The fact that Mr. Freeze made a cure for his wife's illness only to find out that her condition advanced to the point that it was useless is sad enough. The idea that he constantly carries it around with him to remind himself of his failure and use it as motivation to do ANYTHING to avoid being too late for her again is heartbreaking.

It's scenes like this that make me believe this movie could have worked. The problem is that "Heart of Ice" and "Pretty Poison" (episodes of the animated series) which they were clearly drawing from, do not work with the tone and style of Batman 1966, which they were also drawing from. A more dark and serious version of this movie could have been amazing.
@pittland44 yeah what you said. It's a good story line that is in the wrong movie. The goal of the film was to just be corny and make money. It wasn't meant to be deep even though Mr Freeze's storyline of trying to save his wife is deep

“I’ll have your wife moved to the lab at Arkham, you’ll able to continue your research there.” It’s the way Clooney delivers that line, the way Arnold reacts to it, along with the score to compliment it. One of the best Batman moments ever.
I like how this ended for Victor. He was not only able to continue his research to cure Nora, but also saved a life as a doctor. Of course Ivy would have to worry about him, but to be fair, she did try killing Nora
The scene with Bruce and Victor is poetic and touching and arguably the best part of the film. I love the little subtle nod at the end from Victor to Bruce to show the two men have buried the hatchet. The score is beautiful as well.

Just heard the news; RIP Joel Scuhmacher. B&R might have been a mess but it's a lovely mess at that. This scene in particular was it's main success and still one of the definitive moments in a Batman film period. He saves Mr Freeze which was a change of pace from the previous movies; but he does it save Alfred and Victor at the same time. By saving Alfred he gives Victor a reason to do good again along with the info Nora's still alive. He litterally turns Mr Freeze face. It made an impact on me as a little kid at the movies when I first watched it; made me want to strive for goodness in life and never give up on others. It's been mostly solid; there's some people that won't change for the better but if Mr Freeze could we all could. Joel directed the hell out of this scene, Arnold acted his butt off, and Elliot G scored it great. Plus it's one of the few times George felt like the Bat. Perfection in such a mess. Rest Easy Joel.
It's not a good movie by any means, but this scene shows the kind of potential it had if Warner Bros. allowed Schumacher to make a more serious movie. They also fast-tracked the movie, rushing production in more ways than one. It also shows that Schwarzenegger could have been a great Mr. Freeze if he played the role closer to The Terminator. Joel Schumacher also wanted Batman Forever to be a much more serious movie than it ended up being, digging deeper into Bruce's psyche and even showing elements of a horror movie at times. There's talk that there might even be a much darker Schumacher cut out there. I'd watch it if it ever released.
@Daniel Appleton It was! That is what many people who criticize the movie do not understand about it. Unlike the others, it was made to be similar to the TV series, but it did have more serious moments. I think some of the critics really did not like the Adam West Batman portrayal or series and used this movie to bash it. So wrong and unfair.
It had potential to be better than the animated movie. Had focused on Fries Family drama on contrast with Alfred’s preparation to death (and remove completely that Bane, although link the venom with Pam Isley research was a good catch, but also terribly executed. Bane should have been a terrorist leader who invaded the lab, stole the venom for himself and caused the explosion creating poison ivy... But that could be a whole new movie)

dboymax1 God I hate people like you who don’t know the facts. Schumacher didn’t want to make a live action cartoon. WB forced him to make a campy light hearted films after Batman Returns was too dark. Schumacher initially wanted to go off of Burtons dark vision and make a gritty Batman Year One Film. It’s WB’s fault, not Joel’s
indeed, it's more likely that JS Pretty much wanted to follow up Burton's legacy or at least keep with the DarkerVision of the Caped Crusader, and i hink it can partly be shown by the scenography here and there, expecially in Forever, but again WB interfered too much. Those were the same years that Alien 3 had the same issues, with the producers getting too in the way of director and making a huge mess, i guess the lesson wasn't learned back then, but the Batman Forever and Batman & Robin actually managed to do that by how they were received by audience.
I actually quite like George Clooney's batman voice, if only he made a distinction between bruce and batman. It would have helped to be in a focused movie as well.
One other thing I love about this last scene is Freeze getting payback on Ivy for what she tried to do. You can take it as he didn’t learn anything from Batman’s speech to him, or you can take it as a form of Cruel Mercy. Freeze won’t kill Ivy, but he will do what he said and make her life a living hell.
How did he not learn anything from Batman's speech on this? Batsy told him not to take a life and it's better to save it. Freeze didn't kill Ivy, but definitely seemed like he made sure to make her life a cold ass hell.

