I am from Antigua and Barbuda in the Caribbean. I have been to Suriname back when I was a rotoractor. Suriname is a beautiful country with friendly people. I especially loved the food and the sweet chilli sauce that they make there and the soap they make there as well. I plan to visit there again someday and stock backup on the chilli sauce

Such a unique combination of peoples converging: Native Amazonians, Africans, Javanese, Hindustanis and Europeans all converging to make Paramaribo and Suriname so incredibly unique. I still haven’t had the chance to go - on my bucket list 😊
Also Chinese and Jews and many people are a mix of all that. Suriname is a place that shows many cultures can live next to eachother in peace. But let us not forget Suriname has huge economic problems now post colonialism and their is a transgenerational trauma due to slavery.
With that money all the guys need money,diesel, gas for the burner,mercury,parts for the crusher and engine and you have to pay the people who bring you diesel and you have to get the gold to the city and they will never give you the best price because they have to make money too.

This documentary touched me greatly. I give general classes for elementary and secondary school. I wish someday I went to one these places and spent a season, giving crash courses on the general disciplines. These people only wish knowledge and an official statement that allows them to earn their keep and help their families. Yan's dream of becoming a ship captain is so beautiful, and so is the wish and resolve of the two sisters.

They look so much like Venezuelans, the features are so recognisable... I am kind of sad Venezuelans don't have so much interaction with the rest of the Guyanas, it is really important to say this because without the language barrier we definitely are very similar. excellent documentary. it conveys in very simple terms what the challenges, opportunities and stakes are in suriname. It's easy to criticize the kid mining for gold with mercury but like he says, if I don't do this, I starve. So what then?

In my country, i would rather live in the village. In the city there is too many laws, too many boundaries, too many restrictions. For example, in a modernized western country you need fishing license to fish. You need permit to build your own home. You need to pay tax. So many things. In my country, if you want to fish all you need to get is you fishing equipment. No restrictions from the state. Pure freedom.

I think they can find gold without using mercury. I’ve done some panning for gold before and didn’t need any.
Panning for gold seems to beg for an autonomous vehicle and AI. I have never done it but it looks like repetitive work that is perfect for a robot.

Where the Christian Missionaries have reached there is nothing indigenous & very little native knowledge remaining. Such people start losing their identity from the time they adopt Christian names.
So agree with you. Christianity has in a way destroyed the diverse native cultures wherever their footprints landed.
The basic assuption is that natives need to be civilized. Lure of charity Christianity brings with it makes the locals more open to the change. Besides English education is perceived as a ticket to the so called big beautiful outside world

excellent documentary. it conveys in very simple terms what the challenges, opportunities and stakes are in suriname. It's all about a fucked up incentive structure that they and all of us in all countries have. It's easy to criticize the kid mining for gold with mercury but like he says, if I don't do this, I starve. So what then?

In my country, i would rather live in the village. In the city there is too many laws, too many boundaries, too many restrictions. For example, in a modernized western country you need fishing license to fish. You need permit to build your own home. You need to pay tax. So many things. In my country, if you want to fish all you need to get is you fishing equipment. No restrictions from the state. Pure freedom.
