the garage door wouldn't go down without holding down the hard wired pad button in the garage. My remotes don't work in the down mode or control the lights, hoping installing the sensors will fix that, if not I will need to reprogram the remotes which are pre-programed from factory.

about to change mine tomorrow morning and I'm wondering if I can do it with the original cables instead of using the new wires - they're in the wall and ceiling so I really don't feel like taping/tying and pulling through or trying to drop it down from the attic

so the BLD directions completely tell you the WRONG wiring FUCK ME I spent hours trying to figure out why the light wouldn't come on the push button and then when I looked at the actual documents it showed to put the wires in 3 and 4 not 1 and 2 like the BLD app told me. GODDAMN IT
Still can't get the fucking sensors to pick up - even when I wire directly to the unit on a short wire only one light comes on so I have no fucking clue why it's so hard to get the wires to connect in the terminal

Well, this garage door comes with all the bell and whistles of a modern day device (wifi, app, Alexa, 3D installation app). It is as easy as it gets when it comes to installing a garage door opener if you're a handy man but I would hire a professional if you're not a handy man. The problem with this Genie is that the manual and even installation app lack the details and did not emphasis important points before installation. A nice big yellow bold note "BEFORE YOU INSTALL" Points would be nice.
    Here comes the con:
    1. You must install EVERYTHING including the ground sensor for the opener to work or it WILL NOT work. I tried to test the unit before mounting on the ceiling and it would not work.
    2. You MUST program the close and open distance before using the wall mount controller. After the programing, do a complete open and close run for the motor to test the tension of your garage door.
    3. The Plastic UP/DOWN/PROGRAM button are horrible and cheap. My PROGRAM button would not click due to the a defect plastic button. I had to remove the shell where the real buttons are and program from there. It's easier to do it with the shell off.
It took me and another person 2 days (6 hours day) to install this due to the lack of details in the manual and the lack of important emphasis points in the manual.