@@dancastro4732 She should be happy that she has a chance to be redeemed as a "test subject" for new groundbreaking cures that can save Dr. Fries' wife. The new cold weather might be...harsh.
Honestly, the decision to cast Arnold as Mr. Freeze was brilliant. The man was known for recently playing The Terminator, an unstoppable killing machine with no emotion, no regard for human life, and a heart as cold as ice. It's a shame that he was directed to portray the character as a total goofball.
"recently?" Terminator II had been out for nearly five years at this point, and already had softened the T101 up for audiences as a (relative) good guy
It's all Frieze ever wanted to do. When he thought Nora was dead and Batman was the one that killed her, gloves came off. Aside for the Joker and Ra's, he could be the most murderous member of Batman's Rogue's Gallery.
No he was just a doctor who was altered in an experiment throughout the movie you can see how much he truly loved his wife and wanted to be with her again
George Clooney had the look, stoic attitude, and voice to be the best Batman ever. Plus, under the attitude, Batman is a compassionate softie who even saves the lives of villains. If it weren’t for the cheesy dialogue and campiness, Clooney would have been considered the greatest Batman of all time.
Val Kilmer didn’t convinced me as Bruce Wayne. Bruce’s trauma is deep and makes him look cold and insensitive, but he’s deeply emphatic, even with his enemies. Clooney did great on that account. Save Nora and give Victor the means to research the cure was the perfect demonstration to that.
I used to think that when Batman said "save the life of the man your wife once loved" was actually Alfred, but now I finally see that Batman was referring to Freeze himself, offering him the chance to redeem himself towards his wife whenever she is finally cured and maybe where he can reverse his mutation from all those cryo-chemicals he suffered.
I used to think the same way. I always thought Alfred knew Nora was and was friends with both. It would be nice connection with way Alfred was also suffering the same sickness.
On the other hand, the rest of this movie being as good as this scene may have prevented other superhero movies from getting made. The backlash this movie got was largely responsible for the superhero genre being revitalized and comic book movies being taken more seriously a few years later.
Mr. Freeze has one of the saddest stories ever. He just wanted to save his wife’s life. 1:12 , 1:32 , 1:57 and 2:25 to 2:43 I’m just glad Freeze gets redemption in this movie. That is one of the few good things about this movie.

