    I’m replacing a 13 year old Genie screw drive with the Genie model 70550 belt drive tomorrow. Going over the parts & instructions tonight I noticed the split 2-piece light covers were not even what the manual/instructions showed (they showed one piece covers) so I started trying to figure out why they did this new split cover design. I can see that the split cover design allows you to change the light bulbs by just pressing the large center tab on the lower half of the cover and it opens up giving access to the bulbs💡 without any tools. The 1-piece design always required getting out a screwdriver and taking out two screws per bulb cover in order to replace burned out bulbs. I always thought that was a pain - I can’t tell you how many times a screw fell into the garage and vanished when changing bulbs over the years. It appears this new design is to allow changing bulbs without needing any tools or losing the cover screws. I like it.

      Hello. You make a great point. The newer covers make it easy to change bulbs. Yet for me they are an eyesore. I simply prefer the solid piece design.

    I literally just finished replacing an old 2012 chamberlain with a new Genie a couple hours ago BEFORE your video popped up. I was scared when I started watching it thinking with my luck I had just installed one of the “mistake” models. I did look at chamberlain originally with the built in camera. I wanted 2 lights for sure. But then I read you have to pay for a subscription for some of the camera features. So I ditched the chamberlain and went with a ring plugin camera for my garage since I already pay for their camera service and the subscription covers all cameras I have installed at the same price. Interestingly enough with the Genie’s, I originally bought 2 different Genie belt drive openers from Home Depot a few weeks back and returned them both. First one was 7155D-TSV, but right after I ordered it I realized it didn’t come with keypad which I swore I saw originally that it did. But my order was apparently processed and ready to ship within an hour so I couldn’t just cancel. I then ordered a “mistake” model 7155L-TKSV with keypad but didn’t catch that it came with integrated warm white LED bulbs. I prefer daylight bulbs in everything in my house, so didn’t want the integrated warm white lights. Again, couldn’t cancel. Their lineup can be very confusing. I finally settled on a 7155-TKV from Amazon which came with the smaller keychain type remotes that I decided I liked better as well as the keypad, no integrated bulbs, and backup battery which I wanted. I’ve never installed a garage door opener before, so maybe I did something wrong, but when setting the down travel limit, the door wouldn’t shut tightly without me being able to physically pull it up about an inch unless I set the down limit to close the door strong enough that it bows the rail up slightly when fully closed. I played with it for a good 15 minutes on the down limit setting trying to find a happy medium, but it was either the door could be pulled up by hand 1/2 to 1 inch (with daylight coming in at the bottom or if it sealed tight and couldn’t be pulled up any, it bowed the rail slightly. The rail seems very flimsy metal to me compared to the old 2012 chamberlain I removed. Any advice? Anyway, thanks for the informative video though I would’ve been too late by just a couple hours had I gotten one of the “mistake” models.

    Hello Santigo,
    Thank you for the informative heads up on the Signature Series Genie unit ... the light covers do seem silly in two pieces ... is the motor good? Any other issues? I have had a Genie Pro for 20 years and it is finally having issues ... what do you recommend? I was attracted to the new side mount unit that goes on the side of the door but it appears the Genie unit has a problem with a plastic gear inside the motor breaking. Unfortunately I have to use Genie vs Chamberline because I have a driveway gate with the brain also Genie and I need multiple button controls and be compatible to program both on one control. Any recommendations for me? Thank you, Enrique, San Diego, CA

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Enrique. Great question. The other issue with the Genie Signature Series is their flat programming buttons. These buttons are harder set and in my experience the programming needs to be done twice sometimes thrice.
      The issue with the Genie wall mount motors has been addressed and they changed the gear to a sturdier material. None of my customers are reporting issues with that motor. Which I think is a positive sign.
      If you prefer to go with an overhead motor, I would consider the 7155 from Lowe's or Costco.

    An almost timely video. I just installed a Genie model 7055-TKVE Garage door opener last week. I purchased it at Lowe's.
    Previously I had a Chamberlain 3/4 hp chain driven model that lasted for over 14 years. I had wanted an exact replacement; but nine were available. I wound up buying a Genie 1-1/4 hp belt driven model . . . I'm beginning to think that was a mistake due to numerous issue's.
    Let me say that Genie's factory help service has been SUPERB; but there have been NUMEROUS PROBLEMS with installing and programming the unit.
    Oddly the 1-1/4 hp Genie motor turned out to be HALF the size of the Chamberlain 3/4 hp motor 🤔 The G

    • @davidstone8611
      @davidstone8611 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Genie factory service person told me that their hp ratings aren't done in the "standard way"; it supposedly has to do with the speed of the door opening and closing. However after installation, the Genie 1-2/4 hp motor does seem to operate any noticeably faster than the Chamberlain 3/4 hp motor.
      Then the safety beam units are molded onto a fixed length brackets. Turned out that the bracket were about 1/2" TOO SHORT . . . The bottom horizonal 2"x4" bottomstructural support😮 blocked the beams; and the door wouldn't come down all the way; it keep reversing and going back up. I finally had to remove the brackets
      The"closelimits" (programmin) wouldn't work properly. Must have programmedvit a dozen times before it finally worked.
      The rectangular rails flex a fair amount and are not as heavy duty as the Chamberlain square rail.
      Then, programming the wireless remote was really a "pain" . . . That took about about 12 attempts . . . and it NEVER seemed to work quite properly the way that the service instructions called for . . . But Somehow it finally worked without going through all of the steps.
      The remote controls "worked out of the box" and there was NO WAY to ensure the "securiy" of the remotes . . . .how closely guarded would the remotes and the operator codes can be compatible of secure.(Might someone drive down the street with a remote unit and try to see which garage doors will operate with a factory default setting . . . . Where is the security bond this?
      Then,with the garage door closed, I have noticed that the LED lights will flicker VERY FAINTLY at about once per second . . . don't know what is causing that.
      The Genie factory service have been most helpful or tried to be; but the problems appear to be in the drive unit or with the programing. I haven't tried to program my Toyota push button garage door opener yet.

