It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries The Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the Master of Mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die.
Yet even in his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the Warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in his name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever vigilant Inquisition and the tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants - and worse.
To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

@@ManCave101Podcastfun fact the Space Marines of Warhammer 40k are trained as children 9 to 12 years old taken from their families and put through indoctrination, brutal horrifying trails and training to become a Space Marine and those who fail die in process or lobotomized and converted into a cybernetic slaves called a Servitor.
Those who do succeed in becoming a Space Marine. Their whole purpose in life is to fight and kill the enemies of Humanity and die for their Emperor.

Fun fact: In warhammer 40k, human factions have a wide variety of medieval styled melee weapons that are completely upgraded for the sci-fi nature of the universe. In the case of the "plasma sword," you just witnessed what is referred to as a "power sword." Power weapons have built in power field generators that envelop the blade, axe head, or hammer head in a field of energy that, in the case of bladed weapons, allows the weapon to cut through armor and flesh like a hot knife through butter. When it comes to space marines, this is especially useful since their power armor is all but impregnable to all but the heaviest small arms fire, and even then you still haven't killed them just by simply piercing it. When it comes to blunt weapons such as power mauls or thunder hammers, the power field activates only when impacting an object, increasing the power of the blow and making the damage all the more devastating. My point on blunt power weapons might be inaccurate, but it's a good starting point.

    warhammer 40k lore is rich

Slight understatement lmao. 40k lore is like an ever-expanding void that sucks you in. It is the kind of thing that has you looking up and going "huh it's tomorrow.".

Yeah Gears, Halo, and Helldivers have a lot of elements shared by 40k which was made in 84 I believe. Not saying 40k invented these elements but like the drop pods for ODST in Halo and Helldivers is something Space Marines had long before those games where a thing. Feel like Starship Troppers did it first but might be misremembering (the book not the movie). Still, it's a pretty old franchise that honestly didn't get enough love.
5:45 yep left to right, combat knife, chainsword, and thunderhammer which ironically that last one is an anti-tank weapon because there is no kill like overkill.
Honestly though the lore is something I love but it's overly deep at times. Like 1:30 the studs in his head, those are service studs awarded for 100 years of service so he's been active for at least 400 years. That's a pretty minor detail in the grain scheme of things but that kind of illustrates how deep the lore can get.

See we didn't realize how far back this goes. It's good to read that this goes back a while and other games have taken ideas from them. I want to see if I can get Beta access and dive into this world...seems like it might become addicting.

They did my a Stategy game called Dawn of War. Came out a couple years before the first gears. Not many people hear about these games because they are very protective who uses their product.

Eh, I don't think I would say that. Gw is greedy and they are very protective over lore representation but they have no problem shelling the IP out to some 3rd rate dev. That's why there is so many 40k games out there.