@@saithfeed511 After rewatching Batman Forever clips after writing my last comment I will admit Val wasn't all shit. But due to horrible writing it did seem that way. Imo Keaten was overrated just had good writing. Clooney had the most potential, he had the look closest to Batman TAS Bruce.
I’m honestly convinced that if given the proper script, screenplay and directing, Arnold would absolutely nail a dark, grounded, Intelligent and most of all convicted portrayal of Freeze who’s both determined to do whatever it takes to find a way to save Nora but despite being warped so far off of that path by every person that’s wronged him, is still only doing the same thing he pledged to do when becoming a doctor
That’s honestly what pisses me off about this movie. This scene plus one or two others of Mr. Freeze where he’s alone would’ve worked perfect. It’s like, dang Arnie here can pull off a real emotions.
The sad thing is that if you take 3-4 scenes from this movie in isolation you can see the skeleton of a far better film. They needed to tone down the silliness (it's way too much like Batman 1966 to work with the story beats of "Heart of Ice") and tone down the neon in this movie (there's just too much and it's offputting) and I think we would still fondly remember this movie. It's a shame too, because I honestly like the casting (I think Clooney is a bit of a weak link but he's got his moments too) and going a little more serious with the villains especially (and both Arnie and Uma Thurman are solid actors, like imagine an Ivy who's a bit more serious and deadly, like a plant based Beatrix Kiddo) and the whole thing could have worked.
3:26 As bad and horrible as this movie is, I can't help but love that part, Arnold gives a very goosebumps feeling with a intimidating performance, driven to subject Ivy to a cold vengeance, and the look of terror and horror on her face at the end just complete seals the scene perfectly.
+tj crusher18 To cause suffering on others isn't justifiable. He's not the only one who has a wife, a loved one. Batman lost his parents. Does he go and make every child an orphan?
Agent1W well ya true but his wide us in a fate kinda worse then death and he acctulay wanted to die before he heard it was ivy when batman shows the video
He also needs to have people stop loffing at him. He would say "Stop dat! Stop it I do not like this it's beautiful it's what the movies are supposed to look like." You should see him on The Streets Of San Francisco season 5 episode Dead Lift. He was fantastic in it as a short tempered body builder who is sensitive to criticism especially from women when he gets laughed at. It is scary seeing him lose his temper yes but kind of funny at the same time
That part where Dr Freeze opens the compartment on his gauntlet is rather reminiscent of the Predator setting the timer to its armour’s self destruct mechanism.
For all the absolute wackiness of this film...the ending is actually pretty well executed. Arnold actually plays a very sympathetic and compelling Mr. Freeze here. The line "Vengeance isn't power. Anyone can take a life, but to give life...that's true power." is a powerful line. Freeze helping Batman cure Alfred is beautiful. If the whole movie had been written like this, it would have been a great film.
This was a great ending where a Batman villain turned from bad guy to good guy with the help of the Dark Knight who not only saved Mr. Freeze's wife but helps reach the man beneath all that ice cold skin and I'll even bet Bruce offers to help Dr. Freeze find a cure for his condition.
'He used my one weakness against me... Heat? ...Love.' Real talk though, if Keaton stuck along this far, would his Batman have been as merciful as Clooney's?
He loves me, he loves me not. He loves me, he loves me not. He loves ... Not!!! Surprise, I'm your new cellmate. And Iv'e come to make your life a living hell! Prepare for a bitter harvest. Winter has come at last.
I love the acting at 1:26 when Batman is still talking Mr.freeze is still reflecting on his wife is still alive. Great acting for the character. Thinking on your reason for going is gone but to give back by the man you thought took it.
1:26 This is why Mr. Freeze is my favourite Batman villian. He would do anything to cure Nora, that's true love right there. Victor Fries didn't choose this path, he just wanted to save his wife. Even if he spends the rest of his life in Arkham Asylum he knows that he can finally save the woman he loves and give her a second chance
It's just a shame the movie built around that scene was just God-awful. I don't know what's worse: a movie not reaching it's potential, or a movie showing it's potential, but doesn't use it.
While the movie wasn't too great, it had it's moments. I'm glad Alfred was cured. It would have been a bummer for him to die since he was in all the early Batman movies.
This moment was extremely intense in all the good ways, mr.freeze should really be on more batman movies, the moments of his arc truly define the villain that rest between the lines of graceful redemption, and soul breaking vengeance
3:11 They must have filmed this scene before the costume department made the arctic suits. Robin's wearing his red-bird suit again, Batgirl has no suit, and a BTS image shows that Clooney wore the sonar suit from Batman Forever in this shot.
It's also probably one of the few specimens he has, if not the only one. So he carries it with him to protect it at all costs. He could probably make more but he doesn't have the resources
@@smokingcrab2290 My guess is that if his lab was compromised, he has the vials and data in his suit to start over. But in this case he knows he's get access to his research so he can give up the vials.
This was never a very good movie. But it did have its moments. Here when Batman is showing Mr. Freeze proof and explaining the situation about his wife as well as asking for his help as the doctor he used to be, I honestly find this to be rather touching and well shot. It really looks to me like a scene of Batman attempting to help Mr. Freeze revert and rehabilitate him.
Freeze is totally an Anti Hero, doing all he does just to find the cure for Nora. I wish even on DC Universe Online game they had the option to be an Anti Hero not just a Hero or Villain.
This is a great scene. It's unfortunate that the rest of the movie couldn't have been just as good. If it weren't for the studio and the toy companies, this film could've been just as good as Batman Forever (Which I love BTW)
"Batman and Robin" was a poorly made film. However, the fact that it worked to follow the toy line was nice. Also, it had good moments such as this one.
@@Shubbhaaam well said! You guys also remember the scene where Batman jumps out the Frozen batmobile, flies straight through the Ice mobile, with the Batman theme in the background, then it cuts freeze defeated. That's another great scene from this movie
If Matt Reeve's Batman film is brilliant we need to see a great version of Mr Freeze. I am really hoping we get to see the version of Freeze we deserve.
I have to say, this scene at the end was incredibly emotional, the music, dialogue and facial expressions from Arnold actually made my eyes water a bit.
This film has a handful of moments which are pretty good. All the scenes with Bruce and Alfred are heartfelt, a couple of scenes between Bruce and Dick, and this scene. These are sequences where the actors and the writers seemed to have given a damn. It also gave the film a tonal whiplash with everything else being so ridiculous and goofy. I actually think Clooney as Bruce was pretty much perfect, it’s just that he didn’t even try to be Batman.
If they kept the writing and acting similar to this scene throughout the whole project, this would’ve been a pretty good Batman movie. “Maybe you can save the life of the man your wife once loved. He’s still inside you, Victor. Buried ... deep beneath the snow. Will you help me....... Doctor?” That’s almost the same level writing as the animated series.
All of these years later I realzed how much weight this scene held. It highlighted Batman and Mr. Freeze's rivalry in the comics as well as the Batman: Sub-Zero movie. This movie actually had a lot of substance, it just kept getting lost in the campiness. Still, forever a childhood favorite💯
One of the few things this movie got right was the fact that Batman believes there's good in everyone, he will always try to help the villains he fights to redeem themselves
Great, now I cannot stop imagining the Night King played by Arnold Schwarzenegger delivering other ice puns and Mr. Freeze one-liners. *Night’s Watchman encounters White Walkers in the first episode’s opening and sees their leader* "Allow me to break the ice. Learn it well, for it's the chilling sound of doom!" *Overlooks Hardhome on his undead horse* “Tonight’s forecast: A freeze is coming!” *Jon Snow kills White Walker* “FROSTY!” *Night King eyes Jon Snow and resurrects the newly made corpses* “In this universe, there is only one absolute: everything freezes! The Ice Age!” *Throws ice javelin at Daenarys’ dragons* *Wall tumbles down* “Always winterize your columns!” *If Night King manages to successfully kill everyone in Season 8 and celebrate his taking of the Iron Throne* “Cool Party!!!” *The Night King and everyone else is gathered in a neon-lit Iron Throne room* “C'MON, SING! SING! LOUDER, C'MON! SING! SING!” *taps foot wearing Direwolf slippers, made from Ghost and Nymeria, as undead Jon sings “I’m Mr. White Christmas I’m Mr. Snow” with a choir of the Night King’s White Walkers and Wight minions backing him up*
I liked this scene in Batman and robin possibly the best scene, though he is evil in causing harm to innocent people, this shows Dr Fries is a tragic figure a sort of anti-hero, trying to do good for his wife and to stop the disease afflicting his wife.
I see Mr. Freeze as a cracked hero, much like Two Face. There's an element of him that was heroic, but he was pushed past his breaking point and isn't able to cope with what's happened to him.