    Really liking the video so far. 5:02, wouldn't that be 'pressing up'? ;) Was hoping to see something about changing the circuit board. I think my buddy used the wrong bulbs in his opener, and it may have fried the electronics? Saw another video about the lights not turning off. A guy used those curly-cue bulbs in it, and the worked for a month or so, then stayed on all the time. He replaced the circuit board, and put in actual "Genie LED" specific bulbs (probably just normal LED bulbs with a higher price tag coming in a Genie box) but said it's all working now. This is exactly what my friend did, so I want to replace his circuit board, and get the normal LED bulb, NOT those curly-cue I think they's almost like mini fluorescent bulbs.

      Hello. Yeah ... that's what these new DC motors sound like. Of course, you can apply some lithium grease lightly on the belt to help with that. You can also loosen the belt a bit to release some tension. Additionally you might need to have the balance of the garage door check and adjusted to alleviate the strain from the door to the motor. Hope this helps.

I don't see any issues with it, cracks on vanes, etc. I'm assuming one of LEDs went out. The part looks to me incredibly cheap. What are your thoughts there? • @sosgds
      @sosgds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Stephen. That's a great question. I've installed a number of these motors which includes the variants of the pro line and the Optiloctor sensor has not been a major issue. The built in LEDs to the 7155L are new to this design and are roughly about a year old. Thus this might be the time where will see some failures manifest. To my knowledge, the LEDs have not been an issue. Thus I want to say that your circumstances might be singular, that is it could be just happening to your motor. Therefore I want to encourage you to look at getting Genie to warranty the motor for you. In some cases they will send out a new motor head. So it's worth a shot reaching out to them. Hope this helps.

    I figured out how to attach the two piece lens together permanently and it literally snaps in place without the screws. Its called a plastic welder that melts little wavy wires into the plastic; its designed to repair broken plastic but worked great for this application and its only about $20 from Amazon. I have no idea why they designed them in two pieces that don't fit together well when installed as designed. BTW the manual leaves out step two of syncing the remote to Homelink; the short version is the motor program button doubles as the learn button, which after syncing the remote to your vehicle, must be pressed and then within 30 seconds press Homelink button in your vehicle again to o sync to motors rolling code encryption. Both steps should be spelled out in your vehicle's manual if it uses the Homelink system.

      @@Liftmaster2500 Lift-Master has had issues as all companies do. But, to say that Genie has 0 issues is hardly factual. I've been in the Door business with a family business since 1971 when I was a child. Back then, Genie made some great equipment. It started to slide in the 90's but, became a terrible product for reliability in the 2000's. Maybe they have improved some, but I no longer sell the product. I've had my issues with Lift-Master, but will sell those over Genie any day. More of my suppliers carry Lift-Master over Genie or stopped selling Genie all together. Most guys I know in the business rather deal with Lift-Master over Genie and that's what matters when it comes to service after the sale. I've had several customers call me looking for people to service Genie products with despair as they can't find people to work on them. I continue to work on Genie's older equipment, but won't touch the new stuff.

      @@darynm i have the Genie 3120 belt drive. Was installed a little over a year ago. Fully functional but I cant figure out why there is a nasty clicking in motor housing. You can hear it from the neighbors house. Guess a stripped gear. I don't understand how this is happening on a new door. Of course out of warranty period.

      @@user-ou6fx2cy8h Yeah, it could be a bad drive coupler or carriage. I'm not as versed on these newer lines of Genie openers as my company no longer buys or services there models of late anymore. Try calling the Genie company directly for technical support. Now that's it's out of warranty, parts and labor could easily costs more than the unit is worth. Good luck!

    What killed me is that they are still using SAE fasteners... WTF? Oh yeah, and everything else you mentioned, I had troubles with including calling their help line and the "tech" told me to take the motor cover off because when I pressed on the "-" and the other buttons, nothing happened. "Resetting" the cover, made things only a bit better. A VERY FLIMSY DESIGN... RUBBISH.

      Thanks for sharing your feedback!
      The two main reasons why I do not recommend this garage door opener is because of the programming buttons and the light cover. The programming buttons are flat and at times are difficult to utilize when trying to program the travel limits and the remote transmitters.
      As for the light covers they're just garbage and a very poor design. Of course in my videos I try not to tell people what to do I simply provide the information so that they can make a better buying decision.

      I did not contact them. I just took the battery off. I believe it was about a year. I am also in a very hot humid area. I assume that's what caused it. At first, we did not know what was causing the paint to basically gum up and peel off. While the car was in the paint shop I walked under the unit and it dripped on me.