But I like the camp. It's Arnie"s defining feature. I love watching him just to see what one-liners he spews out.
If only mr. Freeze was there to see that his wife was fully cured thanks to a very generous and open-hearted doctor from Wayne Enterprises I think mr. Freeze would have shaken that man's hand and would have been forever happy to be back in Nora's arms and I know for a fact that even though they will never see each other again in this life they will forever be together in the next life
He also was great when Victor confronted Pam at Arkham for her trying to kill Nora, and how creepy he was with the cold tone and how his delivery was.
London Productions.....my sentiments EXACTLY!!!!! Bring back Mr. Freeze and do him better! Same with Bane.....i like Tom Hardy but that was not the Bane from the comics or the cartoon in the 90's

Absolutely. The way batman was actually able to connect with Victor was remarkable and beautiful.

Rest Easy Joel.
rest in peace joel scuhmacher!

Yeah, especially when arny went "ahruuughhhh" lol
This scene rlly shows how good Batman truly is and how he only cares for the good and wants to see the good in people I like it
I wish we get more of that side of Batman.

You just can´t ignore how absolutely beautiful Elliot Goldenthal´s music for both Schumacher films is, but especially in this scene.

It had potential to be better than the animated movie. Had focused on Fries Family drama on contrast with Alfred’s preparation to death (and remove completely that Bane, although link the venom with Pam Isley research was a good catch, but also terribly executed. Joel Schumacher wanted to make a live action cartoon.
dboymax1 God I hate people like you who don’t know the facts.
It didn't matter to my 14-year old mind, though. I thought it was awesome!
Bat credit card, anyone?
Clooney was actually really good in this scene.
Verses the rest of his performance in the film, that is saying a lot.
Clooney wasn’t the problem in the film. It was the tone and writing.
Yeah I didn’t think he was as bad as people make him out to be. He just needed to be in a better Batman movie.

A cold hell at that...
How did he not learn anything from Batman's speech on this? Batsy told him not to take a life and it's better to save it. Freeze didn't kill Ivy, but definitely seemed like he made sure to make her life a cold ass hell.

Your beef should be with Warner Brothers. It was the studio's decisions to make it that way.
Mr Freeze was never a true villain. He just wanted to save his wife.
It's all Frieze ever wanted to do. When he thought Nora was dead and Batman was the one that killed her, gloves came off. Aside for the Joker and Ra's, he could be the most murderous member of Batman's Rogue's Gallery.
Yeah, he was just going about it the wrong way.
The same for Sandman in Spider-Man 3. He just wanted to get some money to save his daughter.

2:15 Just the fact he carries the formula shows his undying love for his wife. He can't save her with those doses, but he can keep trying . . .

The best scene out of the whole movie Mr Freeze finds redemption so does Batman for Alfred. Plus Arnold's acting is actually good
Who is here after the Oscar's? Batman beat Freeze with his one weakness, love.
There are flashes of greatness in this movie idc what anyone says. And the music is 🔥
4:16 Now to make the Arnold do a _Game of Thrones_ cameo speaking that line!
Agent1W maybe have Mr freeze deliver this line to the Knight king as he is about to be destroyed.
Great, now I cannot stop imagining the Night King played by Arnold Schwarzenegger delivering other ice puns and Mr. Freeze one-liners.
*Night’s Watchman encounters White Walkers in the first episode’s opening and sees their leader* "Allow me to break the ice. My name is Freeze. Learn it well, for it's the chilling sound of doom!"
*Overlooks Hardhome on his undead horse* “Tonight’s forecast: A freeze is coming!”
*Jon Snow kills White Walker* “FROSTY!”
*Night King eyes Jon Snow and resurrects the newly made corpses* “In this universe, there is only one absolute: everything freezes! Can you be cold, Jon Snow?”
*Night King attacks Bran Stark in the vision, as he trains to be the Three-Eyed Raven, and marks him* “Stay cool, Bird Boy!”
*Night King confronts the remaining Children of the Forest responsible for his creation* “I’m afraid that my condition has left me COLD to your pleas of mercy!”
“What killed the dragons? The Ice Age!” *Throws ice javelin at Daenarys’ dragons*
*Wall tumbles down* “Always winterize your columns!”
*If Night King manages to successfully kill everyone in Season 8 and celebrate his taking of the Iron Throne* “Cool Party!!!”
*The Night King and everyone else is gathered in a neon-lit Iron Throne room* “C'MON, SING! SING! LOUDER, C'MON! SING! SING!” *taps foot wearing Direwolf slippers, made from Ghost and Nymeria, as undead Jon sings “I’m Mr. White Christmas I’m Mr. Snow” with a choir of the Night King’s White Walkers and Wight minions backing him up*
Mark Cobuzzi you have made my day with that thank you
@@markcobuzzi826 Awesome script writing, but it's too bad that the hardcore "Gotters" wouldn't allow for that sharp of a comedic edge.
"Take 2 of these and call me in the morning" XD
Once again arnie and his one liners
I liked this scene in Batman and robin possibly the best scene, though he is evil in causing harm to innocent people, this shows Dr Fries is a tragic figure a sort of anti-hero, trying to do good for his wife and to stop the disease afflicting his wife.
I see Mr. Freeze as a cracked hero, much like Two Face. There's an element of him that was heroic, but he was pushed past his breaking point and isn't able to cope with what's happened to him.
Just like Sandman trying to save his daughter in Spiderman 3
Weird how Bruce and Dick we’re still in their suits but Barbera was wearing normal clothes when they give Alfred the Medicine.
It’s weirder how it’s their original outfits not those silver ones they were wearing.
@@shadowknight1121 Maybe the silver was like a cold setting built into their suits
@@lockonstratos31 I dunno maybe, I always thought it was weird that they would just randomly change outfits in between battles.
@@lockonstratos31 no they will change to this before the last fight
What's weirder is Batman and Robins suits had nipples and batgirls didn't.
Batman calling Victor "doctor" was just amazing. This movie couldve been so much more...
This is the first time I've seen this scene in years and I see how wholesome this moment between batman and freeze Is so beautiful.
